EarthBound is a great RPG, designed by Shigesato Itoi in 1994-1995, and is also known by the name Mother 2.
It is best described as "random", in a good way. The game has a great emphasis on a humor, and indeed many things in the game are almost caricatured, from subplots to characters. It also has a versatile soundtrack.
Although this being a speedrun (tool-assisted at that), most of the plot of the game is intact, making this movie very entertaining to watch even as a TAS.
Unlike the previous "in bounds" movie, which aimed for a glitchless route, this TAS does incorporate some glitches while never using any that put the player out of bounds. - เกม

I love some good ol heavily RNG-manipulated RPG
I thought it was funny that the "Diamond Dog" got diamondized. I didn't even know that the Feeling Strange status effect could do that. I knew automatically fainting an enemy was possible, but... didn't know diamondized was possible for enemies. Kind of strange to see a boss fight saying "YOU WON!" with the enemy just standing there permanently frozen.

I didn't even know there was a unique sound effect for equipping something in battle.
It's not. What's happening is that it's playing the player move (when a party member's chosen action is up) sound, then gets interrupted by the equip sound. Since both sounds are similar, they sound great when put together; as if it were intentional.
The Everdred fight is a bit horrifying when you think about it. He stands there grinning the whole time while a child pummels him with a baseball bat.
I am curious why they do that fight. Isn't it optional?

I didn't expect there to be any major skips "inbounds", but the entire first major boss was skipped by somehow sneaking past the cops at the Onett exit.
I think it’s called an “overflow” or something like that. I think what happens is the player made a bunch of crap appear in the area and caused one of the roadblocks to completely disappear.
@@Marsuru1The game cannot load more than 22 objects at once, so, by spawning a lot of other objects, the barrier cannot be loaded.

This was really interesting to watch. I knew about a lot of these skips, but the diamond dog was a surprise. The RNG manipulation on this is just nuts.
In all the times I've played Earthbound, I never really used Skip Sandwiches, so at 2:34:04 when they eat one in the Cave of the Past, its pretty funny to hear their walking sound sped up, and more specifically, see the sprites tweak the heck out.
That moonside npc manipulation my goodness.

Watching this, I didn't realize you could defeat the diamond dog by deflecting it's diamondization back at it, and that the sprite doesn't vanish when you do it that way. That fight was always a hard one for me. It's crazy to see how speedrunners do stuff like that.
I've gotten that kill, but I did it with Brainshock. The hilarious thing is that Diamond Dog isn't even weak to Brainshock; Poo just won the coinflip.

I'd love to hear a commentary about the more interesting parts of the TAS. So far I wonder why the Everdred fight happened, since I thought it was optional. Also, how does the deep darkness boss get skipped?

I see this in every Mother TAS, what's the purpose of pausing every couple of moments? Does it reset some kind of cycle?
Rng manipulation to stop enemies from spawning.
In fact, RNG determines smash attacks, damage, pray effects, enemy attacks (in case they sre not scripted), enemy spawn points, actions, and item drops, NPC movement, among other things.

I want if this (and Earthbound Beginnings) come to Nintendo Switch, just like Mother 1+2 on Gameboy Advance (but that game came out only in Japan)

Hello I just played Earthbound recently. It was my first time playing it. My little brother had got me to play it. Undertale was inspired by it's quirky Ness. ;)
Oh! I forgot to mention I beat the game and got the sword of kings 🤴
The creator of Undertale is a huge Earthbound fan, and was an Earthbound modder / rom hacker for a long time, I remember reading his name on the Starman forums back in the day

Paula in the last fight (in the 5/9 pray turns) had like 150hp and everyone else was dead

Cause the tas here is in the same situation
Stick a Sea Pendant and Franklin Badge on Paula and, as long as she's still standing when Pokey turns off the Devil's Machine, the final boss is an eventual guaranteed win.

It took me so long to realize that you can paralyze pokey in the giygas fight he doesn't do it in the run I just tried one time and made the fight so easy

Sunstroke
Red flash means a status effect is damaging you. In this case it is sunstroke, which is subtracting 4HP each time.

Well its Tool Assisted, meaning EVERYTHING you see in the game is manipulated. So the chances of the smash hits are also manipulated.

yeah, it’s a shame ness loses his skin and organs after time traveling and defeating giygas, but i guess i am just glad he is alive and keeps his sense of humor. i also like that he took one of the starman from the cave of the past back with him, (it unfortunately lost its skin too), and adopted it as his little brother. happy skeleton relationship all around! :D
