    I have 2 steamers. One steamer has a temperature and steam blower setting control. When I use the other steamer which basically blows hard and hot steam, I use a sterile face towel between the steamers opening and my mouth. It works just as well but the towel should be changed and air dried once it starts to become wet enough to make your lips hot. Then simply change face towels. I agree with the poster, I'm just letting folks who cannot afford the more expensive one with control settings or already have the one setting type. Good singing and healthy vocals to everyone. Cheers!

      thanks for mentioning that towel tip! that is definitely a tried and true method. before steamers, people used to boil water and put their face over the bowl. a towel is definitely useful with that method too to prevent the heat from being damaging.

    between Nebulizer and steaming which one is the best for singer that got Nasal allergy, and runny nose?

    • @MikaylaFeldman
      @MikaylaFeldman  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      both would probably be helpful. Nebulizer is best for hydration, but steaming will help at least clear up the sinuses temporarily. People with allergies sometimes prefer using a Neti Pot or something similar, but consult your doctor for the most accurate advice!

    just a question what temperature you think I should set the mypure to if I want to record shortly after ?

  • @amogrows

    being hydrated won't necessarily reduce hoarseness, right?

    • @MikaylaFeldman
      @MikaylaFeldman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can definitely help! It depends on the reason for the hoarseness, but hydration is really important for healthy vocal folds.

    In terms of the inflamed vocal chords due to the exposure to high temperatures, would the same be true for drinking hot tea while singing? Or is it mainly when there is direct exposure of high temperatures to the vocal chords?

    • @MikaylaFeldman
      @MikaylaFeldman  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question. Because tea goes down your esophagus, it won’t touch your vocal folds and definitely won’t have quite the same negative effect as hot steam. That said, if it’s very hot, it can still affect other tissues in the mouth and throat and cause inflammation. A lot of vocal health professionals will recommend room temperature, but I would say figure out what affects you. Scalding hot is not recommended, but warm probably isn’t bad. I would just want to make sure the tea itself isn’t dehydrating (check what is inside of it). Experiment a little and figure out what affects you! Everyone is different.

      @@MikaylaFeldman thanks for the quick response! I've found drinking warm tea (usually green tea, or with ginger) that it's easier to sing, but it can make my voice sound gunky shortly after drinking which fades away after 10-15 minutes. Was just wondering if that was a symptom of inflammation (mouth, throat, anything).

    My daughter has allergies but is also a singer...any tips for keeping the mucus off her cords?

    • @MikaylaFeldman
      @MikaylaFeldman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Steaming is definitely going to be one good way to thin out the thick mucus, but beyond that extra hydration is really going to be key! She may just need to drink more water than the average person to compensate for the extra mucus that her body produces as a result of allergies. You'll also want to check to see if any allergy medication she takes has a side effect of dryness. I cover this briefly in Ep. 018; sometimes there are alternatives you can talk to your doctor about that are a little less drying!

      @@MikaylaFeldman thank you for the reply! She has been on allergy medication in the past, but honestly not much works. It’s just chronic allergies where we live (central CA). She drinks a ton of water, always has her hydro flask with her☺️ She has thickening of her cords, was thinking it may be from her chronic allergies😞 Or just lack of technique. She’s also growing. 16. We just had a scope!

      @@abrisc24 That's tough! Take a look at the video on lifestyle factors (Ep. 018) and think about whether any of those factors might apply. Acid reflux is another possibility, which I talk about a bit in Ep. 021. One thing you'll want to pay attention to is if the thick mucus seems to be worse during and after singing. If she doesn't sing/talk much for a couple days and then sings for a short while, does it feel better (at least initially)? If that is the case, then it could be technique-related. She may simply be putting too much pressure on the voice - especially if she's singing a lot in chest dominant vocal styles. The body produces extra mucus as part of the vocal folds' healing mechanism. Check out Ep. 022 on Vocal Misuse & Overuse and see if maybe any of that applies! If she's not already studying with a teacher that will help her develop her technique, that is definitely going to be key :)

      @@MikaylaFeldman it’s crazy because she’s not a Belter at all, she has an incredible mix, and so she mostly sings in her upper/head voice and mix voice. She doesn’t have a ton of mucus, if she does it’s seasonal, but she sings a lot. So I’m wondering if it’s just how she’s been singing. Or if it’s just her? She’s been told she has damage, but her scope on Thursday says otherwise. Healthy cords, no nodes or polyps, no tears, just “slight thickening” in the center he said. He showed us...in the front there is a slight gap; they don’t close all way in her high notes. He said it’s curable😊 I was just curious if it was her allergies that may have contributed.

    • @MikaylaFeldman
      @MikaylaFeldman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@abrisc24 Sounds like she's doing all the right things! She may just be singing a lot, as you said! Talking can also be a factor, depending on how much and in what way she's talking. But I think she's doing all the things she can to mitigate the effect of allergies :) Healthy cords is great! The opinions of a few different teachers might be helpful to discover if there's anything she's doing in her higher register that could be causing some inflammation, and of course the doctor will know best regarding any vocal rest or other recommendations that could help. Best of luck to you both, sounds like she has a wonderful singing future!

    Water itself just does not work you also need fresh fruits and vegetables that have moisture in them and also physically exercise

    What was the point in this video of your not going to tell us what steamer your using? 🙄

    • @edwardanderson6072
      @edwardanderson6072 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the exact same one she's showing off and on. She's using a ( "Vicks" steamer " ) she forgot to mention that although the Vicks steamer is cheaper, it does actually have a steamer control on each side of it, so......??? Not sure why she forgot this important info. Happy singing y'all!!!

      I'm looking into clearing up my bronchial
      air track before singing, after 15 mins of singing
      I start to get a bit of a phlegm attack gunking up
      my chords.I guess that she
      uses a 'vicks' steamer as mentioned by edward,
      A steamer may or may work for
      hard to say, I'm looking into neblulizers
      and steamers, some say that a steamer will
      or can damage the voice, I would guess they're ok
      with moderate use though. A lot of people recommend
      a couple drops of either eucalyptus essential oils,
      or peppermint drops in nebulizers or steamers, either.
      Good luck , let people know what you find works for you.
