- Record Of Lodoss War: Chronicles Of The Heroic Knight - A Free Knight... (Episode 1)
Record of Lodoss War is a franchise of fantasy novels by Ryo Mizuno based around the work he originally created for a world called Forcelia for role-playing games (RPGs). There have since been multiple manga, anime and computer game adaptations, several of which have been translated into English. The plots generally follow the conventions and structure of the RPG systems including Dungeons & Dragons and Sword World RPG, being based around a party of several characters of distinct types undertaking a specific quest. Record of Lodoss War was created in 1986 by Group SNE as a Dungeons & Dragons "replay" serialized in the Japanese magazine Comptiq. Replays are not novels, but transcripts of RPG sessions, meant to both hold the interest of readers and convey the events that took place. They have proven to be popular, even to those who do not play role-playing games but are fans of fiction (including fantasy fiction). Similar to light novels, many characters and parties in replays have become popular as characters of anime. An example of such a character is the female elf Deedlit in Record of Lodoss War, who was played by science fiction novelist Hiroshi Yamamoto during the RPG sessions. The popularity of the Record of Lodoss War replays was such that the Dungeon Master Ryo Mizuno started to adapt the story into some of the earliest Japanese-language domestic high fantasy novels in 1988. When the replay series went on to become a trilogy, Group SNE had to abandon the Dungeons & Dragons rules and create their own game, dubbed Record of Lodoss War Companion and released in 1989. All three parts of the replay series were eventually published as paperbacks by Kadokawa Shoten from 1989 to 1991:

Hand drawn, completely animated in Japan by homegrown Japanese artists (no Korean, Thai or Chinese outsourcing), emotionally deep 80s music by their top artists....Anime' in its purest most beautiful form. The English voice acting still had a ways to go but the Japanese voices have never been better. Even still...the goofiness and over-the-topness of the English voices had a charm all their own.
It takes me back to the early-mid 90s when I knew what anime was but there was just flat out zero barrier of entry for it in the Southern US for an elementary school kid to get into. I was always so fascinated by the art that I saw in game magazines...but you couldn't get into it outside of a few JRPGs like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest or Phantasy Star.
80s? lol this came out in the early 90s, after the OAV. And the English VAs did a pretty good job.

I was aware of this anime back in the late 90's thanks to the internet, but I never got to watch it because the only source for anime I had was cartoon network...
Moms wasn't about to go out and find some obscure japanese cartoon for me and buy it. but now thanks to the internet, I CAN WATCH WHATEVER I WANT! =D

I'm having a 90s anime Renaissance and I wonder if this fantasy swords-and-sorcery will be any good. This looks interesting since I like this swords-and-sorcery vibe and more 90s goodness. This may be a 90s anime with rather weird voice acting (but not bad), but I still like it.
And I find it strange hearing Lisa Ortiz as Deedlit in a more gentle tone as I know her and been used to hearing her as the loud Lina Inverse from Slayers. Still this is an interesting role for her.

1st time i did know about that bande dessiné, was back at 99'. I was still a teenager to that time. It was showed here in Brazil by means of tabletop AD&D adaptation, offered inside a magazine. the mangá/anime itself, I was having the chance to watch today for the first time. ☺️

Also the reason for 9-13 being unrelated to the plot is due to the fact that the production company's budget ran out, so they couldn't use the official canon story. they were forced to make up the ending, which in my opinion was a very good ending...

Record of Lodoss franchise is based off novels and books that are pen&paper d20 rpg like dungeon&dragons. Its a real shame they dont make anime like this anymore.

Does anyone like me want a Record of Loddess War video game series to come to PS5? I would have it be an ARPG like the Final Fantasy VII Remake mixed with Witcher series, Devil May Cry, and Dark Souls. Dark Souls and Witcher for environment, atmosphere, and world building. Final Fantasy VII Remake and Devil May Cry for gameplay.

From Lodoss we were then granted the island Vvanderfell and specifically the province of Morrowind. The anime inspired the best RPG to have ever been made. I'm here for it.

No, the Chronicles of the Heroic Knight dub was done by a then new dubbing studio called Headline Sound. I've always found it very odd that even though the OVA dub of LODOSS WAR remains one of my favorites to listen to (it's not perfect, but it's not bad at all), the TV dub fairs even weaker, even though many of the VAs from the OVA reprise their roles. Then I learned that the reason was that Headline was inexperienced and still testing the waters. So I cut them slack.

I was told there were two variations to this anime. Has anyone heard anything like this, and could they tell me the name of the other? Which one do you prefer?
There was a series before CHK, if you search Record of Lodoss War OVA you'll find it. It follows a similar story to this series, and includes many of the same characters. I love this series, the music especially, but I think on the whole I preferred the OVA series as it mainly focuses on Parn and the original characters you see in the first few episodes of this version, and I just like them more than the later characters.

I personally thought the CHRONICLES dub's quality shot up greatly when Crispin Freeman as Spark showed up; he really gave a lot of much needed life to what could have been a stale counterpart of Parn. Not that there aren't any other good VAs; I liked Deedlit, Ryna, Leaf, and most of the returning VAs, but I wasn't so thrilled with the extras OR some of the other new characters.
Looks like they just did the war,save the preistess, and did the 5 years later thing... This is sooo different _ (Just finished watching the Lodoss OVA)

I knew that there was a sequel series called Crystania, but I didn't know that there was a more kid-friendly version of Loddoss. I don't know how kid friendly this will be, but I can tell you no one went chibi for a segment and there was no nudity.
But I'll also say that it was strange to see Ashram be so respectful to a priestess after finding out she wasn't useful. That was refreshing, honestly.

RAPEE APE, the VAing for CHRONICLES OF THE HEROIC KNIGHT is nowhere nearly as good as the LODOSS OVA, but on the other hand, I've heard much worse. I do understand where Parn's VA was coming from with the decision to make him sound older, but I honestly thought he did a much better job in the OVA. It took about eight episodes into the TV series that I finally got accustomed to older Parn, but then again I spotted the occasional missed line. Lisa Ortiz, Al Muscari, Simone Grant, Karen Smith, Angora Deb, and Crispin Freeman all turn in very fine performances as Deedlit, Slayn, Leylia, Shiris, Leaf/Marfa, and Spark/Garrack/Marr, respectively. John Knox is also in fine form as Ashram, as is Meg Frances as Ryna (although I liked her Pirotess better in the OVA). Greg Wolfe is also great as Greevus, as is Oliver Gregory as Orson. Most of the other characters sound either average and/or mediocre. It's only the minor side characters (notably Ashram's minions, the Dragons, and Prince Reona as well as Rabido) that truly have the most grating voices. Cecil and Hobb aren't that great either. So I personally would say that LODOSS TV's dub is all over the place in quality. For the good performances it has, I do give it points, but otherwise I like the OVA dub better.
Is this after the events of the OVA or a retelling of the same story?
I thought Shiris/Orson and the rest of the gang knew each other. Shiris and Orson came along after the episode where Ghim was killed.
What am I missing?
The OAV super-condenses the actual story of Lodoss War. The TV series follows the story more closely and picks up some time after the death of the dwarf Ghim and disappearance of Woodchuck the thief.
