Liked the earlier formation of the Trio...what a fabulous group it was. It was a simpler and happier time back then...wish it could return, but we have long since passed the last offramp.

I so agree with you. We were so lucky to be living then. Dave Guard kissed me at a beer joint near Stanford called Rozates. So much more fun then than now.

I miss the Folk Song era. It was music I could sing along with. My boyfriend and I went to the Oklahoma State Fair in the 60's because the guys were performing on the stage. They were friendly and took to us right away. We were invited to ride with them in fabulous convertible-what a terrific time for two college kids who drove in from Kansas.

lucky you would have loved to have met George sadly he died young of a Heart Problem as i recall and their Bass playing friend sadly died not to long after this was taped. understand this song was written while Gordon was in England, but then recently read it was here on this side of the pond

We were very fortunate to have grown up in the 60s and have been able to see and hear our favorites.

The Kingston Trio were instrumental in starting and nurturing my love of folk music. Their harmonies are truly special and it's too bad they haven't been discovered by folks today. Very special icons of the Bay Area.

Had dinner with George Grove and the "last" Kinston Trio while in Albany NY in May 2017. It was great to be with them and like fine wine, they get better with age!

for some reason i love this version better then the origional, guess its the blend of voices and the bass guitar

@rob9641 for me it is that bass guitar in the back just adds something to the song

First heard them in Namibia (then South West Africa) in the mid-1960s, never forgotten them since. Such fresh-faced young men, they (and we South African admirers) were all so innocent then. My LP of them has long been lost, just a joy to find and listen to them on TH-cam after all these years. God bless them.

I actually prefer this version of the song to the 'Stewart Trio's' rendition. George Grove's wonderful masterful banjo playing simply makes this song for me. You will never meet a nicer guy.

I can understand why you like this version better, it's the masterful George crows banjo playing which makes a considerable difference. John recorded and played this song with the 12 string which made it a completely different sound. I think it's kind of hard to choose which version is better, because I like both, what I like about John's version is, the finger picking of the 12-string guitar, which gave the Continental completely different sound. Then you must speak of George Grove. He doesn't merely play the banjo, and to me George is one of the greatest banjo players that's ever lived. Haven't seen him a few times, and meeting him, he has the whole banjo experienced. I would say that he is the Jimi Hendrix of the banjo. But I still go back to John's banjo playing, he wasn't as technical has George. But by 1964 when he started playing the 12th string, he added a completely different dimension to the Kingston trio sound. Nick, bob, and John, did a great version of this song on The Andy Williams show. So that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Keep listening my friend because the Kingston trio never get old. As Bobby would say aloha!

Bob said they were doing the song with the exact original 1955 lyrics to show that not much has changed since then...the video and his comment was recorded in 1981...here we are nearly 30 years later and his comment - and the lyrics - are still true!

Nice to see Roger Gambill. I never got to see him on TV or live. All the CDs I have are Bob/Nick/Dave or Bob/Nick/John (with one exception of Bob/George/Bob).
I also really like Gordon Lightfoot, and usually someone else redoing someone else's song isn't nearly as good, but this is a grand exception. The Trio doing "Early Morning Rain" is one of my favourites.

Thanks for this! The jokes are priceless. Merry Minuet: Ah, the xenophobia song. I remember hearing it as child and wondering why the world was like this. Have learned since that old hatreds die hard. But a few things change with generations and years of peace. The French, Germans and Poles don't hate each other anymore. Small consolation. New hatreds have replaced the old.

Gordon Lightfoot is Not an Indian, And American from Montana that came to Canada to avoid the American Draft- The only Draft in Canada is beer, or the North wind in the winter. I listened to Gordon every Friday at Steeles Tavern on Younge St in Toronto 1966 -67 Upstairs were I could drink under age. Lightfoot is now a Canadian and a recipient of the Order of Canada - Kinda like a Knighthood for you Yanks.

Gordon Lightfoot is from Orillia, Ontario and is Canadian born. He has consistently refused to emigrate to the United States. The name Lightfoot is of English origin along the same line as Shakespeare. I too used to go to the small taverns in the Yorkville district of Toronto where many Canadian Artists got their start in the 1960's.

Sounds similar to the original. Not bad at all. When I saw them a few years later, Nick Reynolds had rejoined Bob Shane at that time. That’s when I was so Fortunate to meet them, had several beers with Bob Shane, and got autographs!
