Peugeot 208 Review

  • Welcome to my review of the new Peugeot 208.
    I do apologise, I missed out the 75bhp engine which is found on the Active trim level.
    The 208 or any small Peugeot hatchback has always been a success for the French brand and this new 208 is no exception.
    Styling has gone above and beyond for this latest generation and I can't think of another car in this class which comes close to such a striking design. Can Peugeot do no wrong?
    Not only does this new 208 look good but it is also a strong performer. With this 1.2L 3 cylinder engine producing 129bhp. The 8-speed auto is pretty good too.
    Peugeot 208 GT Line 1.2L PureTech 130 EAT8 S&S Automatic (£23,775)
    Colour - Cumulus Grey - £545.00
    Optional Extras;
    10" capacitive colour touchscreen - £650.00
    Adaptive Cruise Control - £300.00
    Total Price - £25,270

    Another good review. Peugeot have certainly come a long way - our family car for well over 10 years was a 306, and fairly recently we had a 208 loaner and we were well impressed. But. for us the stupid steering wheel completely lets it down. I would much rather look to Vauxhall when considering a replacement for our 5008 (yes I know that they do have 5008 type in their line up - but going down to a 3008 would be worth considering - especially the EV variant). Shot themselves in the foot me thinks. I think they are aiming at the lower age range and ignoring oldies like us. Stay safe David.

    • @AutoBears
      @AutoBears  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the comment Kim. The steering wheel works well in the 208 due to its small size. It does also work in the 3008. The Grandland X was a lovely car for the brief time I drove it but hopefully will get the chance to review soon.

    Excellent review, very thorough and well-thought out. I am in love with my 308, I've had Golfs and other Frenchies but this 3 cylinder engine (mine is 135 BHP - how can you get that from 3 cylinders!) is incredible. Co-designed with BMW so that might explain it. I urge you to try this car, that 1.2L engine is an absolute peach. It makes the competition look like gas-guzzling wannabes. Thank you!

    • @rossdev
      @rossdev 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to own a 208 GT, and it had a 1.6 150 bhp engine that was also co-designed with BMW. It was a fantastic engine, but had a problem where the timing chain rattled on startup due to a loose hydraulic tensioner which would eventually cause timing problems with the engine. This issue was very widely reported. The 1.2 Puretech engines have timing belts but also had a lot of problems. There has been a recall to replace belts that were at danger of crumbling (they are wet belts in the sense they are submerged in oil). My understanding is all new Puretech engines in 2022 cars will have timing chain designs instead. I hope these problems are fixed as I'm buying the new Mokka which has one of the engines.

    Nice review David👍. The Pugot's exteriors styling, makes it much more expensive looking than the Audi's and Merc's. Their styling dept definately need an award for this design..Even the interiors for the frt passengers are fantastic. My sis owns a 508 and the interior, exteriors are on another level. Even the driving dynamics are worth the price, if you get the top of the range model. Worth to hv look, if you want to move away from owning the regular Mercs, Audis and Bmw's..

    Great review. I am in the market for a new car in this segment & really like the new 208. However, due to back problems, I absolutely MUST have heated seats - but for some reason, Peugeot do not include them - not even in the GT Line version. That's a shame & a real deal breaker for me. From what I can make out in the brochure, they are standard on the electric (GT) version only. If I want them in the GT Line version - as far as I can make out - then they are a VERY expensive option because you have to have leather seats - and I don't like or want leather seats. Come on Peugeot. Sort it out. It's 2020 - not the 1970's. When the freezing British winter gets here in a few months time - I'm not going to want to drive a 208 with no heated seats. I never thought I'd see the day that I dismissed an otherwise great car... just because it hasn't got heated seats - but there you go. Shame....

    • @AutoBears
      @AutoBears  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the comment Glenn. It is a shame that heated seats aren’t on the GT Line spec as you do kind of expect it. I hope you’re able to find the car that suits your needs.

    • @glenncole7721
      @glenncole7721 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AutoBears No, thank you Auto bears for the comprehensive review on the 208. Appreciate the time & effort it takes for such an in-depth review.
      The 208 GT Line 8-speed auto was top of my wish list for my car change in a couple of months time. It's not a cheap car in that trim anyway - so having to get leather seats just to get them heated is well over a £1,000 extra and, as I say, I don't like or indeed want leather seats in any car as I much prefer fabric.
      I'm leaning towards the Toyota Corolla 2.0 GR Sport or the new Ford Puma which, I'm glad to say, is due out this month with a 7-speed DC gearbox. Both have heated seats as standard of course - like most cars these days... except for the Peugeot 208. We live in strange times Auto Bears!

      @@AutoBears I shall look forward to your review of the Corolla GR Sport Auto Bears! It will be interesting to see what you think of Toyota's new eCVT box with a proper 1st gear. I know many people don't like CVT's but Toyota do them better than anyone else - especially the awful Nissan ones! The GR Sport looks fabulous in white with the black roof (Bi-Tone I think they call it) and although petrol is cheap at the moment due to world demand, it will soon rise again & it makes sense for me to consider a hybrid.
