You miss empek empek from palembang city, soto betawi from jakarta, coto makasar from south Sulawesi, gudeg from Yogyakarta, and bubur manado from north Sulawesi 😂😂 But i appreciate your choose!
Hahha awesome list bro! Indonesian food is my favorite cuisine currently - so many mind blowing flavors and flavor combos! ENAK BANGET (Very delicious)!!!! Beef rendang is definitely at the top of my list. Get some sambal terasi (chili sauce with shrimp paste) to go with it and it's game over! To everyone seeing this comment - Indonesian food is really delicious and underrated. Please try it - you won't be disappointed!
Never been to Indonesia but back then at my culinary school in college, we had Asian cuisine so we did Malaysian, Indonesian, Chinese, etc. we mad Beef Rendang from scratch and I just fell in love with the flavor. Just mind blowing. It’s been a while and I’m gonna make some!!
Please try coto makassar, palumara, sop konro, manado style of ikan bakar, ayam woku… arrghhhh I luv so many Indonesian food… each island have their own characteristic. Java prefer sweet flavor and the middle Indonesia area like savoury flavor
- Soto - Gule - Rujak Cingur - Ketoprak - Nasi Pecel - Ayam Bakar - Sego Tumpang - Gurame Bakar - Iga bakar And many many many more Indonesian food.....
I am an Indonesian. All of the foods you mentions is really tasty. But here's another Indonesian food list you must try: 1. Ayam bakar taliwang --> roast chicken with lot of spices, it's really good. It's originally from taliwang (part of nusa Tenggara barat island, Indonesia) 2. Batagor --> it's like fried and crispy version of siomay, it's a snack with peanut sauces (I think it's from Java) 3. Soto ayam boyolali --> it's like chicken soup with rice and chicken broth.. There's lot of versions of this soto but soto boyolali is my favorite.. (It's from boyolali, central Java Indonesia) 4. Soto betawi --> it's like thicker version of original soto because it's using coconut cream and using beef meat instead of chicken. It's really tasty (from betawi tribes, jakarta) 5. Bebek goreng -->its like ayam goreng but using ducks instead of chickens. My favorite is Bebek goreng Slamet and Bebek goreng sinjay, pretty famous here. 6. Mendoan --> fried tempeh, it's really good for a snack. 7. Bakso--> Indonesian meatball soup, pretty famous here. And lot of famous brand of bakso here that you can try. 8. Garang asem --> it's my favorite chicken dish. It's originally from grobogan, central Java. You can see the pic on google. It's really tasty and healthy too. 9. Klepon --> my favorite Indonesian snacks, it's sweet, and have a melted brown sugar of you eat it. 10.Lontong kupang --> must try if you visit East Java, kupang is a Indonesian small fish. Originally from sidoarjo and surabaya city I think. 11. Mie Ayam 12. Rujak Cingur 13. Brem (snack) 14. Gudeg 15. Lontong sayur 16. Rujak buah (snack) 17. Sop buntut 18. Fuyung Hai 19. Ayam bumbu rujak 20.Ayam betutu 21. Rawon 22. Roti bakar bandung (snack) 23. Lapis legit From number 11 to 23, I'm getting tired to type it hahaha..(I'm on my mobile phones), there's lot of other delicious Indonesian food, maybe I will write it down again sometimes..
as far as i know. This "Siomay" is one part of a dish called "Baso Tahu". This dish seems to be mostly found in Bandung (the capital city of West Java province). Most people will recognize it as "Baso Tahu Bandung". The dish itself are a choice of several steamed items such as Baso Tahu (beancurd filled with fishcake), Siomay (Shiumay), Paria/Pare (bitter gourd filled with fishcake), Kentang (Potato filled with fishcake), Telor (Egg can be filled with fishcake or sometimes just steamed egg). Mix and match and then add peanut sauce, sweet soy sauce and kaffir lime juice to your liking. Why I'm writing this is for non-Indonesian to not mixed it with "siomay" which is also a dish which can be referred to Chinese-Indonesian Siomay which can contain pork. The Siomay is similar to chinese ones but in my opinion the indonesian ones are sweeter.
indonesia blessed many cuisine, even 40 years live in indonesia i still get 60% indonesian cuisine i ever taste . is need a lot travel to get them all. every tribe, every city have their own cuisine.. when we area travel a cross city, we always looking local food to taste..even 40 km away will make different taste.
I just want to make small correction for Martabak it will depends where did you buy one. If you go to East Java the term is terang bulan or another places it is martabak manis or sweet martabak. If you mention only martabak it is made with eggs, it was fried with green onion and beef inside.
I've always loved making personal "Top 10" lists. And lists of favorite foods, and favorite meals, and most inspiring cuisines are among the best lists to compare with friends (and my friends and I all had our lists of Favorites, like food items, cuisines, languages, museums, natural wonders, and even countries themselves; my favorite countries being: Spain, Turkey, Italy, France, Germany, Morocco, Burma, Thailand, Egypt, Sweden, and the Netherlands.) Fortunately, from my late teens until my mid forties I traveled a lot, sometimes for three weeks and other times for nine months. I even lived a residential visa in both Paris and Vienna,; which meant lots of new food and even cooking local food for others in my tiny kitchens. So the lists of my favorite foods, meals, and cuisines were prone to frequent changes - designed WOW! Riz Tafel in Amsterdam was my favorite meal for decades - hands down. Back then I would travel from wherever I was in Europe to go to Amsterdam and bring friends there just to go to the 'van Gogh Museum' followed up by that anachronistic 70 course colonial feast; a throwback to days of "The Dutch East India Company" and Holland's dominance over The Spice Islands. Then I moved to Los Angeles and soon after my old favorite meal, Riz Tafel, was replaced with a new favorite: a full Korean BBQ feast with eleven Banchan and all of the marinated meats I could dream of. And Korean BBQ has remained my favorite meal and one of my favorite cuisines every since. Of course, my favorite single food item remains... ... OYSTERS!
Just wanted to add: when the peanut sauce is the base for some foods but the tastes are pretty different among Gado2, Sate, Batagor, Siomay, Pecel sayur etc,. An Indonesian chef 👨🍳 here by the hobby since 20 years ago! 😃🙏🏼
Finally, lumper is included. Next time choose from Manado’s restaurant too including, pastel, Panama, nasi jaha. I never liked sweet Marta al but the savoury one which is much better.
Love your list, Mr. Steve! I would love to add pempek kapal selam or bakso. Although I understand its hard to fit everything when its only top 10 list haha
I'm quite surprised you've actually recommend LEMPER in your top list! Not many foreigners know that food. It's a good snack to eat in between lunch and dinner. And lemper has sibling, called AREM-AREM and you can only find in central java. The rice is normal rice cooked in coconut milk, the filling is usually potato with a hint of chili, sometimes with chicken liver too.
I love all Asian foods, seriously, my favorite. But I was always curious why Indonesian food never hit the popularity of say, Thai ( which i love )? I guess being INDO wish I could find Indonesian food easier. I'm a self-centered bastard 😊 Loved your video, but it made so hungry! 😂💚 Sambal or death!
nasi goreng origin Chinese mie goreng its obvious martabak chinese ho lok pan somay chinese siumay sate origin from india kebab if u say origin, i hv to say dish that doesn't exist in other country gudeg, pepes, papeda, rawon, bacem, ayam betutu, etc
All the food looks delicious and authentic but I just wish people would pronounce the dishes correctly and phonetically my parents are from the East Java. Kinda bugs me
This list cannot do justice. Nasi padang should be included as well as ayam betutu or balinese smoked chicken with sambal mata. Also, I feel the Chinese influence is overrepresented with mie goreng, nasi goreng and siaomay. I really don't like it when Chinese dishes are selected as being representations of pen Indonesian cuisine. It's kind of wrong to me. Consider having soto, rawon, and lontong sayur instead. nasi kuning and nasi uduk could be discussed instead of Nasi goreng. Also, krupuk, Tempe!!!! They originated in Indonesia. They might not be the main star but they make sure there is crunchiness and high protein.
Which Indonesian food do you want to try?
