I can’t imagine why people fuss about one singer’s version being better than another’s....it’s like fighting over who gets the best crayons back in kindergarten! _Every single musician_ brings their own magic to everything they do, so we get to see and hear the magic that each possesses, without having to buy records!! We all have our personal favorites, people, so don’t be rude and knock what other people like!
Please see my comment; here is a Sinatra not often seen. Aside from the simple presentation, different performers, esp. in the 50 & 60s, have corny vocal accompaniments ~ Leonard Cohen's earlier works on TH-cam demonstrate this; point being that there are differences with each singer's own body of work. You can allow for personal taste, but to throw out all critical (objective) evaluation isn't doing anyone any favors. Sinatra is known for his phrasing, but that can vary with orchestral arrangements (Nelson Riddle, etc.), but here it's on display ~ & I'm not even a Sinatra buff; more often Tony Bennett does a "warmer" cover IMHO. It's not "fuss" (or necessarily "rude") to consider one artistic rendering over another.

Sinatra carefully planned his performances. He knew exactly when he was going to take a breath, and when to fill his lungs with air. His trademark long phrasing is remarkable. It wasn't natural; it was discipline that few singers have. There are stories about learning it all from Tommy Dorsey, but it's apparent that the "never break a phrase if you can help it" rule came from singing to those screaming girls in the front rows who were hanging on every word. Dorsey's also didn't seem to take breaths, but the technique is different for horns. Singers do it differently. So he perfected the technique and even discussed it in some detail in a late-in-life interview with Larry King.
My father, a successful musician himself and a great admirer of Frank Sinatra told me that Frank used to swim underwater to improve and maintain his wonderful breath control. Nobody controls phrasing like Sinatra did. I’m not sure anyone ever will.

Nat King Cole was also a great singer. But there are certain songs that define certain singers. For Nat, Nature Boy and Unforgettable are song that "belong" to him. Sinatra could not touch them. However, songs like Heres that Rainy Day, My Way, It Was a Very Good Year belong to Sinatra.
Agree with you 100%. Sinatra on several occasions would refuse to cover a song that he felt was done so well by another singer, that he would be compared unfavorably. There weren't many but Nat King Cole probably led that list of singers that he wouldn't go near.
The cigarette was a stage prop for him, as a cocktail glass was also from time to time. If you watch him closely, you'll see he doesn't't inhale, but blows it out fairly quickly to get a breath for the next verse. He was the consumet performer.
JImmy Van Heusen song. This guy wrote great stuff, and he and Sinatra were close friends. Chester knew all Sinatra's foibles, but as James Kaplan put it so well in his wonderful book 'Frank the Voice', "Jimmy might bad-mouth Frank behind his back (and he meant it when he did), he might hate him at times and even fear him, yet he also loved him, as much as he could love anybody. And when the little bastard sang, Chester got more goose bumps than anyone else." Sometimes Frank could draw both love and hate from his friends and associates--occasionally at the same time.
He recorded this years later for his color tv show in 68 along with other songs, the action took place in a hotel room and ended with him leaving in a car
Yes, as part of a three-song medley (Rodgers & Hart's It Never Entered My Mind was one of the others) -- a gem of a video that opens with the sound of rain and thunder claps outside the hotel room where Frank is singing. He really never have gotten over her. Francis Albert Sinatra paid Ava's funeral.
It can be argued that, vocally, Nat Cole´s tv performance of '...Rainy Day' (Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke) came through more successfully than Sinatra's own here. But, imo, the latter's interpretive nuances in the 'No One Cares' album, under Gordon Jenkins, is unsurpassable.

This would have been one such rare event someone wise captured for posterity. Wonder who? And whether this was a network or 'local' station recording. Well I saw plenty of videos where he and Dean Martin and Sammy Davis JR too, appear to smoke for real, with smoke coming out of their sticks. Prop or not, there must have been pretty smoky on that stage.
I don't know about the Rat Pack stuff. They weren't serious musical performances. This song is a standard going back 65. Jazz musicians love to play it, and Sinatra performs it here beautifully. I don't know why anyone would care about smoke in a TH-cam clip anyway. It's not going to get on your clothes! Aside from that, secondary smoke may be unpleasant to you but it's not a real health hazard. It's easy for a "scientist" to get a grant if he promises to conclude that secondary smoke causes lung cancer and heart disease. But you have to come to the "correct" conclusion if you want the money. It's horribly corrupt.
I am an ex smoker LOL and a heavy one. I am not about to preach the hazards of nicotine here, I am not that stupid, I just wonder how they didn't care how it affected their singing. I lost my beautiful soprano and breathing due to it, that's for sure. I feel sorry for all smokers who still do. No more discussion about this silly topic. Sorry I started it.

Great album. But my favorite is the 1959 Live in Australia concert with Red Norvo. Not sure who's backing him up here, but it's a very nice recording.
