Would recommend taking the main boom all the way out. Check for any cracks - crack test. And double check all hydraulic lines. And lift cables. Because that could be the biggest drama on a job
Check twice. Safe and sound. Gease the cables less chance of rust. 👍
Glad to see your taking this serious and going through the truck to make sure everything is working and safe and also going to towing school. Your not just throwing lipstick on a pig and calling yourself a tow truck operator like someone else down there. Best of luck!
Of course he is lol it's not his truck nore his money paying for anything lol.sounds like your jealous because Tim can tow without having to go to school.
Rotators are like cranes, not everyone can jump in and go without some schooling. Gentry don't mention the rotator lately, wander if this one was it?
@ky.gambler5281 sure they can just because you can't doesn't mean others cant.
you’re
x2
It has to be certified by the dot if you plan on doing wrecks/calls for the state
TH-cam channel “Ron Pratt” with Midwest truck has a similar rotator and when they set the brake it lifts the axle.
1150R
Ron’s rotator is awesome since he has the 1150r which means that the boom can roll toward the back or front. He also has the raptor controller meaning that he uses joysticks to control the boom and it is NOT the same as the control system on this 1150. Murphy’s diesel does have the same control system so it may be better to learn from them and their 1075! Good luck
i was going to say the same thing i doubt he would have any problems answering your questions this is his channel youtube.com/@ronpratt?si=8mjej2jRnoAephqT
Thanks for putting on the mics. Makes all the difference.
I'm a disabled retired OTR driver watching yours and Tim's channel really makes me miss Trucking.
Me too! It was the worst job I ever loved!🤣
Me too,but drivers use to stop n help each other if they seen on the side of the road, today you watch out t n ey dont run you over....n the eletronic log is when hung up the keys n moved to florida...now I just enjoy watching these guys killing it on here..
Corn dogs and piss jugs
That tire ware is called chipping . It happens when there is a 5 lbs difference between the two .
EGR Cooler at 100,000 not uncommon. Any Warranty is worth a call to Cummins
That egr cooler looked like mostly moisture which is pretty common. Id block test it to check for combustion gas in the cooling system. You can also test the egr cooler itself. On the lift axle sometimes theyre programed to only drop when the brake is released.
I know that's true for when its cold but if that thing is still as hot as they made it sound like it should be pretty damn dry. I don't do x15's but I see techs get confused about moisture a lot with the 6.7
Also, if the truck is parked with the parking brake on the lift axle will not go down push the parking brake in chalk, the wheels adjust your air valve and it’ll go down
Pull out on the white knob beside the switch for the lift axle and twist it to apply air pressure to the lift axle.
For the safety lights, I'd highly recommend using Whelen and running the system using Whelen Core. It is a bit on the pricy side but the amount of features you get out of it is phenomenal. Not to mention using the best lights on the market. The price is very well worth it.
There is a hose on the inside of the frame rail next to the turbo that leaks on all Cummins. It’s a cold water leak. Tighten the clamps and it will fix it.
Those are federal signal led lights they just rotate u need to have the lenses wet sanded. Those lights are great lights definitely keep them. Also my lift axle on my truck only comes down when the parking break is pushed in it goes up when you put the parking brake on or put it in reverse. Also the crane has to be certified yearly. I have a knuckle boom on my truck and I have my knuckle boom cert. which is good for 5 years. Also my boom gets certified yearly. And they do a total service on it every year also.
Ron Pratt should come over and tell you everything you need on that wrecker and he is awesome with his wrecker
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I watch his videos but he's not very great at running his Rotator the boys over in California at Papa's Towing can run circles around Ron
@@RINEYMOTORSPORTS you meant Pepe's towing?
@@RINEYMOTORSPORTS while Ron may not be a speed demon doing recoveries he is probably one of the safest and safety conscious operators I’ve seen on TH-cam. There’s a lot of value in that alone not to mention what he can do with that truck. Not taking anything from the western operators because they’re good too. youtube.com/@RonPratt?si=8SOdcUvC3PQdqH3o
@@RINEYMOTORSPORTSPepe’s is goated. Those boys know wassup cuz they got big contracts every day.
Those Egr coolers are fairly common. Sometimes though there is just condensation that is in the pipes of the truck has not been running long
That space up top was more then likely had a spreader bar rack mounted there by previous owner.
Looks like the previous owner stripped everything out of it except for the spreader bars and a few other items.
Did you figure out lift axle? It won't drop when brakes are set. Or if it's down when you set brakes it will lift it. That's what our mini wheeler does.
Ive seen moisture in the egr systems many times, its not always coolant. Also your vgt is cycling because the sensors aren't getting a good reading. Before you drop money on an egr cooler, id tell you to try something much cheaper. Clean as much moisture out of there as possible, and then clean any sensors that could be affected by the moisture. Specifically the egr temp sensor, egt sensor, egr differential pressure sensor, egr orifice, and map sensor. Once you do that, the vgt will stop cycling like that. Then you could also run the truck for a bit more and re check to see if it is indeed the cooler
I’ll try that for sure! The truck has lots of hours of running at 1500 rpm so it may not be loading up enough to truly burn off all of the soot
@Bruce_Wilson - I don't know about your truck, but the newer Scanias don’t use EGR.
Hey Tim check with Jim McMichael truck painting in knoxville they paint trucks and have painted a number of big wreckers for different companies around knoxville and they do great work
They mounted the spreader bars there
I think from what I was told by tire technicians I've talked to that random ware is alignment issues. And the cummins I've ran all had a plug by the turbo on the manifold was leaking
Love the jetsons effect on the hoverboard. Nice work Ryan.
Whaha, yeah, it was hilarious😂😂
The previous owner most like had spreader bars mounted between the back of the cab and the boom. Something else you need to add to your list of supplies to outfit the truck.
he had nrc spreader bars on top, have pics before they got it.
Probably the spreader bar was mounted there seen a couple tators that have them mounted there as well as Ron Pratts
Hey I used to run a big wrecker, as far as your brakes being spungy we had to get a trair gled hand and put it on the trailer service on the back of truck to release the trailer the red valve in the cab try that while driving it
Had a 379 that did that also, hardly any brakes unless the trailer brake button was in..weird huh?
I'd suggest you guys get metal plates for the Rotator, We use them on our 110 foot fire truck they would help greatly when you come to a soft service or even when you don't want to mess up the ground you are using the rotor leveling system.
The composite outrigger pads are the way to go, they are much lighter and capable of higher loads.
I had a kw straight truck that would only put the tag axle down when the parking brake was off and it would pick it up put in reverse so maybe try releasing the brakes and see if it works then
Get in touch with Crouch's wrecker. Sales and parts in Kingston springs Tennessee they have everything you need to outfit that truck
Your voice is very clear, thank you for investing the Bluetooth Mic’s. For all your issues on the truck, please call Ron Pratt At Midwest Truck Shop in MI.
Watching from Calgary, Canada
It's in missouri not Michigan
I apologize, I am from Canada. Thank you for the correction
I understand no problem
Try to remember to put it gear when engaging and disengaging the PTO. Need to stop all movement in transmission.
hi bruce good video keep them coming.
Spreader bars where mounted on top deck.
That flaking paint is a surface adhesion problem. You need to prep the surface with 240 grit sandpaper to give the paint something to stick to.
Best advice is watch a couple of episodes of "Highway Through Hell".. Jamie Davies #1 wrecker driver/owner
Your truck ADD is off the charts haha. I love to see it as I'm the same way
I'm laughing at the repetitive comments 😂 You've the mud flaps from Eastern, they should be helpful for the information you need on the specs. Equipment wise, any distributor will be more than happy to hear from you to fill up your tool boxes. 😂 Pepe's in California is very happy with their Baileys towing Equipment and they're right there in Tennessee.
Speaking as a happily retired Operator, I would caution you to realize that you're a rook in the business. Hire experienced operators for your future business opportunities. Mountains weren't built in days, it takes years. Always Keep your head on a swivel and please be aware that there have already been 9 operators killed by those who don't pay attention and don't Slow down and Move over.
We have the exact same truck at our Tow company. I noticed during several recoveries. I kept smelling an antifreeze smell. When I would get on the bed next to the stacks, I could smell the antifreeze. So after doing some tests unfortunately, we had to do a complete in frame. The truck drove and ran perfect, but would lose just a little bit of water, just like your case. I should also mention we also had water from the EGR cooler. So we change that first hoping that was the issue. But unfortunately, it had two major issues. I certainly don’t envy you if that’s what it is. But it certainly has exact same symptoms that our truck had. Ron with Stanislaus Towing
Fitzgerald is a jerr-dan dealer love all 4 of my Fitzgerald glider wrecker
Love that new Rotator, & seeing this new chapter for you & the crew.
The things mounted on top of the front boxes was probably a spreader bar.
Rob seems like a great guy to work with but Bruce good group of guys Fitzgerald's Collision 2024😊
That white scania would do really well with that miller DTU with the uprated axles on it especially if you get that 730 in it and the uprated clutch
Would actually be a great idea or a full Scania Rotator. That would bring in the views seeing that in action in the US.
This will be an interesting new chapter for Bruce & Co. I am happy for you.
Usually to engage to lift axle the key has to be on and transmission has to be in neutral
The 22 T880 with the x15 I drive was eating coolant like crazy and a new EGR (so far) fixed it. It was at 130k miles. Sitting at 161k currently. Several of our T880 with the same motor have all had to get EGRs to fix the coolant eating issue. Not saying that’s what happening to yalls but just something we’ve been through with that motor.
Repower it with C15 no more issue
The EGR valve could be sticking or the EGR cooler could be worn out plus those Cummins engines have a problem with using Def fluid in them
Don’t forget to replace the rear main seal since you are replacing the clutch ones
With your white board list .
How about you get the exact costings of everything.
Then you may realise that some things are needed and many things are just Wants to really required.
It worries me that the rig hasn't earnt a dime yet but you are spending its potential earnings before you even get them .
I think that you are in for a shock at wrecker school, and i would think that Miller has a serious maintenance schedule that needs to be followed.
Murphy's Diesel,Rick is a guy who would tell you straight up about the no glory parts of Wrecker Business.
Ron is too nice to be objective if he thought that you are going in unprepared, but given time he probably could teach the industry hopefuls.
Lets hope that you keep a level head get the Rig sorted mechanical wise and get it close to attempting ro earn its way .
Lets hope your channel becomes consistent,on a level plane and good quality content is made
LIFT AXLE
Hey Bruce, often times with what i’ve seen or with what I’m aware of with many of the Peterbilts and Kenworths (2015+2020+) has a lift axle switch/ pusher axle switch which must be engaged first from inside the cab before the dial and switches from outside the cab can be used, and yes ofc obviously best to do it with the truck running
When you showed this truck in the first video where you collected it and said you smelt coolant I knew it had issues as I used to own a radiator repair shop plus i know a lot about about Cat and Cummins engines.
Blown head gasket not good but do get the top tank taken off the radiator also and cleaned out the tubes.
Replace the coolant after the engine repair with enough antifreeze to make it 60% anti freeze anti boil. It will very soon be at 50% within a day.
If its got a Horton Fan clutch make sure its working properly, also check that the temp sender is showing the correct temp in the cabin, buy a coolant temp gauge to check by inserting it in the recovery bottle after the engine has been running for at least an hour.
Also ensure you replace the thermostat NO MATTER WHAT anyone tells you.
It quite often takes a few cycles to get the new thermostat to work correctly.
To get the temperature up to working temperature blank off the front of the radiator to close airflow, you can use a large piece of cardboard.
Keep up the great work Bruce
Suggestion, Telescopic flood Lighting for the Rotators.
So I’m guessing that like many of the rotators that what used to be mounted on top was a Will-Burt light tower but was probably removed due to issues with the light tower and being so expensive to fix. We actually just removed one from a truck at the Fire Dept I volunteer at because it was just as cheap to replace the tower as it was to fix it.
Didn't think I would be very interested in this with the US trucks but this wrecker content is really interesting! :-)
PS, nice shirt! 😀
Would really like to see the separate miller unit on a Scania, would be awesome with a Scania wrecker!
You should look for Swedish extra lights and work lights. Even the orange warning light we have here are nice
Zake lift makes one with a boom pretty nice there is a guy on TH-cam named Casey that runs the newer zake lift and it's bad ass
I don't know if you're aware but miller the company who built and installed the tow/rotator body is apx 90 min from you guys
Corredt
They are local to me, and should be easy/helpful with any questions.
@@bigb7157 same
I’m still blown away by the shop lol what a killer spot man enjoy!
At my work we have kenworth and the tag won’t drop with out the park brake being released
Push the park break in that might fix your lift axle problem
With the steer tire on finding the dates, if you can’t find it on the outside it’s going to be on the inside or otherside with the week and year for example: 3423 with a circle around it.
The lift axle only works with the breaks released. Release breaks flip switch down. That’s a DOT thing they don’t want you fooling with it going down the road. My new 2023 is back inside the truck
some states the switch must be mounted outside the cab
hey bruce not sure how many comments you actually look thru but i have the whole shebang of the EGR systems and the factory turbi that came off of one of my trucks we had for other reasons of course but the factory turbo is about 7,000 dollars back a year or 2 ago... not sure if the orices have went down on parts or anything but i can put my hands on everything and can possibly make you a good deal on them i know its used stuff but there was nothing wrong with the parts we took off we had other issues come about... if you would like pictures or to know what we have just as spares incase something happens maybe we can get in contact with each other and figure something out i live in alabama so possibly just a couple hours away if you are intersted but like i said not sure how often you look at comments or anything.... nice looking wrecker hope everything works out on your new journey with the recovery thing
You tire wear is normal for any crane truck. I ran service truck and always was swapping tires side to side and inside to out every other oil change to stop the cupping or cutting
Bruce contact Ron Pratt, you know.
I think it's the same pretty heavy all tow.Truck it has to be certified by the state that you're in
The lift axle should come down with the brakes off. The switch should just keep it from dropping when releasing the brakes I believe. But the tater where I work the drop axle is set to the parking brakes and raises when in reverse.
You should be able to ask you local DMV, as well as Century who is the maker all your questions, specially about the crane inspection and wenches.
@interestin9720 - Wenches??!! Jeeze, where can I get a job inspecting them??!!🤣🤣🤣(Just fooling with you. I know it was just ta ypo.)
Had same problem with an 07 kw t800 isx 475 egr cooler leaking and burning coolant, deleted all egr now its like a new truck🤙🇨🇦
I had a 2016 just like that it was a 1150R (Roller) it weighed 72.600. It that 23k on a 20k steer riding with the pusher up. It’s a steerable pusher so I ran it all the time and I could get the steer to 18. Yes tell Robert it’s what they call a Solo Clutch
I'll love seeing more of the rotator yeahh definitely love to see more of the rotator
Up top behind the rotator thats were the spreader bars used to go
The platform between the cab and the boom is for spreader bar tubes 20:56
Making a list and checking it twice.
I'm very interested
Date code is on the inside of steers most likely . EVERY tire has them.
great opportunity bruce! hope you still have time left for the scania greetz from Holland
Hi Bruce
There is a guy on TH-cam, you may know of him Casey LaDelle that has a wrecker service and also recently bought a Zack lift for his truck and seems to work great. He also has a video how to remove it and put it back on his truck. He may be someone that could give y’all some advice on these types of wrecker DTU attachment.
Watching Casey LaDelle looks like the axle chains are a must for towing the trucks backwards.
yeah it’s definitely time for a new clutch
you can check with miller and see and they can certified it and the lights can be done there
Careful Bruce. Power probes can be pretty dangerous if you don't fully understand the circuit. Especially on vehicles with solid state controls that are inside the modules. Messing around applying power to things you don't 100% know what it is, is a recipe for buying a new computer. If you know what you are doing, the power probe (even the old power probe III) can be great diagnostic tools.
Bruce. I like your new content. Way better than the Scana bs
Better than a Scania!! Lol!! 100000 miles and there is a coolant issue, spungy brakes, uneven worn tires, clutch issues, worn out bushings and lots of problems. Lol!! White American crap.
Tire cupping, I know the main focus is like mismatched tires, shocks, and alignment🥵
Hi Bruce love the wrecker behind the cab up top of the box those holes are most likely where the spreader bars where stored also check with zip towing they may be able to help with your towing lights also Ihave to tell you to ask the owner about all the chains binder straps also on the front passenger side tool box there should be a chain chart with different chain sizes and load limits
The uneven wear on tires, are most likely related to bad shocks. Had the same way on a front axle where I got a new shocks and new tires and had no similar issues since
Air hose reel roller guides need rotating, or flipping over. I also recommend putting balance rings on all wheels, i run atlas balance rings on my trucks.
Check to see if there is a switch to raise the lift axle automatically when you switch into reverse. It could be a short in the switch or wiring.
So crazy, you brought your boys with u on the move.
Lake, youre a badass
Ryan, your a noob but we love you
Jamie Davis had a rotator that had a light tower that helps heaps for seeing down the side of a hill or lighting up an area your working in
When you disengage the park break and its engaged it should drop the axle and should go up again when you engage the park break again and when you but it in reverse.
Seems odd, I’ll give that. A try
It looks like a steering drop axe it should work with the park break off hopefully
Key to this Operation Don't run out of Money 😂😂😂
You got to start the truck the truck just got to be started I work at Miller industries
Plaza towing is a great channel, sure they could learn you a thing or two
Nice looking Cummins build you got there at the end of the video!
As far as I know there is no required crane certification for actual towing uses, If you were to go work on a jobsite with it to assist lifting hvac units or something like that then you may very well be required to abide by a lot of crane regulations through osha.
As for the drop axle, i presume there is an air solenoid somewhere that controls air flow to the bags, You need to trace power back to that switch first and make sure it's actually getting power as regardless of how the lift axle actuates if the switch isnt receiving power it isn't going to work, trace that to the source and get power to the switch then work from there.
“When used in response to a wrecked or disabled motor vehicle, tow trucks and rotators are exempted from the regulations and operator certification requirements of cranes”
Pulled from google but definitely check with your local state!
I would just give the black Dodge away in a giveaway fix it up and give it away
Clean egr, replace differential psi sensor and clean ports, replace imap and exhaust back psi sensor make sure the tube to the manifold is not restricted probably why your vgt is hunting, there can be condensation in the tube and not necessarily antifreeze usally if it’s really leaking it will wash the carbon off completely you could bench check it, also make sure you flat edge manifold before going back together, also cheater won’t come down unless brakes are released, also the vavle is common on them as well
I was recently watching a episode of Doc Martin and saw a SCANIA fire truck.
There are Scania firetrucks all over the world. Scania delivered the first firetruck in 1919. There are lots of different Scania trucks. Army offroad trucks like the Scania Gryphus, Scania Tgb40, firetrucks and all kinds of trucks.
