You can get rid of the drone by adding a correct length helmholz resonator pipe to the exhaust. It's simply a piece of same bore pipe at a certain length with a capped off flat end, it bounces back the drone sound waves against each other so they cancel each other out. Easy for a exhaust shop to fab you and no performance loss.

that hissing or weird sound when slowing down is true. mine does that same. i always wonder if this is louder or as loud as valved exhausts or carnewel exhaust.... :/

Great vid Will.I have the design tec version, and you are right, it does seem to be exactly the same as yours apart from that gurgling sound you refer to on your version, I don’t have that sound. I’ve seen vids where people have fitted motor bike silencers in the two exhaust out pipes to reduce the drone between two and three thousand revs, be interesting to know if that actually does anything. Apart from that the throttle response and apparently about 20 extra horsepower seems to have been the result of putting it on my car, so I can live with a bit of drone between that rev range. Cheers

Thanks for watching Jeffrey. I will look into the silencers. For the kind of driving i do I dont realy mind a bit of drone. For the money I dont think you can get better. I may look into a valved system at some point but who knows :)

Thank for watching Harry. I am currently looking for a valved exhaust as I find this one a bit much for daily driving. You have made a good call getting the valves.

Hi Will. I have exactly the same problem with my 987 with the Toyo sport exhaust. What I did is buy a pair of DB Killers, the ones they use for bikes and that you can buy in many places.
With the DB Killers the drone disappears completely. I know the exhaust doesn’t sound as good that with ought the DB Killers. I where them when I know I’m going to drive long time in highways. It takes you less than 5 min to install them.

Thanks Marc. I will look at getting a few. They look pretty cheap. Hopefully then I'll be ready for a road trip.

My droney Toyosport also does this "sucking" sound on overrun, only happens when injectors are off but I can't understand why

Will I've just found your channel, having collected a Gen 2 Boxster S a couple of weeks ago.
My car had a new Design Tek valvetronic exhaust fitted in May this year by the previous owner. Even though it has valves, it's loud on start up in my garage, although it does settle quickly (shame the default couldn't be valves closed on start up).
I'm going to cost the price of reverting back to stock, and may do that if I can find a standard 987.2 exhaust.
In the meantime, I'll evaluate the design tek over the next few months and see whether I warm to it.
Hopefully catch up with you at the local PCGB events as I have just joined R31 region.
    Dave

I have the Spyder performance version of this (I am assuming it is similar if not the same backbox), but I have the valved version. To be honest it's fine in 'closed' valve mode but way too loud in 'open' mode in my opinion. It frightens you in a tunnel it's that loud.
The one other thing I'm not sure about is how far the tips stick out from the bumper, and how 'wonky' the tips appear to be (mine almost 'splay out' from the exhaust). Yours appears to be similar - a set of genuine sports tips might be the sweet spot and look much better in my opinion.
I am happy with it? Sort of. It does open up the flow of the car a bit, and genuinely feels less 'asthmatic' at the top end but I would struggle to recommend it to someone who just wants a slightly nicer sound - the Carnewal mod seems popular but that's no good if your original exhaust is trash of course!
When I had my MX-5, I could spend £200 or so and swap the backbox over, but £800-1000 is a lot more money to spend and make a mistake. Do I wish i'd spent a bit more and got something else? Yep!

Thanks for watching. Interesting to hear about the Spyder exhaust as i am considering selling this one and swapping to something valved. Hearing the sound on TH-cam vs real life is totaly different so i may have to find someone who has one to see if its right for me. For the time being i will stick with this. It seems that most aftermarket exhausts for the 987 drone alot.

Appreciate this, exactly what I was looking for.
I was demo'd your kit for my 987.2 recently, whilst I was at a specialist. I was outside the car and when he started it and I jumped (valves are open on start before engine vacuum closes them), how loud it was caught me by surprise. When he rev'd it, with the valves open, it hurt my ears and I had to cover them and this put me off.
I too wasn't a fan of the tips; the one's on the demo car also looked wonky! My PSE tips look so much nicer (despite the fact I've dented them and that's why I'm looking whether to fit new exhaust system or just replace tips, hehehe).
It's been a few days now and I had a thought; the demo car was parked in a very enclosed space, with walls / cars surrounding it so maybe that's why it was so loud (as you've suggested it was almost like it was in a tunnel). So today I set out to research and answer; a. is it v. loud and b. can you get different tips. From the videos I've seen plus this comment I'm going to give it a miss so thank you! Back to the original plan of SOUL!

@@bigsluggy Thanks for watching. If you have the budget i would spend a bit more. Not sure if i can recomend this exhaust. I may look at a valved system but I would need to hear one first.

I don’t like the aesthetic and the drone sound of the desigtek exhaust, I fitted a Design 911 x-pipe carbon black that looks the business with a slight sound enhancement over the standard Porsche exhaust, just by the size of a bees dick, it’s more for looks than sound. Bar an valve exhaust you are better off with a Design 911 xpipe for £270 ish and keep the rest in the bank. Just IMO.
