Psycho Soldier was the first ever video game song with lyrics from the game of the same name. There are around 20 versions of this song and honestly the Smash version might be the best

This song actually predates the KOF series! It comes from the classic SNK game Psycho Soldier - which itself is a successor to SNK's earlier game Athena - starring Athena Asamiya, the descendant of Princess Athena from the earlier game, who fights alien invaders while also being a high school student and a pop idol. The song itself was already popular from Psycho Soldier's release of 1987 (you could even get a cassette containing the song if you bought the Famicom release of Athena back in the day) that when SNK decided to include a Team Psycho Soldier headlined by Athena in The King of Fighters, this was the clear song to choose for their theme.
You can totally feel the classic 80s anime theme song vibes in it, and its all the better for it!

Hearing that you plan on getting to Arashi no Saxophone has me hyped.
The King Of Fighters ASTs are probably the first bits of Video Game Music that I'd listen to as part of my "normal music" playlist

This guy's youtube channel is gonna get a LOT of love with all the KOF vids lol
Song was sung by the VA for Athena at the time (Reiko Fukui). Arranged KOF songs go hard. OST versions are different for sure, but they have their own appeal.
The SNK Sound Team does a ton of live tracks. Excited to share some of that at some point down the line.

KOF has a strong presence in a lot of Latin American countries (not just Mexico, places like Brazil and Chile too iirc), China, Singapore (as you mentioned), and South Korea as memory serves. A large part of it was how cheap the SNK cabinets were as opposed to Capcom cabinets, so those countries ended up buying a lot more of them and the popularity spread from there.
That's as far as I remember how it spread from there, but correct me if I'm wrong. I think the recommendation that was thrown your way was Stormy Saxophone 2 and I second that notion.

I'm from Chile and I remember playing KOF, FF and MK as a kid in the local arcade, but having to go to the big city arcades if I wanted to play SF or KI. That definitely checks out.

      @LoaRicardo ปีที่แล้ว +5

At the late 90's, early 00's even outside the arcades the SNK were bigger here in Brazil. We used to have game rental shops where people could pay to play 1 hour or more of any game, and even with the long load times, people used to play KoF and the Real Bout series on the NeoGeo CD more than any other. SFA2 and MvC2 at the Dreamcast were the only others that could rival it

The smash bros ultimate version of Psycho Solider is my favorite but this version is also super dope! I also really need to dive into the kof series osts cause from the very few tracks ive heard, they're all bangers.

  • @DylanYoshi

Others have mentioned the original song is from a game called Psycho Soldier, but it's also worth mentioning how that song's vibes differ from the ones seen in this version. The original version of the song is really interesting because it utilizes a lot of instrumentation that sound like they'd be out of an 80's movie (think the Beverly Hills Cop theme) but the song's flow and vocals and structure sound like they come from a 70's superhero anime or tokusatsu (look up something like the Gatchaman anime or the Japanese Spider-Man series for an idea on what that sounds like). You do get a bit of that from this version, but you REALLY hear it in the original.

KOF took Street Fighter's crown in 1994, then upped them again with 95. This is the most solid period for SNK with Art of Fighting 3 , Fatal Fury 3, Samurai Shodown 2 etc.

To add a bit of context, Athena Asamiya is a high school student, martial artist and pop idol, hence the song having an 80s pop flair to it. She is probably one of the characters with the most redesigns throughout the series.
The song also has an English version which is only one verse, and has only appeared 3 times: in the overseas version of game Psycho Soldier, a short part of the 2018 arrangement for the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection (this is the first time the current JP voice actress of Athena have sung it; also in KOF XV) and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

  • @LoaRicardo

KoF has started as an cross-over of the many SNK games. Psycho Soldier was releasead in 1987 and was one of the first games to featured the first song with vocals. That music is an version of the 1987 song. And as people has been asking.... Arashi no Saxophone 2 is maybe the greatest song of the series. One of my favorites is Kamikirimushi, the Art of Fighting theme song of KoF 96, and other curveball I've do choose is Ryo, the Kim Theme from KoF 95

    Psycho Soldier is fantastic, honestly.
I know your backlog is endless, but I do hope to see Goodbye Esaka (Arranged) from KOF 2000 at some point too. That's my favorite KOF song to this day!!

If i'm not mistaken, the case with this version of the track is that is came from the NeoGeo CD version of KOF'94, which due to the nature of CD over cartridge at the time was supporting CD quality audio.
The KOF'94 you can find on most platforms tends to only include the midi tracks.

It is really fun when we see Athena as a magical girl heroine from a 80's/90's live action show, this should be the opening.
Out of curiosity, I think SNK made at least 2 other sung versions of this theme, on 96 and 97 (I don't think they used this theme on 95).
AND, kof has a great audience here in Brazil, too! XD
SNK Sound Team, it seems game companies having they composers playing around was quite a thing on 80's and early 90's. Sega had a strong presence back them too, look for Sega S.S.T

Please listen to more KOF and SNK in general and especially the Samurai Shodown series (SS 1-4 + two Hyper NeoGeo games, you can safely ignore the later SNK/Playmore entries).

    PSYCHO BALL! PSYCHO SWORDUU!🪄
KOF is full of gritty, serious martial artists, and then you have Athena, a magical warrior who became an idol singer. Perfect fit.

"I need to listen to more King of fighters!"
Yes I've been waiting for Jesse to say those words and yes you do More people need to start suggesting Jesse more King of fighters music. It is so criminal that for someone that enjoys makes and listens to as much music from video games as this guy who appreciates it that you haven't shown him the absolute gargantuan beast that is the king of fighters music song library. There is so much style variety and variance to the King of fighters song library you've only started scratching the surface which I which I think you've only listened to about maybe two the three songs. Some of the arranged versions of the soundtracks are amazing and some of the best video game music out there not just for fighting games. I would like to suggest some of the best songs cuz I actually own every king of fighters song from 94 all the way up to 15 on CDs that I've gotten from Japan or downloaded. I have so many good hits to suggest to you even from some of the more obscure games. I really hope you do go into more KOF music because it is probably some of my favorite video game music of all time. Rock on Jessie

I like the original 87 version of this the best (it sounds even more "Eightes" than this!), but this is a damn close 2nd. But my favorite SNK vocal track ever is still Blue Mary's Blues.
Capcom's got its share of fighting game vocal tracks too tho - Sakura's and Roll's themes were among the very first Japanese songs I ever heard (along with Mystical Ninja starring Goemon).

Not one of the versions I was familiar with, but certainly a really cool version… Originally from the game the character originated from, I think it was called Psycho Soldier… I forget… Having played Capcom vs SnK 2, I got a bit confused with Athena at first, because there were two SNK Athenas and the one in that game is the other one, if I remember correctly lol… One might have been based on the other though… I’m not sure…

    ●Sadistic eyes (kof 99)
    ●Seoul road (kof 96)
    ●the way to rebirth(kof 99)
    ●tears (kof 99)
    ●Goodbye esaka (kof 2000)
    ●fairy (kof 96)
    ●esaka forever y cool jam (kof 97)
Podria mencionar mas pero esas son mis recomendaciones principales por si a alguien le interesa y se anima a escucharlos.
