One of the reasons J.J. Jameson works so well in the Raimi films is the presence of his staff, who are fun (even if simple) characters who add a lot to every scene and make the Bugle feel like a living world. Jonah plays off of them, and they act as a nice foil to his pretty horrible attitude. It's nothing that complex (which is fine) but it's still very fun. It's one of the reasons J.J.s presence in No Way Home is just kinda boring and tacky, even if it is a lot more comic accurate when it comes to his attitude. Very much a "Look, it's something you remember!" - which works for like, a single shock gag but then becomes really tedious. There's like one shot where it cuts from J.J. ranting about Spider-Man on camera to him in his studio, but like, nothing happens. He just sits there. He doesn't have anyone to play off of.
Yep that’s exactly how I feel. I don’t like that they didn’t have the balls to do their own version of these characters down to the actors that were cast in the role. It bothers me that they simply stole the casting of another filmmakers version of Spider-Man. It comes off as lazy and invites direct comparisons to a different set of films.
That's pretty much the reason why i love Raimi's Spiderman, the living New York. We were so used to CGI city on these Superhero movies, that honestly, i couldn't care less. Who are these people? I don't fuckin know, they never fleshed them out outside the fact that they were just extras running away from the CGI alien invasions. But Raimi's Spiderman is different. NY in those trilogy felt like a living city. There are interactions and relationship (sort of) with each others, people reacting to Spiderman, to Green Goblin, the Parade where G. Goblin attacks and had turned into chaos, Harry and Oscorp reacting to Doc Ock failed demonstrations, MJ talks with other play actresses, Peter gets a pizza delivery job and gets fired, Bully Maguire dancing on the street and creeped out girls, News Anchor reacting to Spiderman's 'defeats' during early climax of Spiderman 3, Newspaper reacting to Spiderman 'quitting' in Spiderman 2 and his return later on. Hell, on Spiderman 1st and 2nd, people of NY helped Spidey in some way (like the bridge scene and Peter gets unmasked on the train scene). Tho, tbh. J. J. Jameson plays a different role here. Instead of an established News outlet, it's supposedly felt like one of those conspiracy TH-cam channels. Which is why we met him talking in front of a greenscreen at the start, and then he has his own news channel Studio later on (maybe from all those Ad Sense from the views of Tom's Spiderman's unmasked lmao)
For those of you who didn't know, Ted Raimi was also in Invader Zim. He was the voice role of Invader Skoodge, conqueror of Planet Blorch, but was looked down upon by the Almighty Tallest for his short stature... not too unlike how J Jonah Jameson looks down upon Hoffman here.
