Excellent information! Before hybrid seeds became available in the early 1930's, farmers grew a wide verity of seed crops that were hardy and thrived on their land. There were hundreds of varieties of corn and beans. After plants were bred for uniformity to allow for mechanical harvesting, many plant varieties were lost forever. Had it not been for farm and gardening families who kept growing the heirloom seed and later the Seed Savers Exchange, our farm crops family tree today would look like a telephone pole. To better see understand the urgent need for banking plant genetics. By growing a national crop that has the same genetics, you have the making of the Great Irish Potato Famine of 1845. ~ Thank you for making people more aware of the value of preserving our food plants genetic treasures for the Future.
So I checked those Canadian numbers and according to database they store the wheat and barley in majority, then some corn, beans, and grass based on institution number of CAN004. however those particular box numbers are not in database, they were either withdrawn meanwhile in last two years, or the woman is not telling us the whole story what is stored there :-D
Reaperz zz technically all of the seeds are genetically modified. GMOs are not just some crazy science combined things, like a jellyfish cat or whatever, but also things that have been cross bred and selectively bred. So even thousands of years ago when we started growing things and planting the ones that tasted best, we were genetically modifying plants! I think she meant something like a carrot potato mix, something really made in a lab.
I'm imagining some kind of epic post-apocalyptic adventure story of people finding and busting into the seed vault to bring back food seeds to a ravaged world.
And if you didn’t know. The main guy behind these dopop shot Mr bill gates own a nice piece of that facility and he also own majority of all farm crops in America. I wonder what he is up to. Hmmm
well North Korea will be fine, their people are so used to doing stupid menial tasks that being told to be human bees & hand pollinate everything will just be treated as a normal day lol seriously though, it would be a problem, but there are options like hand pollination & bees aren't the only pollinator & presumably any government depositing seeds has thought of this & has deposited seeds with a mix of pollination methods & those that don't need pollination to produce food

If they really cared about the biodiversity and future, wouldn't even the "illicit" plants matter considering they might/ do have medical or scientific purposes.
They're really hurting their own cause for some "this natural plant is bad bc I say so" argument. There are epilepsy cases were marijuana derived medicines are the only thing that can give them a qaulity of life. The people saying marijuana can't be stored there, are saying those epilepsy patients don't deserve to be seizure free because some random dude might like smoking it.
I would think so. There are a lot of medically useful drugs that have no recreational application; the world would be hurting if we lost some of those.
The goal of the Svalbard seed vault is to contain the seeds used for agricultural biodiversity. The plants stored are all the plants that make up what is used in every day food. Which is why plants like marijuana aren't stored yes there are cases where marijuana can be used for medical purposes, however marijuana can't feed people and keep people alive. If all the plants and seeds in the world outside the vault is destroyed, no one is going to be concerned over whether marijuana seeds are safe there are far greater worries.
@@-Offstar Counter point, those "drug" plants are still agriculture and add to the biodiversity. Not all agricultural crops are food. There is clearly plenty of room for more seeds so why not store those plants?
Same here! Also, this story remind me of the story about the siege of Leningrad. A group of Russian botanists were in a secret vault and barricaded themselves against German soldiers and just as much starving citizens. They starved to death rather than consume the, at the time, greatest collection of seeds they were guarding. This is less dramatic of course, but to me just as noble.
YAY! Finally, someone noticed NORWAY! Our wonderful country finally gets a bit of recognition! This, has never been achieved by manki... Norwegiankind...
Let's hope that the seed vault can withstand a global nuclear war, and let's also hope that we won't ever have to make any more withdrawals from the vault.

+Andrew Harper 'Seedless bananas' aren't really seedless. They're hybrids and have very small seeds. Hybrids are different from GMO's. It sure would be nice to learn that the bananas have been saved. Along with chocolate and coffee, probably one of the most popular foods on the planet.
The difference is that selective breeding follows pretty much the same rules of standard evolution. Genemodded seeds don't follow that rule, and since we don't have a guaranteed understanding of what would happen with those genemodded seeds in perpetuity, we can't accurately predict what changes we would make that have later impacts on the seeds. Of course there's decisions we make that might lead to a cascading failure state if we simply selectively bred something to a desired state until it degenerated to a point of nonfunctionality= See dogs, for example, and their current purebreds that have a high likelihood of health problems, such as the large dogs with hip and spine issues. But, all in all, since the seeds that have been behaviorally trained in certain environments to succeed in those environments follow the standard evolutionary paths, they have genetic drift in each seed. That's not necessarily the case for gene-modded seeds. Because of that, the amount of variance becomes much more predictable, but we haven't actually put the time in to determine the predictability of those seeds to degeneration. Going back to the dog example, if you have a few purebred dogs that breeed with each other over a couple generations, it doesn't matter that they're purebred, they'll eventually become a mnutt, that doesn't have the same health problems that consistently plague the purebreds. Maybe the mutt will have one, but it isn't likely to have *all* of them, and continued free access to the gene pool will lead that mutts offspring to select for the positive traits on average. Plants work the same way.
@@Dracomandriuthus "The difference is that selective breeding follows pretty much the same rules of standard evolution." I dare to contradict. What we've done to the banana for instance as far from evolutionary beneficial for the plant as it can possibly get. Without constant maintenance, the whole species would vanish within less than a decade. And the same could be said about many of our crops. Just because the method is different doesn't mean you can't get similar Frankenstein results via selective breeding. And on the contrary, gene modification does not necessarily result in unpredictable outcome.
@@lonestarr1490 I'm not saying that it follows the same process of selecting for the best success, I'm saying that bred plants have genetic drift and genetic variance.

@@cartermanjohn7702 yeah we do. The effects are that they're larger, more nutritious and more resistant to disease. That's all genetically modified means. The strawberries you buy in the store are massive versions of their natural counterparts.
I think it’s because this vault isnt intended for helping people survive the apocalypse, but to rebuild when things get better, and get earth’s biodiversity back up to what it was before
They should allow genetically modified seeds, that are modified to make plants survive better in different climates, that way if the earth dramatically shifts in climate we'll still be ok and all the seeds wont be useless
Only 4.4 million views in years on an honest and sincere knowledge based video! - All misinformation, hate and propaganda video from other channels are standing 10million plus with in a month or 2. Yup we need this vault more than ever.
Bente: "No genetically modified material goes in here." Me: Does that mean they have the disgusting green short bananas with giant seeds and the small watermelons with no red part?
Regardless they still couldn’t accept those bananas and melons because they reproduce through cutting and grafting. As it name suggests, the Vault only collects seeds.
Artificial selection is apparently okay. GMO is one of the few things I've never understood the raid against. I mean, apart from seedless seed monopolies and illegal stuff.
@@Eshwald I'm sorry, can you clarify what you're speaking to? Artificial selection or seedless seeds? Avoiding artificial selection would mean that you could only grow seeds of plants as they were before human agriculture existed (i.e. ~12,000 years ago). Plants with poor yield, size, taste, nutrition and resilience. And I've never heard bans of GMOs accept certain modifications before.
3:25 no weed? Among the species of plant preserved in the vault are around 21,500 seeds belonging to the cannabis genus, donated in 2014. The seeds were provided by Alchimia, a Spanish seed bank. I guess she's right when she said they don't look in the boxes...
Agreed. If they're going to invest in a biodiversity preserve like this, why would they not preserve even the most dangerous or poisonous plants? Not saying that cannabis is either, of course, but it seems contrary to the vault's purpose to only allow certain plants.
I think she either lied , or didn't know about cannabis. . and they must have hemp in there. . which has miniscule levels of THC. . A few years of selecting the highest potency crops and weed would be back. . GMO is a huge factor in getting the best bud
The seeds are deposited by the world's governments. Do you really think they'd send their stash to another country for safekeeping? Pretty sure that's one seed they'll be caring for at home :) You would hope hemp is included though, it is a potentially very good choice for what she spoke of with changing conditions

Canada: Oats, Barley, Wheat, North Korea: Rice, Corn, Grass Taiwan: Sorghum, Kale I could probably do more, but I've already been at it for several hours... it's hard to search on the database... They may not all be 100% accurate, but maybe at least close.

lol like they explained, it's like a bank vault, so it shouldn't matter if they know what's in it or not. Their job is only to return it to the depositor. If the depositor didn't label the seeds or keep records... well that was pretty dumb of them!
The seed bank had a slight water issue due to rising temperatures. Some water flooded into the main entrance, but froze a few meters inside, no seeds were harmed. Renovations were made and completed in 2019 to prevent further water seepage, but how long until this happens again? The ice is melting faster than engineers planned when they designed the seed vault.
Wonder if they've made a vault that stores the genomes of every animal species on the planet, with the rate of extinction occurring now and the possibility that maybe we can bring them back in the future. Jurassic Park confirmed?
Every animal? Expensive and pointless. How about the unique ones that have special qualities not in many animals? And why would we want to make them not extinct? Clearly their species wasn't fit to survive if they all died off.
A horrible mistake. Morning Glory, Peyote, Mimosa Hostilis, Datura, Psilocybin and Ergot spores and lots of other plants or fungi containing psychedelics should be conserved and protected. +Michael Hope I'm not too knowledgeable about vaults but I've been on tours of data centers and most of those structures are just as big as this vault and cost around that number as well. So structurally it doesn't seem to cost much to build but no doubt the maintenance and security of that place should cost several millions a year.
Rather curious about the cannabis seed ban. Yea, it /can/ be used as a recreational drug, but that is far from it's only use, in fact the point could be argued that just the non-drug related aspects of the plant could outweigh a huge percentage of the usefulness of other seeds stored there.

Interesting point. I have no idea about agriculture, so thanks for sharing this little piece of information! =)
Are the seeds that Svalbard keeps heirloom or not??
So I checked those Canadian numbers and according to database they store the wheat and barley in majority, then some corn, beans, and grass based on institution number of CAN004. however those particular box numbers are not in database, they were either withdrawn meanwhile in last two years, or the woman is not telling us the whole story what is stored there :-D

Why store the seeds when you can have the real thing?
Bro u just made this all up.
Corn is genetically modified :/
Reaperz zz technically all of the seeds are genetically modified. GMOs are not just some crazy science combined things, like a jellyfish cat or whatever, but also things that have been cross bred and selectively bred. So even thousands of years ago when we started growing things and planting the ones that tasted best, we were genetically modifying plants! I suggest you watch into the night season 2 on Netflix!!! I think they did it well!
And then there aren't any seeds because people have been actually depositing other things and lying all the time
I'm from Canada so this vault just looks like my garage.
Imagine after dooms day all those seeds without the bees!!!
TrippleZ3D you got the point..
well North Korea will be fine, their people are so used to doing stupid menial tasks that being told to be human bees & hand pollinate everything will just be treated as a normal day lol
seriously though, it would be a problem, but there are options like hand pollination & bees aren't the only pollinator & presumably any government depositing seeds has thought of this & has deposited seeds with a mix of pollination methods & those that don't need pollination to produce food
we all will have to pollinate by hand!! slaves to plants we will have to be!
Freeze them bees then
We don't need the bees that much, there are hundreds of thousands other species that pollinate the Earth.

Calm down pot heads.
There are 1700 other seed vaults in the world. Plenty of illicit seeds and spores will be saved.

"Genetically Modified Crops aren't allowed"
Every single crop that we have selectively bred: Are we a joke to you?
@@Dracomandriuthus Thanks for the detailed explanation and your time!
@@Dracomandriuthus "The difference is that selective breeding follows pretty much the same rules of standard evolution."
I dare to contradict.
