I'm so happy for him to find KOF music because no fighting game can beat this game in composing factor, KOF music is just another level, so diversified and so well done.
@@Jo_youwhatmate Guilty Gear soundtracks are excellent but they can never top SNK´s best tracks like Tears, KD0079, Crisis Control, Esaka, Korea 96 & 99 and many others, they have a so unique vibe.
I love how you described Kyo’s themes here because during 99-2000 Kyo was going through an identity crisis (due to lore reasons) so his songs during that period would give off the feeling of confusion!
I know a lot of fans enjoy seeing these and having someone experience music they love, but for people like me that are in the same boat as you and haven't heard these songs before this is such a treat. These songs are so badass, and literally reacting the same way to that sax as you did on the second song was so fun. New fan of this music for sure.
BTW KOF does implement the use of motifs on their characters themes but not with melodies but instruments. Kyo for example will have most of his songs using the guitar as it's core instrument. Iori themes have the saxophone on the main instrument. Etc. You can even tell whose character is the theme playing by just "hearing the instruments played".
So happy to see you finally getting into KoF! KoF '94 - 2003 all came out the year they were titled for on SNK's NeoGeo, which was famous for the games for arcade and console versions being virtually identical. For every OST (original sound track), they would also release an AST (arranged soundtrack) which had extended, unlooped versions of the songs with actual instruments played by the SNK Sound Team (the name of the composer team for SNK, who makes KoF). There was also a NeoGeo CD console that used the AST tracks edited to loop properly. There's been some slight variance in the SNK Sound Team over the years, but to this day they remain mostly the same people.
KOF99 is one of the best of the series when we talk about music. Sadistic eyes is my favorite, it's extremely beautiful. Thanks for the react, it's always so cool to see musicians getting amazed by these works of the old SNK
The King of Fighters used to be a yearly series from it's inception in 94 all the way to 2003, hence why the series titles' were named like that. KOFXI broke tradition after they skipped a year and since then they've been referring to each game by it's release order (KOFXV is the 15th mainline entry in the series). Some quit bit info: Kyo during the first saga (94-97) is someone who's been put in a situation where has to face his fate due to responsabilty he inherited but initially wanted no part of. Part of the character's monologue in KOF96 is him pondering about his destiny and finally coming to the conclusion to face it head on. Kyo also despite his cocky personality at this age does have a mellow side to him when it comes to people he cares about. In the 2nd saga (99-2001) he's more so consumed by rage and decides to stray away from everyone in order to face NESTS, a secret but powerful underground corporation who took Kyo and conducted mutliple experiments on him after the events of the first saga. He's not the main protagonist in this part of the story but eventually, he clashes with the main protagonist of this saga K' who is a NESTS rebel as well as someone who was infused by Kyo's DNA by the organization, and during that battle this theme plays. You can feel a lot of Kyo's rage as well as regret in Tears.
Kyo hits different as a character after the NEST saga. He gets "assassinated" off screen and comes back with his white jacket looking for revenge. Even after that saga is done Kyo still retains a bit of that edge without being an edge lord.
Nothing says 'Japanese Badass' like the saxophone. I hope there is much more King of Fighters in the future. It really is amazing. Listening to the differences between the 90s/2000 arranged vs original soundtracks is also a hell of a trip.
Iori's themes all have a Sax. Because is the instrument he plays in his band in the game lore. All of his themes are named "Arashi no saxophone" also "Sadistic Eyes" is Arashi no saxophone with other name. Like Tears is Esaka.
Iori is an interesting case. The dude is a pacifist, he hates fighting, hates KOF. Only seems to like cats, and playing music, but has a massive hate boner for Kyo Kusanagi, all his pacificm goes out the window with regards to him which is mainly why he competes to show up his rival. Dude also has the most evil laugh in the world. Both Kyo and Iori are decended from ancient clams that once battled the ancient evil earth spirit Orochi. After sealing Orochi, the two clans had a spat with each other, which led to Iori's clan swearing loyalty to Orochi and taking on his curse power. But Iori and Kyo don't seem to csre abiut any of that. Their beef is entirely personal. But even then they have teamed up before for the greater good. Iori definitely lies more on the Chaotic good side of things, he's not really a bad guy but he's not always an ally either.
Also, no matter what, Chizuru will have the last words. IDK what kind of magic or seniority but whenever she called them, they WILL LISTEN NO MATTER WHAT!!!
Iori Yagami is complex character, just like the music he plays in his band: Jazz. Not good or evil, he's an anti-hero character that has a fighting style similar to Kyo's. But while Kyo uses red flames and punches from kenpo, Iori uses purple flames and rips and tears through his opponents with his bare hands. Iori is considered badass because he's a loner, and relies on no one other than himself. I mentioned it in the ESAKA? video that Kyo is care-free, likes enjoying life, and spending time with his girlfriend, Yuki. He's a punk delinquent who ditches his highschool classes either to train or just sleep on the roof of school. There were sound dramas made for both of them with their voice actors, released around '97-'99, that are excellent digests of their lore. If interested, I have them translated on my youtube channel.
Oh boy!!! What a joy to see your reaction to these two! You're in for something extremelly special with "Older KoF" music (can't say about the newer ones since I haven't played them).
Kyo and Iori are rivals, both have fire powers, but Iori's are like... dakr and evil or something. Kyo is a firey hero type, was the protag of the first story arc, and continues to feature prominently as the poster boy of the franchise. He's basically a shoto, but with a few unique additions, varying from game to game, such as a rekka combo. Iori, being the rival, is also that, but he's edgy. His team mates are two hot women called Vice and Mature (lol). As far as music goes, Saxophone is the instrument primarily associated with Iori, so look forward to more of his themes, I guess.
Kyo got experimented on and it changed him as a person (thats why he has a new jacket and he burns off his headband. Thats why isnt wearing it, also showing his going in a different direction)
About the numbering, 94 to 2003 KOF were an annual release. Then we got Neo Wave, and after that the title numbering changed to roman numeral counting the number of KOF games released, from that point onward, we got KOF XI to XV.
Hello there uncle jesse, long time no see. I knew you were going to love this ost. KOF ost have sooooooo many bangers, it´s insane. As for the music "Tears"..... Imagine this: Your playing a brand new Kof game with a new protagonist called K´, yes, K-Dash(who is also pretty cool and also has amzing ost theme) and there is no Kyo. And then you play the game with the new hero team and you manage to get a really good run score and you beat the final Boss. Nice. But you got a really good score run, wich means secret boss fight incoming. And who do you see? The series protagonist until now, Kyo Kusanagi, with a different outfit saying how hes been missing because he was kidnaped by the NESTS corporation wich its the KOF 99 antagonit organization and then he takes of his white bandana, burns it in flames, because he has fire powers and then "Tears" starts playing and now you have to fight HIM. Tell me if this is not one of the coolest secret Boss fights introduction and set up. And then there is the music. What more can I say. Anyway, cheers, keep on keeping on Jesse and happy VGMs to us all
Iori is Kyo's his fated rival. Their clans both wield the purifyng flames, but the "Yasakani" previous name of the "Yagami" got corrupted by Orochi blood, and the flames became blue, because they were envious of the Kusanagi, since their flames were stronger.
Yasakani was more weaker than Kusanagi and yata, after made impact with orochi, the yasakani flames turn into purple, plus gaining Enhanced strength and durability, which can kill many kusanagi, but still been anoyyed by yata magic.
Being from Mexico, there's a little bit of DBZ and a little bit of KOF in all of us. These versions of the songs really speaks volumes on how hard SNK used to go with their arrange albums- the original songs coming out of the arcade cabinets were already great pieces of music driven by synth instruments playing through a Yamaha sound chip, but once you hear them arranged with real instruments and musicians, it's hard to go back.
Kyo is my favorite Fighting Game protagonist, his journey through the first arcs of the franchise can be experienced by the theme songs alone and it's so cool (which makes sense why Goodbye Esaka makes you emotional for apparent no reason). Also he always looked cool to me which helps, I'd totally go around with a headband too if I didn't look silly instead. Just to name some favorite songs from KoF for anyone reading, of course there's the "Arashi no Saxophones" from Iori, but also "Fairy" from Chizuru/KoF 96 (The third member of the main team in kof one could argue along Kyo and Iori), and of course the villain team from Kof 97 "Bloody" and "Rhythmic Hallucinations" which must be sold together do not separate. (Special mention to Trashhead as favorite final boss theme)
[Edited to add: Bloody Roar 2 and Star Ocean 3, YEEESSSS.] Tears is one of my favorite game songs, fighting genre or otherwise. It's sorrowful and ramps up beautifully. The elegant sorrow turns more aggressive and driven. Then it has the nerve to cap with what sounds like a wail (that guitar really hits) and end as it began. Brilliant.
Since you asked, yes, each KoF was released in the year of the title, never missing a year up to 2003. Then they changed the titles from year to numbered sequels, so after 2003 you have KoF XI and it's going to this day, with KoF XV being the most recent release. KoF 98, 2002 and XII are "dream battles" with no lore, just like a filler title to bring back old characters that are actually dead, like Rugal. There are four major arcs: Orochi Saga (94-97), N.E.S.T.S. Saga (99-2001), Ash Saga (2003-XIII) and the current saga that is still ongoing and I don't remember the official name (XIV, XV)
Kof from 94 to 2003 released in the same year as the title’s number, but due to a lot of complex issues they couldn’t do that anymore, so the rest mainline titles are kof 11 to 15.

Should definitely do Fairy and Arashi no Saxophone together. The themes of the other main character in Kyo's story Chiziru Kagura and Iori's pre-99 theme.
Please react to Stiil Green (KoF 97)!
Arashi no saxophone 2
Fairy (Chizuru theme)
Control Crisis
