- MDHR Studio is amazing at doing HIGH quality animation on their boss phase transformations. It brings flair to the villians and can turn a boss fight on its side or totally change the formula of the combat. I had a little fun and did a personal ranking of my favorite animations in the Cuphead DLC. From Mortimer Freeze long legged skating to Chef Saltbaker smiling like we are new lore, we rank all bosses from the Delicious Last Course!

Something I'd like to point out is that in the Glumstone fight, you can actually see multiple other mountains with faces in the background, so Glumstone isn't the only giant who seems to have turned into a mountain in the area.
He’s probably the only one with sugar though. XD

5:29 I love this boss just for the fact that they used the term "dogfight" in both literal and figurative way. In aviary terms, dogfight is an aerial battle between fighter aircraft conducted at close range, which is exactly what happens in this boss, but they made the pilots ACTUAL dogs, which is just genius!😉🐶🛩

Same goes for Esther the "cowgirl". And I'm sure the big boss being the personification of salt has modern slang in mind, too.
Honestly, Esther's first transition was one of the most satisfying animations to ever watch in this game period.
The other contenders in my opinion are Mortimer Freeze's second phase animations (especially the fridge) and the Rook himself. Just. The Rook.
I love how seamless & Smoothe the flow of her sucking up the entire building with the vacuum, and then ending the transition with her hoping on the skeers and immediately starting phase 2, it was just so cool to look at
8:16 Another small detail is that you can see his eyes roll into his head for a brief moment as the screen turns white. It's easier to spot in those videos of people breaking the Chef Saltbaker boss fight.

I think you should have rated these transitions on how good they are on cuphead level and not overall. It's like taking the best boss from like 10 different video games and then putting them all in ss tier.
Yeah I agree, Even though all of the animations are incredible, when the title says "ranked" you usually expect to see a lot more comparison and variation than just saying every transition is good and that's it
Especially with something like the sausage can one, sure it's good, but by cuphead standards (which, imo, is what a tier list should be based on) it's kind of sub-parr creativity wise
Also before I get 50 replies telling me that I'm a bad person and that studio MDHR tried their best, and can't do everything perfectly, I never said it was bad by any means, I'm just saying that instead of ranking everything good, comparing them and having a more varied list (whilst still emphasising that all the animations are still good) would have made for a much more interesting video from my perspective

the snow thing that mortimer goes into for his 2nd phase is actually sentient and mortimer is most likely just fusing with it to gain more power.
it is shown to be sentient in the comic strip where chef saltbaker is doing the community service in one of the panels you can see it fishing in the background

I must agree, Howling Aces... is pure phenominal. But I think Esther's was the funniest.
Hands down howling aces has the coolest animation, especially from the big ass helicopter thing grabbing the mf screen

I've always found that the devil fight is rather easy compared to king dice before him. I feel that it would truly be the hardest boss in the game (which the game kinda hypes it up to be) if that secret phase was included in the base fight
Tbh the devil would still be pretty easy regardless. I dunno if its because the plane fights from Isle 3 gave me actual pain tolerance, but I beat the devil on expert first try, and got S rank in like four or five tries

Another cool fact, the bulldog in the first phase of the doggone dogfight boss fight is a direct reference to Winston Churchill, also known as “The British Bulldog”. You can tell by him obviously being a bulldog, he’s a pilot, as well as his hat which is a red beret, which were often worn by British soldiers that there’s a connection.

2:00 what's interesting is that there is actually cut animation of a transition to the Devil's phase which matches up the knockout of the devil and angel. th-cam.com/video/waK7-2SnnO4/w-d-xo.html
So given the context of that video, Devil jumps out of his skin, angel and demon and appear on a platform, they go back into the devil's skeleton, devil possibly grows his skin back, opens his eyes and Devil's second phase would likely start

I never noticed that the canned sausages have an MDHR branding. While the cooker has the usual ACME branding which is also seen on the Howling Aces hanger and bags of fertilizer in the root pack.
Btw the cooking pot thing in winchester's fight actually says ACME which is a reference to the looney toons Wiley coyote. in fact in the root pack fight their is also an ACME reference because you can see a bag of soil with ACME on it. But the can of sausage's phase in the fight does say HDMR so you got it half right.

The best part on the final phase of the moonshine mob is the real knockout. The real announcer clears his throat and then says knockout to show that he had the mic taken and then gets it back to really announce the win
According to the art book mangostein,( the 8-ball in the king dice fight) is supposed to be in the astral plane
I really like the turn that this channel is taking. Pogo is basically the type of yt channel who has the CHILL definition written on its face. I love just siting on the sofa and just watching an awesome video. You cover some of my favorite games of all time! So Pogobro thank you🤗

Mortimer's startup animation actually went a step further that makes it an S tier for me, and that's that while they could have just animated him leaving his throne, he instead decides to swoop beneath the pointed archway, accidentally knocking his hat to the ground where he promptly picks it up and uses his extending legs to get himself back into the air more quickly. It's honestly one of the smoothest startup animations in the game, IMO, and I love looking further into the more finite details like Mortimer accidentally dropping his hat at the start of the fight!..
Also, Esther's phase 1 animation doesn't get enough love, because you'll notice how she starts out on the second floor of the saloon, with the wanted poster covering the first story window, but once she transitions to being on the first floor, the first time she does so it causes the wanted poster to fly off of the building and past the player for a brief moment. It's a really nice little detail that my sister actually called out while we were playing!
6:59 This officially proves my theory that (almost) all the transforming bosses have been put under some sort of curse by the Devil. Just think, Ribby and Croaks fusing into a slot machine, Hilda Berg turning into a huge crescent moon and Esther turning into frankfurters while still being alive and conscious! There has to be some black magic involved!😉

Honestly I think the secret boss fight would happen is that when you go to the devil crying there will be another knock out phase where his skin probably melts off or something like that and the area changes

You know what just clicked. In phase one for chef saltbacker. Hes staring at the player. Its deliberate to cause in phase two he look down at the character(s). We know for a fact chef saltbacker has a mild control of the astral plane. What if the astral plane is something like dc's overvoid.

Something I love about the Saltbaker fight is that when he snaps his fingers in the second phase, you can actually see afterwards that he has a big chip in his finger because it's made of glass, and the force of a finger snap would damage it!
Glumstone swallowing you was the biggest surprise for me when I first played the DLC! And also Esther turning into sausages.🤣

The devil changing to a phase that goes much faster and is much harder by jumping into a hole as his skin is sooo cool. (Idk how he became a red thing)

Here's what I think how the Devil fight would've gone: You would fight the Devil in his throne room when he becomes his skeleton form. Jumping down would greet us with the secret Angel and Devil fight but with a different background and death quote. The skeleton is in the same stance the Devil was for the cut transition phase. So I think that the Devil would regenerate his skin back, and do the cut transition phase into his last 3. They might've cut this because it would've had too many phases. He would've had 5. If they went through with it though, then both the Devil and Djimmi the Great would be tied for the most amount of phases.

I found a 3rd knockout animation, It's basically the same as the secret stage, but the puppies don't appear.
I just think that was an interesting touch

I think the reason why the angel and devil act the way they do at the end is because they know what it means
The devil is afraid because it is now separate from the angel/it's good side, Allowing it to have the ability to do anything, and it's scared because it doesn't want that restraint back on
The angel is acceptance because it knows it's about to be latched onto an evil spirit for the rest of time, but understands that it's the only thing keeping the True devil from raising literal hell, so it prays that it can help it better. It's role is like Zelda against calamity Ganon, as she's the only one keeping it sealed
