  • The Kingston Trio (George Grove, Bob Shane, and Roger Gambill) perform a medley of their hits live at the Coconut Grove in Los Angeles in 1979. I was one of the producers and head of post-production on this show and also created the photo-montages in front of all the acts. Recorded as a 6-camera live remote directed by Marty Callner and mixed in stereo at Sunwest Recording Studios in Hollywood by award-winning sound guru, Phil Seretti.

Having been a fan of the trio since high school (late 1960s). When I got to Boston, I HAD to ride on the MTA. Well I got LOST and came to realize that it's more than an amusing tune, but in high probably a true story?

It's a shame he passed on at such an early age. He was only 42. But he left a legacy as a member of the greatest band of all time.

Incredible. What an influence they had on my life. Saw the KT live many times. Up among the best live performances I've seen. Great songs, musicianship, & humor.

Jason - I just posted a song on TH-cam that I think is your father performing solo: South Coast. Would love to know if I got that right or if it's Roger Gambill instead. It is a fabulous performance!

Michael, thanks for putting this together. Like your montage at the beginning too. After I got out of college, this is the configuration that Bob Shane had with George Grove and Roger Gambill. What a great group they were. George was the new man and now he has weathered through the times to have 40 years in with the trio. Thanks for hanging in there George. Roger, may he rest in peace, and Bob is still singing with the trio on occasion. Kudos.

Thanks, Charlie. Those montages were tough back then because it was before computers and digital and I had to shoot them on an animation stand frame by frame. Took forever. These guys were a total gas to hang around during the shoot. The most friendly of all the acts in the show. It didn't hurt that I was a big Kingston Trio fan.

Stan Kaess was the bass player for over 20 years. I spent a lot of time with Stan when he was off the road. They toured almost 30 to 35 weeks a year. I married Ruthie, Stan’s widow, and loved her for 32 years until pancreatic cancer took her from us. Stan had two sons Brady and Colby. Two good men I helped raise.

He was wearing a toupee. Someone told me that during one of their performances that Bob Shane actually pulled off the wig and told him he didn't need that! He never wore it any more after that.

I loved the trio, but they slaughter Rev. Mr. Black in this rendition. One of the biggest shortcomings of the trio, even with the ability of George Grove as a musician, is that they never grew musically and then simply rested on their laurels from the 60s.
I loved them in their heyday, but, come on, guys!

These aren't any more the Kingston Trio than Paul McCartney is the Beatles. Playing the original songs doesn't make you the original group.

The original Kingston Trio of Bob Shane, Dave Guard or Nick Reynolds are deceased, as is John Stewart, an early replacement for Guard…the many replacement musicians ARE also the legitimate Kingston Trio, musically and otherwise because they own the rights to the name and the songs…they just are not the original group…what would you expect after 70:years?
