Little context for the reason why each year have a different team formation. Iori was added to the franchise in 95, as a rival for Kyo Kusanagi, the protagonist of the 94-97 arc of KoF. All of his attacks are similar to Kyo, but with blue flames instead of red. He was paired with two villains (Billy Kane from Fatal Fury, and Eiji Kisaragi from Art of Fighting), and after the tournament, he beat the crap out of both of them, and tell them to never talk to him again. In 96, Vice and Mature were the secretaries of the 94-95 boss, Rugal Bernstein. With the death of their employer, they convinced Iori to join forces with them to participate on this year tournament. In the ending, it's revealed that the Yagami family have some blood connection with Orochi (the bigger bad of the first arc), and both women were actually priests of Orochi, and were tasked to awaken Orochi blood inside Iori. They did, and Iori enter a berserk state, where he end up killing Vice and Mature. For 97, he just decided to enter the tournament solo because he don't trust anyone to group up with him. He eventually have his Orochi blood awakened during the tournament and Orochi Iori is a mid-boss that you fight in the 7th stage of single player mode. If you have Iori on your team, you fight Orochi Leona instead (another character with connections with Orochi). The true ending of 97 is Kyo and Iori teaming up to actually seal Orochi once and for all. And then they both disappear, and only return in KoF'99 as secret characters.
And also in 97 a rival musical band of Iori, the New Face team enters the tournament to beat Iori literally.. but then was also revealed to a part of the game's big bad lol. Their theme music Bloody 97 is also bangin.
I only say this out of respect since you seem to be a big KoF fan, but you might have one kind of red-green color blindness and no one told you Iori's flames have always been purple and not blue. Although I bet blue looks cool as hell on him too haha
Listing bands here if you want to listen further on where these saxophonists came from. KOF 95, original Arashi no Saxaphone - Shigeo Fuchino. He's a member of The Seatbelts, which was Yoko Kanno's band that was mainly known for working on the soundtrack for Cowboy Bebop. But there was plenty of other works. KOF 96, Arashi no Saxaphone 2 - Nobuyuki Mori - He's a member of the Japanese bands Original Love and Surface (not the R&B group lol). KOF 97, Cool Jam ~Arashi no Saxophone 3~ - Osamu Koike - ALSO a saxophonist for The Seatbelts, but also a ton of solo albums. He's the easiest to find solo. Albums to look out for - Inside (1999), Diamond Land (2000).
Just FIY, the band that plays most of the arranged versions is Nobuyuki Mori (Saxophone), Osamu Koike (Saxophone), Chiharu Mikuzuki (Bass), Jun Kajiwara (Guitar), Ken Morimura (Keyboard), Chizuko Yoshihiro (Organ), Nobuo Eguchi (Drums) and Brother-Hige is the one that usually do the "vocals" (you know, saying 'cool' or 'double time')
The main reason why KOF is so popular in Mexico is because back in the day SNK used to release arcade cabinets that were essentially Neo Geo units with switchable cartridges. It was much cheaper for arcade operators to change or upgrade the games in the cabinets, and some would even have multiple games that the players could choose from (like a console). This was extremely popular in regions like Latam and South America because it was more affordable for arcades to implement - rather than spending a thousand dollars on the new Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat cabinets, they could spend a fraction of that and get all the new SNK games.
11:26 Favorite saxophone players on YT for me are Insaneintherain and Patrick Bartley, leader of the J-MUSIC Ensemble, specially Patrick, man does some crazy stuff with that sax 🎷
Imagine how he'd react if he heard Arashi no Saxophone ~ 4 also known as Stormy Scream from KoF 2000 The funny thing about iori (the red head) is that most people expect his theme to be punk rock based like his aesthetic implies but in lore he's actually a Jazz musician. From what images I saw of him, he's mostly seen with a bass guitar.
I prefer he'd react to "Control Crisis" rather than Stormy scream. Stormy scream is not as good as the other themes. For me Stormy scream is not that good, on par with Funky Esaka (95)
26:50 Well, by the time the 90s arrived, Jun Kajiwara had become more involved as a session guitarist and was recognized as one of Japan's top guitarists during that decade. His first credited role in an SNK album was as a guest musician on the Fatal Fury 2 Special Image Album, where he played 'London March' and many other tracks. And then later he became a regular contributor to their arranged albums, starting with KOF '95, and was also involved in Street Fighter EX1 Plus A and EX2 later on."
The bass solo in 97 almost made me crack out my bass again, it's so sick. I can't slap for shit tho, lol, lack of practice. I don't even know if I could pick a favorite of this track, they're all SO good, including future ones. Glad this finally made it to the channel, I've been so ready for this!
Just for some clarity, the arranged versions don't appear in the original games but were arranged for CD release. This series consistently has amazing music, original or arranged. You can boot up any KOF or adjacent SNK fighting game and every song is a hit.
It would be very cool if you could react to 'Fictitious or real', the team's theme song in which Kyo and Iori are working together even though they're rivals. This song incorporates electric guitars, acoustic guitar, bass, and Sax beautifully!
Thank you so much for listening to my request! And happy 30th anniversary to KOF, the greatest fighting game ever! (Yes, I’m biased, I’m cosplaying as Kyo in my picture) You were right, Iori had no theme in 94, since he wasn’t a character yet. In fact, KOF94 was a radically different game in that you had to select from premade teams of three and couldn’t customize your team until KOF95. 95 was my introduction to KOF, though was reintroduced to it through the Neo Geo Pocket. The director of Smash Bros said Iori Yagami’s creation was “pure genius.” Jazz music is the perfect music for Iori, because it is very complex in composition, just like Iori himself as a character. Iori even plays Bass in his own jazz band too, and is said to feel the most alive when he performs, a contrast to his lonely solo existence. You are very astute on reading the character’s personalities through their music!
I echoed your "Finally" near the beginning the of the video lol. It's been said but I'll repeat that the KOF series have some of the best music in fighting games. Arashi No Saxophone means Saxophone Storm or Storm of Saxophone. If you ever feel inclined I recommend making a reaction to the whole King Of Fighters 96 soundtrack. If I am not mistaken you including this one you already to three of the music from that soundtrack. I especially recommend Dust Man, Fairy and Trash Head from there. If you're looking for jazzy piano and saxophone I'd recommend Crazy Visage from Kakegurui. It's an anime but it's still good music (imo).
Sometimes, you find a song that just feels like whoever played had a blast recording the song. Most of Iori's themes have that feeling for me. Especially Cool Jam
"Arashi No Saxophone 2" was the most "sassy" track that surpasses its background of a Fighting Scene, it is more fittable to a "Cruising" context(also the Stage of Iori's team was on a ferry/yacht at a bay.)
The King of Fighters franchise just made 30 year anniversary. Great time to react to this. Kof96 is my favorite for the songs, and kof97 is my favorite for gameplay.
Ever since I found this channel I awaited the day you would get to Cool Jam. I was head banging the entire time 🎷 KOF music hits different. Glad you enjoyed it and the other two songs 🤘🏿.
Well, since you like the saxophone. There's another arranged song in KOF99 that is 100% a jazz song called: 176th street . It's the fatal fury team theme song and yes, it absolutely has saxohpone in it and it's a very very awesome song
Kyo 96 is the classic good guy hero who love martial arts and a challenge. Iori 97 is the brooding loner anti-hero that does anything he wants hence the sensuality and free flow you mentioned : )

I had a feeling these would bring you joy, and the nice thing is you have several more versions to hear for whenever you're in the mood for a pick me up. I haven't played every KoF but Iori is often one of the first characters I try out. I first learned how to play him in Capcom VS SNK 2 where he's still one of my mains, but he's relatively popular in most KOFs and is often top-tier, at least in the last few games.
Man Arashi no Saxophone 96 for a long time was my favorite, maybe because of the intensity, but nowadays, holy shit Arashi peaked at 95, the very first, and Iori's themes stayed consistently high in the soundtrack of the entire KoF series, SNK sound team of old was simply unmatched godlike beings at fgs soundtracks I would love a react of Slayer's (Guilty Gear) tracks
Always looking for JesseFGC videos! Thanks for the all these Arashi no Saxophone versions at once, still watching but i bet it's gonna be fun to see you compare then.
Btw, you only hear the arrange version during fights in few versions of the game. You hear on: 1) PS1/SATURN port of the time. But with loading times between rounds, you only hear parts of it. 2) On the Japanese version of the compilation Orochi Collection (95-97 games) for PS2. But it does not play it full, it fades out after a minute and half and start from the beginning again during the fight. A shame really, these songs never really got the treatment they deserve in games and were never used again as far as i know. I imagine it could be a licensing issue with the performances/musicians or label which i would guess its the same reasons they were never re-released or be present in streaming services (while the FM original versions are all present). VGMDB do not list the composers or arrangers for each piece of music, going according to the OST credits (very common practice at the time unfortunately). it only generically states composed and arranged by SNK Sound Team
I love me some street fighter but Kof has always been my favorite. Snk games have some other amazing gems like waku waku 7! Been playing snk fighting games since I was a kid on the streets of Mexicali XD
the reason iori gets all these funky jazzy themes is because he has a band, its supposed to be the music of his band, also a fighting game character that hates violence... yet he is there almost every year lmao
Thanks for doing this, man. KOF has indeed lots of great tunes, and Iori's almost always have the saxophone element put into it... it's kinda his seal.
i remember when i was younger i would go to a local arcade and i mostly stuck with what i was familiar with and what other people were playing, capcom fighters like super street fighter 2 and x-men vs street fighter and namco fighters like tekken 3 and soul calibur 2, and one day after getting bored of playing those same games i decided to try checking out the small neo-geo cabinet in the corner that was always empty which had kof 96, and listening to arashi no saxophone 2 and esaka for the first time (and honestly all the soundtracks in the game) i was blown away, which lead to me playing trying snk and other games, it helped me see the advantage of being open-minded and not just stick to what i knew. great reaction btw!
Nahh each character theme in VGM has its place and purpose, none are above each other. In some situations Kyo's "Tears" hits so much harder on an emotional level
There's a story being told with those team compositions. He keeps beating up or straight up killing his team mates because of his cursed Orochi blood and is all on his own in KOF97.
@@randomness4989 Nah, Billy and Eiji are alive, Iori just beat the shit out of them. Mature & Vice died though. But they're immortal spirits under the service of Orochi, so even without a body of their own, they can possess lookalikes when they need to come back to the mortal world for something. And they got revived after the events of KoF XIV, due to what happened at the end of KoF XIV.
Peeps translate 'Arashi no saxophone' as 'Stormy sax' but I actually prefer "Saxophone of the storm", it fits Iori because he's a musician (not a sax player but a bassist...who plays Jazz) and since he's kinda on the nuts side of his mind his mood varies a lot, just like his themes
Definitely do KoF XIII's, XIV's, and XV's Sexxxooooophones in the future. It's all basically a sequel of each-other, since it's Iori himself on the sax. It's an ongoing story, everevolving and neverending. All the way, since '95.
dude, If you love the Sax, do yourself a favour and listen to Jon here's rerecording of the Cannon Fodder Lost in Service music. search Jon Hare Narcissus. Has the sax player from live Pink Floyd shows. Also KOF 95 is my favourite version.
I love some arrange versions (ASTs) but I believe original versions (OSTs) would be better option to react to. Cause OSTs was that we hear it, while we are playing! I apologize in advance for my english!
Arranged versions are so much better in my eye, but that's probably because I have no nostalgia for the arcade versions. That NeoGeo sound font just doesn't do it for me, especially when they try to emulate real instruments.
LFG!!!🎉
HAPPY 30 YEARS KOF!!
And Jesse, TYSM!!
Now we wait for Bosses themes from KOF to lisen. Like Geese or Rugal.
I always joke that the ghost of vice and mature are haunting Iori playing sax wherever he goes

About KOF being popular in Mexico:
Piracy

@@randomness4989 Nah, Billy and Eiji are alive, Iori just beat the shit out of them.
Mature & Vice died though. But they're immortal spirits under the service of Orochi, so even without a body of their own, they can possess lookalikes when they need to come back to the mortal world for something.
And they got revived after the events of KoF XIV, due to what happened at the end of KoF XIV.
@@WoobertAIOAk i see, thank you for the infos really appriciate it
Finally, Jesse listening to bangers from KOF.
Here we go! 🎷🎷🎷
"The King of Fighters"
More like "The King of Soundtracks" ♥️🤘🏻
We are in the GOATed zone
Peeps translate 'Arashi no saxophone' as 'Stormy sax' but I actually prefer "Saxophone of the storm", it fits Iori because he's a musician (not a sax player but a bassist...who plays Jazz) and since he's kinda on the nuts side of his mind his mood varies a lot, just like his themes
I've been waiting for this~
thanks man, love u
Definitely do KoF XIII's, XIV's, and XV's Sexxxooooophones in the future.
It's all basically a sequel of each-other, since it's Iori himself on the sax. It's an ongoing story, everevolving and neverending. All the way, since '95.
Finally we got Arashi no Saxaphone
Oh shit, youtube doing its work.
Just keep doing these lol!
IT'S KOF DAY !!
LETS FUCKING GO
dude, If you love the Sax, do yourself a favour and listen to Jon here's rerecording of the Cannon Fodder Lost in Service music. search Jon Hare Narcissus.
Has the sax player from live Pink Floyd shows.
Also KOF 95 is my favourite version.
sick rec, thanks brother
@@regralht3529 No worries dude
I was waiting for this
GET THIS MAN A DEAR FALLING ANGEL OR A KETCHAKU R&D RIGHT NOW
Best fighting theme ever!!
After listening to these you should definitely check out the SNK Heroines song Stormy Saxophone.
This is arrange version, love the og, more simple
Great content
Fun fact: iori is in a band and he plays the bass guitar
OMG....I AM GETTING OLD
Dude, if you like saxophone, please, you must hear 10.000 bullets OST
I love some arrange versions (ASTs) but I believe original versions (OSTs) would be better option to react to. Cause OSTs was that we hear it, while we are playing!
I apologize in advance for my english!
not if you played in the Neo Geo CD (but that loading time... argh)
@@LoaRicardo Yeah, same case in PS1, but KOF was the THING thanks to the ÁRCADE, that release on a console that was a failure is irrelevant!
Arranged versions are so much better in my eye, but that's probably because I have no nostalgia for the arcade versions. That NeoGeo sound font just doesn't do it for me, especially when they try to emulate real instruments.
Bro just vibe
I love LADYNSAX on youtube for sax music
I don't care that you don't take requests, listen to stormy saxophone 5!!!
Kof's scratched songs are very good, but the original OST are irreplaceable
96 or bust.
ummm 98 was a banger too
Finaly! i waiting for this moment!
