John Deere X350 mowing grass 4-5 feet tall, yes it can do it!

  • Before I bought my X350 I researched video's to see how it mowed... All I found was video's of people mowing a perfectly good lawn that barely needed mowing... I needed to know if it could handle big, tall, neglected grass for my property... Everyone told me I should weed whack it first and then go over it... Naaaaah, lets see if it could handle it! It did beautifully! I mowed like crazy for around 6 and a half hours with crazy tall grass! I highly recommend one! Love it! Love it! Love it!

    Hello Rose don't listen to none of the comments below the bad ones anyway I have that same exact lawnmower just over 500 hours I'm in the commercial business and since the day I started mowing with it I haven't looked back I haven't had to do anything to this mower but service if it goes out I will buy another one the same model you are good to go

      T Rose I truly know the feeling about mowing on a john deere x350. I bought the x570 and can't stay off mines. I even had cut some people property for free. They cut like baby bushhog tractors.

    I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

      Roberts Manguss Tend to agree with you. This is whare a big tractor with a brush hog would be a better choice to use. Once it has been brush hogged a few times, and the grass is much more shorter and doesn't grow quite as fast, then you can use this tractor either on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

    Stop wasting your grass....that's pretty good grass. Lease the pastures out to horse owners, or a small hay grower. If you are scared of leases, just put out an add in craigslist that you are looking for a small operation to cut, dry, and bale your grass. Sell the hay and put some jingle in your pocket instead of working the crud out of your finish mower. Just my 2 cents.

  • @bwaffleman
    @bwaffleman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Glad to see such a good work ethic but that's the wrong tool for that job! You need a bush hog for that grass. Don't want to come off rude but those mowers are designed to pedicure grass beautifully not mow down fields, it is horrible for the engine and the spindles on the deck especially when you hear it bog down. A mower should never bog down that's when you know it's too much. The blades are done after something like that so make sure you keep up with the maintenance.

    • @tobirose
      @tobirose  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I know, I know, your totally right, I moved into a place that the grass was like that, I could have done it differently... This job was a one time deal, I did have the blades sharpened, changed my oil, lubed up the little nipple things (I forget what they are called).... I'm learning and she's been pampered since that day, running beautifully cutting normal length grass now... :-)

      Many of us garden/lawn tractor mowers have used them as a poor-man's brush hog, if you take it slow and don't do this every day, these machines will handle everything fine - I recall the first few hours on my x320 cutting an acre of rather tall grass

      Grease zerts or grease fittings. Little nipple things just takes the conversion to the wrong place. Nice pasture I think I get me a goat or some type of livestock to live in that area😋. A horse would be nice. It looks like a rual setting with places you can ride a horse. The live stock will keep the grass down.

    • @danbasta3677
      @danbasta3677 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael C Yes, I agree with your comment whole hartedly. Though I'm no fan of John Deere tractors, if i did own one, i still would tend to protect it and baby it and be easy on the equipment. A much bigger tractor with a brush hog would knock out this field in no time flat, and I'm talking about a farm tractor, not a utility tractor, gotta baby the equipment, take care if it, keep the deck clean inside and outside, and above all things, KEEP THOSE BLADES RAZOR SHARP! I tend to wash and wax my equipment when they are cold to the touch after using them, laugh at me if you will, with frequent oil changes and keeping the blades and all the greese fittings greesed up properly.

    Mow in one direction reversing back over the cut area, then advance one step over. This keeps all clippings away from the new cut a relieves the strain on the mower.

    If you clear the grass clippings from your mower deck by hand as much as you can then take any kind of blower to blow the access clippings from the spindles so you can save a deck belt from breaking so much clean underneath the mower deck for better grass flo check your mower blades every season if you're blades look fine or need to be sharpened I would change my blades out of yeah dislocate the sparkplug boots or wire or if you have a to silinder engine dislocate both of the spark plugs boots or wires then put the spark plugs boots back on when are done changing your blades

    The only problem i have had with mine is flat tires. I got a puncture in one front tire fifteens minutes after it was delivered . put an inner tube in it and ok .TWO DAYS LATER GOT A FLAT IN THE OTHER FRONT TIRE SAME THING. I checked the thickness of the tires between the lugs and it was less than an eighth of an inch . You would think that for an expensive mower they would upgrade the cheap Chinese tires. Also the deck does not raise high enough for my liking. Okay for a city lawn but no good for out in the country.

    I will add a link to my mowing adventure... th-cam.com/video/3h5fc803lzY/w-d-xo.html You put out a video and you can get more suggested... it seems to be a category of videos... I tend to do my first cut of the season with no bagger on my mower... the plugging of the pipe to the bag gets crazy... anyway... I have a composting area near my garden for grass clippings and leaves, hedge trimmings and so on. so after the grass gets cut, and dries some, dust mask gear and a bagger to collect with a cart to empty the bagger into. more stuff you can add to your mower over time... my mower is about a decade old and still going. You do give me an idea of where I might go for my next mower... Sears has not been looking very healthy as a store, my mower might outlast the stores... the John Deere dealers seem to hang in there rather well... I did make my first cut about as slow as I could go, and I tend just shave half a deck width off with each pass after the first when the grass is high and thick.
    I did add a home made tongue extension to my bagging cart to reach under the bagger to make bag emptying a bit easier... but just parking a cart with high sides close to a spot where the bag ends to fill up works well too.

    Hi T .Rose, just a tip, when you've finished mowing it's not recommended to wash the deck down as the bearings are still hot & they widen open a bit which will allow the water in when you wash it...as the unit sits waiting for it to work again the rust has started to do damage...it's recommended to wash the deck when cold...Just a helpful tip.

    Heads up, you have a lot of grass stuck under it. Make sure it isn't all jammed up on the transmission. The K46 doesn't have a reputation for being a long life transmission, and the grass stuck under it could prevent it from properly cooling. The failures are supposedly caused from the fluid in the trans cooking/overheating, and usually around 200 hours is when people start noticing it.

    Keep an eye on your mower deck, that it's not getting too much build up that could cause a heap of problems. Shredded belts, pulley damage, broken brake system on the deck belt.
    So much fun plowing through tall grass but it could end up costing you big time in the long run.
    Watch that buildup.
    Fun video to watch. Can't wait to break in my new John Deere 🤗

  • @5153flash

    There is a break in period when you buy a new mower. Engine should run at a high RPM,well oiled so the rings seat to the cylinder wall correctly. The Cam ,push rods and valves too,must seat into their positions.This is very important for a long life of the engine. It is so important they give you paper showing how it is best to go thru the procedure.
    And what do you do??? LMAO Go cut 4ft grass for 6 hours while the engine is bogging down and every moving part on the mower is straining to keep up. There were a few times the engine almost stalled.
    When a engine is worked so hard it almost stops,,the forces to do this are unbelievable!! Its not being oiled properly and the strain on the rods are near breaking point!!
    But Yah! Oh the joy of what you have done!! Yippie!!
    The engine will have a early life because of this. You would have been better off ,,babying the mower for at least the break in period,,,and then running it hard the rest of its life!! It would last longer.
    The first sign of engine failure will be small amount white smoke,,at start up and then occasionally while running.
    See you at the JD dealer. Your warrantee will cover it!!!
    Unless they see this video!! lol

    You should throw the discharge from the mower out to where you have already mowed. Then the mower will cut better. Also slow down so the mower has time to cut the tall grass. It will also be easier on the mower.

    Amazing job and how many acres would you say you did? And yes you could have done it other ways but don't listen to other people saying you should have done it that little mower held up like a champ and like you said it was only a one time deal so nothing to worry but I had to subscribe you don't an amazing job

    • @tobirose
      @tobirose  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wouldn't want to do that very often of course they are not designed for that much grass. Pretty tough work for a small tractor but the damn thing handled it pretty well.

      True, true, true, I don't plan on doing that again! Now that I have one I can keep up on it forever now! I actually can't wait to mow now, it's weird, I think I need to be studied! LOL

    Nice mower, I've got a x380 and like it. However I would have bit the bullet and had a bush hog come in for that first cut. Never know what's laying under all that grass.

    • @tobirose
      @tobirose  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya, I should have done the whole property like that... I did have the front and back yard done with a brush hog, but I ran out of money to have them to the rest so that's kinda why I did it myself on the other half of the property... Winning the lottery would be nice, but this will have to due for now... :-)

    That looks like the JD my neighbor just got. Worked out well for me because he gave me his old one, a Craftsman YT4000 from 2011. It's my first tractor mower. It needed some work, but it's romping good now. I kind of actually look forward to cutting now.. at least I have two properties I take care of, mine, and that of a lady down the road (pretty, too, like you.)

    I do believe yours is the first x350 I've seen in grass that tall. there are several on the tube showing the x700s, x900s, 1023, 1025, and bigger tractors. remember to do your maintenance, that Deer will run forever.

    • @Bradmeiser
      @Bradmeiser 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      George Smith Aye yeah i have an X750 that would cut what she did like it was nothin. No bogging out or anything. Plus it would do it in half the time it took her to do it 6 and half hrs for a field no bigger than that is a bit much.

    • @georgesmith7773
      @georgesmith7773 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LOL...yeah, I would have used my 1025r, h120 loader, 2048 cutter, and the DR fence line trimmer. I would have cleared out the debris piles, and mucked out the loafing stall. dug a hole and buried it all with my 260 back hoe, then bladed it off with my box blade.
      point is, she used what she had, treated it gently but worked it hard, and got it done for a lot less than your x750, and a kings ransom less than my 1025r and goodies.
      hey, it's a Deere!
