China has no real history with their own naval ships, but Chinese people have lots of money to spend. so to get some of that money, they make these fake Chinese ships in hopes of selling a lot of them.
you have to remember that Iowa is more closely related to a battle cruiser. It is a battleship, but its a "fast battleship". Lightly armored, relatively, and very quick. Kinda like a battle cruiser. I personally believe that if the Iowa and a South Dakota ship went toe to toe, the Sodak would win just because of its better armor. This is in real life of course.
The Sodaks and Iowas have functionally the same armour scheme with the same immunity zones against the 16/45cal firing the Mk 5. This was reduced somewhat by the Mk 8 fired by that same gun, and even moreso by the 16/50cals of the Iowas firing the Mk 8. So realistically, Iowa is going to have a wider immunity zone than Sodak and the speed to dictate the range of engagement. So the advantage lies firmly with Iowa.
@@Thraxus please correct me if I'm wrong, but it is my understanding that the game does not portray the armor correctly as compared to real life. The bow plating on the Iowas is 26mm as opposed to the 32mm presented in game. The South Dakotas had actual 32mm bow and stern plating. I am basing this off of Ryan from Battleship New Jersey. He has said the bow plating was 26mm numerous times. The Iowas' armor was based on the armor of the Sodaks, particularly their All or Nothing scheme. However, with the bow and stern much longer, they sacrificed further armor to gain more buoyancy. I will readily admit I am not a scholar of the US Battleships to near a degree that many are, I am basing off of what I've heard and come to understand. Both the Iowas and the Sodaks were far better armored than the North Carolina battleships, both classes were powerhouses in the war, I simply feel the Sodaks armor was superior to the Iowas
@cerneysmallengines I was referring to IRL rather than in game. I'm not entirely sure as the specifics of bow and stern on both ships and that's largely because in the context of the all or nothing arrangement, its largely irrelevant. And realistically, in any meaningful engagement, 6mm of armour difference wouldn't make really any impact, there's no magical universal thresholds for autobounce when it comes to naval combat and both ships Ideally will want to be fighting broadside anyway. And with the all or nothing scheme, the ships are generally designed to be able to keep fighting even with their bow and stern having been pulverised. It's citadel and deck protection that matters most of all in this fight, and they both have the same 12in inclined belt, the same 6in main deck in effectively, the same layout. All of that extra tonnage of Iowa got devoted to speed. It makes sense because the Iowas, in the design we see, were essentially upsized sodaks that could reach the 33kn speed minimum of the "fast" battleship requirement put out by the US navy, after attempts to design from the ground up resulted in ships that were either too compromised or too far overtonnage, the US navy was still working within the 45000t treaty limits of the escalator clause with their design.
Some of the earlier iowa preliminary designs could definitely be called battlecruisers though. There was one with a belt that could protect up to heavy cruiser guns, in return for something crazy like 35kn of speed. Of course this was abandoned because really, the primary class of ship the Iowas were intended to counter were the Kongos. There was a lot of concern that the fast congos could penetrate past the existing slow battle line and wreck havoc on cruisers or carriers. The slower much more heavily armed and armoured Montana's were the intended response to Japan's heavier battlefleet. Though of course, war broke out and the carrier proved itself more valuable than any battleship so the Montanas were cancelled and the Iowas only rushed through because of their ability to server as fast carrier escorts
