Oil Painting Practice | Alla Prima in the Studio

- Time for some alla prima oil painting practice in my studio. I'm hoping for better weather after a poor spell of high winds and rain has hit us in Cornwall. I thought a bit of practice with alla prima (wet into wet plein air painting techniques) might be a good idea to end the week.
I chose a little 10''x8'' panel and a subject where I could have a lot of fun.

I just enjoy watching your method Andrew. The way you make a small mark, then attack it with a palette knife or brush to get your desired effect is brilliant. Keep the videos coming. Always enjoy them.

I love your paintings and your TH-cam channel, Andrew. I like how you mentioned that you like using smaller brushes for more accurate mark making. I've been forcing myself to use larger brushes lately because so many painters say you should be using big brushes, but I tend to get sloppy and lose control with big brushes. I'm going back to my smaller brushes too!
Thank you so much. I really love the marks I can make with smaller brushes. I go bigger when starting larger canvases but always return to the smaller ones to get the marks I like. Have fun 😃

Another amazingly beautiful “practice” piece! 😉 and on burnt sienna, no less. 😁. Must say I do really love these studio Alla Prima videos that you do. Great music, vibe and we get a serene sense of the place. And , thanks for sharing what current projects you have going and I hope you continue to do that periodically! Easter holiday is soon and hope to see your daughter and Basil soon in another video!

@@AndrewBarrowmanArt I hope so too! ☺️ I mixed Quinacridone Magenta with the Australian Art Spectrum's Spectrum Yellow ....a very rich and interesting orange/gold, an adaption of one of your mixes I had noted down. 👍 There is no end to it, is there!! .... So many wonderful colour combinations, and isn't that great ☺️

I believe you would have fit in very well with Monet and the other Impressionists of his era. He surely would have been happy with your palette and your technique. Great seascape!!!

Lively vibrant painting - I love how you capture the surf, the breaking waves, brilliant. Can I ask what you clean your brushes with and whether you have a special method of cleaning them - they always look so clean and almost new, I don't paint anywhere near as often as you and my brushes look beat up in comparison. I'd enjoy seeing more palette knife work, I can't get to grips with them at all, even for mixing paint, and I want to overcome that.

I use Savon de Marseille (soap flakes made into block of soap in a bucket) for brush cleaning. I find it works better than solvent and conditions the bristles
In a recent video, you expressed your clear preference for oils over acrylics. Having produced two complete duds in acrylic over the last week, which I think would have worked in oils (or I'd have abandoned them sooner) I'm seeing your point: out of practice with acrylic, I hit the age-old problem with them: how do you make them blend? Well - you don't... every time I come back to acrylics I have to remember what they will do and what they won't - whether this is acrylics' fault, or old age and memory fade, I leave for others to say.

No. It did not gel. I cannot understand why. May be overworked, overpainted and the freshness is away
I enjoyed it - that's the main thing
An other very helpful addition to studio practice. We always told that old masters kept all their methods and potions secret. It is helpful to be able to see good practice, especially the subtle mixing of colours and tones. Most of us are scared to scrape paint away but gave an example where scraping produced a clarity which allowed you to develop the panel. The variety of blues gives great calm.
Hello Andrew! I'm looking at your paints and I see that you use paints from different companies. Do you choose your colors from these companies in any special way, or is it just a coincidence, price, etc. :)? I'm asking because I'm trying to create a nice palette for painting the sky, sea and landscapes in general and I'm a bit lost in the colors of English companies. So far I have mainly used Van Gogh, but I don't really like its colors. They change a lot after drying and I would like to try other companies, but these are quite expensive and I wouldn't like to invest blindly :)) Best regards!
I do prefer Michael Harding oil paints. However if there is a sale on or someone is selling their paints I will buy and use different brands
