IMPORTANT EDIT: The ORIGINAL "The Life and Adventures of a Cat" was published in 1760. The 1970 version displayed on screen is a remake of that book. Thank you to those who brought this to our attention and sorry for the error. ❤️

Hey Purring Journal, have you ever seen "Oliver & Company"? It came out in the 80s and the age group of adults that can afford cats and also have pet insurance for them probably coincides with having seen it in childhood. It features a homeless orange kitten named Oliver.

Our male cat is an exception to #4. He never had kittens of his own but when we used to live on the farm, he found three kittens without their mother and he raised them as his own. I had a Ginger male, the Dude, who was highly intelligent and I swore, he was my Yellow Lab reincarnated. He was a character and a real people cat, he also raised two 4 week old kitties to 6 months old when they were adopted by my sister. He LOVED them, and didn't let them out of his sight! Dude, also carried them in his mouth and put them on his "perch" in the window, curled up with them, and slept with them all night. He also taught them to use their litter, as they were so young when I took them to foster that their mother didn't have a chance to teach them. Dude loved his calico and tuxedo cat. He lived to be 17 years old. He was truly one of a kind.

Ivor, I've had cats all my life too; I absolutely adore them and wouldn't be without one. The 'cat of my life', Becky, chose me as her human companion when she was a kitten. She was intelligent, gentle, sweet natured, and a real "little old fashioned lady", but also very determined, sensible and stoical - she had to be as she had some serious health issues for a lot of her life, although she could be a real little tigress if another cat invaded her territory. I had the privilege of her company for nearly 16 years; she was my little soulmate and helped me through some stressful times. I loved her dearly, think of her often, and will miss her forever. I love my current kitty to bits, but Becky was special.

I feel you, brother. I had a runt, likely inbred, that we believe was half Bombay (his sister _really_ looked like it) named Locutus of Cat, nicknamed Booger. That combination gave him the face of a kitten his whole life, and everyone always said he was the cutest cat they'd seen. He was also a character and a half, had several specific games he liked to play with me, and didn't have a single mean bone in his body -- he literally loved everyone, human or animal, he ever met. And even cats that hated every other cat treated him kindly, probably because he looked like a big kitten, but also because he was so docile. He would have befriended a mouse if he'd ever met one. He's been gone nearly 10 years now. We've since lost every cat from that cluster -- ironically, his tiny, grumpy sister lived the longest at 17 years -- and while I miss them all, none hurt as much as much as losing him. He was one of a kind.

I have to disagree with the statement that male cats don't care about kittens. I have had three male cats that took over taking care of their sister's kittens when something happened to the mother. They would bathe the kittens, make sure they were fed, guarded them while they played. I had a coworker that told me that she had a male cat that took over taking care of her female cat's kittens when the mother cat abandoned them. None of these of these male cats were Siamese.

I have also encountered a very loving male cat. I think he is the father of the kitten I took in because he used to care for her and hid her in my back porch and come in the morning and take her with him. I tried to befriend him and the kitten but he was too fearful but the kitten finally warmed up to me as I fed her everytime I saw her in my porch. I then Decided to adopt her so she didn't have to live the difficult life outside. She has been the sweetest she fell in love with my male cat and they became companions until he passed. I also TNR all the cats in my area so the suffering outdoors can stop.

In the 70’s, my mom had an indoor female Siamese cat that was in heat. One day during dinner, she heard a cat outside on the porch. When she opened the door, there was a male Siamese cat. She let him come inside. He went upstairs and the two cats mated. When they were finished, he came back downstairs and she let him out. She didn’t see him again until just after her cat had her kittens. Mom heard the male cat on the porch again. She opened the door, let him in, and he went upstairs and groomed all the kittens. When he was finished, he left and she never saw him again.

My boy cat is a great father to his kittens. When my girl was in labor he would lay with her and groom her, getting up to 'patrol' the area for a minute before rejoining her. After the babies were born he stayed close to the nest (we separated him just in case) but once they were 2 weeks old and mom would leave them for short periods of time, he'd go in and lay with them and groom them. Any time mom was away, Dad was there to watch the babies. And when they were old enough, he played with them, very gently. He is such a good boy. He's a bombay, and the mom is a snowshoe tabby.

@@misaafy he is not trying to "dominate". OK, cats are neither dogs, nor are they teenage boys reading dating advice telling them they have to be ALPHA. They're CATS. What he is trying to do is get rid of competition for prey and space and is going to seriously HURT the kitten unless you keep an eye on him and check his behavior until he accepts the newcomer.
I understand people are stupid this way, to think about "domination" and stuff because Cesar Milan made it popular; but cats are NOT pack animals. They do NOT create social structure. If you see a ceat beating up a cat, it's not to dominate, assert, or "show them who's boss". It's to "get rid of the f***". The difference is, it does not stop when the other cat "submits". It stops when the other cat is GONE. If you want your new cat accepted, you have to work for it.

I spent hours outside with him sticking my arms into the catio and scratching his ears and belly for about a year. Then we put a cat door coming into the house from the catio and he started hanging around in the house. NOW he is fully tamed and is my shadow. He talks to me, hangs out in the bathroom with me and still goes on the back patio (no catio) and comes in when I call him. He is the most affectionate cat I have ever owned or seen. I have a feral cat I got as a young kitten. She's called Prickle. I've had another cat that was also feral, and honestly, they're THE most affectionate cats. Once they like you. But you have to find out what kind of attention they prefer, they're very specific on what is acceptable or not acceptable. I can rarely pick up Prickle, and she's sat on my lap once (because she wanted me to donate my fluffy cardigan to her), but if she's on the bed beside me, and has her back turned to me, I can snuggle her for ages, and she'll purr and talk to me. Otherwise, it's "hands off" human. You have to observe and find out what kind of attention they will accept. None of this "grab the cat up and cuddle at will" domesticated cat stuff.

I do not care what breed, but I hope he will be as affectionate as my dearest pet companion was, Smokey. When my 6-year-old cat Velvet died in my arms, I had just come home from being with my niece and her dying husband, when because Velvet didn't come to greet me as always did I called her and she finally came to me. I picked her up and she made an awful horrible sound. I was talking to her, she made that sound again. I went to my neighbor so she could take us to the night vet in our city. I went back to get my purse. When I got back to my neighbors she told me that Velvet was not alive that she must have died while I was holding her. The next day I took her to Precious Pets a place that will cremate your pet by itself so you can keep the ashes. Now Velvet is in a beautiful little box that has her picture on it on one of my shelves. A few days later I called my son and daughter-in-law and asked them to bring me two girl baby kittens, they rescue cats, they brought Teo and TwoTwo 2 of the tiniest little black ones that were less than a month old. Their mom had been killed by an opossum just as their eyes were starting to open. Well since my son apparently can't tell the difference between a girl and a boy baby I got one of each! I discovered that when Teo's tummy started getting bigger! When they were 9 months old Teo gave birth to 5 "tiny little ones" I got a human bassinet to put them in. TwoTwo got in with her and would wash their butts as Teo was nursing them. He went to the vet to be neutered! It wasn't going to happen again! I found loving homes for all 5 babies and Teo also saw the vet and was spayed. I didn't name them my son did. Of the litter, he had saved these 2 were always together hence the names, Teo was "the other" and TwoTwo for the two of them. They just turned 5 on March 7th, 2022. They are the sweetest cats. Teo will sit on my lap and talk to me and TwoTwo puts me to bed and gives me a massage. TwoTwo just started patting my leg a couple months ago to let me know they want treats or wet food. Their dry food dish always has food in it. I hope my "cat story" is not too long!

In the 1980s, I had a kitty named Levi; a huge silver tabby with the most beautiful face and belly--the latter he loved having rubbed. He was as beautiful inside as he was on the outside. Levi would watch over any homeless kitten I brought home, and he liked the company of other animals. Not surprisingly, he really liked people. Everybody loved Levi, even avowed cat haters adored him.
Once when I had a severe muscle spasm in my lower back, he wouldn't leave my side. I was also extremely restless from the pain, and he followed me from bedroom, to living room, to kitchen, bathroom, and back again to the bedroom. He tried jumping on my bed no less than three times trying to cuddle and comfort me, but I was still in too much pain and had to tell him Mommy hurt too badly. Finally, he lay down on the floor right next to the bed where he could still keep an eye on me. When I woke up a few hours later, Levi the Nurse Cat was still on duty--still there and still watching me.
When he passed and went to the Rainbow Bridge, I cried every day for a month. I can't wait to be reunited with him and my other babies.

They lived peacefully together but weren't the same closeness as male and female siblings. Both were fixed. When my mother was pregnant with me he used to curl up to her stomach to listen to my heartbeat . When my mom put me in the cradle, she got up one night to nurse, pull me out and heard " raarr",half sleepy she was like oh my goodness -my babies turned into a cat! She flipped on the light and realized she was holding our Siamese, he'd crawled in with me to keep me warm probably thinking 'you crazy humans, leaving your baby by itself'. As toddlers my female cat once took to disciplinary action when I was brushing her fur against the nape, she pulled in all her claws so she wouldn't scratch me and gave a little wack☺️. Both felt the need to supervise our bathtime ,and sat on the edge of the tub to keep an eye on us(mom eventually put the toilet lid down and they moved to sit there),they took turns doing this every night. The female died from cancer at 10yrs as is typical of calicos especially if they've received shots in the neck region apparently. The longest we've had a calico live was 11yrs . The male Siamese outlived her,and both were extremely parental towards us.

Another fact: Male cats have a higher chance to having a urinary tract infection. My family lost a male Tuxedo due to a UTI two years ago. The attending vet told my daughter of the high risk of a UTI occuring in male cats.

My 4year old male just experienced urinary blockage 3x in 5days, (catheters and IVs to unplug him) then went through PU surgery where his penis was amputated and a new shorter and wider urinary channel created. It's been rough, but he gets his stitches out in 2days. Since I lost an 8year old male years ago also for urinary blockage, I'd been sure he got wet food as well as dry. So much for that. Now it's urinary care special cat food, and making him drink more water.

A good food to try for this is Royal Canin. My last cat was a rescue and she had a TON of problems, including a mystery tube coming off her already deformed urethra. And she was tiny (8lbs fully grown) so had no resources from which to draw if she did get sick.
Sorry, essay. But the vet pointed RC dry food in front of me with strict instructions, because it makes them drink and it kept her borked innards going for 12 years, which is much longer than I expected (she was worth every penny and every moment of princess treatment too

@@randomhumanoidblob4506 I've heard that dry food promotes type 2 diabetes and other health issues in cats over the long term, because it has a much higher carbohydrate content than a cat's natural, carniverous diet. This happened to the cat of a friend of mine. It was sad, because untreated type 2 diabetes (due to my friend not taking his cat for regular checkups, and not knowing the cat's diagnoses until the cat was dying), caused heart failure and eventual death from stroke.

    • @randomhumanoidblob4506
      @randomhumanoidblob4506 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Heidi H
Yes, I'd not fed a solely dry diet before to my cats for the high carb load, especially as they chose to be indoor cats (first one was an idiot, bless him. I think I he went outside once and a big horrible piece of grass jumped at him so he never ventured out again :-) )
I think ultimately it's about balancing risks and those are dependent upon circumstance. But RC is one of the two specialist foods (the other is Hills) that vets recommend here in the UK and it's a higher quality than other dried foods so obviously my vet felt it more important she eat that and benefit from the thirst prompt. Both with her and my lad now, I'm amazed how much it actually does make them drink.
Oddly enough, she wasn't food-motivated at all but she loved it so it certainly worked out for her. Obviously everyone's individual vet guidance holds way more weight than some random eejit on YT, but it could be useful as a consideration for those with cats who barely drink - if it came over as my promoting it then apologies, because that wasn't the intent. I guess ultimately they'll all die of something and we have to try and weigh up the pros and cons of every choice to prolong that life and make it as happy as possible, and I'm just sharing some info that worked for us in this specific circ.

Yep, I'd agree with that. I've had a few cats and in general the females seem to have less "character" - less playfulness and less of a sense of humor - than the males. They're a bit more serious about life.
For me it's summed up by one time when my male cat was playing around in a cardboard box and my female cat saw him, marched straight over like it was her duty to do so, and rapped him on the skull for it. There was this real matronly air of "Cease this tomfoolery!" about it. He was totally bewildered, like "What did I do?!" :)
But the male cats do seem to respect the female cats' authority - they never attack the females, no matter what the females do to them.

We had a male tabby cat since 2000 (well until 2007 it was only my parent's cat, then I was born). He came from the streets and my parents like to say that he adopted them, not they him. At first, he was their neighbour's cat, but she couldn't take care of him. To them, he came when walking at the connected balconies of their apartment building. Funny enough, it was when my dad argued with my mom about getting a cat (he wanted a cat, she wasn't sure if it was a good idea).
So he stayed. When they moved from Liberec to Prague (both are large cities in Czech Republic), they took him with them. To this day, we have photos of me and him being best friends, me, less than 1yo using him as a pillow, or as a plushie.
He never even tried to fight me about it. Either he
    1. accepted his fate,
    2. enjoyed the attention or
    3. he didn't care.
He loved visitors, especially, when they were wearing something, that couldn't be put in a washing mashine. He always went straight to sitting on their lap and getting scratched behind ears. His name was Mates.
He died in May 2021. His body basically gave up. We decided to put him to sleep because there was no guarantee he would survive the night.
He had too little red blood cells, tartar bigger than the teeth themseves, an infection in the dent that was stopping him from eating, we had to feed him with a syringe, and had trouble walking, because he lost most of the muscle in his hind legs and he dragged them behind him, and wasn't able to even keep his body temperature. When we took him to the vet, we were 50-50 on putting him to sleep. Me and dad wanted to put him to sleep to end the pain he was in. My mom and sister wanted to keep him alive. The vet, an old aquaintance of ours, came up with the idea of measuring his body temperature. If it was over 36°C, we would try to keep him alive for a little longer. If not, we would put him to sleep, because he probably wouldn't even survive the night. His temperature was 35,4°C. We still have his ashes. I wanted a paw print to keep, but it wasn't possible. I still miss him, and to be honest, I wanted to kill myself after he died. He was 21.
We have another cat now. A stray from an elderly couple who found him in a village and took him in because they were afraid someone would drown him.
Sorry for the rant, this is my way with coping with his death.
    Edit: Typo
Edit 2: Fun fact: When we took our second cat home, we argued about how to name him. My sister wanted him to be Mini-mates*, I wanted him to be Čiko. Čiko won and dad argued that it can be like that bc he was "ČIperný KOcour" (čiperný means in this case energetic, quick, running around all the time... and kocour means male cat in Czech)
*bc our old cat was Mates and he looked like him
Also, the pronunciation of the name Mates isn't like mates in English, just set the Google translator to Czech and put Mates in the Czech box. The pronunciation is accurate. Same applies to Čiko.)

Your kitty, Mates, was a very lucky kitty to have you and your parents. Only kitties who are well cared for and loved to live as long as he did. He sounds like a little character, a kitty with purrsonality beyond other kitties. I'm willing to bet he liked being used as a pillow, I've had kitties who liked being a pillow or other forms of snuggle when we sleep. Several of them couldn't sleep right unless they were pillows. So I think it's safe to say the hooman kitten was nurtured by a kitty pillow, as in your Mate. I had a house full of kids so any pet in the household was well trained as kid toys within a day or 2. All the pets turned into derp creatures, pets that were very laid back and very docile towards the kids.
I'm so sorry for your loss, I know it's never easy to say goodbye. He'll be waiting for you at the Rainbow 🌈 Bridge when your time comes. He'll come running, healthy, kitten like Mate, as he was when you met him. He'll be as happy as he can be because he gets to be with you again.

The popularity of the name “Oliver” likely stems from the Disney film “Oliver and Company” which was a film adaptation of the novel, “Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens. The Disney film, very popular and merchandised in the nineties made more popular by the music of Billy Joel, likely stuck with a generation which is now evidently well into adulthood and adopting cats of their own.
My mom named her orange tomcat Simon after the character from Firefly. I’m certain there are additional reasons behind name popularities. You would be surprised how much pop culture influences names though. I just read an article about the rise and decline of the name “Alexa.”

I would also suggest that the series Top Gear is an inspiration here, with host Richard Hammond giving the name Oliver to a small, cute Opel he used for a program in Africa and then subsequently took back to the UK and restored. I would guess that more people have seen shows featuring that car than the movie Oliver and Company. And while old, the old Top Gear shows are still watched and rewatched by millions.

Male cats do care for kittens. Depends on the personality, really. My current calico doesn’t like kittens, she is very hostile and afraid when it comes to them. But my late ginger tabby was very affectionate with babies, he loved caring for them.

As an adult male (and straight lol), I love cats. I much prefer them over dogs. Most of my kitties have been males. Batley, Tweet, Tommy Thompson and Baby Travis. Travis is young, maybe 3. The rest have passed. But I did have one female kitty, Quincy, she lived to be 19. I find it amazing how no two cats I’ve ever owned have been alike. They all have their own personality traits and I plan on owning cats until I die. Lol

I have a massive and muscular male cat named Stalker, due to the fact that he would always be watching from the shadows when he was a stray, but when he finally came up to us, literally within a span of a few seconds, he was instantly the most attention craving cat i have ever seen. He loves nothing more that to sit with you and be pet as well as thrusting his face at you affectionately when being pet. he is a gray short hair, who's breed is believed to be Domestic Short Hair. he does eat a lot, but he is not just sweet for food, he is purely a sweet attention craving cat. he does not eat all at one like most cats, but will snack throughout the day. I have just never had a cat that was as unique as him and just wanted to share.

I was surprised about the dominant paw fact. I have two females cat and my older one is right handed. I realized that when I bought an interactive bowl for her food. For my younger cat I am not sure yet about her preference.
About male cats the last one we had was really special and quite wild. He was in love with me (I am a women) and was in competition with my husband. We had him for ten years and he never adjusted to the presence of my husband. Unfortunately when we moved, he left and we never saw him again. He was a great climber in trees and hunter. I am sad to not know what happened to him after he left. Anyway my husband was traumatized by this kind of relationship and he insisted to adopt only a female cat. Here we are ! We have a new female, adorable and really affectionate. 😻

It is not true that cats don't need companionship and can be left alone for days. I always have them in pairs, too, usually littermates. First, Jazpurr(4yrs) & Shadow(6yrs)and one of their kittens, LoBo(21yrs), then Lincoln(19yrs) and Mercedes(10 yrs), then Whisper(13yrs) and Echo (still kicking at 14yrs). Echo became very lonely & sad after his sister passed & just wasn't getting over it, so we got Arthur and Merlin to keep him company. Three weeks after the introduction Echo was back to his old self and teaching the new kittens how to behave! They are now 6 months old and as well-behaved as you can expect kittens to be ;)
I would recommend to anyone with an older pet: get the next pet before the first one is gone, they will both benefit from each other's company and habits. Introductions can be a bit tricky, but most can be managed successfully with a little bit of effort.

He had a heart attack before summer started, and burying that gorgeous sweet cat after euthanizing broke my heart. But damn it he was loved. My two male cats were both street cats that just kinda moved into my house. Griffin was the hardest to pet,he moved into my basement ,he could come and go as he pleased. After about a year he started sneaking upstairs but we already knew we were going to keep him so I started leaving my cat carrier out for him to sleep in so I could take him down to get him neutered and shots, the trick worked. He is the sweetest baby boy ever. He sleeps on me and I just adore him. Moscow our other male walked into our house and never left. He is so talkative and lovable.
