RIP Gene - and Bless Carla Olson for seeing in you what was always there hiding in plain sight for most of the American public. Arguably the INVENTOR of the American Pop / Rock singer -songwriter tradition. Before even Crosby, Gram Parsons, Neil Young, John Philips, John Sebastian, JT, Jackson Browne, Robbie Robertson. Gene absolutely earned his place in that firmament. Even Dylan saw in McGuinn Clark, Crosby and Hillman that the days of the lone troubadour were numbered, and if his work had a future it would be in the hands of his greatest interpreters - The Byrds, Hendrix, The Band and eventually an endless stream of followers. No other, Gene.
Today it has been 30 years since Gene Clark left us and became the part of the Universe and eternal Cosmic music. Thank you, Gene. Your fire is still burning in our hearts.
Hauntingly beautiful voice? Tragically beautiful? Bottomfeeders love the suffers of life, but they never like the classical handsome and talented. Right? You cannot imagine anyone thinking you are a creepy bottomfeeder who is drawn to his lack of sales and fans. Do you depress others? Try music that is jolly, friend. @@donnaburke664
Gene is a magician. With his voice, lyrics and melodies he touches my heart and my soul every single day. Gypsy Angel and all the other albums are incomparable and stunning.
Damn! Another lost beauty. John York once describe how meticulously Gene transcribed his songs. No household name, just another artist who's music will contribute to "the music of the spheres" forever.
from everything I've read about about Clark, whose music I love, he had a complicated relationship with his work. he could not countenance the thought of failure, but he had difficulty dealing with success. as some have observed, every time he got a whiff of success he ran away from it.
I think this is the version off "Gypsy Angel: The Gene Clark Demos." There's another version with Carla Olson on "Silhouetted in Light." The version with Carla is lovely, but this one, good heavens, my heart just breaks for this man.
Everytime I hear this I cry. Whenever I hear him begging her to believe in him, it breaks my heart. Love Gene Clark, and will never stop listening to him until the day I die.
the master of melancholy they call him, but he was so much more than that- melodies that go straight to the heart and a voice with a timbre that carried so much emotion.Gone way way too early but his fire keeps on burnin
Not the best sound. But hey, you get to hear a very beautiful song by the late Eugene. Enjoy. I love it. I love his voice, I love his melodies, I love the stories he tells aboth faith, hope, love and despair. He was a great one. He never received the appreciation he deserved. Albeit the songs he wrote for THE BYRDS. were responsible for the band´s early fame. He was the main songwriter in those early years. Many thanks for putting this up, Roccocolavito.
He died with dozens of wonderful demos of this quality that never made it into a studio. That is tragic, but at least we have these. Thanks for thi post.
He left 30 years ago today. I keep going back to any You tube videos I can find, and replaying them over and over. He had an amazing gift, and is greatly missed.
@@christineparker8020 im just glad that im not the only one. the demos are pure energy, delivered in his purest moments. I am not afriad to admit that I dont dare hold back my tears when I hear his voice, his message and lesson. Forever grateful.
@@devinlocke7075 You are not the only one. I just discovered Gene while looking for the Roseanne Cash "Fair and Tender Ladies". I love his and Carla's.version (did he compose the version they san?) .I'm playing everything I can find of his. He was so talented and played and sang so beautifully with everyone. I suspect he was only at peace when he sang, composed and played. Sublime voice, beautiful songs.
Amazed how he was ignored during his life, though he built an impressive legacy, and am so pleased that he seems to have been rediscovered. Once read a post that said if T Petty hadn't opened a floodgate of royalties to him, he might be with us still, but his family said he also had throat cancer. Either way, Thank You Gene, the gifts of your voice, your lyrics, the aching, live in our hearts, and so you live on.
If ever there was a symbol for conflict, it's a voice and a talent like this- and throat cancer. Thank you Mr Clark for all your gifts to us. Despite your inner conflicts, you produced many gems of rare beauty. RIP.
Yeah Tom Petty. Everybody knows you can't send our Gene any royalty checks. You might as well just show up at his place with a bunch of booze and Smack...in addition to the money of course.
Talking about fire, Gene Clark was like a human ligthning rod, with a direct connection to the gods of inspiration who made him their elected post of choice.
I love Gene Clark. I always hear his solo material in the context of the Byrds. They were a perfect match for each other; they would have lightened up his work a little bit. I hate like hell that he left the Byrds.
When Gene Clark left the Birds so did I. Well until Gram Parsons showed up with " The Flying Burrito Brothers" I did follow Gene right up till he passed, what a loss Gene Clark and No Other.
Thank you very much Rocco for sharing this. Keep up the good work. What great pictures fits with the melancholie of the song. For me Gene is the alltime best.
one of his finest songs these songs he wrote at the end of his time... heartbreaking...his voice already heavenly are always touching me...touching me deeply gene never left...
Gene said that the best poets held something back...l guess leaving something to the interpreter ....This song does just that”and break the chains of their despair”...That’s so ambiguous ...absolutely beautiful!

Gene Clark and Townes Van Zant breaks your heart every time. Thank you.
A more than a apt observation, couldn't agree more.. Two of the finest wordsmiths to grace the musical landscapes of my generation....
THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG AND SINGER THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE!

Really?
I am not an emotional man, but this song is so beautiful I almost cried. This is perfection.
Surely you are an emotionele man, don't be afraid to show it.

This happens way too often: extreme talent, misunderstood and feeling unappreciated. Glad he at least recorded as much as he did.
Just thinking same thing. He's did a lot of songs we can be thankful for that.

Absolutely one of the most haunting and beautiful tune Gene ever sang. Man I really love it..

I love this song so much!
Now your hearts on the ground
I'm trying hard to be fair
Someone out of control
Someone who doesn't care
As you pick up your pride
Put your head in the air
You find it hard to believe
That, that someone would leave
Till it was over
And all I want is you to believe in me
I am your fire burning here
And someday you'll find out
That you can be free
And break the chains of their despair
Meanwhile your fire is burning here
I can never replace
The time that I didn't know
You were trying to love
Someone out of control
With your life in my hand
And your in my heart in my soul
Hope that you'll understand
That my love can't just be and then be over
And all I want is you to believe in me
I am your fire burning here
Someday you'll fly away and you'll be free
And let them go in their despair
Meanwhile your fire is burning, darling
Meanwhile your fire is burning, leave it burning
Meanwhile your fire is burning here
I hope that I do ascend
The pain of losing you when
You were in the control
Of someone out of control
Some where deep in the night
I saw you finding your way
Silhouetted in light
And never having to say,
Say that it's over
So all I want is you to believe in me
I'm the fire burning here
And someday you'll find out
That you can be free
And break the chains of their despair
Meanwhile you're fire is burning, keep it burning
Meanwhile you're fire is burning, darling
Meanwhile you're fire is burning here
