The biggest risks MC and V now face is losing the debit portion of their business. 2%++ swipe fees to merchants, which funds reward points and miles to card holders, is an exorbitant charge to process a payment. Merchants are now pushing back with surcharges to pay with a card. Since people are not going to return to paying with cash, alternative systems like Zelle, CashPay, and even the prospect of digital currency will threaten to take away the non-credit (debit) transactions. Time will tell.

Read MC/Visa shareholder reports. This will not be located on there. Also, the interchange/merchant discount rate is not 2% on debit. Its capped at a MUCH lower rate. For credit, yeah its about 2%.

In my country, all banks issue MasterCard and visa card but there is an In App QR payment method backed by National bank's Blockchain system. From what I've heard, it costs stores more to accept MasterCard as compared to Visa, at least here in Europe. And if I think back some decades ago, I do think there were some places that took Visa but not Mastercard (maybe because of this cost reason, or maybe because they were not as well spread out at that time).

    • @sblack53

It’s typically the opposite in Canada, MasterCard has semi-exclusivity deals with Costco and No Frills, and their interchange fees are typically marginally lower than Visa. That said they have the fewest card offerings among the Big 5, with only BMO offering Debit and BMO and RBC offering credit (and RBC also issues Visa cards). The biggest threat to Visa and MasterCard in Canada though is actually Interac.

In India, we have something called UPI. Using a phone number you can do peer to peer transactions and using a QR code, merchant transactions. It can also be linked to your bank account and also the credit line. Essentially rendering any other method of payment methods irrelevant. Around 70% of digital transactions are now done using UPI and fast gaining market share. Visa and Mastercard as expected, went crying to their government crying foul. And keep in mind, 40% of the global real time transactions are executed in India.

There were over 624.86 billion transactions using payment cards for a total of 40.645 trillion dollars spent. Furthermore I did not see a good a reasoning as to why Mastercard is beating VISA. You mention their stock having grown more because of investors believing there is more potential for growth due to its smaller market share but that’s it? VISA is obviously also targeting new markets, just like the mentioned B2B market.
