This makes so much sense and is so helpful. I have two cats - one is 13 and the other is 4 (both are rescues). For awhile we lived in an apartment that felt a bit cramped. We noticed that one of the cats was peeing outside of the litter box. We were worried it was our older cat and she might be having some health issues, so we had planned a trip to the vet. Before our vet appointment though I had caught our younger cat in the act and then scheduled for him to get looked at instead. The vet commented how everything seemed fine and that our little guy might just be over stimulated or anxious about something. They asked how I kept the litter box and I admitted that I’d clean it every other day (we had two litter boxes - one for each cat). The vet said that was more than enough so it likely was anxiety related. Anyways I went to cleaning the litter twice a day just to be safe (figured that maybe it wasn’t to his standards in cleanliness and maybe that was making him anxious). I however found him still peeing outside the box. So sadly we just dealt with it. The vet recommended some products for us but nothing seemed to work. A month ago my fiancé and I had finally saved up to afford a bigger, nicer apartment. We’ve been here for a month now and have only seen one accident. On move in day the little guy was very stressed out and he peed on the bathroom floor - understandable since moving is stressful and you can’t really communicate that to a cat. He was a bit shyer than usual the following days, but he’s come out of his shell a lot and seems much happier. He’s investigated all the new spaces and seems much happier here - rolling around, playing more, cuddling more, and best of all using the litter box properly. I hadn’t realized how much space or lack of space truly affects their behavior and mental state. It makes so much sense though when you think about it. If you were stuck in a cramped box for days you’d get sick and tired of it, possibly even have a meltdown if you have a fear of small space. However on the other hand too much space can make you feel vulnerable and like you don’t have anywhere to hide/any safe spaces. This video was so helpful and thank you for helping me realize the reason my cat was having such bad anxiety

There's other reasons for going out of their box,. The VET should of told you!!!! It could be kidneys. UTI, UTO --- which my male cat died of!!! Have him see other VET , or pet behavior tech !!! Yes , they insist on clean litter area!!! I thought everyone knew that,. I have to check my baby's box 2-3 times a day !!! she has had slip ups , but we live in small apt. And l.need to get more stuff to my storage area and DONATIONS to a thrift shop , shelter place for people or church doing a rummage sale !!! PAY it forward!!!! 🙀😼😻😹

@@helaberger4018 I’m sorry for you and to hear about your cat. The vet did tests to make sure it wasn’t a kidney issue, UTI, and several other things, so the only thing they could come up with was anxiety. I do clean the litter daily so that wasn’t the problem either

I am so happy I came across this video! It looks like I will be moving from a 2br into a studio with my 2 cats and I was worried that they would be unhappy. But, what you are saying makes sense. Cats do like to hid in boxes and such so maybe they will be even happier in a smaller space than a bigger one. I hadn't thought of it that way. Im just so happy that it looks like i have found a new place and i'll be able keep my kitty babies! (Well, okay a 2 year old and a 3 year old lol.) It is icing on the cake that perhaps they will be even happier than they are now!

Once he's had a warm nap and socialised for a bit he's off. Only thing that keeps him indoors for prolonged periods is rain or the threat of rain.

My senior kitty needed emergency surgery to remove bladder stones. For recovery they told me to keep him confined to a 6x6 foot area for 2 weeks. I put him in the master suite, probably 20x20. He had the cone of shame! He was a good sport for about 11 days. He removed his cone and started ruling the house again.

After my girl got her cone off she attacked it. Dragged it around biting it and smacking it. Wonder why they made her wear cone and not her daughter or any of her six sons? She was almost 3 when she had surgery and they told me it was mandatory. With her daughter and sons they said they didn’t need it.

We live in a little apartment but my cat loves it he loves the living room because there’s a lot of things to climb it has a big window 2 couches and something where he can jump and sleep. He sometimes asks me to go to the balcony I go with him he likes to hear the dogs bark and birds. He loves to be in this hole where his furniture is too. He loves to be in small places though and loves to play with his laser. I figured maybe that why when I take him to the hall he gets scared and wants to go in! Btw my cat is a Bombay cat. If you have just one cat you can live in a little apartment like me but with some toys and furniture or some windows cause let me tell you cats like windows I haven’t seen one cat not liking windows. And he also loves climbing and going into boxes and shopping bags lol I sometimes laugh. I love my Bombay friend way too much. He sleep on top of me sometimes lol.

It's always important (on most every subject/issue) to attempt to put yourself in your cat's position. Once you do that so many things begin to make a bit more sense. We look at tight spaces as cramped. Your cat looks at a tight space as security. At least 9 times out of 10. :-)

I live in a small 3 room apartment and have a skittish and active 6 year old Maine Coon cat. She used to always be up to some kind of shenanigans. Then I got her a 6’ cat tree a few years ago and put it by her window. That stopped the majority of the misbehavior. I don’t bother her when she’s on it, that is her space. I also spend more time playing with her and giving her more affection. She hardly ever misbehaves anymore.

07:50 - I wish my cat would bolt out of the window he uses as his main entry/exit point. He likes to stop in the window and look around for up to a couple of minutes surveying the area. @@SeniorCatWellness Nearly all the "Behaviourists" recommend playing w/ your cat is daily, getting them a variety of toys but only having some out at any one time, as, they love variety. Also get puzzles like a ball track etc. It keeps their little minds sharp& more importantly, busy trying to work out where the robot mouse is going, or the laser "spot" or, which item the treat is in, etc. That keeps them from being bored, & getting into mischief. ( Curiosity is good & bad, & as much part of your cat as the hunting instinct, or in other words, it's part of their DNA. 😊🙄🥰🤭 Good luck , all.
