- Is this the best bass fishing combo? So many pros talk about all the specialty rod and reel combos you need for bass fishing but in reality there is one combo that will do most of the techniques in bass fishing. This is in my opinion the best rod and reel combo for bass fishing and the one that every bass angler should have!

Great video! I would like to see the video on the only 3 rods you need for all of bass fishing. Especially the spinning rod you need for the most applications.

Completely agree! You don't need tons of combos, but I like to have them so I don't have to constantly re-tie when switching to a different bait.

Great content! More people need to recognize that the vast majority of anglers don't have an unlimited budget to work with. Doing more with less is a great idea.

You nailed it. You really only need two rods as stated one with fluoro or mono (anglers choice) and one with braid. 🎣

Love your videos Nathan! This is a timely video. I literally just got a Dobyns Fury rod for Christmas. I have it matched with a Kastking 7.2:1 reel. I love them and Garcia Black Maxx 6.4:1 (IIRC) reels. You can't kill 'em and they're literally $50.00 reels.

Thanks Nathan. You just described exactly how I started. I think I was at 5 mh/f rods and fishing anglers choice tournaments in the late 90's oh and cashed my share of checks.
Bass fishermen do over think it. I think it's part of the addiction and the rod, reel and lure companies telling us what we need.
Great reel choices, that Lews and Shimano really are no brainers, I use both and never had a lick of trouble.
Tune in to tactical bassin and you will think you need a G. Loomis NRX and Shimano Antares to catch a bass.
They are definitely great options!
I am a riverbank fisherman here in Fredericton New Brunswick. I have a med fast Quantum smoke rod with micro line guides and a Quantum smoke S3 baitcaster with 7.3 gear. I use softbaits to top water baits. I have two Quantum smoke S3 baitcaster, one has ten pounds Sufix siege mono 14lbs on my other reel

@Nathan Quince Fishing Thank you. I like it a lot. The reel weights 6.9 oz. I don't know what the weight of the rod is. The whole combo is very light compared to my Daiwa baitcaster. It will be the third year using the Quantum combo this spring
I have 2 Shimano reels bought in1988 and 1 new Lew's Mach 1, and 1 new Diawa Tatula TWS. The Shimanos still work perfectly and I prefer them over the new ones. They truly last forever!

Depending if it's saltwater wading I like longer rods 7' - 7'-6" MH, casting & spinning but when comes throwing topwater broken backs or jumpin minnows 6' - 6'-6" MH to broomstick! Yaking longer than 6'-6" rods are a pain in the ass! Unless it's a a spinning rod setup! Then I'll fish up to a 8'-6" M-MH with 6-10 lbs mono with a 6' floulcarbon leader 15-20 lbs or twice the main line lbs. The lighter line always longer cast and the extra long spinning rod allows to get the fish from running under the yak while fighting and less resistance to the fish! Freshwater bass fishing on a boat really anything goes! But I'm not fishing with 10 rod or reels combo's on my deck! Windy day? a casting & spinning setup, strong winds 2 spinning rod combo's, no wind then 2 casting rod combo's 6'-6" and a 7' or longer. But growing up when casting reels of 4:1 were greased lighting the quality of the rod was the key! And provided the lure speed and movement no matter how fast you cranked! More Rod tension was key! More the lure moved faster and deeper, less the slowed and floated towards the surface, I grew up fishing my step father's Mitchell 300 on a Shakespeare 6' rod when I could sneak it out of the house! Otherwise it canepoles with 7' of black braid and 2'-3' of clear mono 2 spilt shots and a gold Aberdeen No# 4 hook, minnows if you had a sineing net or night crawlers, or if you were brave enough bust into the old man's tackle box, brakeout 1/8 -1/4 oz mirrrolure green/gold w/white belly or a Heddon Sonic and cutoff the hook remove the split shots and tie on the lures with the best knot you knew! Because if broke off on a stick up or got hung up in willow braches? While you were jigger poling along the river bank? You were swimming clothes on or off to get that lure! And if a fish did hit it and broke it off! You were screwed unless you were Aquaman! Because sure enough the old man would want go fishing after you lost his lure and would notice it missing! Even though he hadn't open his my Buddy tackle box in months, with the plastic trays that the cream rubber worms always melted them and lures that place next to them discolored and or melted them too! It was your ass! My Grandfather owed the Kickapoo Lodge on Indian Lake in Dowagiac Michigan and Heddon Lure Company was based downtown in Dowagiac with the exception of Rapala and the Johnson Minnow, James Heddon made or invented just about everything else! The lure technology has changed very little compared to the rods, reels and line technology! It still comes down to knowing the water and the fish your fishing for and the weather! Blue Birds and high pressure no wanna por caca! Overcast and cloudy low pressure happy happy! TMI! You don't need 40 poles or 100 reels! Even though I have 100's of rods and reels, two boats salt/freshwater, BOAT= bust out another thousand! And a yak! At 68 my favorite fishing here in Houston is using a 4' 6" kids Gandermoutain casting rod w/ shimano 51 and a 4' 6" spinning rod w/ Penn SS 4200 4 -6 lbs nanofill with 10 lbs floulcarbon leader fishing lures that might be older than me? And catching 3/4 - 4 lbs monsters out these 20' wide & 4' deep bayous that everybody just drives by everyday and looks out their windows seeing an old man stumbling up and down the banks trying to catch fish in those nasty waters! For a quick CPR! I enjoy your videos especially the on the way you fish your plastic shad tails! I've always fished 1/8 - 1/4 oz jig&pigs like that with the brush guard trimmed close to the hook! In river systems using a plastic shad makes sense to me! And the fact you were spanking them! kicked ass! Need to take a hit! I mean my meds now!! Be cool, Sinn Fein Byrne

Thanks Nathan I appreciate your thoughts on combos. This certainly felt like a comfortable price point for me. I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on a good all round spinning outfit as well. I'll have to search your site for videos on line selection. I fish mainly clear rocky shallow water in Lake Huron for smallmouth and I always thought braid was the go to line with fluorocarbon or mono leaders. I'm too cheap to be stripping good line to put on something else for just a short while.

Only reason pros have multiple combos is so they don’t have to tie on lures all day! I think 8 combos is more than enough if you are on the yak and like you said 2-3 if you are bank beating
Absolutely! I fish with plenty of combos myself

Rather than buying a new rod, I'm thinking about using an old Gary Loomis crankbait rod. 7' medium heavy for throwing chatterbaits. What do you think?

There isn't a better rod on the market for the money than the Fury series , not sure if you tried the Dobyns Maverick reel but bought one just to try it out and so far I can't find a negative , smooth, can cast pretty far and the drag handles big fish, the jury is out on durability , as far as line I have found a sweet spot at the #14 Sunline Sniper FC in the waters I fish , been fishing it at Chickamauga, some buddies have said I'm living on the edge but so far so good lol

Concerning the longer rods. You can cast farther with them if you use both arms. Problem is, On longer rods the reels are moved towards the fwd end of the rod which shortens the rod length in front of the reel. The extra length adds weight and the extra rod butt gets in the way and the awkwardness of the whole thing prevents accuracy. From a boat, the extra length is good for long casts on schooling fish but the extra size will wear you out quickly.

I believe the Dobyns 734 is a heavy action rod. The medium heavy is the 733….
They are labeled as a heavy but they run kind of light!
I have a lews Mach 1 speed stick 6’10 medium heavy 7.5.1 20lb fluorocarbon and I’m trying to throw it out much farther Is there a setting inside the reel because I am getting a lot of bird nest and I am looking for one more great combo like a DC Currado

Bro. Beening on a kayak taking 8 to 10 rods is the benefit of having whatever setup you’ll need set up at a arms reach !!!!!!!
I'd spend more time getting 10 rods out of my way on my yak then I would tying on a new rig on one of my 4 or 5 rods, but I suppose if I really wanted to take 10, I'd figure out a system for it.
I bet your"yak" has a riptide, a huge battery, gps/sonar and a Yeti cooler. 🤦🏼♂️

Some of the things pro's do kill me, like fishing a glass or composite rod for crankbaits..it's just trying to be too smart, when a fish in cold water barely sucks in the bait, that glass rod is crap!
