We in the Bundeswehr service always wondered why they didnt develop versions with different caliber for higher range. The gepard never was obsolete, they only wanted to minimize the Bundeswehr strenght. Drones were all time visible in futures scenarios and helicopters are the classic target. Neither helis nor transport aircraft can pass some gepards.
They stopped the gepard, because there was an succesor in sight. So they said we dont invest 10 year in gepards, since it is becoming an outdated technology. In case of ermergency is would have been possible tobhet them ready again pretty fast, but overall there was that high risk that something happens
The video is missing one very interesting fact ... the Gepard is also able to damage any main battle tank in the world on up to 2 kilometers, not destroying the tank itself but crippling it by destroying all optics, antennas, sensors and even the chains with its 35mm grenades. The tank won´t be destroyed totally but you can probably scrap it afterwards. Also the Gepard radar is a passive one which can find its target without getting found itself. Gepard is a hell of an enemy for everything lesser armored than a mbt. Obviously the Gepard is my favourite tank ^^ and sadly far to early sorted out by german army for that new shitty mantis system.
Germany has dismantled its military over decades because there was no danger, but now they want to rearm. The Bundeswehr may be weak, but when it comes to tanks and inventions they are one of the best in the world.
Germany was pressed by the US who fear not at stronger german nation, but a strong united Europe. For what reason do you think the US military never withdraw from that continent?
Talking about engineering: the Gepard has an extra power plant to supply the power hungry rapidly rotating turret plus the gunner is placed in the rotational axis of the turret, so he is not exposed to the extreme centrifugal forces of the rapidly rotating turret.
When I was growing up I loved the Gepard just for its looks - I did not know much about tanks then, and thought it was the best tank actually :D With its unique turret design it looked like the Darth Vader from star wars. I am so thrilled now because its relevant again. I am sure the design and manufacturing style might be obsolete , so I hope to see a new lethal Gepard in future maybe because this has certainly become the monster for drones.
I was a driver of a Gepard in the late 90's. The look is great and so is the sound. It was a great feeling to drive through the terrain at over 60 km/h.
The computing system uses the same CPU used in the Amiga 500 home computer from 1985. Not that this is a bad thing. It does it's job. However it is outdated. The replacement has already existed for a while. Rheinmetall Sky Ranger
One correction. Almost zero missles or drones from ruZZia have been "aimed at ukranian forces" as you stated... They are predominantly used against civilian targets. Over 300 hospitals, shopping centers, preschools, train stations and such. Its rare they use them against ukranian forces...
That's a conversation with my friends I have had. Ukraine is fighting the Russian military. Russia is mainly fighting Ukrainian civilians... under the mistaken belief that they can still shell the Ukrainians into surrendering.
From what I can tell, they use only two bursts of 2x3 rounds per target in Ukraine. That's more than enough for a Shahed drone. There has been an ammunition shortage since the system has been out of service in Germany for years and the Swiss refused to export the ammo to Ukraine. Germany is now producing new rounds without the Swiss.
The Swiss are cowards here (Not generally, but here). They don't want to upset russian cleptocrats hiding the wealth of the russian people in private bank accounts in Switzerland.
Switzerland was not simply "refusing" it. The company was not allowed by law to export any ammo to a country in an active war. That's what the swiss people voted for years before the conflict started. It would have been highly illegal!
Skyranger is just the weapon system - it is based on the Oerlikon KDG, which is basically the revolver cannon variant of the Oerlikon KDA used in the Gepard - the rate of fire is around the same (1 KDG = 2 KDA), the calibre and the ammunition is the same the Leopard 1 base is a bit outdated, that is why skyranger is intended to be fittet onto Boxer oder Lynx (so IFVs) as a plattform
@matovicmmilan don't be, radars could detect shells in the 60's but the trouble was to get the targeting systems good and fast enough. The American C-RAM was to my knowledge the first that actively intercepts shells. It's just calculating the ballistic trajectory and draws a line of lead in the sky. Modern systems are even more capable and only need short bursts with programmed shells.
Mostly a computer issue. I would prefer a Gepard retrofit. Gepard A+1 for the win! ;) I prefer tracked vehicles when shit is about to hit the fan. Wheeled chassis is nice and all... but no comparison to tracks.
I've had the weird pleasure of standing beside the "Cheetah PRTL" (or as we would call it the "Pruttel") during a shooting exercise. We, four small army platoons, armed with a couple FN MAG's on stands, shooting 7.62mm NATO rounds at a target being dragged by a remote controlled airplane. Little did we know the "Pruttel" was around the corner, ready to roll up to it's shooting position right next to us... unleashing it's massive rounds towards that same flag-like target. The sheer power of those 35mm cannons is as impressive as it is frightening.
I think we can learn for future wars from this. I don´t think future anti-drone systems will need 35mm canons. Smaller ones on a more mobile truck. basically it is all about the radar, laser rangefinder and computers.
@@RustyBeargo Reddit combat footage, there a dozen of videos how the drones hit soft military targets from the Ukraine armed forces, like drones or anti missile systems
Meant for planes that had no idea they were being tracked, just as planes developed counter measures against this threat. Now it serves the exact purpose but only on smaller planes. Luckily it is accurate enough to hit them reliably enough.
If there were more valleys or forrestes in Ukraine the Gepard would be much more dominant since choppers/aircrafts have to come closer since it effective max range is around 5km. On the other side as some commander told about manual targeting ground targets. " You do not have to aim much higher" (Those rounds go 1400m/s) With its radar it can still coordinate other air defence at 15km+ around itself.Last autuum some Gepards joined the charkiv breakthroug and took enemy drones and vision so many russians were fleeing thinking to be already surrounded, since small ukrainian forces were far in the hinterland taking pictures in front of local signs. And russian command had lost the overview. If they have gotten more logisitics and western material last year, they could have liberated much more territory.
Link its radar into something like the Supacat HMT based ASRAAM setup and helis or even jets won't get close. Though some advanced jets have the ability to map and target stuff like that at ranges in excess of 60km potentially requiring coverage from more advanced air-defences as well but that is another story.
Damned! A top system had to be 50 years old and retired until it had to prove and could prove how good it was. Can we please produce many new Gepards now? Simply build a lot of Gepards quickly and don't develop something in new. Gepard-turret on Leo2 chassis?

combine that with a couple of JASDF VADS or Centurion C-RAM and that is a lot of lead being thrown at drones and rockets, be pretty hard to effectively strike an airbase or migs with those on sentry duty.
if you have enough ammo, they will deliver only 40 000 rounds by the end of year, at a rate of 1000 rounds per minute, how long will the ammo last? Remember Nato always complain the Ukrainians are using way more ammo than they should. 40 minutes of combat? Add to that the fact that rusky are sending fake drones as well to drain air defence.
cost effective? at over $600 a pop off the factory? add to that the cost of transpoting it to the front line. That makes one salvo cost more than a drone from far. Not to mentioned the rusky are often sending fake drones to deplete air defence.
The Dutch version is named PRTL (Pantser Rups Tegen Luchtdoel). Too bad we sold them all back then, hopefully they can still make their way to Ukraine.
Gepard was built as mobile AA gun systems working together with Leopard main battle tanks, use the same heavy vehicle. Other mobile systems were build at that time, using wheeled rather than tracked vehicles, less expensive but hardly bought by armed forces. Preference then was given to "fire-and-forget" systems for fighting aircrafts - missiles that turn out now to be too expensive for destroying small, relatively slow drones. Even the towed AA guns - the same as used by Gepard - could be well used in Ukraine (as for example bought by Canadian Armed Forces for defending their airports in Germany some 40 years ago from their manufacturer in Switzerland). If only the b-o-i in Swiss government and parliament would not continue to block transfer of such weapon systems to Ukraine.
Correct they where build to escort squadrons of leopard tanks and protect them from air threats . At the time the dutch had 95 of them . Plus 400 leopard 1 and 400 leopard 2 tanks . the dutch version was also a test bed tof the CIWS Goalkeeper . One of the top close in weapon systems.

Initially there was a shortage of ammunition for the Gepard, because it was made by the Swiss, and they wouldn't export it. So Ukrainian operators had to be sparing in using ammo. In an interview, one Ukrainian said that they could usually bring down a drone with 3 rounds.
Kit like this and Patriot are great, and there is a place for them in defending high value targets, but they are hugely expensive 'Hammers' being used to crack the Cheap Drone 'Nut'. What we need are some sort of cheap, disposable anti-drone Drones, that can loiter above a likely target, and then drop down (like a mini-JDam) to intercept incoming drones, so that each attacking drone can be shot down for a few hundred or thousands of dollars, rather than hundreds of thousands, or even millions, in the case of some missiles.
I really cannot understand why the German MOD has shut down the Bundeswehr's amoured AA tank capabilities! It might be true that the version of the Gepard we know here is outdated in some ways, but this system never got an update, unlike the Leopard2, which is now available as A7+ or A7V urban warfare versions!
When you compare it with the new Skyranger systems, you will understand. Same fire rate but needs only one barrel. The new system is also far more versatile.

We call him in the 1990 Century " God of Hellfire" in German Army. In my Eyes is this the best Anti Aircraft Gun Sytem at Earth.
With the advent of drones, lots of countries are now really eager for Gepards

Yep, you’re right 👍
The Swiss are cowards here (Not generally, but here).

Gepard is a quite old system. The successor is sky ranger or other systems based on that. They can even intercept incoming shells 😊
There's also the SkyNex by Rheinmetall, that's also an insane system.
And not to forget the angriest R2D2 ever, the CWIS/CRAM.
I can't help being a bit skeptical about any available system's ability to intercept incoming shells?
Skyranger is just the weapon system - it is based on the Oerlikon KDG, which is basically the revolver cannon variant of the Oerlikon KDA used in the Gepard - the rate of fire is around the same (1 KDG = 2 KDA), the calibre and the ammunition is the same
the Leopard 1 base is a bit outdated, that is why skyranger is intended to be fittet onto Boxer oder Lynx (so IFVs) as a plattform
Gepard A+1 for the win! ;)
I prefer tracked vehicles when shit is about to hit the fan. Wheeled chassis is nice and all... but no comparison to tracks.

Great video but, as a suggestion, could you please use metric measurements? e.g. range in metres/km, etc.

Its big ass AA gun, if the North Calorina & Iowa class, earned a rep in WW II it was the Clear Sky Award,
Gepard was built as mobile AA gun systems working together with Leopard main battle tanks, use the same heavy vehicle.

That thing is so good!
