Love the design of the damascus, and the handle and your profile, but I'm worried about the structural integrity of the blade. I noticed cracks and a lot of cold shuts. I strenuous testing it would break I'm certain. Should've used more flux and really caked it on. I think a canister would've been better with powdered steel to help really seal up those open spaces in the chain.
I think a Damascus is form over function, like a work of art. It's not meant for utility knives which can put up with terrible abuse while looking at best, well, utilitarian. Each has their place. The Damascus here is probably plenty strong enough for light work (especially after the twisting) but not appropriate for a SEAL to carry on missions or anything.
@@alexanderchapman2525 no. The original damask steels were used for fighting swords and frickin gun barrels. You couldnt possibly be morw wrong. This is just bad craft.
I understand your concern and I was thinking the same thing. However during the forging, he ground away at the blank to remove voids. I think that he was able to make a pretty solid blade considering that he also twisted it. This is not a blade that you take into battle and so I wouldn't really be all that worried about it.
Nicely done.. I get a sense of irony here.. Pun intended lol. Just think what blacksmiths of ancient days would think.. A never before seen technical marvel of a modern motorcycle chain reduced to a bushcrafting knife.
This video shows the artisan and artist in this man. The hand forged tip. The hand grinded scallops and everything else for that matter. The mosaic pin. Beautiful work. Best blade I've ever seen on this channel. Thank you for sharing your craft.
I couldn't agree more. I'm not a forger. But I have a 2 handed 7" angle grinder as well as a 5" 1 handed angle grinder. And when something isn't going your way, a lot of times one of those is your friend. Beautiful beautiful blade pattern by the way.
What is that ? It's really magic ! The MAN , his arms , his knowledge are on the top . Top of the 🎩🎩🎩 . Harry Potter is only the child near the Master 🎉🎉🎉
Wow evidently I am lucky enough to be reading a video post with all these knife making experts, I've learned so much with all the input from metallurgists and, historians alike ,thank you, thank you, YOU KNOWLEDGE MASTERS! Someone please write Theese wheel keelll ! P.S I will be looking for your videos of crappy knives you made LOL
Awesome job man. I would love to see someone make a real traditional damascus knife, sward, dagar, whatever, the original way. No welders, no grinders, no chop saws, no leaf springs, no chains, no this, no that, just good old steel, a furnace and a hammer plus other tools of the trade they used to use. Not saying your work isn't bad ass because it definitely is.
3:17 I suspect all those little voids in the billet were likely caused by the first few heats not being fully hot enough to forge weld ... seemed mostly orange hot instead of warm golden white with sparks.
The blade is a work of art. Beautiful pattern, very sharp, nice forged tip. That you were able to do this with a grinder rather than a belt sander shows your skill as a craftsman. I do think that the tang is a little thick and that you might have put a bolster on the handle. I think where the blade meets the handle is a little clunky. I did appreciate the way you increased the thickness of the handle as it went from the front to the back. That aside, a very beautiful and well made knife.
Absolutely glorious this! Not exactly the pattern I thought when I saw the chain at the beginning - thought it'd be more of a droplet pattern, but when you start twisting the billet, sir I knew we were in for a treat! Thank you for the great video. What would you say the total man-hours are here then?
Magnificent, you are the king of the grinder! But I repeat myself again, protect your ears against noise! Just by watching the video, I turn down the sound, so I imagine the noise of the grinder in real life, I use one myself sometimes, and I could never use it without my noise-canceling headphones. Otherwise, put reusable earplugs made of a sort of silicone, it costs nothing on Chinese sites, and it protects very well from noise. I always have a pair next to the bed if my neighbors make noise in the morning while doing work at home, it also saves me sleep. Really, think about it, protect your ears, because all the beautiful things you will have made during your life, they will make you deaf. And it is not pleasant not to hear, as much for the one who cannot hear as for those around you who have to speak loudly to be heard. Or like my father who turns up the volume of the television extremely loud until it hurts my ears, he manages to fall asleep with such a loud volume. But for him, it is his years as a DJ and musician that have made him deaf. When you are young, you think you are invincible, but when you are old and deaf, having to wear a hearing aid is not at all pleasant either.
Nice blade, pattern is awsome ...handle could be/look better(shape, type of wood,to skinny maybe ...i dunno it just doesnt look right)....alot of hard work there....well done..i like it!
De fato um dos damascos mais lindos que já vi. Embora a faca como todo não pareça ser boa por causa da geometria de fio excepcionalmente robusta, de fato é um empecilho para um bom desempenho de corte. Más com certeza o damasco ficou maravilhoso.
Love it .... what is the small piece of metal that was welded in the middle of the 2 bigger pieces that you cut into two? I missed where that one was made. Was it from a previously made piece of steel.... killer looking knife ... thanks
As an amateur blacksmith myself I have made a few knifes and even a scissors .. I am amazed at this .. I am not a fan of using power grinders to shape a blade.. I want to learn how to do it old school forge anvil and hammer only! but I learned from this video GREAT WORK AND A BEAUTIFUL BLADE YOU DID MAKE SIR!
Damn that blade is gorgeous...I'd offer to buy it, but I'm sure you'd wanna keep a beauty like that to yourself, I wouldn't blame you if you did, lol 😅
You have probably been asked many times previously unfortunately I’m going to ask again, When you have quenched in the engine oil what is in the can you put it in after please? Asking because I am teaching myself blade smithing.
I wish you didn't twist it. Twisted Damascus all looks the same. Don't get me wrong it's nice and I certainly couldn't do better. I just would have liked to see the chain more

Yeah he should have folded and forge it even more.
I didn't see no cracks or anything to indicate this thing will break off in your hand

What a masterpiece. Gorgeous knife.
OMG! That looks so much like a tiger stripe pattern, I want that so much! So beautiful! Stunning work!
Beautiful blade! The handle turned out amazing as well.
Love seeing hand work that isn't precision perfect.
The pattern looks so clean! Great job.
That's a beautiful blade!!!
An absolute work of art! Beautiful and functional.
The resulting pattern is amazing !
Excellent work ! 👏

This guy has the same handling and control with the grinder that Jimi Hendrix had with his Fender Stratocaster.

wow this awesome 👏 I'm 37 and have been looking for ways to be successful, please how??
I do know Ms. Susan Jane Christy, I also have even become successful....
Absolutely! I've heard stories of people who started with little to no knowledge but made it out victoriously thanks to Ms. Susan Jane Christy.

This turned out absolutely beautiful!!
Hai realizzato un 'opera d'arte ,grande professionalita'.bravo 👍👍👍
That was fun to watch. Great job.
Dope AF results, Knives Project! Now it needs an equally dope sheath to complete the package!!
“It’s so fascinating!
Has anyone thought about trying to make a similar knife yet?”
That is your nicest pattern yet!

Bellissimo il disegno dell'acciaio che si armonizza perfettamente con la sagoma della lama stessa e del manico !
The texture/pattern on this one is awesome! Reminds me of the lizard...
That was so good to watch.

if you want to see someone do it the traditional way that would take hours maybe even days
@@Demom_King_Azura-alt obviously
@@DumbCarGuy not everyone has time for that is my point so you probably wont get a video of that anywhere

most beautiful knife I've ever seen
Beautiful pattern, reminds me of a Bengal cat's markings.
WOW!!! That looks amazing!
the etching looks amazing
So relaxing to watch how this skilfull smith turns the metal into masterpiece!
What does the white powder do in the forging process?
It creates a barrier from oxygen, keeping the steel clean and from oxidizing so the welds stick better.

That's a good point and look at the work shop, it's poorly ventilated. He should be wearing a mask with a good air filter as well.

very cool, very nice!!
One like on your hard work
beautiful blade. great skill
Unless he filled all the air gaps in the chains with powdered steal, idk how this blade is possible. Cold shunts much? I could be wrong
Im sure this ain’t the first knife he made. Yea your probably wrong
I think he just pounded the air out so all the metal was touching
I think your doubt is right, too low temperature, too less material, the material was not welded, he took another metal ingot for the knife
Amazing looking blade
Awesome blade!!!
