  • In this video I test set up to do some engraving with my DIY CNC machine. I show my process including the CAD/CAM setup in Fusion360.

I'm really happy with how these turned out! I'm going to keep playing around with the engravings, because they are really fun and simple to set up. I also want to try out a great tip of using my wd40 in the process and I have bought some polishing compound to try with my buffing wheel!

Wouldn't it make more sense to just make the wood template the exact size of the dog tag? This way you wouldn't even need to tape or glue anything to hold them in place. You would just have to drop them into the tag-shaped hole. No? And every tag would always be in the exact same place and perfectly aligned.

Yeah, that’s a great point, I’ve basically ended up with a setup like that since this version of it. It’s a little tricky because the vibrations can still shake them loose so the fit is important and the softer wood causes the slot to loosen over time.

Engraving metal was never my favorite with my tabletop CNC but I did figure out a few things that made it less of a pain. One thing I did was mill out a pocket to press the part into, with a little "tab" on the edge so I could pry the piece up afterward. The pocket would be sized just right so the piece would press-fit down into it, no adhesive or clamping required. I also had really good luck with using tiny ballnose cutters, 1/16" usually, which makes nicer/cleaner lines than an engraving bit (ironically). I'd also gone smaller too, such as 3/64" (halfway between 1/32" and 1/16") which wasn't bad too. I broke two of my 1/32" bits though, they were just too fragile. Also, a drop of machine oil on the surface of the part goes a long way. Keep it up!

Nice! Might grab some ball nose endmills for a fry

Hi there, it’s one of my own design built from scratch, if you check out my channel, I have a playlist of the whole process of making it
