Nick passed in 2008, Bob in 2019. George Grove is still living and has formed a group with Rick Dougherty and Jerry Siggins called the Folk Legacy Trio. They are terrific.
It was an immeasurable blessing to have seen them live many times, and to have interviewed each of them during those later years. They finished their race far, far better than most did.
Wow, Bob Shane, the lead guy, is playing a Martin D45 guitar, and well... he should! Also Neil Young, and Paul Simon, play D45 originals. (I think Bob's is an original, but not sure.) The anniversary D45's are $13,000 guitars! The originals I think sell for over $100,000. They're such an impressive guitar I can say the reason I recognize them is because I can even brag I was almost given one, Martin's D45 special anniversary edition! A guy who liked my music handed it to me just moments before I was going to perform and I couldn't because I had played on a nylon string guitar so long I was afraid I'd mess up. I think he was quite disappointed and another man later quietly said to me, "You know, he gives people guitars..." Blew my chance! You gave a concert in Miami Florida either in the late 1950s or 1960. That was my very first concert. Your music has always meant so much to me that I can't begin to put it into words. There are many precious memories attached to it. Thank you.
Hoyt Axton wrote "Greenback Dollar" and I saw him do it live at his show at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach around 1967. I also played it on my FM radio show in Orange County before that. I also played Steppenwolf's "Goddamn The Pusher" and "I Like Marijuana" by David Peel &The Lower East Side. We played everything the lame-O AM, Top 40 stations couldn't. Yes, I got in trouble sometimes.
The KT had an unhappy breakup in 1960 or so,, which is when Dave Guard left. Bob and Nick stayed, joined by John Stewart. That group retired in 1967. Bob reformed the group and this group of Nick, Bob and George Grove went from the early 80s to the early 90s. The formation that lates the longest was George, Rick Dougherty and Bill Zorn, from about 2003 to 2017.
Yes Guard had left many years before. He was in my opinion one of the best, as a vocalist,musician and performer. He was the only real musician in the trio, he could ready music and play dozens of instruments as well as having a fine voice. I thin Bob Shane possibly did him dirty, from a financial standpoint, and don't forget Shane sold the rights (just before he died) to the name Kingston Trio to this inept tribute band, this disallowing the final version of KT to use the trademarked name. He was a great performer but in the end, he sold the legacy of the Trio down the river. Has anyone seen these amateurs.?

My brother and I saw them many times at The Crystal Grande Theater in Wisconsin Dells. I grew up listening to their albums in the 1960s.
