I think you showed that you totally understand the challenge and the meaning of the word "fantasy." The blade looks terrific, I love the fittings. You nailed it. I'm 1% disappointed that its attached to the handled by 2 cm of thread, but it isn't made for fighting.
I was coming here to say, he had the makings of a perfectly good tang, but cut it off to tap a little screw that is held to the handle by glue. It's pretty and I love the blade, but yeah, definitely a piece of art rather than a functional weapon.
It is a tragedy. Only thing I can imagine is that he was convicted to not go full tang. Who knows why. But likely because he didn’t want to make fully functional weapon of cruelty. And also maybe as a sign of respect to Japanese culture.
another good point to make... this blade is practical and isn't fantasy? it's actually INCREDIBLY efficient at what it does (creating a nearly impossible to seal/clot wound) hence why they're illegal in a lot of places...and if they're illegal... not fantisy?
I knew and old guy who could do that whole guard in like 2-3hrs max. He was insane with a jewelers saw.. he made intricate brass fixtures and furniture for museum quality doll houses.. his family makes recreations of famous landmark buildings and whatnot and he’s been doing that since he was a young boy in the UK.. I have no patience or skill for that and I’d be at it for weeks! I tried something much simpler once and my cuts were caddywhompus, crooked and 32 flavors of messed up. I still have the saw that the old man gifted me but I’ve never used it again. This made me think i should give it another go!

2 things. 1: you obviously put effort into that guard, it looks great. 2: I know its a showpiece, but its really way better to have a tang. I have one for ya.. Based of the square guard.. No blade in the center. Instead you have 4 blades twisting around each other till they meet and connect at the tip. Inside the gap between the 4 blades you could have frosted or etched glass. Make the handle hollow so this glass part can be inserted along with an oil source........ The work is magnificent. I believe that the problem aesthetically is the blade crash with the hilt, the blade is too dark and short, for my view at least. But that doesn't take away from the fantastic work you did on it.
I would imagine making a sheath for that wherein it matches the spiral of the blade so when you holster the Tri-Dagger it does a cool little spin as it falls into the sheath.
This thing isn't like a regular knife. it's designed to pierce tissue, organs and bones and to rip them apart with a circular motion and induce massive bleeding
I've seen many blacksmiths using borax to protect the metal from oxidizing while forging. It produces a lot of what looks like "scale," which is actually mostly the borax. Using it, you're less likely to see rust on your billets.
