Porsche 911 vs Boxster Comparison 997 vs 987 (Did I Buy the Right Car)?!
In this video I met up with @willscars to compare our porsches. He has brought his 997 Carrera S to compare with my 987 Boxster S. I look to see if a Boxster is a bargain porsche or if I should have spent the extra money on a 911.

My boxster hasnt been starting properly and in some cases hasnt started leaving me in need of jumping the car to get the bonet open. This has been caused by a bad earth wire and results in a slow crank when doing a hot start. How To Fix The Roof Elastics for £2 On My 987 Boxster S!
Is this the gen2 with the better ims ?
911 is way better than the boxster. 100%..
I tried one of these cheap ebay shifters on my 986, and the action was just too shift and not precise at all, so removed it. What I did do was to use the aluminium cups and plastic bushes of the ebay kit and use these on the original shifter. Just had to reduce the parts that inserts into the bushes on the original, so that they fitted, and slid freely. This modification has definitely removed all the sloppiness that was in place with the worn original bushes, although the original long throw of the gear change still remains.
I think the 987 is the prettier machine.
Triffic guide. Thanks for the info.
You do realise you just needed to tap that in further with a rubber mallet 😂 the washers are in for you to tighten that grub screw against to stop the cowards and back play!
You just need to fit the upgrade Alex does on the 911 forum that will fix the issues he replaces the bushing with some machined copper bushing 🎉 he uses the Chinese cheap shifter and modified it
It's still not an upgrade. You have not replaced all of the plastic parts. Numeric is worth the money until someone makes something less expensive with the same quality.
Really helpful video, think I may have a failed coolant housing also, what were your symptoms, I’m getting white smoke coming from that side of the car, coming out side intake and over wheel arch. Think I can see drops of water under the car
Superb video. I’ve learned now how to do it 🙏👍
Intake on the left grille and engine bay cooling on the right for the boxter, just saying!
Thanks mate I was never sure which way round it is😂
Put a trickle charger on it.
Before I bought my 987.2 Cayman, I test drove a 981.1 Cayman. In comparison, I didn't like the 981 at all. I can't explain it, but it simply didn't drive as well. There was less "feel", for lack of a better explanation.
Just buy what you like and what you can afford, simples
I tried both 997 & 981 cayman S …. Personally 981 won it for me, more modern, better looking imo.
Should have bought a cayman.
I need to move my 987.1 Cayman S for a 997.1 for the rear seats. Not for adults but for my kids. Shame they are £10k more on average like for like.
Theyre the same car from the doors forward.. the boxster is not smaller
It took me a second to realize that crunching sound was the windshield wipers. Lol.
haha yes they were quite loud😂 One of the joys of filming this time of year is that its always raining
Here is an interesting video for anyone wondering what the difference is between a Cayman/Boxster and a 911.. You'll be surprised how similar they are.. See here: th-cam.com/video/z8RDTsr9POA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=G7y7mzG1FZVC7KOM
Had both. 996 C4S and ,986/987 2.7s the biggest difference is a 2.7 just works. 3.6 will need a rebuild. A widebody is worth it for looks alone but if want to just drive your Porsche. There is only one choice from that era.
Not all 3.6 996 cars will need a rebuild, mine is on over 200k miles now and still has un scored bores, plenty of oil changes mind.
997 every time for me . I have had both and the sold rigid 997 wins , I also had convertible 996 I honestly can’t put up with the irritation of the odd squeak and rattle of the roof 😂
981 upped the ridgity and updated everything
Interesting that the 911 and Boxster are so similar, yet so different. I think it speaks volumes for how good we as humans have become at engineering, that subtle differences can feel like big differences to us. It's what makes a great car stand out from a merely good car. That extra few percent, while minor, make a huge difference. Laughing at the proposition of owning a Boxster plus a 911! Maybe it's possible in the UK because you poms have devalued these cars down to the price of an Apple MacBook Pro. You need quite a lot more money to own both in Australia - especially if you want a Carrera S over the standard Carrera. A decent 997 Carrera S and 987 Boxster S in Oz would cost you about one hundred thousand pounds (give or take), combined to buy. That's for .1's too! .2's cost a lot more...
Thanks for watching. Wow they must be realy expensive down there. It might even be worth inporting some if they are that expensive.
@@will_behind_the_wheel Aussie buyers are extremely conservative and an imported UK car will always sell for less than an Australian delivered car unless the UK example is some hyper rare collectible Porsche. Not sure what it is about UK cars. You guys don't want them and Australian's don't want the UK cars either. I hear a lot of it has to do with the salt that is used on the roads in the UK, but Porsches are fully galvanised from the factory, so it shouldn't be such a big factor.
Keep it!
Great video comparison. Enjoyed both channels. Boxster has loads going of it as a weekend/fun car, it sounds more "alive" inside in the videos. 911 is the poster car from many of our childhoods though. Your conclusion is sound - get both!
I have both the 997 + 987. They are both so great that you are blessed to own either one. For long trips up the coast with top down, or weekend getaways the 987's really feel great and not so much road noise from the giant rear wheels in the 911. They just seem to roll down the road effortlessly. The turn in to corners in the 987 is more confident inspiring so people feel more comfortable going fast in the 987 right away. The 911 takes a bit more time, but still very rewarding when you have tamed the beast. The 987 is like a great horse that does everything you ask with no surprises, the 997 still has a bit of that wild horse and that keeps you a bit more on your toes. Both amazing cars and if you have the chance you should own both.
The 987.1 Boxster and Cayman are some of the best 997.1 911’s Porsche has ever made…
Amazing how people often talk about how much 'smaller' or 'lighter' or 'narrower' the Boxster is. The front half of these cars is shared, including the front half of the cabin, the front axle, steering rack, the monocoque structure, the works. Cabin width at the seating position is identical. It's on shared platform with exactly the same sizes / widths. You could take 997 front wings, lights and bumpers and bolt them directly to the 987. You can also fit the 997 dash top to the 987 and vice versa, again, the front half of the cabin is largely shared. Overall weight is only a tiny bit more in the 997. They are mid-rear and rear-rear versions of the same car. Yes, they handle differently due to the weight distribution. But all the stuff about size and weight is mostly imagined due to the market positioning of the cars making people think the 997 is somehow a bigger car. The 997 Carrera is only 7mm wider (at the rear, it's identical width at the front axle) and actually has a much shorter wheelbase.
From my perspective I think it’s mainly due to the space behind you in the 911, having the rear seat area does wonders for making you feel like you’re in a bigger, less claustrophobic car. It is weird how our brains perceive things to be different when, like you say, the dimensions are pretty damn similar!
Fair point, modern 011 are much bigger. A 981 is still 997 like, the 992 is big
@@Jay-xr3sb No, a 981 is 991-like. Literally the front half of the platform is shared and has an identical footprint, the cabin and dash is largely shared (just different dash top halves, bottom half of dash is shared, width between the doors is identical to a 991 etc etc).
Two very different cars that share a lot of the same parts. The 911 is more of a luxury GT car. It's heavier, so it feels more solid and slightly more refined. The boxster/Cayman is a lighter more nimble sports car with great handling. I own both a 987 spyder and a 997 c4s cab from the same year. The 987 is just more fun and easier to enjoy more of the time. The 997 is great and can lift up its skirt and dance when needed, but it is better for motorway long distance runs. I think a lot of people are swayed by the whole status symbol thing and buy a 911 over a Boxster/ Cayman. Even if the latter is more suited to what they are really looking for.
Exactly, the 981 generation bridged the gap, can be a gt or sports car
Have both 911 and 987 and I think having both is a great idea.
Thanks for watching. I think I will look to do that one day
Boxster is a cabriolet. You should compare it to a 911 cabriolet. I have a 981s and tested a 991 cabriolet before choosing the Boxster.
Thanks for watching. That is something that has crossed my mind. I'd love to see what a 911 cab is like
I’ve said this before, it is nigh on impossible to “get” 911’s from a short test drive. With the Boxster or Cayman the car will feel right from the get go; they’ll give you bags of confidence and you’ll be able to chuck the thing around. You can’t with 911’s - you have to figure out the dynamics; the slow in fast out mantra. I’ve got a 997 and love it.
Thanks for watching. I think i might have to spend some more time with one to build up some confidence
So you're driving around it's flawed engine placement, you could say the same about the oversteer of an audi ttrs, which is fine.
I’ve got a Boxster 981 and my son has the cayman 987. I would say definitely the 911 is the better car, but the question you need to ask is what’s the best car for you personally. And in my case it’s the Boxster 981, for agility and the way it looks after you in the corners and finally value for money.
Thanks for watching. That is intresting and maybe a decent comparison of the 981 vs 997
Thanks for having me mate! Hopefully next time we meet up the weather will be on our side 🤣🤙🏼
Thanks for letting me have a go mate. 100% we will do a drive when the sun is out 😂
Before you buy the 911, if you want you can to take my 981S Cayman out Will at the next Cotswolds Tribal….
Thanks mate. I'll have to do a bit of saving up before I can buy anything 😂 I'd love to have a look around yours. Ill see you soon
I own a few Boxsters. I would buy a Cayman over a 911 if I needed a hard top. The rear seat of the 911 isn't important to me. I prefer smaller cars.
Was a cracking day! Great to meet you mate, give you a follow and Sub ✌️ (Black BBS 997 ✌️🏁)
Thanks for watching mate. Was great to meet you, I've been looking at BBS wheels every day since 😂
Apologies Will, only just seen this ! Brilliant. ❤
Thanks for sharing this Martin :) it was a great day. Looking forward to future events
Just a heads up with the Trombone cleaner...be very careful on using it at the front ,on the drain holes under the bonnet, especially the passenger side. I used it on my 1999 Boxster and it pushed the drain fitting out of its housing . Its an absolute nightmare to get it back in position.
Thanks for watching. Ill be careful when using. I used it the other day as i saw it wasnt draining properly and managed to get some soggy leaves out
Add an air pump that plugs into the cig lighter or the TPS will drive you crazy. I also added a battery disconnect switch only to be used when on trickle charger as my garage queen 997 has a parasitic drain (just don’t shut the hood all the way when in use or you’ll have to use the aux battery or hidden cable pull to open the boot). Lastly run an extra emergency pull cable into the front wheel well so you can more easily pull the boot latch open worst case (I ran one for the front and back lids having been stuck with a dead battery and no means to pop the boot latch). Yes the 997 has a front cable pull cable hidden but it’s harder to get to without tools to remove the wheel well covers so I ran cheater cables.
Thanks for watching. I have since bought a tyre pump and use it all the time as i have a slow puncture. Interesting about thefront trunk release as this is something that i find frustrating if the battery ever does fail it will be a good way to get in there.
I would recommend keeping the pull cable behind the cover and just keeping a trim removal tool handy for the clips. I like that getting into the trunk is not so easy for thieves. The slow puncture he mentions in his reply is another thing easily fixed yourself with a lightweight kit. Picture a T-handle punch with an eye to thread through a plug patch. You just spray water with soap on the tire and locate the puncture, mark it with a wax pen. Then thread the plug into the handle and push it through. Pull it back out making sure the tag of the plug stays behind and trim. You can build a kit specific to your car that weighs next to nothing.
Thank you for the video😊
Thanks for watching :)
Great to see you out enjoying your car, mate. Haven't had mine out much lately, looking forward to our club Christmas run and lunch next month.
Thanks for watching :) that will be good to get it out and stretch its legs.
Nice to see the 914, don’t think I’ve ever seen one in the flesh
They are awesome to look at, pretty rare and sound great. I think the values will go up soon
Thanks for awesome video! 😊
Thanks for watching. Its always good fun going to the meets
Are you putting the car on winter tyres?
Not planning on doing it yet. I think ill continue to use it on the current tyres and avoid getting it out if there is any snow this year
Great video, love the genuine enthusiasm.
I just got my 987 back in September, and before I got the one I did, I was looking at Martins who listed his for sale at the same time! (And I was seriously considering his!)
Wow congratulations on getting one. Martins is a very highly maintained car and would have been a good buy. Im sure yours is just as nice
The only tool I ever needed was my cell phone so I could call the local dealership for a service appointment.
Every time you put out a vid, I have to jump in mine. Cheers Will
I have zero confidence in someone giving me Porsche advice who can't properly pronounce the word. It's 2 syllables, dude.
