They were so good. And funny too. I love all the self-deprecating humor.

Old bloke humour! I went to see a 'reunion' show of a band from way backwhen, the drummer did a couple of bass kicks and a snare tap while the singer was chatting with the audience, he then turned round and said, 'What are you doing back there, building a shed?'.

The Kingston Trio was a favorite group of my big brother. When we played the songs he sang harmony and he was actually really good at it for someone who made no claim to being a singer... I cry now when I hear Tom Dooley cause I miss him more than anyone else I've ever had to say goodbye to...🎼💔

My big brother, too. But I didn't sing along. I only found out online 2 weeks ago that he died almost a year ago. No more to laugh with him.

I started playing guitar in ‘65 and The Kingston Trio was a big part of the how and why. What was so unique with the Trio is the interplay they always had with the audience. I’ve seen them with Trio members including, Nick Reynolds, Dave Guard, John Stewart and the ever present Bob Shane. I love this combination with Roger and George, so much talent and so well executed.

My big brother took me to see the original Kingston Trio in Baltimore in the 60s, during the height of "the folk music scare, back when that almost caught on," to quote Martin Mull.. We sat on bleachers. There were just the 3 of them, but, Man, they got the big hall going, hands clappin' & feet stompin' - Those were the days!

When I was kid (not sure how old), my parents went to see the Kingston Trio. I’m pretty sure it was in Atlanta at Banks & Shane. When they came home, they gave me a Kingston Trio cassette tape. I wasn’t sure why they thought I would like it, but it became one of my favorites. I wasn’t even old enough to understand the subtleties of the humor or understand the nuances of Tom Dooley, but I loved it and knew all the songs. I thought handing Charlie a sandwich through the window because he couldn’t afford to get off the train was hilarious....and a bit sad. Glad to say I’ve matured - a least a little bit - But yeah, nostalgia and a renewed appreciation from me. (Still know most of the words.)

I just read a beautiful story by my favorite author, Bill Lee. Story was about the sinking of the Ruben James. He put the link to this song in his story. I’m glad I clicked on the link because some of the comments below are very moving. Bill Lee writes for the Newport News shipbuilding apprentice news journal. I wish I could give you a link to the story, but it is as yet unpolished.

as a child in India, I would sing along "Hang Down Your head Tom Dooley" 45 rpm vinyl played on our monoplayer HMV Fiesta....and I fell for the song....as I soon realised it comes from such a talented 'cultural-genius' that each one of the band-members are. Thanks for the upload....it helps me connect to my 'boyish emotions' of 10-12yr old lads.

Nick (and John Stewart too) died in 2008, Bob in 2019. George Grove is still living and with Rick Daugherty and Jerry Siggins formed a group called The Folk Legacy Trio, and they are fantastic! Guy on the lefts last name was Groves (can’t remember his first name), guy on the right was Rodger Gambill, guy in the middle was Bob Shane ( only original Trio member in this clip). I grew up with the Shane family. They owned the horse farm, appropriately named Kingston Farm, just outside Roswell Ga. where we boarded our horse. The house and property are still there, however the barn has been torn down. I dated his oldest daughter through most of my teenage years and fondly remember many nights sitting around their living room listening to Bob and Rodger play and sing along with some other local artists. Bobby was still traveling and touring a lot during those years, but he seemed to relish his down time. He had a magnificent automobile collection, particularly a gorgeous 40’s era Jaguar limo. He would ride his dirt bikes and let us shoot some of his guns. He retained ownership of the Kingston Trio name and brand until his passing due to heart disease. Hope this bit of info was helpful.

The band formed in the late 1950s with Dave Guard, Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds. Dave left the group in 1960 and John Steward replaced him. This group broke up in 1967, but Bob Shane carried on and bought the rights to the name from Nick and their manager (all three owned them). The group in this video - Bob, George Grove on banjo and Roger Gambill, toured from about 1976 to Roger's death in the early 80s, at which time Nick came back and Bob, George and Nick formed the group for about ten years. Nick retired and Bill Zorn took his spot, then Bob retired after heart trouble in the early 2000s. Rick Daugherty joined and George, Bill and Rick toured as the KT for 14 years (which was the formation of the group that lasted the longest). In 2017, Bob licensed the KT name to Mike Marvin, who took over and replaced George, Bill and Rick with himself and new members. I'm not sure who is with Marvin now - the personnel has changed a couple times since 2017.
