The first big fully homebrew adventure I ever made for my home game (which started as Dragon of Ice Spire Peak😂) was a heist on a gigantic library/temple of knowledge in order to rerieve books that contained information on an ancient conflict that had been redacted from history.
It quickly became clear to me that i had bitten off more than I was ready for haha. Prepping and designing it was a struggle and my inexperience in the designing/running of some of the investigation and mystery solving elements led to one or two instances of frustration for my players.
By some miracle we made it through the arc and with some memorable highlights even, I think I was able to mask most of it but looking back I cringe a little at how rough some of my prep for it truly was. I often find myself thinking of ways I could have done it better.
This video has some great advice! I wish I had had back then lol😅 but definitely got some ideas spinning if anything similar comes up in the future.

Some of the best learned lessons come from biting off more than we can chew. Thanks for sharing your story! It sounds like an epic one.

Day 22 of asking Tim to run a recorded one shot and make videos about his thought process during play!

Glad it was helpful! I really enjoy heists. Enough so that I've avoided reading the Golden Vault book so that I can play in a heist campaign on Saturdays. It's a struggle to be good!! :D

@@DM-Timothy Lol, I get it. I own most of the 5e campaigns, but I haven't read the ones I haven't run. Hoping to get to play them.

Hey Timothy, I'm new to the realm of Professional DMing. Have you done a video on what makes a successful pro DM, specifically, and if its a worthwhile thing to do professionally

I'm never sure whether links in comments are going to work, BUT, here's one: th-cam.com/video/K_PbaHpfgA4/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
It covers a good portion of my experience on the topic. A short answer to add to it: Treating it professionally and having fun with your players successes leads to success and how worthwhile will depend upon your goals, for me, it is my primary income.

"Heists are can be as all get out sometimes" - I think you make great content but what the hell is this sentence even trying to convey? I'm curious how you make a living as a dm to be honest. I can only assume you have some other income streams.

Lol, the automatic captions deceived you there. "Can be" is "Campy" :)
DMing is my primary income stream. I run 6 paid games a week through Startplaying.games and it pays my bills and the like. TH-cam is technically my only other income stream... But it costs me more than it makes me at this stage. I live pretty modestly compared to some, I guess.

@@DM-Timothy oh it wasnt the captions, it's what I thought I heard. I rewound it like 5 times :)

@@mrcuddles100 lol, fair enough! The captions thought they heard that, too, so can't blame you there! Campy was the word. :D
