Throw Away Your Bootstraps! What does a goalie pad bootstrap do?

  • I had a lot of people asking me how to wear their bootstraps, or if they are even necessary. So I decided to make this video and talk about why I no longer use bootstraps and why I think they aren't needed anymore.
    They can still serve a purpose (which I go over in the video) but I feel for the majority of people you can take them off and your ankles, knees and hips will thank you.

    I personally use mine with my bootstrap loop, I have a 24.5" knee to floor. I edge into 37" territory, so pads like to pop out from under my knee. Using that bootstrap loop stops that. I just do it to help keep my pads in place in an up and downward movement.

    My son has gone through these iterations over the last few years from using both the normal toe ties and the boot strap with his Bauer pads, which is then went through the Lundy loop when he got his True skates. When he got his OPTIK IV pads, he started using the elastic toe strap, and then after reading an article about using no toe ties, he tried it without them and like it even more. So, he finished his U16 year like that and is now playing juniors with that setup. We also added an extra 1/4” pad in the landing zone for better biomechanics and way less strain on the entire leg from the hip to the knee, to the ankle. Pros were using thicker landing pads until the NHL reduced the sizes of pads, including the landing zone, which is unfortunate because it probably contributes a lot to the hip issues goalies are suffering these days. But that’s a topic for a different day! You rock. Great videos!

    Personally I put the boot strap underneath the arch/bridge of my foot, it helps the boot of the pad move with my skate when I am stretching to make a save but it also allows for good foot rotation if you don't have it too tight

    You are totally correct Matt. With the bungie cord toe bridge, I have shed the ankle strap (2 seasons now). I’m in my late 40’s (been playing goal non stop since my early 20’s) and without the ankle strap, it has allowed me way more freedom, flexibility, and less stress on my knees, ankles, and hips. I am able to punch out toe saves more frequently and have more low save coverage so the added mobility is a plus. You nailed it with a better reverse VH performance too. The bungie cord toe bridge is a game changer for us goalies. Congrats on your discovery and sharing this information. It’s a win win for us all. Keep up the good work. 👍🏻

    @HockeyReviews here is my story. im 15 and when I was about 11 I was at a skate, I had leather traditional bootstraps. medium tightness. One rippepd off during the skate. It was horrible. My leg felt weird and very sloppy and I have been scared to try without a bootstrap since. Also wouldn't hurt to mention I don't usually like change in the pads, Only time I have changed the strapping on my pad is when I got my first new pair of pads, which have a smart bootstrap (brains) Any thoughts? This intrigues me But I don't want to take off my bootstrap and hate it

      My Vaugns have removable straps so I just pulled the strap to try it. if I didn't like it I could always add it back in. You could just roll the strap up and secure it to try it if your pads don't have removable straps. I now have no straps on my pads and use the newer strapping system that I sewed in myself. I won't ever go back to a boot strap!

What would you recommend (CCM pads), to apply the velcro at the knee block behind the knee or apply it to the calf option? I currently use knee but want to try calf however in beer league we dont have practices which makes trying new things hard.

  • @LucasCrossleyGuitar
    @LucasCrossleyGuitar 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    My son just moved from Warrior G4 to Vaughan Ventus. We had to switch back to traditional laces for the toe ties. The bungee was tight enough that the toe of his skate could not touch the ice when he needed to push. Traditional laces fixed they but they are a pain in the but for a U12 tendy. I have some other bungees but they have to be tight enough that he won’t step on them. Any thoughts on other things we could try? We tried toe ties a few years ago and I found them too tight as well. They hold the toe of the skate too close to the pad.

    • @HockeyReviews
      @HockeyReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So, ideally the bungees aren't extremely tight and are easy to connect when you are looping through the skate. Was there an ability to loosen them so they wouldn't be basically constantly pulling his toe towards the pad?
      You want them to pull when the goalie moves from butterfly to no butterfly. But they shouldn't constantly be putting force on the toe.
      For different bungee setups I would have to put the bungee through the first hole in the skate and then the middle hole. Then others I would just do the middle hole.

    • @LucasCrossleyGuitar
      @LucasCrossleyGuitar 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HockeyReviews Thanks for your reply. Yes there's a way to lengthen or shorten the bungee. I tried different things through the skate cowling. If I set it so he had full mobility with his feet then it seemed like it would be so loose that he would be stepping on it. We had a game and a practice so I didn't want to risk that. I had read about another person complaining about stepping on them so I thought it wasn't worth the risk. What I like about traditional Toe ties is that I can use a knot to set the length such that he has full mobility and then I can tie that tight to his skate so there's no chance he could step on it. It kinda makes me wonder if we need them at all. We used to wear them the same way on his CCM flex pads when he had those. Anyhow I appreciate your insight. Maybe when we get some free ice we can play around a bit.

    • @HockeyReviews
      @HockeyReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Now in my sweet 1x pads which are Medium, I use Pro laces through the 1st hole on holders and no boot strap. l
