Hotel Transylvania is an interesting franchise. Sometimes, I love the characters and the world. But boy does the franchise try to run them into the ground with the most basic of plotlines and a questionably animation style. So instead of harking on the tragedies of the later sequels, let's look back today on the spark that started it all. After all, I have quite a soft spot for the first movie. This is The Scene That Changed Hotel Transylvania 1...

I do miss THIS Johnny, where he's adventurous, is interested in learning and traveling. And that he and Drac have a genuine respect for each other and their different points of view. They shared a somber moment, but actually listened to each other. It's what's sorely missing from all the other films.

"The Legend is wrong." God. DAMN.
The fact that ADAM SANDLER was able to pull off such a heartwrenching delivery just still blows my mind. It's hands down his best performance. This scene is incredible and why animation can do things only live action could dream of. The shadows, the lighting, the composition. It all comes together to create one of the best scenes in Hotel Transylvania.
And I love how he says "you're one of the good ones." Just. Soft. Quiet. In that moment he was not some legendary centuries old creature of myth but...a father learning something new about a world he didn't really live in.

Okay, I just wanted to make mention of this because I didn't see anyone else talk of it, but Johnny was high when he found the hotel. You can see it in his posture, calm behavior, and how casually he talks in the first few scenes despite being yanked around the lobby at Mach 5 by Dracula. It's also why he didn't think about how weird it was to see flaming guys in a town walking into a strange underground tunnel and just kept taking photos like normal, he was positively zooted. I remember my parents mentioning this when we first watched this movie, as they had a few stoner neighbors. Unfortunately it seems that he went from stoner to stupid in the later films, oh well I guess.

In the first film, Johnny is actually pretty accurate to his book counterpart Johnathan Harker. If you read Dracula, before he realizes the danger he’s in, Johnathan is almost overly cheerful and very interested in the culture of Transylvania. He literally gushes over the food he eats on his way to Dracula’s castle, and even gets the recipe so he can introduce his fiancée Mina to it once he goes home. I’ve heard people blame Adam Sandler for making Hotel Transylvania nothing more than a simple comedy, and if that is the case it’s a bit of a shame. I would’ve loved to see what Genndy Tartakovsky would’ve made of the film.

But they had no knowledge on who exactly killed her, just that she was killed by a vampire. @@okvulpine I wouldn't say it would villainise monsters. More like give the idea that no matter what side your on you will always have individuals from either group who are just as much susceptible to being a selfish and evil prick as anyone else. Like when Drac asked Johnny if "just because more humans became more accepting of monsters, could you really tell me that their aren't any humans that will never accept them?" a rebuttal of that would be "just because you say that most monsters aren't evil, could you really tell me that their weren't any monsters who actually did something that gave humans a legitimate reason to fear them?" In HT 2 Drac said that his dad used to steal people's souls with Bella and the other giant bats. That sounds like a pretty legitimate reason for someone to fear monsters if you ask me. It's more the idea that humans and monsters aren't really so different from each other, in terms that both sides are capable of having self interested individuals who can be down right evil and deserving of the title "monster."

A High-Budget Saturday Morning Cartoon and honestly with how 90% of most animated movies tend to just feel like they are trying to capture real life in how characters move and such, its just so refreshing to see films like Hotel Transylvania that actually embrace the fact that it's animated and so the things would impossible to do in Live-Action.

Exactly. This is what I hated about the 2nd movie. They end the first one implying Johnny and Mavis would be exploring the world and finding adventure together before settling down somewhere or maybe back at the Hotel and eventually have a kid after a few years. The 2nd movie immediately rushed them into a marriage and then spent 5 years at the hotel raising Dennis. The 1st movie is the only cannon one in my opinion.

I stopped watching the franchise after seeing Hotel Transylvania 2, because I was pretty disappointed at how much they dropped Johnny's character in the 2nd film. I LOVE the first film because of Johnny's character, and how his relationship with Dracula develops as they learn more about one another. Johnny is goofy yes but he's also empathetic, worldly, humble, kind, and human. I was really hoping we'd see more of his character be fleshed out in the 2nd movie, some conflict as his son comes into his vampire nature leaving Johnny as the only human and odd one out or something. I think I will stick to just watching the first movie and leaving the characters there instead of watching the others.

    • @memecliparchives2254
      @memecliparchives2254 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

In the second half of your point, the 4th movie does do that but in the worst cheesy way possible.
And in the 2nd movie, my gripes is not actually with Johnny but with Mavis. Its like she never had a mother who was brutally murdered by humans and she played it for laughs to impress Johnny's family......for what?
By contrast, Johnny's desire to further stay in the hotel and take Drac's side when it comes to raising Dennis is actually brilliant. It actually plays off that even Johnny himself at times hates what would most consider standard human things or the lot. He's an adventurous happy go lucky laid back traveler and the Hotel allows him to be that, so of course he would cherish it.
In fact, my favorite moment in the 2nd movie is that when he briefly clashes with Mavis as she realizes Johnny also wants Dennis to be raised more like what Drac prefers.
I wish in the 3rd movie though, Drac and Johnny both face their respective yet their intertwined conflicts of being a monster and a human. Its like combine the 3rd and 4th movie but better. Lets say Drac briefly is infatuated with Erika on the vacation trip while Johnny also gets on the trip because he apparently heard a legend or an artifact that can turn a human into a monster or vice versa or something like that of a plot. The others except Mavis get into both of Drac and Johnny's quests here and it just goes from there.
Except Drac doesn't fall in love with Erika but finds peace in letting go of conflict with her family. Johnny then also realizes that it's okay with being a human and like that.
I'll just elaborate further on another comment if anyone is interested.

This is an anime, and I haven't seen you review anime before, but this REALLY gives you a feeling of something else. It's for a clever and witty mind, someone who enjoys being at the edge of their seat from just unsettlement and nervousness and is ready to have both their brain and their heart torn apart. On top of just the writing of the plot, it's brilliantly set up along the visuals, sound- and music-composition, characters and world-building. And, my personal favorite aspect of the series; realism. And no, not the typical brutal, gorey and noisy realism of anime. But mere uncertainty of not knowing if the outside has any safe places to land. It's a series I find having quality unlike any other show I've ever seen!

Honestly, I feel like Marshall's story could've also been expanded upon as well; Marshall being the name of the "Suits of Armor".
Where'd he come from, exactly? And how did Dracula manage to escape an angry mob that was able to sneak in through the back to kill Martha?
What I theorize is that Marshall was a knight hired by Dracula (because he's a Count, after all, and had the ability to legally do so), and perhaps even a human that held more honor than the commoners, and who might've also been hired to take care of Mavis while she was still a baby.
Perhaps he was the one holding Mavis when Martha was attacked, thus why Mavis wasn't killed when Martha was attacked. And then, as Dracula ran to her after she screamed, Marshall could've been the one to pass Mavis over to Dracula, and take up arms in a final moment to protect his liege, and cover their escape.
This would, eventually, explain why Marshall is Dracula's choice of "Guardian" for the castle, and why he's a seasoned soldier that speaks in honorifics like "Sir" or "Milord". Could also explain why, after 118 years without getting paid, he still remains loyal to this day.
And before someone says that Dracula could just be using him with his "Possession" powers, if a simple contact lens can block that ability, it should go without saying that being a ghost at that point (as in, completely lacking eyes to even look into) would make him practically immune to it.
But that, of course, is just a theory I had. Sadly though, it seems to be one of those mysteries that are likely never to be explained.

    • @hunterolaughlin
      @hunterolaughlin ปีที่แล้ว +3

I’m usually not someone who believes in fan theories, but I’m not gonna lie, yours is actually really good and one of the few I can see legit logic behind. It would make sense considering Marshall and the other knights were probably the ONLY ones aside from Dracula that were aware of Johnny’s true identity considering Marshall was in Drac’s room when he was with Johnny and observing the conversation and him trying to get rid of him when he turned into a bat and grabbed onto Johnny to fly him out of the room before Mavis unexpectedly showed up and later on Dracula commanded him to rescue Johnny from Quasimodo and the only ones who weren’t mad at Dracula like the other monsters when Johnny’s disguise was given away. Plus, during the party when Mavis kisses Johnny, it was Marshall that alerted this to Dracula, which meant he also was probably aware of the romantic connection Johnny shared with his master’s daughter.

To be frank, having the second movie was okay. It didn't have this particular moment in it, but it did hit home with helping Dracula get over the idea of loneliness and sort of wrap up the last of his fears to fully accept humans and spread the idea around, especially to his own father.
The third and fourth are overblown in my taste. Especially the fourth. While Drac had to move on from mourning over Martha in the third movie, it was a little controversial for him to "zing" twice.
And then, the fourth movie just didn't have any of the original Hotel Transylvania vibe in it. It focused around, yet again, Dracula coming to terms with Johnny, and sort of put Mavis and (Hellsing's granddaughter, I forgot her name) off to the side only to be used as the strong females who have to save their idiot husbands which is an overused trope of characters that completely disregards the lead female protagonist's personality and background. Now, Mavis isn't the center of the plot, she's the finishing touch.
At least in HT2 she had a lot of personality, personal struggles, and the story still centered with her: adding in Denis as the focal point. With the original, you got to see a lot of character from all of the characters. Now, they've become just a bunch of loopy characters with only the strength of a stick figure female who isn't bending in every direction like a spaghetti noodle to keep them grounded.
I wish they kept more of the vampiristic drama in there like they used for the first movie. While it's good character improvement for Dracula to appear and act more relaxed and playful and less uptight like a soldier all the time, I kinda miss that side to him. I feel that he's gotten too cartoonish for a father that wants to protect his family. By that, I mean I need more stone built sternness when he's angry or disgusted and less noodle arms/legs and melting cape collar.
I mean, at least that's my opinion.

Honestly, we might've not had the same plot going forward if we had the original Johnny in the sequels

To be fair though, I think Drac being concerned about his grandson’s, or “vampson” as he calls him, lack of vampire abilities does feel natural. I mean, even though he’s accepted humans, he is still concerned about keeping the vampire lineage in the family blood, even with a human as his son-in-law. I mean, even though there are other vampires as we see in Camp Winnepacca, so the species isn’t extinct, his bloodline could end with his grandson if he’s a true-blooded human and not a Dhampir and considering how much of a big legacy the Dracula lineage is, that would be something legitimately concerning. I mean, I’m sure we’ve had the feeling of being the last of a long line of descendants with the last name and being concerned with trying to carry the bloodline so it could continue by either marrying or adopting; even if they’re not of the same family blood, it’s still one attempt many would try to preserve the family lineage. So I don’t think it’s an issue in the second film.

@@hunterolaughlin While I agree with what you say, I'm not referring to Dracula's arc. my point is that the first movie's chill but world-wise Johnny might've changed certain aspects of the later films. I think M1 Johnny would've supported Mavis in showing Dennis the outside world and wouldn't have gone along with Dracs plan so quickly (which was something I REALLY didn't like in the second movie)
I feel there were some opportunities and potential missed with johnny
