    I worked here for 16 years and visited this Russian mine when it was working many times and I can say it was one of the most fascinating but depressing places I have ever been , when it was working it was run by the local mafia and you had to be careful, when the Russian miners used to visit longyearbyen a lot of the shops closed because the would literally steal anything that wasn’t bolted down

    Nice job. You should be on tv, I enjoy your work and I am sure your popularity will grow. This looks like a cold assignment. Please don't stop what your doing. BTW, the fruit you couldn't identify in the Cook islands is a variety of Candlenut tree, and the local name the young lady gave you describes it perfectly, as it means in Hawaiian "to squeeze medicine from," which is primarily what it was used for in Polynesia. It is called Kukui nut in Hawaii, where I'm from, Kukui simply means "lamp.". Oh...and my great grandfather Kana'ina Nui, dismembered, killed and boiled Captain Cook, in that order. Funny coincidence huh? I look forward to your next adventure. Take care.

      Hey Joe, thanks for enjoying our vlogs and following us along our journeys! And thanks for the information - CI has been one of my top favorite destinations, and I can't wait to go back and explore more!
      Wow at your great grandfather - I wish I had an ancestor who had some cool snippet history. Didn't Captain Cook die in the Big Island of Hawai'i?

    • @joeluna7729
      @joeluna7729 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes he did. That is where my Hawaiian side is from. On Cook's return voyage, we are told by British historians that Cook tried a common British tactic, to kidnap important members of a community, and force them to the bargaining table. This was not the best idea in Polynesia, as their royalty was considered divinely empowered by vengeful gods. I read that Cook was almost killed and eaten when he was in Tonga, but he left during a special holiday, whereby it would be bad karma to kill and eat someone during the festival. So he got lucky. In ancient Polynesia, people were enslaved, tortured to death (Their screams gave the torturers their "Mana," their spiritual power, and they were eaten. Their bones were often used as walking sticks, and so forth. Trophies. There are some silly folks who want to re-write history and they try to say that my great grandfather dismembered him, butchered him and cooked him as part of a ceremony, but never ate him. Does that make sense? Some folks are denying their own history, and can't explain the remains which archaeologists have found, clearly showing that cannibalism was common in Hawaii, as it is was across the Pacific. In fact, a few years ago, a German tourist was eaten on the island of Nuku Hiva, the closest of the French Polynesian islands to Hawaii, where the Hawaiians came from. And our family has the oral tradition. Okay, enough about that. I hope to visit the Cook islands one day and see if I can understand their native dialect. Take care :)

    Hello! Very informative video and beautiful scenery!
    I am planning myself a trip to Svalbard; Is it possible to enter Pyramiden without a guide?

    • @theRTWguys
      @theRTWguys  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Miikka - thanks for watching! The quick answer is no - the only way you can reach Pyramiden is by an arranged tour (assuming that you are not sailing through Svalbard), and upon landing in Pyramiden, the guided tour is included in your visit. Logistically, it is near impossible to plan your independent trip in Svalbard - Barentsburg, Pyramiden, or Isfjord Radio - unless you have your own boat. All have to be arranged by tours.
      Besides, it is a private property, and people would have rifle with them, so don't want to mess around too much there LOL.

    • @Finnish6boy9
      @Finnish6boy9 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theRTWguys Thank you for the quick answer!
      I was thinking about renting a snowmobile and driving from Longyearbyen to Pyramiden through Sassen-Bünsow park. Do you happen to have any information or opinions about that? (maybe i'll just scope Pyramiden from far away 🤓)

    • @theRTWguys
      @theRTWguys  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ufff - that would be a hard, long journey through the polar bear country! You will need a rifle for sure, and a good guide along with it as where to go and how to navigate the landscape. So I honestly won't recommend it to anyone to do it - besides, I don't think the Pyramiden gatekeeper would let you wondering around by yourself in their private property.
      You can contact the Visit Svalbard for more information.

    • @theRTWguys
      @theRTWguys  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used the Arctic Explorer, which has the Barentsburg visit in am and Pyramiden in pm. If you want a taste of Russia - definitely Barentsburg, where you can find Russians/Ukrainian to interact with. Pyramiden is a defunct and abandoned city, which has a completely different feeling.
