    Honestly I have only seen the first two Hellraiser movies and liked them quite a bit, I decided to not watch the movies after because I have heard that they get progressively worse and worse. Your reviews of all of the movies have pretty much proved me right in this choice. I would say that one of the biggest missteps was in taking away the neutral and ambiguous nature of the Cenobites making them typical horror movie monsters instead of these beings of extreme pain and pleasure only doing what they think the person who solved the puzzle box wanted. I also find Kirsty to be a rather likable protagonist with the fact that she is rather smart and will fight back.

    • @morganyoung3557
      @morganyoung3557 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Antichrist2000 I am glad to hear that I made the right choice since all the movies after the first two just sound awful. Freddy Kruger is a great killer and enjoyable in his own right, but I agree that shouldn’t be the blueprint of what Pinhead and the Cenobites should be modeled after. The whole thing that makes them creepy is not that they are evil but because of the way they look and their belief in extreme pleasure found in extreme pain. In fact the villains of Hellraiser movies should always be evil people like Frank Cotton and Julia Cotton, not the Cenobites. Also pissed when I found out what they did to Kirsty in the sixth movie too.

    I read/heard somewhere that the reason Chatterer suddenly has eyes in the second film is that the actor was uncomfortable in the first films costume as he couldn’t see anything, therefore requested eyes for the second installment.

    I think frank looking less human than Julia was because of the amount of blood was given to their “death beds” (quite literally in Julia’s case)
    Frank got whatever blood was dripping from Larry’s hand, while Julia got a whole body and even more provided by Channard.

  • @Slappap

    Wasn't Channard connected to the leviathan by that tube thing on his head? I always thought when his head came off it was because it was regretting him for some reason like the total death of all the cenobites (maybe not really that bad as I guess leviathan was okay with it, but bc Channard was trying to replace or make a new cenobite out of someone that didn't open the box freely. and other reasons like I felt personally that Channard started to see himself as a god and in the end that really pissed off leviathan and thats why it killed him, but thats me. and thats why in a way the resurrection of pinhead, to have someone to replenish and create more cenobites.

    With the fight I almost don't know what I was hoping for, I mean the moment of them facing him was badass but at the same time we haven't really had any indication they are good at fighting and only pinhead has anything that useful in a fight. It would have been better if it had been a closer fought thing with the Cenobites at least being armed with some torture devices and seeming to enjoy the wounds they take.

  • @Barnesofthenorth
    @Barnesofthenorth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The ending fight could have been a bit better as well not only if it was a closer thing, but if the "this was you" thing didn't work, Pinhead just looks at it and says "ah yes, before I discovered this world of pleasure of pain" and casts it aside, highlighting that they actually like the forms they are in now, and it's not some weird mind control, as that's how it ends up looking. They could then still have had the fight as they would disagree with Channards more insane ways of doing things, as they have a strict religiously ordered way of doing things, thus still giving Kirsty time to escape.
    It's weird but even though I do still like this film as well, it's clear they were already starting to veer away from "Angles to some Daemons to others" thing, probably because audiences didn't quite get it and just thought they were the evil bad guys.

    I had no idea the female cenobite was sister celise . There is a really cool book of short stories by various authors called Hellbound Hearts that are all inspired by Barker's original novel and one of the stories deals with her origin. If you liked the Hellbound Heart i can't recommend the collection enough because there are some great stories in it ( a couple that come close to rivaling the original IMO).

    Two things I think time may also be a factor in how fresh you are when you come back and from what I know the whole Larry in hell thing was supposed to be what the movie showed but since the actor who played Larry didn't return for this movie they basically let the script run up to the point of reveal and then just winged with that bit hence why it is kind of out of place in comparison with the rest of the movie.

    I know that this is 8 years late, but according to the directors commentary on the DVD of Hellrasier 2, Peter Atkins (the writer) states the reason why Channard was able to take out the Cenobites is because they were "weakened" by the revelation that they were once human. Under "normal" circumstances, they would have won. In my own personal opinion, the Cenobites death is ass and it really pisses me off.

    Weird interpretation of mine-The Labyrinth version of "Hell" is all Tiffany's vision of hell. Everything we see there is translated through Tiffany's conscious. I'm not suggesting it's unreal-it has a weight and reality of it's own. Just that "Hell" can't be viewed or interpreted into human perception without a filter. The puzzle box opens Hell to the solver, so it's Tiffany's lense through which all the characters in this particular adventure see it. Like the insanity that traps her, Hell is viewed as puzzles and traps that make it hard to communicate with others. When Leviathan is "solved" so is Tiffany's perception but in reverse. Tiffany opens the doorway back to the real world by normalizing her perception of the real world.
    I was never bothered by Kirsty becoming Julia. That's clearly a piece of Kirsty's quest. Kirsty came from the same family and background as both Julia and Frank. She does keep calling to and working with the Cenobytes. She is destined to be a Cenobyte. From a practical standpoint, learning to skin walk is just her first major step toward embracing the magics of the otherside. From an allegorical standpoint, she is no longer the babe to be sacrificed but has become the witch doing the sacrificing by literally walking in the witch's skin.

  • @Barnesofthenorth
    @Barnesofthenorth 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I mean the killing the cenobites really does kind of ruin it as it makes you end up thinking "oh so she could have stopped them with a gun... or a knife... or the feared pointed stick as they are literally just stabbed and die, yet the doctor can have a blender in his head and still be alive... why is he able to survive things that would kill normal people but the others aren't? were they just crappy half-breed versions and he was meant to be an improves more pure version?
    It's a shame the rest ended so badly as I would have loved to have seen more on the cenobites world and what they get up to when people aren't opening boxes, but alas it was not to be... and while every other old film gets a remake that is at least passable (sometimes even good) Hellraiser continues going with utter horseshit instead of a solid restart with a director who realises it could be gold.

      @deusdeaconReviews  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @AnekoFoxx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Deusdaecon Reviews If that’s the case, couldn’t Tiffany have had a desire to solve the puzzle just for the sake of solving it? That’s a desire, right?
      Wait, didn’t one of the other Hellraiser movies show someone being forced at gunpoint to open the Lament Configuration and the Cenobites took everybody except one person? Or am I misremembering it?

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tiffany had zero desire to open the box she was mentally ill and just had a compulsion to solve puzzles, it was an automatic unconscious response from her, she neither wanted to understand nor cared about any of the puzzles she solved, also yeah a few times someone has solved the box at gun point, but thats still a desire to open it to end the current situation.

    • @AnekoFoxx
      @AnekoFoxx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Deusdaecon Reviews Oooh okay. Thanks for explaining to me. Had Tiffany found the box on her own, she would have solved it, but no cenobites would have showed up because she did it automatically without thought or desire. Gotcha.

    It sucks cause the character that Pinhead is banned on was actually of "feminine" origins

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well technically pinhead is more of a combination of two different cenobites who appear in the hell bound heart, one of those was indeed feminine in nature.

    Is Leviathan suppose to be a living thing or just a machine? The movie gets religious so, I can't but be baffled because aren't Leviathans the first beasts created by God before humanity? lol, the skit at 7:42 is so me during horror films by this point. Other people are in states of shock and horror and I'm busy eating pasta with tomato sauce with A Serbian Film or Cannibal Holocaust on the TV...after the first few hundred times watching the likes of Salo, Irreversible and the like it becomes pretty rote...
    Mind you, put on an Adam Sandler, Tyler Perry or *shudder* Kirk Cameron movie and things become deathly serious with barf buckets galore...

    Supposedly the filmmakers rasn out of money before the hell climax was completed. You can tell that Frank and Julia were meant to fall down a chasm, or die in some other way, but instead they film the hallway, as if they were being sucked down it, or hell tilted ninety degrees, to make it a deadly fall. I've heard the filmmakers were very unhappy with the end. I love it except for the Doctor Cenobite, with his corny jokes. Hellraiser doesn't need one liners.

    Why do youtuber's think recapping a movie scene by scene with occasional quips qualifies as a review? Still enjoyed the video

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because its a simple and easy way to give the "quips" or as i call them comments, criticisms, "the review" context and weight without having to waste your time and mine by explaining what i mean, this film is 21 years old now, no one should need a simple yay or nay on it, so we go through piece by piece with you the viewing public (to make you feel like we're experiencing it together) in an analytical and critical way, its more a post mortem analysis then a review, but review is easier to fit in the title description.

      This is one of the few channels that almost always has something of value to say after each summary. He'll comment on clever details, (or not-so-clever details), and either compliment or critique how each scene contributes to the film's entirety.
      Take another reviewer, Decker Shado. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike his videos, but that's a reviewer who does a lot of summarizing and says little about it. Also, context.

    I wasn't a huge fan of Hellraiser 1, but thought it was alright for what it was. Hellraiser 2 however seemed to just fall victim to all the usual faults of shitty sequels: Fucking up the order of resurrections, rushing the franchise's process (Like the xenomorph lifecycle in AvP), giving explanations that doesn't really make much sense for the cenobites, which had been much better left unexplained and to the imagination.
    Also, the doctor isn't scary or doesn't even feel like a cenobite. He's just goofy as hell. And how does that thing on his head even work? Is he flying? Is he being dragged? Why is he, and not the other cenobites, like that?? Why did they even fight against each other? Because they found out they were human? Well, the doctor knew that when he got out of the machine, so how was he fine with it? Didn't they have their memory leaving the machine? Goddamn it, Im thinking too much about this stupid shit.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      to answer a few of your questions channard was intentionally different, his penis hat was apparantly leviathan itself, making channard more like its puppet, literally of course as well as matephorical, the other cenobites werent willing or aware of the transformation, channard was and actively wanted it, Im not saying i agree or like those explanations that just what other sources say is the case.

    • @sandreid87
      @sandreid87 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Deusdaecon Reviews Okay, but to be a cenobite, they would have used the cube, no? Like we saw Pinhead to at the beginning of the 2nd movie? So they wanted sensations or pleasures, or whatever, right? So, how is that different from Channard? Seems like they were willing themselves?
      See, that's the problem with sequels for me:
      They try to explain more, and because of it, make what was just a mystery before, now just seem illogical, or even flat out stupid. It ruins the mystique and tries to expand on something, that didn't need expanding. Or at least not in that way. They could easily have kept the mystique and just repeated the formula from the original movie, with some differences of course.
      It seems so obvious to me, that the story of the sequel was only written, to try and cash in on the Hellraiser popularity. If that isn't the case, and the sequel was written before the first movie was even filmed, then I'm afraid I've given that movie too much credit, lol.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree if you explain something too much youll ruin it especially when i comes to horror, cause the best horror lets the imagination run riot, but with hellbound i personally think they toe the line without crossing it, also yes they use the puzzle box with the promise of inimaginable pleasure but 1. theyre not wanting/expecting the cenobites channard was because he did his reasearch, and 2 they doubly not expecting to become monstrous minions to its whim, and although in that case channard wasnt, he was power mad and had the delusions of grandeur likening himself to a god allready in his own mind so leviathan just made that a reality.

    • @sandreid87
      @sandreid87 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Deusdaecon Reviews Yeah, I get what you are saying, but it seem feels off for me. Leviathan is never referenced again in later movies, as far as I know. The whole Leviathon "god" doesn't really explain anything. It just tries to serve as a kind of explanation or purpose, but it ultimately just explains a mystery, with a even bigger mystery. Or in this case, a black plot hole.
      Only thing I thought when I saw it for the first time was "wtf is that?", "how is that a god?" and "how does it work?", lol. The movie never really explains any of these things and it just leaves for more to be desired, if anything. they could have made an entire movie about Leviathon, but they would probably just have fucked that up, hehe.
