As a worker at a TjMaxx, I can tell you that our markdowns are usually done in order of what arrives to us in our shipments. So we could have one shirt on clearance and an identical one at regular price because it came to us on a later shipment sold to us by the same vendor. My store only goes by this system and often refuses to manually adjust the price if our system doesn’t automatically mark it down, so approaching a cashier about a price discrepancy may not result in getting the clearance price you see. That decision is up to the discretion of the supervisor on duty though, so it doesn’t hurt to ask

The “pricing errors” also come from the fact that if we get multiple of one item but at different times they’ll basically “time out” and it’ll clearance for being there too long vs it’s “newer” version. I asked about this a lot when I first started at Marshall’s “why is this one on clearance but the same thing over here isn’t?” It’s based on when they come into the store :)

I was explained by the corporation that they bid on their merchandise from pallets that have been put on auction among several stores including Ross, Burlington etc. a lot of their merchandise still have labels from places like Macy’s, Dillards and I’ve seen Nordstrom and Neiman tags too. Some of these stuff were over manufactured for theses stores and ended up in auction. Explained by the corporation in a study I had to do.

I’m not very good at TH-cam but I really wanted to bring this to your attention. I go to the Dollar Tree regularly for some of my household shopping. Not just to save money, but to get a brand I like. I got excited when I saw the Cascade pods that I usually buy at the grocery store. Then I did the math. There were only two pods in the bag for $1.25 each bag or .62 cents per pod. Amazon has the same pods for .31 per pod. I’m so glad I take the time to do the math and research! I really enjoy your program and I especially like the way you dress!

Regarding the bonus tip, Tj Maxx will also usually get the same product sent at different times, especially if it is popular like the Nike shirt. When I worked there, the older product would get marked down first, and you can tell which one is older by the number in the square at the top.

Great video! As a former TJ Maxx manager, I’ll add my two cents:
    • Despite popular belief, the yellow ticket isn’t necessarily the final price. Yellow tickets get marked down two additional times before they’re liquidated. If you’re able to befriend a markdowns associate (they usually work M-F mornings), you might be able to get some insider info about when/if things are getting marked down further.
    • In general, you can get a lot of markdown info if you can befriend a markdown associate or a manager. Technically we’re not supposed to give away when markdowns are, but if we like you, we’ll probably give you the scoop. 😉

Tip of my own - if you find something there that you love, buy it! Chances are when you go back, it won’t be there. Especially with items you need to match such as drapery - I needed 4 panels to cover my living room window so I took everything I needed right away while it was in stock. With their 30-day return policy, you’re better to buy the item and see if you like it or if it suits your decor - if it doesn’t, it’s easy to return in less than a month.
Additionally, don’t be stuck on buying matchy matchy sets! Sheet sets already come with fitted sheet, top sheet and 2 standard pillow cases so select a different color for the shams or duvet cover - no need in having everything monotone. Also, since the store gets daily shipments Monday to Friday, you might go back a few days later and find something that would coordinate perfectly.
The store usually carries the same brands - Pure Living Bamboo, Kate Spade, Perry Ellis, Hilfiger, etc so don’t panic right away if you love a particular brand like this and don’t see it one day - chances are the beans will have more in-store selection in stock again in a few days or a few weeks.
Keep in mind that some stores stock more of one item than a nearby store. The store a town away, stocks lots of the “Skinny Girl” brand coffee flavours and drapery while the store in my town has more pet supplies and luggage. The store on the other side of my town has more children’s clothes and kitchen ware. Supply varies based on shopper’s habits in the store’s immediate trading area and it’s square footage in the retail space.

Especially in the jewelry section. I used to find really nice pieces of sterling silver. Now, they are bringing in a lot of sterling silver PLATED over bronze items, stainless steel(which is sometimes mistaken for sterling silver because of the SS stamp) and a lot of costume jewelry. Their buyers aren't bringing in quality merchandise. The quality of goods has plummeted over the last 20 years due to PETA, mass production by foreigners and the use of plastic, spandex and polyurethane in wearables. The templates for the designs of clothing seems to lean toward Asians. Americans are largerin body build for the most part.

Hello everyone, as an employee of TJ Maxx, I just wanted to point out a few things. It might be a little bit of an exaggeration to say you can haggle on prices. Anything labeled “As Is” is typically labeled like that to let associates know that that is the final price for the item and it has already been markdown for any associated issues. If you find something damaged and not marked down, there is a spreadsheet held behind the counter that dictates what price it can be reduced to. It’s possible depending on the item, damage, and people involved that you might be able to get something like $2 below this if you’re going to buy it and get it out of the store. However, this is really an exception to the rule rather than the rule, so as a cashier I ask for everyone to not expect this as a given when at cash out. In regards to the return policy, you’re absolutely right about the extended return policy at the end of the year. Just to clarify a bit more though, typical return policy is within 30 days with receipt back on method of payment, over 30 days with receipt is store credit with tax, over 90 days with receipt is store credit no tax. As for no receipt but we can identify the item in our system you get store credit, though in CT it’s law that you lose tax on the transaction, but I’m not sure about elsewhere. And just for fun, I want to explain the red tag bonus content at the end. In the case of the white shirt, I can see on the tag that the style number starts with 56 and can’t read the rest. The $5 red tag has a style number of 162697. If the style numbers don’t match, it’s not the right ticket for the clothing item. Also like mentioned a bit in the video, items are marked down based on time spent in the store, with older items having gone potentially through more than one markdown cycle. However, this means that we can get two identical shipments of clothing, but the clothing that was in the store first will be marked down while the new shipment will not be. The key here is that each shipment of that identical piece of clothing will have a different style number on its tag which will identify whether it is or isn’t available for a price match with a discounted version of the clothing in the store. This is stuff that I’d love for all my customers to know, though I can’t obviously expect anyone to when we all shop at a ton of different stores. Other than these few things, I think it was a great video that really highlights how to maximize your savings at TJ Maxx.

I used to work for TJMAXX for about 4 years. I started as a part time cashier, ended as a key holder. I wanted to be a buyer. Depending on the traffic of the store and the sales will determine how often the store gets shipments. Some stores will get shipments everyday, other stores will get shipments a few times a day. If your store seems to always have crap, its probably a dump store. The store opens to employees around 7 (I think 🤔) and there is a mark down schedule that's must be complete within about a week or two. The red tickets are first scans, yellow tickets are last scans. That's where you can find items at their lowest like pennies on the dollar. This is about twice a year I think. Honestly depending on your store, they'll take anything back anytime. As long as you have at least the number sequence at the top of the receipt we can put that in the system to pull the product.

I shop at TJ Maxx and Marshalls regularly. Two things that I have learned: they save merchandise from year to year. Last year I bought a burgundy plaid Nautica shirt, and this past winter, I found the exact same shirt for the exact same price. I asked a local Store clerk and she said yes they do this all the time. I don’t know that they store them, but they definitely get the same products again and again.
The other thing that I have learned is that you can still return something after 30 days but you’ll just get a store credit. That’s fine, I shop here all the time. But sometimes I just cannot get back soon enough because you bet your butt I am not going in there on a Saturday!
Also, sidenote, Nordstrom rack takes their prices up and down. They will literally peel a clearance sticker off some thing and sell it again for a higher price depending on the season.

Thanks for the informative video, although I have stopped at TJMaxx and Marshall's before you were born. My favorite snag from TJMaxx was in Charlotte NC. I found a purple tagged, gorgeous Italian lace blouse with invisible zipper in the back. Someone had stripped the zipper, leaving it impossible to untangle much less try on. The original TJMaxx price was over $200. marked down to $5 on clearance. I have seen similar lace items in Italy and knew that it was going home with me. I bought a new invisible zipper for $14. and took it to a local person to repair. I invested $20. the seamstress charged $5. but I gave her $20. So, $40. for a drop dead gorgeous blouse was an amazing deal.
Never pass up something that needs a repair. Most times you still come out ahead.

I used to work at tj maxx def find out what day your store receives its shipment!!! Now you DO NOT want to go on the day the truck arrives cuz the truck can come at any time during that day, they have to hang up all clothes, add sensors, and they also need time to put it out on the sales floor so I recommend going a day or two after the day the truck comes!!!! If you go the day after ask an employee working the sales floor if the entire truck has been put out on the salesfloor yet or is there stuff in the back to be put out still!!!! So typically home toys and beauty goes out alot faster and before clothes since clothes needs hung and sensored!

I used to work for them, and as far as I know, they do not have “knock offs.” They have a long standing commitment with the brands, so they make deals with them directly and they will make the clothes specifically for the store. That’s why they might have the store in the label. It’s a promise that the store will always buy from them, and that’s how they get good prices directly from the brands.

As a TJ Maxx employee, a lot of those products that are damaged that already have a red clearance tag on them. They have those markdowns because they are damaged. So asking for a lower price on a damaged product won’t lead to a lower price if it has a red tag. Even if it didn’t they would only do a 10% markdown

That last bit about bedding and not finding matching items literally made me laugh remembering what happened to me several years ago. I found a beautiful Ralph Lauren comforter and 1 matching fitted sheet. There are several TJ Maxx stores around our area. Over the next few months I went to other stores and managed to pick up the flat sheet, dust ruffle, pillow cases, and 1 pillow sham. About 3 months after finding everything except the 1 additional sham we took a little road trip. Along the way we saw a TJ Maxx so I stopped, ran in and YES they had the pillow sham I needed. I was so excited. A few days after returning home, I got out all the pieces, ready to transform my bedroom. Just one problem. It had taken so long to accumulate everything (total about 6 months) I really no longer liked or wanted it. I had kept all receipts so I took everything to the closest TJ Maxx and returned it all! The clerk was exceptionally nice and I told her that the next person who really liked this pattern would at least get all pieces at once. We laughed about it, I got my refund, and left. I now make sure I can get everything at once so this doesn't happen again.😊👍

I found a gorgeous royal blue designer winter coat at TjMaxx many years ago at a ridicuously low price. I later found it on the designer’s website. They listed the price around $350.00. From the photo on the website I could see why it ended up at TjMaxx. The buttons on the collar were positioned wrong, so the collar didn’t sit quite as it should. That was a simple and cheap fix by my alterations person. It would have been fine to leave it as is, but it did look better after it was corrected. I was quite proud of myself for that find, and I still have that coat over 13 years later and a move to Europe.

I have worked very upscale stores all my life, the problem is that many times you could get better prices if you waited for the designer final sale than the T. max or Marshall’s.

One of the things I found in TJ Maxx is sometimes you will find two exact items with different prices and the explanation as told to me by the store manager is it often depends when it comes in, as the first item has been there longer they will mark it down to get it sold to make room for newer shipments, even though the same exact item may come in a newer shipment it will have a higher price due to it being nu-stock

Everything comes in with price tags already on the items. The reason there may be 2 different prices on identical items is because all merch doesn't come in at the same time. The longer an item is in the store the chances of a price reduction is likely. Sometimes its not simply the vendor. So keep an eye out for stuff all over the store. Coming from HomeGoods: 1) TJX sequels their stock..meaning that if you see something in July, you will probably see it again next July. 2) the tags at HG have the month/yr listed on the tag, so you know when it came into the store. If you see two items that are the same and onw of them is marked down, you should check the dates on the tag. It likely means that they have had one for three months and one that is newer. 3)Markdowns happen every two to three months. The best time to take advantage of markdowns is early January and Late Summer. 4)The red tags have a 4 digit number followed by a letter. I can't speak to the meaning of the "M" shown in the video as HG and TJMaxx have different rules on some things...but the I stands for Initial. This means that the item has only undergone the first round of markdowns. The S stands for Subsequent. This is the second round of markdowns. Once the item hits subsequent, they most likely won't mark it down any more. 5) Seasonal items will get the initial markdown, then the subsequent markdown, and then get zeroed out and trashed. So if you want the seasonal item, you better grab it. 6) That actually goes for anything...if you see it, you better grab it. It's better to buy it and return it than you think it's going to be there when you come back. 7) If you see an item without a price, find something similar and take both up to the cash register. That way you don't have to wait for a price check.

Hi Brittany…TY for sharing insider info! I’m wondering how to tell what the original date of an item is ? I’ve heard numerous people talk about things being on a 24 month cycle but still don’t understand how do you know when an item originally came to the store when reading the tag? You just take the item, you don't even need a bag or a box, over to Kohl's and they have an Amazon return there. The return literally takes 30 seconds. Plus, you receive a 25% coupon for Kohl's. I personally don't care for Kohl's but for people who shop at Kohl's, that is a hefty discount. Even if I may pay a little more for a particular item, it's worth it for less hassles. • @dallasshumaker6148

The yellow tags are a special clearance cycle done to force out seasonal items to make room for new merchandise in the next season done twice a year. The markdowns on those items continue until they go out the door. Amazing time to buy.
Also, items go on clearance based off of how long they are in store, not the item itself. The exact same item could come in months apart. That’s how one shirt can be priced at full while another is a red ticket clearance item. The number in the square indicates the month the merch arrived (2 year cycle so # goes up to 24). The example in the video might be a missed markdown as they both came in the same month.
Just be understanding with the employees if they can’t price match the exact same item because one came in the store yesterday and the clearance item has been on the rack for over a two months.

We have 2 for each temperature arc (lightweight cotton for hot summer nights, midweight jersey for spring and fall, and heavy flannel for winter) - there would be no way of getting them all to match between the weights. We have one on the bed, switch to the next while we wash the first, and then switch back the next week and wash the second, until its time to put warmer or cooler sheets on then we switch to the next pair and repeat.

Hi Marshall’s cashier here, the bargaining thing ONLY works if the damaged item you found does not have a marked down tag already. Unless you can prove there is a new issue with the product, we can only apply a 10% markdown each time. I’ve had people come up to me and try to bargain more and more and then bring up my coordinator and bargain with them and waste time in line. We can’t give more than 10% off at a time.
Also if you see something with a yellow tag, it means it does not go any lower and we will just throw it away (mark out) if it is returned or given a new reason to mark down.
As for the two same items with different prices, look at the u line code above the price. If they have different codes we can’t match the price.
Loved working at Marshall’s but people definitely got too comfortable yelling at teenagers just trying to do their jobs.

The best deals I've gotten from any of their related families of stores is when there's no price tag on something. They ask you to find anything similar in the store (say a pot by a different brand but of a similar size). Then, you take both to the register, and they suggest a price (always lower) and make a tag for the item. Note: Do not abuse this, but it's a great deal when possible.

In my experience with pricing error; I was informed by management that when an item comes in to store at different times prices will vary. Since items have different SKU numbers and arrived at different times even though same item I was not able to get both items at the lower price.

The Runway in Norwell MA (south of Boston) has a nice selection. Favorites are sweaters, shirts, and bags. There’s also a section for Runway in the jewelry department.

My wife worked at TJMaxx in Jewelry for 15 years. She is now retired. There are some amazing buys on watches, rings, earrings etc if you know your stuff. TJMaxx is the only one of the TJX chain that has Jewelry so they get amazing items.

I agree. I got a Gucci necklace at the downtown Seattle store, for not much money. It is a small silver shamrock with a tiny “G” on one of the clover leafs. Edit: I just came from the store here on Maui and they had two Gucci rings for $150, sadly not in my sizes. One was a cigar band with “Gucci” in fine lettering, and the other was an open heart.

I couldn't believe all the stuff pouring in through the donation window. Of course, employees had to wait until an item was on the floor for a while before we could buy it.

I HAD to come here right away - ( I usually only hit a like button - but really wanted you to know how much I love your style and content - from just this one video!) you showed up in my feed when I typed in a search for TJ Maxx (before I even typed in what I was looking for), and just had to watch this! Halfway through, I looked you up and SUBSCRIBED!! Where have you been in my life all this time?? I so much enjoyed the video, and your warm and sincere delivery!!
I'm now heading to an Aldi video, and saw a Dollar General one that caught my eye 😆!!
