I visited Pyramiden in the late 1970's when it was still a working Russian coal mine - fascinating place. We were treated to a tour of the town including a meal in the canteen and a visit to the museum. They had a big sports hall and a cinema where we were shown a Russian cartoon. I remember trading lighters and digital watches for fur hats. We spend 2 weeks camping in some huts across the fjord from Pyramiden, are these huts still there and have you ever visited them? They had a couple of ponds beside the hut that we used for washing and swimming - very cold!
Omg that is the coolest story!! How come you were there to visit! I want to know more! Tell me anything you remember 🤩 I don't think I've been to that cabin, but Christoffer has! Christoffer asks if that cabin had electricity?
@@CeciliaBlomdahl We were on a School Expedition in 1979 and stayed for 3 weeks in the cabins across Billefjord from Pyramiden. As the tourist industry didn't really exist at that time we had to ship all of our supplies to Longyearbyen in crates from Bergen and then transport it all to the cabins using inflatables. At the time the cabins didn't have electricity or even windows. As part of the trip we crossed over to Pyramiden, walked through the town and then hiked over to Ekmanfjord before crossing back to Pyramiden to be picked up. When we got back to Pyramiden we had a several hour wait for the inflatables to pick us up and were shown around the town by some friendly English speaking geologists. I remember the museum as it had a stuffed polar bear that had been shot in the town as it was a danger to people, you could count the 22 bullet holes in it before they managed to kill it. It made us appreciate the danger of polar bears more and how important it was not to have food in your tents. As well as this hiking trip we spent the rest of the time ice climbing on the glaciers. Other people on the trip were involved in ringing birds at the mouth of Isfjorden and others collecting plant samples from around another set of cabins that were closer to Longyearbyen but still on Billefjord. All of us were part of a study to measure the effects of 24 hours daylight on insulin levels in the body. This involved taking urine samples every time you went, in the end we had 10,000 samples which we had to bring back through UK Customs at Heathrow Airport - this raised a few eyebrows and took a bit of explaining!

What an absolutely beautiful vlog..the opening music with you walking alone in the ghost mine was perfect for the mood…Christoffer walking (with Grim ) in his signature beanie..the lit lantern swinging on the boat…I think this is one of your best videos ever…So much to see..and your information..like the three that stay in the hotel during polar nights..so spooky and brave
What you were walking on is the cover planking for the concrete ducting below. Ducting is used to carry essential services to the buildings. Water, electricity snd in Russia also hot water for communal heating systems. Perhaps here also.
Fun fact - I am reading a science fiction novel, Lines of Departure, by Marko Kloos and a major part of it takes place on the colony planet of New Svalbard, and in the town of New Longyearbyen. Naturally, it is ice-bound! Got a kick out of that as I was watching this video.
I just watched this video again (I had watched it a couple of years ago).....because I just watched the movie "Arctic Void"-filmed in Svalbard and in this mining ghost town. Thanks Cecilia for this great video!
The building that housed the birds, reminded me of Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, The Birds! Very Spooky! Kept waiting for Christopher and Grim to be attacked as they walked away. You are so creative in your presentation. We appreciate you sharing it with us. Looking forward to the next video to continue.
I visited Pyramiden to do a photo documentary in 2019. It was interesting although the visit could have been longer. It really is like stepping back into a time capsule. I didn't expect to find a teeny coffee shop!
So glad that you did a video on Pyramiden. Before watching your channel that was all I knew about Spitsbergen/Svalbard but I've now come to appreciate the natural beauty of the island through your wonderful films. Great to see that you took Grim along too.
This vlog is one of my favourite! It evokes that melancholic Russian "nostal'gija" that I felt every time I visited Russia. Thank you for sharing this microcosm with us!

The food looked incredible, poor Grim deserved some dumplings for braving a fox, lol.
Wow, so weird/spooky. I just LOVE the old Cold War era stuff just lying around like it's just been left there. There's an old Nike/Hercules base just a little way west of us and they've made it a paintball field. I am shocked that a "ghost town" could have such a complete infrastructure. The food looked delicious; the premises so clean and well kept. How does it possibly stay financially afloat???
Yep, these northern islands are great. Small population. When there are Russians around, they are not the Great Danger, they are just people living a similar life to those Norwegians or Danes or Finnish or whatever. Yeah, you need visa, but when your ship has some trouble, you never know, you can ask them for help. Sad, that village has disappeared.
Wow. This is very cool. The color contrast of the village against the neutral background really pops. Kind of a bizarre place for a hotel, a bit eerie. I am looking forward to the next one. Hi Grimm!

This place is amazing! Loved hearing Lambada in the background of the restaurant and shame it caused you problems 😢brilliant video and tour around this cool place!
15:30 I have goosebumps now. As a child, it was my favorite cake, because every time I went to get bread at the nearest bakery, I bought it for change. I remember very well its price of 5 rubles ~ 20 cents. It called potato or kartoshka in russian. Another one soviet thing, it makes from bakery waste (biscuit crumbs). Well it not a tiramisu, but for me it's something more.
Wow thanks for the video!!! I am living in Tromso, so I am so interested in Svalbard. All your videos interested me very much! Christopher got such a nonchalant charisma :D. I didnt know about Barentsburg, so glad to learn something new about Svalbard!! :)
What a cool place! I'm surprised there weren't more people visiting. Looks like you guys had it to yourselves. And someone needs to write a scary book or movie set there over the winter 😯.
That is so nice that you can leave your dog outside and know he isn't going to be stolen, I can't even leave mine in the garden as so many dogs are being stolen from fenced gardens. Amazing video as always
I know dogs are stolen in some parts of the world. It's very cruel to steal a dog or a cat, or a goat, turkey etc. You are separating the dog from the people he/she loves if you abduct him. I can forgive someone who steals a car, or money. But not a dog or a cat. 😸😼
Cecilia, thank you so much for sharing these gems with us! If I was 30 years younger I'd probably make an attempt to live in Svalbard. Love the cold weather and snow, was born and raised in it and now I live in Texas (too hot!)
Honestly, the video quality, narration and your knack to tell an interesting story is worthy to show on any world news program or documentry series.

These elevated walkways were a smart choice. I can see this place incurring heavy snowfall and having raised walkways mitigates this issue.
It's probably not walkways, it is boxed in hot water and sewage pipes between buildings since they cannot be buried and melt the permafrost.

This was so interesting! I can't wait to see the next vlog
Fascinating video Cecilia! One of my favourites of yours I think. Would love to stay overnight there, although not in the winter… would be too much like The Shining! 😬👀😁
Nice video! Always its Nice to see places in remote areas. This Place surely has full of potebtials and I hope one day it goes back to fully funtioning again.
always looking forward to your videos!
You're the best! 🧡
Cecilia, that was most enjoyable and fascinating! Thank you for so much information and great video!!!
Very cool! I would visit there in a heart beat! That food looked incredible. Thanks for sharing this.
Very interesting, more than just glaciers, mountains and snow, add Ghost Towns! Great video love learning about where you live and travel. Looking forward to your hike. Doggie loves to Grim❤
Hi Chris! I am so glad she is back with you and the baby! :-)
I once spent an hour on google maps wandering around Pyramiden while I was procrastinating from studying lol
Oh wow, that was an awesome episode! I've always wondered what happened to our town on Spitzberg island, and somehow I never got to learn, before today! Thanks, Cecilia! ^_^
It certainly looked nice!
I just love places like this one, thanks for the show.
A truly beautiful story and the history of the town.
Wow thanks for the video!!! I am living in Tromso, so I am so interested in Svalbard. All your videos interested me very much! Christopher got such a nonchalant charisma :D. I didnt know about Barentsburg, so glad to learn something new about Svalbard!! :)
The Brazilian music on the background!! 🇧🇷 I loved it 😍
This was so interesting! I really loved it. Now i'm interested in Barentsburg. I hope you can film there one there!
Thanks, that was so awesome, I can't wait for the next video!
This was so interesting! Will be researching Pyramiden and Svalbard. Love your videos!!!
Amazing video!! Now I can’t stop singing Chorando se fou quem um dia..... 🎼🎤 flash back when I was young and dancing lambada 😂😂
@@kazzicup I agree, it is so traumatic
Fantastic video Cecilia! I'm looking forward to future videos on the other settlements on Svalbard like Ny-Ålesund, Sveagruva and Barentsburg now!
Cecilia, thank you so much for sharing these gems with us! If I was 30 years younger I'd probably make an attempt to live in Svalbard. Love the cold weather and snow, was born and raised in it and now I live in Texas (too hot!)
I visited in 1992 times marches on. Hitched on a ship from Tromso. The world is yours when you are young and Covid is only in si fi films.
