just picked up my Asus rig ally today with a 2TB SSD. this process went flawless for me, super appreciate this video! only thing that scared me was after I switched out the SSD, I put the back on and put in all the screws and it still wouldn't power on. I had to plug it in and then power on. So, if anyone else hit that issue, try plugging it in with the power cord. Awesome video!

Decided to swap my steam deck 2tb WD SN70 SSD to my Ally, which pretty easy. Hardest problem I had was removing the Ally SSD because my fat fingers made it hard to get good grab to pull out. Asus Cloud recovery was very helpful. Decided to add copper heat shield to my SDD but probably useless, but had an extra ssd heatsheild so decided to use it before it get misplaced. Will probably put the original rog ally 512gb ssd into steam deck, and will probably use 1tb micro SD card on steam deck. Don't trust using my SD card on the ally. So many reports of SD cards getting fried, or SD reader overheating

I find they really prioritized the fans being quiet, but the temps are pretty high as a result. I adjusted my fan curve and dropped temps by like 25-30c

No problem, only thing to note though is that after o posted the video others noticed some performance dips on 319. I am assuming a new one will be pushed out soon, so keep an eye out for that one as well.
It likely could, however I recommend only using the proper sizes for these small screws to avoid stripping the heads. All screwdriver requirements should be outlined in the video.
You can either clone your SSD (I have a video for that process as well) or start fresh with cloud recovery. Personally I prefer cloning, but I wanted to cover both options
You can do a cloning option if you want. If you just insert the SSD it will be blank. You’ll need to install windows and the rog ally drivers. Cloning is a good option. I made a video for that as well.

Are you possibly going to do a video that show how to setup Armour Crate. I have real issues with getting a Steam Game to operate. The game will start but then it seems to go back to the introductory screen. I can't go any further then that. With Game Pass Games, I have no issues. Is anyone else having problems with playing steam games on the Rog Ally?
Thanks for the reply, got it working. Think the internet connection was not fast, installed speedtest on the Rog and sometimes only 3 a 4 mb per second while my phone gets 30 to 40 mb per second.. Same network.
I think I got too impatient as it was stuck at checking for over 3 hours and thought it was something wrong, instead I used macrium and made a clone within 35min and was good to go.
@@okestgamer agreed, i just wish the "checking" screen had some kind of indicator progress bar or percentage to allow users to see if its stuck or making progress or not. none the less, nice video!
@@datpspguy yeah that would be nice, I’m guessing it was intended to be as short as it was on my second attempt. So they probably didn’t even consider that.
Do you know why I might be getting “connect to wifi” pop-up during the cloud recovery process at 4:00. This is after it already asked me to connect at the beginning of the recovery process. The issue is that the keyboard is not functional so I can't insert my wifi password to proceed. And yes I do have the 3.19 Bios update.
Hmm so for the Wi-Fi, it seems to be pretty finicky (I had that issue as well). I ended up plugging in my usb c hub with a Ethernet cord. If you can go closer to your router for a stronger signal it may help. For the keyboard, press the back button (M1) and up on the dpad
I was wondering, could i just move all my files (windows, games, etc) to a microSDXC card and make it my boot drive before installing the SSD and moving them over to it, and then make the SSD my boot drive?
I'm exchanging my Asus Rog Ally for a new one. The one I have now the SD card slot stopped working. Figured with the new one I would just upgrade the SSD this time. With the new one should I upgrade the SSD first before turning it on or turn it on first, do all the updates, bios and than upgrade the SSD? Sorry for the long question. I'm new to this.
@okestgamer Upgraded my SSD card. Even picked up the iFixit kit you used. I was hesitant to upgrade, but following your video, everything worked out great. Thanks again.
Hey man ,im stuck on the cloud recovery page after ive loaded it like after the bios update i done it the other night and now it wont reset when im trying to , its just stuck on the recovery part ,i dunno what im doing wrong
Hmm this has happened and tends to happen for various reasons. What I would suggest is to perhaps shut down, re-install the old SSD and maybe try the cloning method. I have a video on that method as well. It's been awhile since the video was made, so the issues may be different on the newer versions of the software and bios
@@okestgamer thanks for the reply but I managed to fix it ,I reinstalled the old SSD and then put the new one back into it ,that worked and it's now set up ,but you did help with how to do it all which is much appreciated, cheers
Sadly this is what I’ve heard from others. Best advice is to make sure you have the correct size screw driver and don’t force it. You can also try putting a layer of tinfoil over the screw to help it grab. Obviously ensure the battery is unplugged and no power remain (hold power button for a few seconds with battery unplugged)
Appreicate the reply. I had to return the device and get another one. Going through the process again. My new problem is the bios is on 323 and I'm stuck on the recovery screen like you said.
Yeah that seems to have been an issue for many. Usually it comes down to updating bios or firmware, and recently I’ve seen people have the issue when their clock is set to the wrong time or date.
Hi, I used the 2tb ssd but for some reason, my games download super slow. It wasn't doing this before the ssd swap. My internet connection is 1gig. Is the ssd causing this?
Mine got stuck for a long time in the checking Cuz i didn't update my bios. And now it wont work it will just keep looping in the rog black logo. Do i need to re install a new windows on my device or how do i need to update my bios?
@@okestgamer i didnt put any ssd. When i updated some drivers then suddenly my device restarted and then the blue screen pops up and it says my pc run into a problem then the loop begins it won't boot anymore. So is it okay to intall a new windows?
Question. My cloud recovery said failed do you want to try again? Now it’s checking for a longtime. If it fails again should I restart the process or what should be my next step?
The best I found to do was I just hook it up to my phones hot spot and it has no issues you just gotta keep an eye on it make sure the phone doesnt disconnect or vice versa.. If i try to use my home wifi it refuses to cooperate and i dont have an ethernet. So you may have luck doing it that way.
@okestgamer I was using Philips 1. It work on the other screws to take the back off but this screw is not moving. I might of script it so hopefully my friend could fixed it
If in the future you ever get that and it starts to slip even a little, add a small piece of tinfoil (battery is unplugged so you should be ok) just big enough to fill the new gap and it can help. Some screws just don’t budge
I get a Network error at the 3min 49s part of this video. Is it possible you have to format the SSD before attempting this, because I noticed it says you must have enough available space?
Well I discovered that for whatever reason it just had a problem with my home network. I hotspotted my phone and the update went through fine, just slowly. Now that it’s all installed I’m back over onto the home internet plan. Baffling 🤷♂️
That’s odd, I’ve heard of others having the issue. Mine did it once, but I was at the edge of the Wi-Fi signal. I just plugged in my usb c hub and Ethernet after. Glad you got it sorted
Followed all the steps in the video, bios update, swapped ssd and when I boot the device back on a red box appears that says "Secure Boot Violation" any way around this that doesnt include swapping back to the old ssd?
Can someone explain to me what is the point of the cliud recovery here? New ssd... why would there need to be any limd of "recovery" if you want to start a new windows
Good vid got my shit on Christmas and sadly just did this and said fuck it cuz the stupid enclosure I got to clone my playnite and games and launchers didn’t fit my ssd even tho it said it would Lolol like what the fuck.. so started it all over and let Jesus take the wheel lol need that storage haha

No problem, yeah it would be a long time with the net. You could setup a phone hotspot if you have plenty of data and a good connection
Is it only the one game? If you want to take a short video of it, you can send it to contact@okestgamer.com and I’ll have a look.
Anyone else had a a problem with removing the m.2 screw? I now have to rma the thing because the screw is stripped 🤬
I saw one other person have an issue with that. Maybe some were tightened a little too much
How did you fix this?
How did you upgrade to 3.19 bios?
Rog ally only have 1 slot for ssd?
Yeah just one slot
Currently stuck on “checking”. Updated to bios 323
Unfortunately this has been happening to a lot of people. Had you done the full updates prior to the swap?
@@okestgamer any tips on what to do when it gets stuck on ''checking''? Also bios 323...
@@Flokkie8 hmm, did you do all the firmware updates as well?
Thanks for the reply, got it working. Think the internet connection was not fast, installed speedtest on the Rog and sometimes only 3 a 4 mb per second while my phone gets 30 to 40 mb per second.. Same network.
That’s odd, maybe going closer to the router will work for the future
I think I got too impatient as it was stuck at checking for over 3 hours and thought it was something wrong, instead I used macrium and made a clone within 35min and was good to go.
Cloning is another good option, for this particular video I decided to go with the cloud recovery for newer users
Is it possible for a 3 terabyte SSD upgrade?
Currently I have only see 2tb 2230 size SSDs. Some have modded them to fit a 2280 size, but I can’t speak to whether that’s a good idea or not
@@okestgamer ok thanks
No problem
Is there no way to transfer all your games and saves etc?
I made a second video called ssd clone. Check that one out
So if I get a 1TB ssd, I'm extending 500gb of storage only since I get rid of the old ssd right? Not worth the investment if so, unless I go for 2TB
2tb would be a good option. I showed 1tb to make my wallet forgive me for all the purchases lol.
For the keyboard, press the back button (M1) and up on the dpad
ez fix for me was set up hotspot no password and worked like a charm
@@angelzazueta5428 seems like some networks it just has issues with.
Thank you for the tips I just ended up putting my internet on public. I don’t know why I didn’t think about that the first time lol.
I put 4 TB on my ally by using Nvme 2280 4TB and using extended Nvme corde
Where did you end up placing the new ssd?
Some how my version is 323,how can i downgrade it.
No need to downgrade, you want to be on as new a version as possible.
I was wondering, could i just move all my files (windows, games, etc) to a microSDXC card and make it my boot drive before installing the SSD and moving them over to it, and then make the SSD my boot drive?
You’re better off cloning the drive if you’re wanting to transfer everything. I wouldn’t count on the SD card to do everything for windows
Will this save game file data on the new ssd
Yes it will carry everything over
Is it possible to upgrade my windows home to pro without swapping to a new SSD?
I would imagine you could.
How long time need to wait ?
The total process for me from start to finish was about 1 hour
It void the warranty if you upgrade ssd?
I would think if you put the old ssd back in and close it up with no damage it should be returnable.
My Wi-Fi is pretty secure. What did you have to do to connect to the Wi-Fi with the new drive?
I actually used a Ethernet cord plugged into my dock.
@@okestgamer I guess I need to get a dock then.
Not fully needed, but it definitely made it easier. I had the Wi-Fi error as well
I'm exchanging my Asus Rog Ally for a new one. The one I have now the SD card slot stopped working. Figured with the new one I would just upgrade the SSD this time. With the new one should I upgrade the SSD first before turning it on or turn it on first, do all the updates, bios and than upgrade the SSD? Sorry for the long question. I'm new to this.
I would do the bios updates, all myasus updates, and the armoury crate updates. Then swap it over.
@@okestgamer Thank you!
@okestgamer Upgraded my SSD card. Even picked up the iFixit kit you used. I was hesitant to upgrade, but following your video, everything worked out great. Thanks again.
Glad to hear it! That kit will come in handy if you ever need a precise kit. I definitely don’t regret that purchase.
Do you know if there will ever be 4 tb m.2 2230
I’m sure at some point there will be
Hey man ,im stuck on the cloud recovery page after ive loaded it like after the bios update i done it the other night and now it wont reset when im trying to , its just stuck on the recovery part ,i dunno what im doing wrong
@@jamesquinn6828 glad it worked out for you
My ssd screw not even stripped and it wont turn. I dnt want to force it then strip it smh.
Hi,
I used the 2tb ssd but for some reason, my games download super slow. It wasn't doing this before the ssd swap. My internet connection is 1gig. Is the ssd causing this?
They had an update for the Wi-Fi card in the myasus app. Perhaps that would help
Mine got stuck for a long time in the checking Cuz i didn't update my bios. And now it wont work it will just keep looping in the rog black logo. Do i need to re install a new windows on my device or how do i need to update my bios?
I would put your old ssd back in, boot up, and then you should be good from there to update.
@@okestgamer i didnt put any ssd. When i updated some drivers then suddenly my device restarted and then the blue screen pops up and it says my pc run into a problem then the loop begins it won't boot anymore. So is it okay to intall a new windows?
@@seamanrider6453 you could do that and then download the asus drivers, armoury crate, and myasus
Question. My cloud recovery said failed do you want to try again? Now it’s checking for a longtime. If it fails again should I restart the process or what should be my next step?
Had you completed all of the bios updates and firmware prior to the ssd swap?
The best I found to do was I just hook it up to my phones hot spot and it has no issues you just gotta keep an eye on it make sure the phone doesnt disconnect or vice versa.. If i try to use my home wifi it refuses to cooperate and i dont have an ethernet. So you may have luck doing it that way.
Im having a hard time taking the screw out of the hard drive
What size of screw driver are you using?
@okestgamer I was using Philips 1. It work on the other screws to take the back off but this screw is not moving. I might of script it so hopefully my friend could fixed it
@@michaelmacorso4479 yeah those little screws are kinda delicate. The good news is it’s a very common screw, so getting a replacement should be easy
@@okestgamer yea just a pain. Everything was going smooth till the hard drive. That screw didn't want to budge.
Is it a new SSD or repurposed older one?
@@okestgamer it’s brand new
Well I discovered that for whatever reason it just had a problem with my home network.
Yo bro I realized something Asus never tell us about the screen replaceable if something go worng we got fix it right

Followed all the steps in the video, bios update, swapped ssd and when I boot the device back on a red box appears that says "Secure Boot Violation" any way around this that doesnt include swapping back to the old ssd?
Send me a photo of the bios screen (like your bios settings) in the discord and I’ll compare it to mine to see if something was accidentally toggled
Can someone explain to me what is the point of the cliud recovery here? New ssd... why would there need to be any limd of "recovery" if you want to start a new windows
Makes it easier to have all the drivers and software ready to go. You can do it manually as well
I keep getting stuck on connection failed try another WLAN AP?
Might just be having issues with your home network. Do you have a usb c hub with Ethernet? Might be a way to get past it
Use your phones hot spot, you wont have trouble.

I have a video on that method as well. Wanted to cover both options for people looking for some help.
So why didnt it transfer everything from your old ssd to your new one if its using the cloud
Tutorial’s sake. Funny thing is I had to exchange my ally for a new one so I need to setup the ssd again. I might either do a fresh windows tutorial, or cloning video.
What app is that that you showed after installing the ssd?
Which timestamp?
@@okestgamer 3:27
@@dluck04 ah that is just the bios menu. You can enter it by holding i believe it was volume up and then pressing the power button (from shutdown)
