These cars are actually pretty cool. The Rockford system bumps. The Aisin-Warner 6spd is awesome. They are about as fast as a 350Z, which is slow, but in a car that looks as girly as this you can catch some people sleeping.
The 3G Eclipse is plenty cool in my opinion. Better looking than the 2G, and I personally don't need turbos to have fun. Slower cars are way more fun for everyday anyways.
I have a 2007 4 cylinder Mitsubishi Eclipse and it has a hundred fifty miles and it still runs like a new car because I've maintained it so well. Great cars
I used to think the gt's with the big wing were so cool looking when I was in high school. I saw a yellow one like 2 weeks ago and still turned my head.
Mitsubishi did have a concept with an Evo....everything, pretty much (the Ralliart Concept, I think). As far as I understand, they didn't go through with it cause it could've possibly encroached on the Evo. The old GSXs worked cause we didn't have 90's Evos, so the Eclipses were our coupe substitute. But once Mitsu decided to bring over the Evo, that killed all reason to put the AWD and 4G63 into Eclipses. Could be wrong, but that's what it seems from what I've heard.
KoenigseggFan21 You're wrong. They canned the turbo performance Eclipse in 1999, while the Evo didn't appear here until 2003. The real reason the Evo showed up was because Subaru brought the WRX over in 2002. My first car was a GSX in 2000. I felt extra cool after "The Fast and the Furious " came out.
Pube83 For the 3G Eclipse, as far as I know there were never plans, or even concepts shown with 4G63 power and AWD. But there was at least the concept for the 4G, which is what I'm talking about. By that point we already had the Evo. If it was the 3G we were talking, then that'd be a different story.
It would have stole a lot of sales from the Evo your bang on the money there, can't have a lower spec car out selling the top model that's just poor business sense. Even when you think about it who'd buy a 4 door when you can have a 2 door sport coupe with the exact same stuff in it.
I have a 4th Gen Eclipse GT, and the car gets a ton of looks. While not a supercar, it definitely can take off, and do love the sound of the engine and exhaust.
Fast forward to 2024 ... glad to see a review from the times when I started watching, about a car that might have been in my end of the market. I'm glad you've been able to do the new things you're doing, too, but this was a nice stroll down memory lane! A mix would be nice.
This generation of eclipse isn't that bad. Obviously it's not the goat it could've been, like 1g and 2g, but they make solid power and are DIRT CHEAP now
That isn't an Eclipse actually. It is the FTO redesign for America. I really liked the FTO with the 2.0 V6 and was looking to buy one if they brought it over, so much disappointment.
I absolutely love this generation Eclipse. No turbo so its more reliable, easy to work on because it's a single cam. MIVEC helps alot on the power and fuel economy. I agree i wish it was all wheel drive, but it's still an awesome ride. Here in Puerto Rico we take the V6 MIVEC and put them in 2000 mirages and everything else for that matter. A well built engine and trany
Had one of these in the family for about 10 years. Not a fan. Here is a list of major turn offs: 1. Valve lash needed to be adjusted on a frequent basis, but only on half the valves. Cost cutting on Mitsubishi's side. 2. Huge turning circle (42ft IIRC) 3. Poor visibility 4. Cheap plastic interior (door handles!) 5. Catalytic converter failure right outside of warranty (common problem) 6. EVAP system leaks 7. Very poor NVH at highway speed, having the upgraded stereo did not help. 8. Steering wheel did not telescope Pros: 1. Strong acceleration 2. Throaty exhaust 3. Hatchback versatility 4. Sport seats 5. Unique styling made it stand out
@@daudivilla you can't judge your experience off of one guy tho.. Go out there and try it to see if you like it.. I'd say yeah, but idk what you like, so just go out and try it
@@daudivilla Hell yeah I would! As a GT, the 4G Eclipse is plenty fast and fun to drive, plus good baggage space for a swoopy hatchback coupe. Go drive one!
You must of either just had a bad apple or bought one that wasn't maintained properly by previous owners. Because i belong to a couple forums and i never here these problems with the 4th Gen Eclipses. The only one is the turn radius and the poor visibility. Then there is the clear coat that peels off on some of the cars. They had a recall for that problem though. Normally they are extremely reliable cars with no major maintenance issues as long as you maintain them every 5k miles or so.
1G and 2G Eclipses which had AWD turbo versions were followed up by 3G and 4G which were heavier, slower and had no turbo AWD versions. That's why I hate them.
TCMustang If this eclipse had a better suspension setup and was around 3300 pounds it would be an amazing car. Its got plenty of power, just too much weight. Iv been in one that was stripped and also had another 100 or so pounds taken off through lighter aftermarket parts and it felt much better. It would easily take on a golf r(not the newer ones) with good suspension and a few pounds taken off.
ЕХИДНЫЙ 3G was built on the Stratus/Sebring chassis. GTO platform was mostly unique, but a few things/dimensions have been found to be shared with 2G DSMs.
Gen 2 was beautiful with RX7 FD aspirations. Gen 3 was the illegitimate child of a Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Sebring. Gen 4 was a Salvador Dahli interpretation of a short wheelbase Pontiac Grand Prix.
I had a '99 GSX, two '01 models, an '08, and now an '07 which is in immaculate condition, leather interior, power everything, and is the best version I've owned yet. GT's are very rare, and took a while to find after some asswipe lost control of his vehicle and hit my parked 2008. But the car looks and runs like it just came off the lot.
Years ago, this was definitely on the list of cars to buy during my tuner searches online. Nice to see I was right in thinking it wasn't nearly as bad as everyone said it was. T_T ✊

Fast forward and in 2024 this car’s whole appeal is a relatively large displacement v6, as posed to a turbo 4 found in everything these days. Few bolt ons and it’ll sound as it should.
Matt, Galant is Father of EVO. Galant VR4 to be exact. Remember Rally Days Galant was a Legend until Subaru then they took the VR4 and put the dynamics into the EVO enhanced by 10 or more lol... Trust me Matt being you so accustomed to a million HP 260 is not slow or shitty as you did say. And yes weight and driving dynamics plays major parts not just a zillion Hp. I know if Mitsu was to come back with any vigor whatever car they put out would be a got damn beast. 3000GT, Galant Ralliart,EVO,Eclipse are pretty much their only true bangers. Emphasis on 3000GT and EVO LOL!!!!!! Peace Matt you have the best channel something no one is doing period. Keep it up
This REALLY makes me want to see a Mitsubishi Diamante/Magna on this show! They're seriously underrated, even in Australia where they were built. It's like a step up Galant; Mitsubishi's own A32 Maxima, sorta with the powertrain from this eclipse. Solidly built, relaxed, but good steering, handling, accelerating/pulls and bang for $$. Mine even lights up stock tyres at t-junctions ;)
The 4g just didn't get the attention it deserved. I've had mine for years now, with 130,000 miles i still have no problem dusting these new turbo 4 cylinders, and older mustangs like my bros 4.6
I mean people either liked the quirky looks or hated it. A little bit ugly to me but if you can get a v6 manual in like really good condition for a low number then why not
Mitsu had plans on making a Ralliart version for this eclipse by offereing it with the 4g63t, carbon fibre body, performance brakes, suspensions and struts but the drivetrain remained FF. Theres a concept for it, you can search on youtube.
For its price its more than amazing. This is just a good starter car for people who wanna get off their feet but dont get one with too many miles on it.
If people could move out of the DSM past and accept that Mitsubishi isn't associated with Chrysler anymore (and wasn't when the 3G and 4G came out either) then maybe this car wouldn't get so much hate. I don't know about all people, but I personally couldn't care less that the 4G wasn't AWD, didn't have a turbo, and wasn't rebadged and sold as a Dodge and a Chrysler. Also, when people refer to this car and then a 2G, it's like they completely forget about everything that wasn't a GSX (when they're talking about AWD) or a GS-T (when they're talking about turbos). What I'm trying to say with that is that this is still an Eclipse for all the people who love to say it isn't. It's almost identical to the 2G RS. FWD and no 4g63. Pretty much the same to the 2G GS. FWD, difference being that the 4G didn't have the 4g63. Kind of similar to the 2G GS-T, because they're both FWD. Other than that, they don't share the turbocharged 4g63 that the 2G GS-T had. Biggest difference is that the 4G was sold as a Mitsubishi only, not sold as a Mitsubishi, Plymouth, and Eagle. So think about it this way. The 4G is the closest thing you'll get to a modern day 2G RS. The differences are the engine, the weight, and the fact that it wasn't rebadged and sold as three different cars.
Hey look someone with a brain lol. I daily a 3000gt sl and have a 350z as a weekend auto x car and I was looking at one of these GT's in the yellow sport trim with the hoop spoiler as a new daily i think they look great, even just taking one look at the details they put into the taillight design. The blind hate for this car is unjustified and stock for stock the v6 puts out more power than the 4g63 in the 1st and 2nd gen eclipse. The 4G would eat a good portion of modern day "sports cars" i.e. Brz's /MX-5's and would be neck and neck with the newer WRX's. Comfy seats and a kick ass sound system with a decent amount of power on tap sounds like a good daily to me.
@@xiw3stsid3ix37 Yeah, I bought one and it's my daily now. 2007 GT with a six speed manual. Speakers sound great, the exhausg sounds strong, and it's a great looking car. The only thing I don't like about it is the somewhat cheap-feeling interior. The door handles are known to break and feel very brittle and there's a decent amount of cheap creaky plastic.
So much hope when it first released for an awd version that never came. It had a proper tunnel for the drivetrain and everything. I miss my DSMs. Just traded in my 2006 eclipse GS for a Fiesta ST. Good to be back to proper forced induction again like my TSI... weird it's with Ford tho. How the times have changed and continue to move. Love the content!
I have always felt these body styles were the most under rated of any car, these lines are beautiful, flowing and the engine bay of this car if detailed would look mint and impressive. /shrug, I have always thought these were under appreciated.

As a former owner of a '92 Dodge Stealth R/T, a '92 R/T Twin Turbo and a '92 Eagle Talon TSi (AWD) [That they're all 1992 is a coincidence!!]... Pretty much anyone into the spirit of DSM cars HATED these Eclipses and for good reason... no soul.
Ellipsis of Triple Tap Any real DSM owner aould hate the 4th gen. I give the 3rd ALITTLE slack bc the bay is big enough to drop a 4g motor in but the 4th gen......nope nuh huh. No way
The previous generation of this Eclipse GT is the FTO from Japan with the NA 2.0 V6. The JDM FTO was sooo much better than this thing they made when they redesigned it and brought it to America.
Still driving my 06 V-6 manual as my daily driver and for runs down to Knoxville. 170k miles. New struts, alternator, clutch, water heater. Belt at 60k. Belt and pump etc at 120k. Belt at 150k to fix an annoying but minor oil leak. Issues: One catalytic converter throws an ODBII code periodically but easily cleared and no impact on engine performance. Suffers from the typical dash peel but have left it because it doesn't effect performance.
According to a couple different old reviews the Top of the range with every option ticked V6 coupe (excluding spyder) was 3550 pounds with a manual trans. Giving you 13.5 hp per pound, and they have a pretty typical Small coupe V6 Fwd weight distribution at 61% front 39% rear most are around 55/45 to 65/35 split. Personally I've driven them and I think if they had just offered a manual AWD platform there would have been so much potential in the aftermarket. Then you'd have the option for LSD's and putting on one of the S/C kits and even Turbo if you were a nut. Then the car wouldn't have gotten so much hate, because you can laugh it all you want but if you saw a S/C awd one running past you in a drag or in twistys, it would get a lot more respect. Sadly Mistubishi just wasn't really going to put much into their sports cars in this dying time for them in the 2000's till now other than the Evo. They've been in a really weird spot manufacturing not terrible daily commuters and cuv's but they're by no means exciting and the market is so saturated with other brands that may have nicer interiors or exteriors or more modern drivetrains with more power. Sadly I don't know if Mitsubishi is going to survive this continuing slump in the United States, they just seem to be leaning more and more towards pulling out of our market. I had a couple lancers and a Galant V6 back in 2000, also owned a 93 talon tsi, and I really enjoyed them all. It happens when you spend so much time in them and create lots of memories in them. But I understand why people don't buy them especially lately. Fix yourself Mitsubishi before you're just a car company I ask in ten years, "Hey remember when Mitsubishi was a company here and you could buy an EVO from a dealership?"
Just sorry the V6 GT is sooo rare, on the used car market, especially the very underrated convertible. That hatch, 6-speed, sunroof, leaher-seats in that smart pewter paint is a honey! Mitsubishi (three diamonds in Japanese,) made some scary aircraft during WW2!
I'm 17, know next to nothing about cars, and I drive one of these things (although mine is auto). Mine has been a little lowered which makes it look a little meaner, but it's funny how I have the exact same issue with the plastic handle on the inside of the door. As far as the average car goes, it's pretty reactive on the gas pedal and a lot of fun for a teenager. Especially since I got the thing for under 100k miles at $5,000!
Wth rockford fosgate is the shit, I use to install stereos and they are definitely better than most. The right door speakers from them along with a good amp and you don't even need a sub. I am planning on putting 4 RF speakers in my g35 sedan. Just look at their wiring kit compared to others, it's actually a lot of copper and not just copper coating. That shit melts right off when soldering with a torch.
I don't understand all the hate for the later ones. I test drove a 3rd gen with the V6, and it was surprisingly fast. I would have bought the thing, but I wanted to have a mechanic look at it first, and the owner sold it before I could.
The hate isn't because it's a bad car, but because it's a bad eclipse. The previous cars were smaller, stiffer, just generally a more nimble and energetic car. Basically, the previous eclipses were a lot like an evo coupe and the newer ones are much more like an accord coupe.
I have a 4 banger 3g eclipse that is my winter beater. The head is really fucked up and its lacking power alot because of it, backfires constantly, have to rev to 5k minimum to shift the next gear and the list goes on. BUT, it has been like this for 80,000 miles! This thing is fucking indestructible. Every person who knows cars can't believe the thing is still alive lol.
+Devin Stambolziovski I can back this up I have had 2 of the 4 cylinder 3G, and both cannot be killed. 60,000 miles as a farm car with rare oil changes from the previous owner. The thing won't die. Also beat the shit out of the thing, nothing. engine and trans are great. Every thing else.. Well it's hit or miss lol. On the other hand my 2 V6 eclipses both ended up fucking up in the engine and needing major work.
What people don't seem to understand is that the 2000's were a weird time for cars and sports cars weren't selling so to still have it as a sports car, they decided they will try to make it more upscale and honestly, I prefer the later gens over the first two because it just feels so much nicer and is so much more reliable than the other ones.. Yes it's not the fastest for the dollar, but it's actually pretty fast and can keep up with the GSX stock for stock if you put them side by side.. 0-60 is the same 7 seconds and the styling for its time was pretty revolutionary despite what most will tell you.. All they are made about is that it didn't have the Dickrider supreme 4G63 and AWD but if you ask them to tell you what else besides that and the looks they didn't like, they couldn't tell you shit, because the cars actually still ride pretty nice and have really good handler capabilities if not better without the AWD and 4 cylinders of old
I have a turboed 2nd gen eclipse. And i just got me an 06 eclipse gt with the 3.8l i got it knowing its not awd or turboed like my 2nd gen. But something about the naturally aspirated v6 with 6 speed that grabs my attention.i wanna get it over the 300 whp mark and call it good, as this will be my daily. I love the styling on these cars (not in stick form) but with a lowering kit, wheels and a few exterior enhancements, these things look sexy 🤤
That motor has variable cam timing AND variable valve lift, bolt ons it'll do 350crank, which is not bad, big displacement motors aren't so bad compared to some of the older laggy turbo 2.0's. Good value in a quick car.
Well, now that you've tamed that unicorn...request: 2006 Hyundai Sonata V6. Absolutely NOT a driver's car, but that 6 felt like it was making about 100 more ponies than advertised.

The 4g's are ass ugly stock, but there is a nice aftermarket for them, cosmetically stuff especially because of the stock looks.

This is a really good car. Very reliable. I actually think it has its own style...I mean, if looks very different than other cars out there. You got comfortable seats, good sound system and its not a beast but still fast.
Drove one of these. Fucking loved it.

These cars are actually pretty cool. The Rockford system bumps. The Aisin-Warner 6spd is awesome. They are about as fast as a 350Z, which is slow, but in a car that looks as girly as this you can catch some people sleeping.
I actually like the girly look on this.
I have a 3G eclipse manual with 300k miles on it, I know it gets shit on all the time, but it has been a reliable daily.
The 3G Eclipse is plenty cool in my opinion. Better looking than the 2G, and I personally don't need turbos to have fun. Slower cars are way more fun for everyday anyways.
Do you know how much mileage this car can get before you need a new transmission?
How’s the steering?
when I was a kid my mom drove the 1G eclipse gsx. I thought she had the coolest car ever growing up and still is a great car til this day.
I have a 2007 4 cylinder Mitsubishi Eclipse and it has a hundred fifty miles and it still runs like a new car because I've maintained it so well. Great cars

I like this owner, one of my fav owners. Informative, straightforward, yet down to earth wit his car. This was a great review!
Could be wrong, but that's what it seems from what I've heard.
i was thinking the same.
Totally right
KoenigseggFan21
You're wrong.
These cars drive very smooth i was impressed when i drove it for the first time, i really like the 3g tho its such an odd looking car that looks good
This generation of eclipse isn't that bad.

How reliable was the car? Im looking to buy the 2.4
I absolutely love this generation Eclipse.

I have a 2010 GT and drive it daily, it's a great dependable car. No major problems.
Had one of these in the family for about 10 years. Not a fan. Here is a list of major turn offs:
1. Valve lash needed to be adjusted on a frequent basis, but only on half the valves. Cost cutting on Mitsubishi's side.
2. Huge turning circle (42ft IIRC)
3. Poor visibility
4. Cheap plastic interior (door handles!)
5. Catalytic converter failure right outside of warranty (common problem)
6. EVAP system leaks
7. Very poor NVH at highway speed, having the upgraded stereo did not help.
8. Steering wheel did not telescope
Pros:
1. Strong acceleration
2. Throaty exhaust
3. Hatchback versatility
4. Sport seats
5. Unique styling made it stand out

Thank you do much for returning to a regular car. I like your exotic videos of course but the regular car videos on this channel are great.
1G and 2G Eclipses which had AWD turbo versions were followed up by 3G and 4G which were heavier, slower and had no turbo AWD versions. That's why I hate them.
3g built on gto-based platform the chassis stronger that 1g\2g
TCMustang If this eclipse had a better suspension setup and was around 3300 pounds it would be an amazing car. Its got plenty of power, just too much weight. Iv been in one that was stripped and also had another 100 or so pounds taken off through lighter aftermarket parts and it felt much better. It would easily take on a golf r(not the newer ones) with good suspension and a few pounds taken off.
ЕХИДНЫЙ 3G was built on the Stratus/Sebring chassis. GTO platform was mostly unique, but a few things/dimensions have been found to be shared with 2G DSMs.
im not telling it is same platform as gto.
Gen 2 was beautiful with RX7 FD aspirations. Gen 3 was the illegitimate child of a Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Sebring. Gen 4 was a Salvador Dahli interpretation of a short wheelbase Pontiac Grand Prix.
Idk why people are haters, these cars were great!
I own one and I dont hate it. Mine is 2007 and it still runs fantastic, great on gas and hauls balls. It's a myth it's the most hated car.

Fast forward and in 2024 this car’s whole appeal is a relatively large displacement v6, as posed to a turbo 4 found in everything these days. Few bolt ons and it’ll sound as it should.
I have to agree. 4 cylinder turbo cars are going to be all that is left for new affordable performance cars in the near future.
I got one of these when I was a senior in high school, it was great for what it was and he's right that sound system bumps!

The transition from the Stealth makes sense! Similar body style curves

1G and 2G with turbo and awd were pretty cool.
timespacedub the eclipse is the best
Owned a 1g, 2g, 3g, and 4g. Every single one of them has treated me fantastic.
If they implemented the railart version of the 4g the evo wouldve went out of business
So this has over 30,000hp?
TBustah I own a 2000 V6 Eclipse and I love it. Fun daily and has been really reliable for me.

If they did a turbo AWD sport version of this it would have been badass.
That motor has variable cam timing AND variable valve lift, bolt ons it'll do 350crank, which is not bad, big displacement motors aren't so bad compared to some of the older laggy turbo 2.0's. Good value in a quick car.
