Gene Clark was so under appreciated in his lifetime, and still is now. He’s like a well kept secret. Ever since I first heard the White Light album I was hooked. What a songwriter, and what a voice.
Gene had a way with words an melodies. I am constantly amazed at the songs he came up with. No matter how many times I hear him, I never tire of his music. For all that Crosby ridiculed his education, Gene had the supernatural ability to weave images with his music that brings me to tears to this day. Well above Amything any of the other Byrds ever produced.
So true... what a great singer song writer and this video is a wonderful gift..rare..an exceptional live performance and Carla is an incredible addition.
I was hooked with the first two Byrds albums and later with “Preflyte.” “The World Turns All Around Her,” “Set You Free This Time,” “If You’re Gone,” “I Knew I’d Want You,” “Feel A Whole Lot Better,” “She Don’t Care About Time,” “Here Without You.” The list is endless! But yes, “White Light” is one of the best albums ever made. Long live Gene Clark!!!
I've never heard any singer accomplish what Carla Olson does in her collaborations with Gene Clark--neither foreground nor background, neither collaborator nor competitor, she cradles his performance as if to keep him from falling into the abyss that he knew better than any other singer / songwriter who ever lived.
Americana's finest songwriter, such a talent, not without his demons, and never really confident playing live, Gene Clark was truly out of his time, it's a tragedy he is still so little known to this day.
America(nas) finest songwriter ? Yes , could be true . In the eyes of a lot of US people , GC is a failure. I for one prefer real artists , it is hard writing a truely sad song If You’ve never been there…
God I miss this guy. Never met him but just loved him. Saw him in concert with Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman once at the Sydney Town Hall in about 1979. Throughout their respective careers I think the other two were musically overall more advanced but I believe he was the better songwriter. That night way back then he seemed to stand out. He just had a presence about him. He's been gone since 1991 and only 46 years old. Such a wonderful talent. God bless mate. RIP
Of the three, Hillman is probably the best overall musician. Certainly the most versatile. I wouldn’t necessarily say McGuinn is a better musician than Clark. I love what Jolly Roger did, but he’s kind of a one trick pony. As far as songwriting goes, Hillman is also a much better writer than McGuinn, but Clark is in a category of his own. He’s up there with Lennon, McCartney, Dylan, Ray Davies, Pete Townshend and Paul Simon. Those are the best songwriters of the 1960s and beyond.
@@emmettmckenna4565 No I actually think he was far better than a lot of those guys. Gene was right up there with Ralph Mctell, Nanci Griffith, Townes Van Zandt, Kate Wolf and John Prine.

@@emmettmckenna4565I agree with most of it, but I believe McGuinn was a better guitarist, and that was it. I believe Clark got the best of Dennis Wilson, McCartney, Lennon and Dylan - a unique blend that 'no other' musician in the history of rock has accomplished. Sad that too few people know of him.

For me seeing Gene Clark and Carla Olson sing so beautifully together parallels Gram Parsons getting together with Emmylou Harris; both men finding a dream partner who wonderfully enhanced their recordings even as their own struggles to live neared an end. Life can be very sad.
Having gone down the YT rabbit hole after looking at the Byrds lately, I’ve stumbled upon so many of great Gene Clark’s songs & performances. I feel that I missed so much for so many years. When I was a lass walking miles along the hiways and byways of the godforsaken suburbs in order to get anywhere, my ma warned me not to accept rides from strangers, ESPECIALLY guys on motorcycles. Is this what was going through those guys' heads -- this beautiful, haunting poetry? If Gene Clark had ever ridden past me...who knows?
i am glad mcguinn and clark met, it was a good seed in the time plan that yielded a diverse tree by the river of life under which have gathered many friends to enjoy the shade and sounds
@ex1le444 Clark is so honest and so pure in his writing and performing that he may always be underrated in a world that values surfaces and lies. Still, his fans know what a terrible burden he bore for the sake of being true. He'll never be forgotten. Never.
Indeed! So Rebellious a Lover gave, I guess, a new lease to life for Gene Clark, and boy did he use it for good. Some say that So Rebellious LP launched the alt Country scene and I agree with that statement. Two Sides to Every Story is one of my alltime faves but it seems to be stuck in some kinda legal limbo as it has not been released on CD. Rhino, please give us a deluxe Two Sides to Every Story!
I once got to tell him he was, and still is, my favorite male vocalist. It was at the Houston Texas Opry House during a Byrds reunion. I love you Gene, like a son loves his dad, and I loved my dad. God (even though I don't believe in you) I loved my dad.
Isn't it funny there are still so few views. I have never heard a Gene Clark song I haven't liked. I think my favorite is "In a Misty Morning". I just really seem to relate to it.
It's a typically dark, dreary + cold day here in Syracuse, N.Y. Looking out the window, this song seems to fit perfectly as I sit + muse about things in the past. Thanks, Gene. You were too good for this existence.
Even the musicians behind him applauded. Was any singer ever missed so much?

This song by Gene is one of the best songs ever written, really liked the Byrds, but Gene was a musically drifting soul and had such great composing ability of his own, I am introducing this song into my gig set which I should have done a long time ago.We lost you too soon Gene.RIP
Thank you Gene for the music and memories. I'll set you free this time.
Hauntingly beautiful ...
wondrous gift, this! It does not get any better than Gene!!
one of the Most Valuable clips on entire YT!
Definitely. I've never heard a better album! Gene is the greatest American songwriter. So unbelievable throughout many years.
i remember in the early 70s waiting for the ship to come in carring the great imports of gene and doug , im in australia. when ya got the album it was like pure gold, the magic was in side that sleeve... ah , glorious expactations.. deep lryics, a voice that made your heart melt of pure emotion.. thank you gene..you came at the right time
What a talent , singer and songwriter ,much underrated .
This stopped way too early. He was still going strong in the 80's. This song is so beautiful. I wanna do a cover of it.
Greatness…lost too soon.
Love that performance , and that gorgeous pedal steel guitar from Hal Rugg.
This is so beautiful just like Gene.
Gram used to cry on stage singing his songs. I think that is sincere.
He just had a thin voice, but a voice I love.
I'm sorry; thank you for uploading this wonderful song.
Two words to describe........"timeless & endless" Amen
When I was a lass walking miles along the hiways and byways of the godforsaken suburbs in order to get anywhere, my ma warned me not to accept rides from strangers, ESPECIALLY guys on motorcycles. Is this what was going through those guys' heads -- this beautiful, haunting poetry? If Gene Clark had ever ridden past me...who knows?
Unglaubliche, diese Stimme so voller Trauer und bewegend!
i am glad mcguinn and clark met, it was a good seed in the time plan that yielded a diverse tree by the river of life under which have gathered many friends to enjoy the shade and sounds
Pure beauty, a magical voice.
Gene left us far too early. Always missed and appreciated.
Beautiful. There is no other like Gene...
@ex1le444 Clark is so honest and so pure in his writing and performing that he may always be underrated in a world that values surfaces and lies. Still, his fans know what a terrible burden he bore for the sake of being true. He'll never be forgotten. Never.
Amen!
Aging with time , like yesterday’s wine .
What a beautiful song
Just gorgeous. What a beautiful voice. One of the great singers.
So glad, we have TH-cam: all those beautiful lyrics sung by Gene last for ever and ever...
Thanks for posting it.
Greetings from Holland/Eu
Gene Clark live met naast hem Carla Olson. Op z'n Gronings, dat kon minder. Heel mooi.
I really love this song, and the two voices blend beautifully. Great song, great effort.
Yes, his work with Carla is wonderful.
It's a typically dark, dreary + cold day here in Syracuse, N.Y. Looking out the window, this song seems to fit perfectly as I sit + muse about things in the past. Thanks, Gene. You were too good for this existence.
