Beautiful...Songs and singers like this are so missed in these times of absolute soullessness. I´ll try to write such songs, if it´s the last thing I´ll do
R.I.P. Gene Clark. What a musical force.
I consider myself fortunate to have come from an age group exposed to Gene Clark music since the middle 60s.
Wow. Carla Olson is electrifying. A lot of fire in that woman.
Will never get over the loss of the great Gene Clark. Thanks for the video reminding me, I think.
If this great performance by 2 incredible musicians had not been taped on this tv show, we would not have this rare gene/Carla appearance. It is priceless. Thanks to tv producers Exeter a! Thanks to gene and Carla.
Thanks for all Gene. From Argentina.
These two together just FEELS right.
.
That solo of the acoustic guitar is beautiful.
A great duo! It's nice to see two major talents playing together and enjoying it. It's a pity this partnership didn't last longer due to Gene's bad health, but at least we have So Rebellious a Lover and a few live concerts.
I never heard of Carla Olson until tonight but she is amazing with both Gene and Mick Taylor. She is also versatile to do both country with Gene and blues oriented rock with Mick. She has a great voice that captures the emotion of the music with both artists. I am glad I discovered her.
I’ve been her friend since 1978. She’s brilliant!
Impressive performance.First time hearing Carla Olson. She and Gene compliment each other in this clip. Thanks for posting, brotherhamlet!
These two always make me feel better, no matter how bad I feel. Love you Gene and Carla.
He let her shine, and seemed to enjoy her performance. Gene didn’t need to be the center of attention. Such a humble and great man.
jeannie wight I love Gene but Carla is a talent in her own right, and Gene knows this so your comment is ridiculous. They are a duo and that is an equal partnership.
Margaret Ross No Margaret, she didn't. Jeannie said that "he (Gene) let her (Carla) shine" and that implies that Carla is not a real partner but something beneath him, that he is the boss. Gene wouldn't like that implication at all and I know Carla certainly wouldn't especially given what followed.
Margaret Ross Words have implications and the fact is Gene did not "let" Carla shine anymore than Gram let Emmylou shine. They were equal partnerships, nothing less. And you and Jeannie, as women, should understand what you're doing when you use words that put down other women, particularly women as exemplary as Carla and Emmylou.
Margaret Ross Shining a spotlight on someone is different to being allowed to shine so let's not put words in people's mouths that diminish the women that are equal partners with men. Interestingly, both Gram and Gene had big drug problems. They were weak and could not conquer their respective demons. In Gene's case, he would not have lived as long as he did without Carla since he was in the advanced stages of acute alcoholism and Carla tried hard to prevent him from drinking, an impossible task if the alcoholic does not want to help himself. Emmylou was in a relationship with Gram and leaned a lot from him but Carla and Emmylou are both still here while regretfully, Gene and Gram are not. Their longevity in an industry and lifestyle that destroys many is testament to their power as women so let's not diminish their achievements by saying that men allowed them to shine because that is simply not the case.
I agree with you, Jeannine.
Great performance of a great song. I like to think Carla gave Gene a few more years.
I think so,they made a great l.p.wish they could have done a few more!
That she did. Thanks.
Yes she was a great distraction from the great disappointments he had endured. These are so apparent in his face, particularly in those eyes. Carla elicited glimpses of enjoyment, achievement and self worth from his drawn, tired features They worked together so well and we must cherish this album for that reason. If only he had embarked on similar courses earlier. Still he was a great achiever whose worth and appreciation is beginning to be realized. .
I agree. A breath of fresh air.
Gene Clark owns this duo.
Gene! The Best of All Times !!!
Music that makes you want to cry because it's so beautiful.
Great performance! And they both look hot! I love Carla's outfit...and her beautiful long hair. Surprisingly, their voices go really well together and they each individually add a lot of colour to the vocals.i also like the little bit of vibrato in Carla's voice.
Good video. Two artists who should definitely be far better known than they are today...
His voice is fabulous!
Carla & Gene had enough talent between them to literally light up the stage!
Carla and Gene were/are magic together.
-love Gene's sports coat, jacket in this one.
Carla always looks scintillating.
.
Smoldering.
I'd best describe Carla as smoldering.
You can see smoke coming out - if ye look real close.
.
She reminds me of Joni Mitchell with a Carlene Carter voice. Gene is awesome, as always.
Good analogy.
Yeah carlene and joni = carla. Carlene has a powerful voice
She reminds me of Judge Roy Bean's Lily Langtree (sigh).
.
Hmmm..more like Mary Travers' voice.
They both sounded fantastic .... and Nashville Now's house band was always fabulous.
God, this girl's voice goes right through me. And Gene: well, he's the best.
What a great song and a beautiful sound. Listened a couple of times......😁😃
Carla was a great choice for a co-singer.
Goose bumps. Gene & Carla...so sweet!
God I love this. I love Gene...
When I decided to catch up with Gene Clark, this was the all-important first track on 'So rebellious a lover'. It's such a knockout song that all my doubts evaporated instantly. Carla Olson has a great voice and writes great songs. Can only wonder how good that second album would have been,,,
First time hearing this...the goose bumps are huge!!
Striking performance of a great song by two multi-talented artists.
I can't believe I missed this whole era of his great work. Much to catch up on!
Gene forever. R.I.P. Gene
Carla and Gene, beautiful souls both.
I personally prefer Gene on his own, his voice was so heartfelt, most of his songs touch me
Carla gave Dean several more years. She is a dynamic performer and Gene and the band greatly warmed to their performance.
@@phillipleighton-daly2480 her voice is def an aquired taste
Agreed. Staccato-like. Doesn't mesh with Gene's rich, soulful voice. It would've been great to hear more Clark-Crosby duos but unfortunately for American music overall, they just didn't happen to get along.
I disagree 100%. Both of their voices worked beautifully together. RIP Gene and thank you very much, Carla. Their album was awesome. ❤
VERY nice! RIP, GC!♐
Great song, so good together.
This is Terrific. Play it again.
Carla Olson is mesmerizing, wow - Gene is Gene, born to mesmerize.
.(thus it makes sense that Carla is there)
.
An absolute gem of a performance. And, a track from one of my all-time favourite albums. Thank you for posting, 'brotherhamlet'.
Happy birthday Gene!
So cool a discovery for me.....again :)
At some point I was EXPECTING this song?
-to BURST into flames.
.It had (has) every right to.
.
I didn't even know this song existed! I love it!!!
Schitterend nummer. Kijk hier met heel veel plezier na. Goed orkest. De stem van Carla Olson samen in combinatie met die van Gene Clark! : hartbrekend.
What a duo!
This is a sensational performance.
Should have been a number one hit.
if attached to a hit movie this song well could have won an Academy Award.
Still might.
.
Love that moment when Carla catches Gene out when he forgets the lyrics in his backup part and they both have a laugh.
The Great Singer/artist in the world !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every stitch of this song is perfect - musta been imported from Italy.
.
When I need a good hit of music I watch this
superb. nuff said.
They were in fine form on this evening...
You could attach this song to a James Bond movie, that's how
good it is. Fiery.
.
So great!
I really love this song.
Beautiful..
Bob Gibson and Anne Hills, Gram and Emmy Lou, Gene and Carla, the 3 best male/female vocal teams ever!💜
How about Peaches and Herb, Conway and Loretta, George and Tammy, Marvin and Tammi...
@@jeffweiler9382 Marvin and anybody to be honest. The Cosmic Cowboy and ELH still sends shivers down my spine.
Jesse and the padre try to keep things cool
Knowing exactly how to make stone into jewels
The judge was the kind of man who always talked fast
And the way things were going
His world wouldn't last
The desperado's make a plan
To set the town on fire
And when they try to make a stand
They were ambushed at the wire
The drifter never stays to fight
He keeps running till he's way out of sight
But it gets him nowhere
And the drifter never pays the price
He's running through the day and the night
But he's running to nowhere
The judge said boys don't you know this town is mine
Don't going try to change it everything will be just fine
Those desperadoes don't pay them no mind
Everybody knows that they can't read or write
The judge put Jesse in the jail
Although there is no crime
The padre tried to get him out
With a stick of dynamite
The drifter never stays to fight
He keeps running till he's way out of sight
But it gets him nowhere
And the drifter never pays a price
He's running through the day and the night
But he's running to nowhere
Oh no
The drifter knows he can't always go with the tide
The time will come when he'll have to choose up sides
Which way will he go will it be left or right
The judge says things are either black or white
The desperado's make a plan
To set the town on fire
And when they try to make a stand
They were ambushed at the wire
The drifter never stays to fight
He keeps running till he's way out of sight
But it gets him nowhere
And the drifter never pays the price
He's running through the day and the night
But he's running to nowhere
That is a song.
Love this. Great great
So good, this is Carla's song Richard Hunter, Gene;s so good............
Folks, the guy playing the acoustic solo is Tommy Tedesco of Wrecking Crew fame. One of the finest session men that ever lived
That is definitely not Tommy Tedesco in this video. Vaguely similar looking to Tommy but Mr Tedesco was 59 years old when this was filmed.
Your fucking nuts, why would you even begin to think that was Tommy Tedesco, he had no Byrd connections at all
Job for hire L.A. musicians backing here. The very best available. Tedesco worked right through till he died. He even turned up incognito on the Gong Show. This is way post Byrds. What criteria of actual knowledge do the 'voices' above in this thread actually have to make such crass comments in reply here? The 'Wrecking Crew' session guys worked independently till they died or packed it in. The name was only coined as a tag for all L.A session musicians of 'A' Lister status. Many musicians facilitated that role. Bassist Carol Kaye negated the term as drummer Hal Blaine's "Dumb assed name" for all the top ranking L.A. session folks. Key session musicians are present here behind Clark & Olson They do them proud. Not the key 60's ones in the documentary film The Wrecking Crew, but contemporaries for sure.
@@MrPhilfridge Do your research. Seen the Wrecking Crew Doc? Clearly not. Or you were asleep during it? Roger McGuinn admits the Wrecking Crew actually played on Mr Tambourine Man, not The Byrds. Therefore to hell with hypocrisy of McGuinn re 'So You Wanna Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star?' re the Monkees utilising session folks. SO DID THE BYRDS. This here of course is way post Byrds. This emanates from the final phase of Clark solo of duet years in 1986 on L.A. TV. Tedesco, if it his him, certainly did session work late on. His son says so. Watch the film before being so presumptuous. I've Archive Produced over 100 Music docs over 30 years. Your particular credentials are?
*you're, please
very beautiful indeed.
I agree Jeannie. A breath of fresh air.
Great!!!
Beautiful song, Thanks Carla&Gene
Awesome.
2:38 Gene aww
Really good music..
cudowny głos ma oczywiście Carla
Terrific performance. Love their album together.
Not enough Gene., in my humble opinion. He is always who I want to hear.
Que grande Gene Clark
Look at Carla's hair !! Wow !
Er...it's hair. Am I missing something? (Love her hair!)
Questi sono i brani che dovrebbero portare a Sanremo!!
Carla dedicated this song to my parrot Bill. Something I couldn’t make up. ❤️
Carla & Gene really had chemistry throughout this gig.
Most sixties acts had kinda gone to crap by the 80s, but Gene still had it
To me, this song and performance tops any song you could find on the CMT Top 20 countdown at any given moment.
Grandi entrambi !!!
Bold Carla and Gene taking the edge off
Ahh Gene looking pretty rough here. Sounds great. Wish he was still with us
He looks cute as always to me. I know he was struggling by this time, but my goodness. He is still gorgeous.
If only he had looked after himself more. We might have had another album with Carla and Gene.
Drifters. Drifting. Lost Souls.
.
A little paddle boat unaware of a Small Craft Warning for later that afternoon.
They/he don't know it yet. But they'll never make it back to shore. Meaning the
rules change for The Drifter. Instead of being permitted to just "drift?" Must now
go INTO the choppy waters, the drink, all 37 degrees of it. The hard part isn't
drifting on land. The hard part's drifting when yer in the drink. Then you have
about 20 or so minutes until your body begins shutting down. Anyway, love
the general subject of drifting, so of course I'd love Carla and Gene's version/take.
.
@tishhead she is a tough lady after all these years
Great vocal.
The accoustic guitar sounds awuful. Thanks for dharing.
Ive seen a few videos w carla singing w genes son Kai Clark on utube. Good! Kai looks like his dad
Poor old Gene. He looks just about beat in this vid. :(
He was very close.
I just bought a gem of a DVD about Gene's life and music: The "Byrd Who Flew Away" from foursuns. com! A must have for all!!
@@VISHNU369 thanks for the info. I will find it and watch it
I wish I looked this hot when I am beat!
@@donnaburke664 I absolutely agree, I think he looks very handsome
TH-cam scores again...beautiful song....via a Mick taylor/Carla video....
I want Carla's guitar!
where did it all go?
I know what you mean. Moments of magic pop up from time to time and are captured on video and audio. Rare and to be cherished.
Indeed they do. Today I found out this was posted on youtube nine years ago. Going to be showing this at parties.
Nashville Now on TNN?
Werkelijk schitterende muziek!
Anybody know if there is any more existing video footage from this amazing concert? If so, how do we get it?
at 1:40 Gene reminds us how to behave towards Desperado's.
...you know, in case we forgot.
.
Carla is a screamer!
Carla is a great singer but her voice overwhelms genes in this song
She wrote the song, so she sings lead. Gene sings lead on the songs that he wrote on their album, like Del Gato and Gypsy Rider, and they divide up leads on the cover songs.
