    The thing I like most about this movie was the way they handled the MUTOs. They weren't evil beings bent on destroying humanity, they were just animals following their natural life cycles, and it was just bad luck that humanity was in the way. The way they reacted to their nest being destroyed made feel genuinely bad for them.

    • @THE_DARK_RAY
      @THE_DARK_RAY ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Actually if the mutos did succeed then it would put an end to life as we know it in the monsterverse godzilla keeps the natural order which would be disturbed by the mutos and it is because of of the muto species that godzilla's species is extinct and it might be because of those two and the muto prime that godzilla's father aka dagon aka the skeleton in the beginning of the movie is dead so godzilla already was angry at their sheer existence and if that wasn't enough then keep in mind those mutos are siblings

  • @MystDragon3k
    @MystDragon3k 2 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    I appreciate how much classic godzilla made its way into this version, even the more subtle ways. Godzilla is the Heavyweight champion of Kaiju, but he's only good at 1v1. Anytime he's gone up against more than one monster, its worked out poorly for him, and the exact same is true here. He can easily handle one MUTO, but together he just can't keep up. Its only when they seperate and Godzilla can focus on one, then the other, does he succeed. I don't know if the filmmakers did this on purpose, but its very true to Godzilla's skillset.

    11:10 You summed this up perfectly. I see at the end you wonder why this movie is rated so low and the reason is because the fans didn’t like Godzilla’s screen time and thought there was too much human involvement. However, I agree with you, the suspense and mystery surrounding Godzilla in this film is perfect and it enhances the climax. And in my opinion the human drama was enough to keep me entertained when the kaiju weren’t on screen. Along with several other reasons including the sound design I thought this movie was a fantastic introduction for Legendary’s version of Godzilla. Might have to move to Patreon for these ones because they’re my favourite, great reaction!

      Yea I think this 2014 movie is a masterclass in monster movie portrayal. What the general audience craved, what was "lacking", was in fact the very reason why Godzilla had such a high impact - because every time he had screen presence it truly meant something and effort was always devoted 100% to bringing the absolute best of each monster into light. It's like design, if you want to highlight the importance of a detail, you should make its surroundings less attention drawing. A grey shoe with a single bright orange highlight detail makes that detail stand out that much more than a brightly colored shoe where everything is fighting for attention - and you end up devoting no attention to any specific element in isolation. If Godzilla had tons of screen time, the individual scenes would overall be less memorable. Quantity over quality.

      Funnily enough, in the Japanese movies Godzilla also isn't shown for a lot of the movie and we're generally just fed the story lines of the humans. That's what this Godzilla tried to emulate and they did it well imo. Somehow people went on to say that "this isn't Godzilla" tho, despite Toho being absolutely fine with this iteration as opposed to the tragedy that was the 1998 one.

    The reaction to this film seems to be *very* dependent on if someone's a fan of the more, umm, familiar-to-geek-culture Godzilla films. In other words, how much do you want to see giant monster fights. If that's what you're after then the constant cutaways are frustrating and the fights you do get annoyingly short so I can understand that POV. However... yeah, as a movie this is almost certainly the high water mark for the current Monsterverse, at least so far. Keeping the action off screen until act three gives everything time to breathe and as a result the big moments have so much more impact. The film treating the big G like a true force of nature doesn't hurt either! Honestly about the only misstep was killing off Brian Cranston so damn early which... I get why but yeah, with how heavily he was promoted in the marketing it definitely takes a while for the film to recover (I'd say all the way to Godzilla coming ashore for the first time TBH).

Steps would have shockwaves by themselves, and his roar would have shattered windows and would probably distorted air visibly being far way would mean you can see the sound waves as they broke anything fragile( windows of buildings, cars) and would pick up any dust in its path. This movie was my first Godzilla movie I had seen in theaters but it is not my first ever Godzilla movie. My first ever Godzilla film was in fact the 1998 Godzilla I saw on VHS when I was a little kid, I don't remember how old I was all I know is that I was either in Kindergarten, 1st grade, or 2nd grade and met my best friend in 3rd grade who is also a hardcore kaiju fanatic just like me, I grew up watching the Toho Showa and Millennium Godzilla films so hearing Godzilla would come onto the big screen was a huge deal for me. I saw Godzilla (2014) when I was 12 years old and the movie is definitely one of the best in the franchise looking back on it now. I remember being super excited to see the movie in theaters mainly because it was the first time in my life I would ever see my childhood icon on the big screen especially since all the Godzilla movies I own were on DVD. This movie is definitely the best in the franchise, while it may not be mindless fun like Kotm, GVK, Final Wars, Destroy All Monsters, Tokyo SOS, and King Kong vs Godzilla to name a few, where this movie excels at is making the kaiju themselves feel gigantic, Godzilla while not on screen much, he made his presence known and felt when he was on screen and his atomic breath scene was the highlight for me both now and back then I was like "It ain't a Godzilla film without his signature atomic breath!!!". At the time I did not like Godzilla not having much screen time but I was only 12 and most of the Godzilla films I watched had big monster battles and plenty of Godzilla screen time but now at 20 years old I don't mind it at all, this is a great movie and the climax is one of the best final fights in the franchise, it is one of my top 5 favorite Kaiju fights with my first two being Godzilla and Mothra fighting Rodan and King Ghidorah from Kotm (2019) and Godzilla fighting Monster X and Keizer Ghidorah from Final Wars.

    As a longtime Godzilla fan, hell when I was 4 my parents would call me Willzilla, the Monsterverse is a refreshing series. It's makes it more accessible to an audience that wouldn't have any ways of seeing the Godzilla franchise. If I did have to make a recommendation, watch either Gojira from 1954, the original movie, or Shin-Godzilla. Both are in their very good and Shin-Godzilla is standalone film, so you need not to know the whole filmography of Godzilla to understand it.
    Chronological the monsterverse is Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of The Monsters, and Godzilla vs Kong. Hope you'll continue to enjoy the rest of the series.

    Godzilla's atomic breath has been a staple of the franchise since the very beginning. in the 1954 original movie from Japan, in black and white, when you see Godzilla using his breath on power lines and see the tower changing color, because its black and white, you don't really understand what's happening, until the tower collapses, then you figure he just melted them!

    You know what the spooky part is? This is just Godzilla without his coffee. He just woke up and only had so much trouble with these two because he was still feeling groggy. Once he speeds the fuck up in future movies.

    There's something oddly satisfying about this 2014 film by Gareth Edwards, yes there is too much human screen time and less Godzilla, but the suspense pays off in the end, I wish I could go back and watch it again in the theaters. To relieve that same suspense and experience of slowly revealing Godzilla, bit by bit and getting sense of his scale and stare in awe.

    In a complete nonshocker for someone who clicked on this video, but I thought this movie was phenomenal, and I still remember seeing it in theaters and being thrilled. Chills, when Godzilla screams and when that atomic breath powers up one scale and sound wave at a time. 8.5/10 is very accurate!

    Honestly, when I first watched the movie, I was kinda miffed about how little we saw Godzilla; however, after watching it multiple times I come to appreciate the human-side much more. It makes the world of fighting monsters larger in the finer details, adds more layers to it that I quite appreciate. That said, I still watch the movie for the star of the film, Godzilla himself... but some Godzilla, is better than no Godzilla as far as I'm concerned tbh.

    Yo, veteran G fan here
    This is in my opinion the perfect introduction movie for the franchise, but you gotta watch the rest of the Monsterverse before you branch out to others like the original 1954 film, the Showa, Heisei, Millennium, Reiwa, Hanna Barbera, TriStar, Comics, all of that.
    This franchise is so extensive and this movie is just scratching the surface, and if you go down the rest of the rabbit hole, I will be excited to see your journey!

    I was 12 or 13 when I saw this movie in theaters. And when I was a kid I loved the old Japanese movies. So when I was watching this I was enthralled the whole time but sad that the atomic breath didn’t show up. So near the end I had basically given up on seeing the atomic breath. So when I saw the blue from Godzilla’s tail the goofy giddy smile and excitement I felt is impossible to put into words
