It was, but it was due in part to the fact that we knew the puzzle mechanics. Plus they made no effort to integrate the stylus to the puzzle solving and a lot of the psynergies were a one-use gimmick instead of being employed throughout the game
i just bought this gba emulator on my phone for 5 bucks so i could play the golden sun games and replay ff tactics advance. the controls are pretty awkward on my phone screen, but it's fine for turn based games. even though i'd really like to play metroid and castlevania, not even gonna try it on my phone.

They took WAY to long to release the 3rd, that's why the sales were so poor. I grew up playing both GS1 and 2 and fell in love, and waited so patiently for a 3rd, but the years went by and I lost interest, assuming many others did as well. And the jump to 3D wasn't attractive whatsoever
On the contrary, the delay didn't cause a loss of interest. In fact, Dark Dawn was literally eaten by the hype generated by its waiting fanbase. But when you have a fanbase as niche as Golden Sun then one slightly underwhelming game can ripple quickly through the whole thing and generate massive backlashes.
I didn't even know about the Dark Dawn release. The whole Nintendo era with the Wii U and the upcoming 3DS was a really bad time, marketing-wise, for Nintendo.
I heard a rumour about Sakurai possibly teasing Issac in Smash on his Twitter. Imagine that reveal were to happen? It would certainly augur well for the possibility of a new Golden Sun game. I still think it’s so bizarre that Camelot’s potential is wasted making Nintendo sports games when they started as a JRPG studio.
Bad remasters ruin the name of the game anyway. Better not touch it. The games aged extremely well, myself i prefer GS1/2 Graphics than DD. Release a sequel finishing the story of DD and that's it. I am putting GS1 and Lost Age at the top of my all time favorite games. But i DO NOT want them to be remastered. They're perfect as they are. The magic the games captured cannot be replicated, especially now when the market is not directed to such titles. They would have to improve the engine of the game drastically. The outrage online is there due to one simple thing. Cliffhanger in DD. Do something with DD, not the first and second installments.

I don't see Square wasting that slot on irrelevant character that appeared on a game they don't own. Just like Hero, any new Square DLC will be used to promote their games/ports to Switch. They have a few they can easily port to Switch.
I haven't finished watching the video but I was recently (past 2 weeks) doing research on this precise subject. Turns out most of the key members of the Camelot team left between 2006-2008. When asked about it on 2008, the Takahashi brothers mentioned the current team wasn't quite fit for doing an RPG in the same vein as the ones they had developed before. This is also the reason why Mario Tennis titles after the GC one were quite bad. Nintendo pushed them to develop a new one after all the boom around the hoax Sun Soothslayer and because PSP had a WIDE array of JRPGs while the DS didn't have as many back then (this is arguable). Mario Sport titles have always sold well so it's not a surprise Nintendo pushes them into doing more of those. Golden Sun is one of my favorite sagas in the history of JRPGs. Sakurai has considered Isaac a lot for Smash since 2007 though. Isaac has gotten an assist trophy in 2 games and right now he is missing in the assist trophies listed for Smash Ultimate so we are either getting him as a playable character (like the jump from Little Mac from an assist trophy to playable character between Brawl and 4) or Nintendo are REALLY not keen into raising his popularity even more. Isaac was voted as one of the top choices for a new char in the Smash Ballot. I think if Isaac manages to land a spot in smash we could get a "Fire Emblem" situation in our hands. In any case, I see a steep rise in interest in the internet over these games, I wonder why.
I know if that does happen, the ebay market will skyrocket in prices for these games. That always happens when stuff like this occurs as most players probably haven't heard of these games prior to the character's inclusion in Smash. That's how we got Fire Emblem here in the States and some franchises have been revived because of Smash to various degrees of success and failure. We got a new Kid Icarus out of it plus Star Fox flopped like a fish. I hope maybe we get a new game for Golden Sun even if it's just one on the Switch.
drubio There been less mario sports games made over the years. Tennis games are the only ones still being made. Nintendo not pushing the developers to make mediocre games, that fault of the developers being too lazy to try something different and unique.

Just a small update for you all: a trademark was deposited in 2018 and got approved and issued in late october/start of november of 2019. for a new Golden Sun, it's not a renewal of one of the old trademarks. The only time it happened what before Dark Dawn announcement. Hype (ir)responsibly.

Long time fan of the GS series, and it’s really heartwarming to see yourself and others in the TH-cam community creating a lot of buzz about the games recently. Here’s hoping that enough talk will create a worthy sequel, or at the very least a spiritual successor

i know im in the minority, but i love dark dawn. ive been a fan of the series since 2005 and can say that it is in my top 3 favorite series for sure :)
TLA is hands down my favorite rpg of all time. Such a great game, and a piece of my high school life. I wish Dark Dawn would have been better than what it was.
I thought much of the dialogue in Dark Dawn went on for too long. Characters would simply not ... shut ... UP! Many conversations could have surely been cut in half.
Shining Force 2 was my first RPG ever. I had no idea the Golden Sun devs were behind it. That just makes me miss Golden Sun more. Both Golden Sun and Advance Wars seem to be 2 franchises that Nintendo won't ever look at.
With the success of the Switch and mulitple JRPGs selling better on the system than expected, with more announced, I think Nintendo may give Golden Sun another chance at the light. But, with the Xenoblade series showing that they can amass some good sales, and that is from an in-house developer, along with Square-Enix's Bravely series, I think Nintendo may be wary of the idea of resurrecting Golden Sun, unless they can do some remake in reintroduce and bring in new fans of the series. At the least, we do have Isaac as an Assist Trophy on Smash Bros. Ultimate.

You are absolutely right, Golden Sun was one of the best JRPG on Game Boy Advance especially and in portable consoles in general I played and beat the first two games and I love them too much, but I don't know anything about the third one it's a shame that there's not other games of the franchise, but as you say in the video and as we all know Nintendo doesn't allow failure or even decrease in sales..Not Golden Sun but also many great JRPG die the same way for the same reasons.
zied chourabi That is not really true. Pikmin 1, 2 and 3 have all sold pretty badly. The only reason Pikmin did not fade away, I'm assuming us because of Miyamoto's backing.
Cavin Stutts, Miyamoto is a video game designer but I think that he is not the one who took the decision to put an end to certain game despite of its success rather then it's the revenue and sales so since we are talking about the most famous video games production company I'm pretty sure that the income and the rise in sales is what really matter one of the most aspect to consider in a successful and popular game will always be a best seller (most notorious exp GTA games).
Ehh, Nintendo has been stubbornly making Star Fox titles at least until recently, despite the sales of the franchise steadily decreasing over the years. So it's not like underperforming in sales is an instant death sentence to a series at Nintendo.
I always liked Nintendo but i have awaked long ago to realise that Nintendo sucks and only launchs whathell noobs like. That's why no f-zero, no metroid, no mother, etcetera. Mostly mario, zelda and pkm. And besides noob games. Not the hardcore games they used to be. :p
Please revive this wonderful and beautiful series. Nothing can compare to the first 2 games. And I don't want a cameo of Isaac or Felix in Smash. True fans will want Golden Sun 4!

Wanted to add a little, first a lot of people (myself included) complained on the third game for having a cliffhanger ending, without there being a sequel in sight, no news no nothing at the time. Now I sadly don't have any sources, but I do remember there being an interview with one of the developers, and they said that a Golden Sun plot takes time to create, and they hadn't thought of any for a fourth game. Essentially they seemed weirded out that people were expecting a continuation, because they hadn't thought of one. Of course this could have been a response to kinda throw people off the reason you point towards, low sales numbers, but at least it seems there is more to this than might meet the eye
I can understand wanting to avoid spoiling it, and I respect that, only the way you summed up how people complained about it kinda sounded a little like people were overreacting or didn't have any good arguments. Like maybe you could have included it in the form of "people had a big problem with certain plot developments" or something alike, so the people in the know would understand a bit more. But yeah it's kind of hard really to talk about the negative reception of the game since it was pretty all over the place and a lot of people were... well I guess you could say less than respectful with their criticisms :/
Maybe if isaac shows up in smash it'll draw some attention to the series... they did the same thing with marth and roy in super smash bros melee and it was a successful startegy despite the pair not even having english lines in the western release.
The major killer for Golden Sun in my opinion came in the form of a double attack; one major attack, followed by a smaller one right after. 1) The major killer of the Golden Sun franchise is the huge gap between the 2nd and 3rd games in the franchise. If I recall right, it was about 8 years between those two....waaaaay too long for a sequel release. By 2010, most players have completely forgotten about the series, except the most diehard fans like myself. However, there would've been some hope for a rejuvenation, but then the smaller killer came along right after that in the form of... 2) Dark Dawn....the 3rd game in the series. Now don't get me wrong, Dark Dawn was a fantastic game in its own right. If it was a standalone game, the game would get a lot higher ratings than it did. The problem is that it followed the two prequels that were smashing successes, especially Lost Age. Both of them were so great in their own right, and loved by all. With such success, it's hard to follow up with a 3rd that could easily match them. Combine that with the few nuances with Dark Dawn (points of no return, and people claiming it was too easy...I disagree by the way, but that's a different thread for another day)...all add up to a game that didn't match up to its ancestors. The combination of these two unfortunately ended a potentially great story before its completion. I would love a rejuvenation....from the first game to the 3rd....release them every year....then release the sequel two years later until the story is completed. My apologies for the long post, but the death of the Golden Sun series was a huge tragedy for me, as it's my favorite RPG of all time

SF3 is one of my favourite games of all time and few people know of it. But it's nice to point to GS, another great series, and people do know it. For me GS was the spirtual successor of SF. It's a shame they never made a tactic version of it.
It's a shame the games lost traction after DD. Because DD was what I grew up playing as my first Golden Sun game. But as the comments mentioned, I agree. They took way too long to release the third version. Maybe if they had another 3d early console release it would've been different.
Golden sun was the rpg I fell in love with that I constantly played, the fact that it became one of Nintendo’s dead franchises makes me terribly sad. But I’m praying for Isaac to at least be added in smash
All Nintendo care about these days is Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, Smash Bors and Fire Emblem, they don't give a damn about Golden Sun. Speaking of which, another series Nintendo's involvement has killed off is Baten Kaitos (due to them wanting Monolith to make Xenoblade Chronicles games), I'm guessing that you'll be doing a video on that series too.
Tell that to the Takahashi brothers. They went ahead and created the game after getting drunk. It was as if they had no intentions of creating a third game because they thought the first two was complete. Also, it still has a chance. If kid icarus and punch out had 20+ years before it had a sequel, games that fans considered as dead, then Golden Sun still has thay chance. The problem with the 3rd game was the numerous points of no return and the disjointed mess of the story and messing with the established lore other than that, it still is a Golden Sun game albeit not as great. Think of it like this, if octopath traveller can have this much level of success, then a game like Golden Sun certainly has one too. Camelot is not like Monolith Soft, it is a smaller company with an equally smaller staff. But they could coordinate with Monolith Soft. Nintendo has been known to have multiple studios working and giving consultations on a single game (BOTW, smash). I've been a fan of Nintendo for 20+ years. And believe me, they still surprise me from time to time.
Terry 309 Nintendo has lots of things to worry about then a fail rpg series. Blame the developers for not making a good game. Blame them for piggybacking off of mario characters for greed. Nintendo don't need these sports games nor or they forcing anyone to make them. If that case monolith would be making mario spinoff too.

They should make a remastered version of the original duology trying to recover the original pre-rendered assets in a higher resolution (basically, those "rounded" CGI models they must have originally made in a more powerful computer before they digitised and compressed them into more pixelated sprites) and make high Res sprites from those, put the two games together so we could if we wanted, visit the inaccessible areas from GS1 in GS2. If they see that gets people's attention, then make GS4.

Rpg genre as a whole has been dying for a decade.Its sad but companies and the investors just produce simple first person shooter games,((not that the fps genre is bad,its just SUPER simple and CHEAPER to do compared to the undertaking of an rpg)) and the attention lacking newer generations has led to it.Many people just don't care about character development or stories or intricate customization systems in games anymore.They just want to fire the game and just pew pew.Rpg genre is kind of an intellectual genre so it just dosent sell as much anymore cause of the new demographics,so the markets just respond and you see the new shallower gaming experiences you see now.
Japanese game development is coming back full time after a decade of suffocating. Just these past few months have seen a lot of games coming out. Making niche games with ambitions such as the ones jrpg games have is not easy, and I mean profitability.

I would even be happy to see a Golden Sun & GS:TLA remake, with the graphics and gameplay tweaks from GS:DD, maybe new puzzles and dungeon maps (like a Golden Sun "master quest"). Would probably be on the Switch, so they could release it as one big game as originally intended.
I bloody loved this series as a kid, makes me sad to see what happened. These days technology is good enough they shouldn't stick with nintendo. They probably wouldn't be able to work on Golden sun franchise, but at least then they could probably make games for the smaller, more passionate JRPG audience!
The only thing I can agree with is that the the game was way too easy. The battles had so much to offer but I barely could use any of the mechanics cuz almost every enemy died with about 1 or 2 basic attacks.
Dark Dawn was dissapointing in deed, not awful but, compared to the first 2 ones, it was everything the fans said, easy, bland and maybe the rush on making your team of full 8 characters in a short time contributed to make some of them really weak, like Himi or even Eoleo in some extent (Nowell was annoying but at least she was shown just for a short time so no way to develope her character)
It surprises me that in every video of Golden Sun no one talks about the petitions (yes, the ones like change.org). I know they often don’t work, BUT I truly KNOW that the fans CAN make the difference. From another game, the Zero Escape series, the games are LOVED in America but not in Japan, so the third game was on hiatus for years. Meanwhile, the fans created a group the “Blue Bird Operation” and guess what, they truly made the creator of the games to want to release it, and we had the third game of the Zero Escape series. I remember back in 2010 signing a petition for the Golden Sun like “oh, yeah, it will be achieved in no time”. Even there are a few for the Golden Sun, NONE HAS REACHED ITS GOAL. It’s very sad srsly, what’s even worse, we can see how little fans care about GS or that we are a very few fans... It’s not like signing those petitions will bring us a new game, but at least it tells me that we aren’t even 13k fans... It breaks my heart for the creators that they NEVER got their “if there are enough fans”
Camelot has a close relationship with Nintendo, but they're not exclusively their dev company....Camelot has also been responsible for Sony's Hot Shots Golf franchise. also if they couldn't guarantee a sequel they should have ended on an actual ENDING rather than a goddamn cliffhanger....the cliffhanger ending to Dark Dawn is one of the biggest reasons fans are dying for a new entry ( with the series just being great RPGs being the biggest overall...alongside the incredible soundtrack and lovable characters )
I guess we can say smash ultimate is our only hope to revive this series, but even then I dont even know if we'd get what we've been waiting for. Most of is current fanbase is the dedicated that've been there since the 1st game. We've been waiting so long our expectations are high, that we'd be happier without a sequel than another Dark dawn.
One theory that i always had in mind was this. I think after the lost age,many key members of camelot decided to leave because they were sick and tired of nintendo bossing them around to make more fucking mario sports games and that's why dark dawn felt so average. You can say they got burnt out by the rpg genre,i don't think that's the case though,camelot had created many great rpgs beforehand,like shining force 3 which is regarded as the best in the series,so this team definitely had a talent for rpgs. Now imagine how demoralizing it must have felt for some people to be making mario sports games instead of rpgs that they wanted,so they said ''screw you mario'' and left. That's just a personal assumption of course. Golden sun,definitely on my most beloved rpgs of all time.The points that made it so amazing to me were,first of all,using your magic outside battles to solve puzzles and interacting with the enviroment in general,i wish more games had that. Cities felt like small dungeons,every city had a secret/basement/cave that could be explored,with a treasure at the end of it. That made cities feel interesting instead of places where you just buy gear from. Third,the fact that NPCs had a lot of lines. You can mind read them,which almost doubled their lines,but wait there's more! NPCs also reacted to events around them,which meant that they had even more lines of dialogue!This really made the npcs seem like real people instead of just useless sprites.
I have only played the DS one, I need to go back and play the other two I guess if they are better. My biggest problem with the DS one is that it was far to easy, but its more than that it was wasted potential. It had all kinds of cool spells,skills, and If I remember correctly even combined attacks but you never had to use any of it. If you did even bosses would almost die instantly, it was such a waste of a battle system they obviously put a lot of thought into. Other then that the game was fun though yeah the story might not of been perfect but it had fun dungeons,cool puzzles and a interesting world. I would still recommend the 3rd one just go in knowing that it is far to easy.
Martino Magic the DS game did really poorly. The gba games were harder combat wise, and the puzzles are longer and harder as well. It puts DD puzzles to shame, since they are almost nonexistent in DD. I would definitely recommend the gba games even if you have to emulate.
I will for sure check them out because I did really like everything but the easy aspect of the DS one. I am a huge puzzle RPG fan since one of my first and favorite games of all time was Lufia 2. As always the biggest problem is just finding the time to get to them haha.
I would like to see the entire Golden sun franchise get a proper remaster for current gen. Story is brilliant. but battle wise, GS1 entire new specs for Isaac's party. buff the party up so they play like Felix's party does in GS Lost age. Isaac's party is rediculously weak no matter how high a level he is. Dark Dawn's combat can also be tweaked. make leveling up take longer and the battles more difficult.
I will tell you what happened: stupid ”fans” destroyed any good ratings of the 3rd game by just b*tching about the ”bad” instead of ever mentioning more positives. Their reasoning? Criticizing a product is a need to improve the next. The end result? Nintendo gave no sh*ts about producing a 4th title. Meanwhile, WE the true fans can let go of some bad about the 3rd game, and as one who finished all games, I loved them all. Anyone who hated DD was a stupid liar, cause the game was GOOD, regardless of some bad points about it.
I couldn't agree with you more. Sometimes the Internet itself is the reason why many franchises fail because some games fail to meet the majorities' expectations. It's kinda lame but that's how marketing and capitalism unfortunately work.

The reason why GSDD ended that way was Nintendo pulled back most money that they offered to the Takahashi brothers/their GS project, and afaik firced them to release the game to release sooner! I mean the game gets rushed towards the end, and you cansee/feel it. I see GS3 as a mix of GS1 & 2 with little advancing that point. Oh and Stella/Sveta felt like the 2ndary main protagonist later on with her importance of the story.
Perhaps if Nintendo made Golden Sun 1&2 available on the eshop and developed a *proper* sequel to those stories, then perhaps the franchise would catch on with more people.
Erick Landon RPG Well the biggest problem is people just don't know about it. When they finally get a chance to play it, they love it. I didn't even know the series existed until around 2013 when I played it on emulator by random chance. By this point you couldn't get copies of the games anywhere. I'm not a fan of dark dawn. I don't want to pick up the story 30 years later after such a massive cliff hanger.

They took WAY to long to release the 3rd, that's why the sales were so poor. I grew up playing both GS1 and 2 and fell in love, and waited so patiently for a 3rd, but the years went by and I lost interest, assuming many others did as well. And the jump to 3D wasn't attractive whatsoever
On the contrary, the delay didn't cause a loss of interest. In fact, Dark Dawn was literally eaten by the hype generated by its waiting fanbase. But when you have a fanbase as niche as Golden Sun then one slightly underwhelming game can ripple quickly through the whole thing and generate massive backlashes.
I didn't even know about the Dark Dawn release. The whole Nintendo era with the Wii U and the upcoming 3DS was a really bad time, marketing-wise, for Nintendo.

I heard a rumour about Sakurai possibly teasing Issac in Smash on his Twitter. Imagine that reveal were to happen? It would certainly augur well for the possibility of a new Golden Sun game. I still think it’s so bizarre that Camelot’s potential is wasted making Nintendo sports games when they started as a JRPG studio.
That would definitely be helpful to the series, but I'm guessing physical copies of the games would skyrocket if that were to happen.
He would be my main and I'd gladly pay $100 or more for his amiibo if that was the case.

Bad remasters ruin the name of the game anyway. Better not touch it. The games aged extremely well, myself i prefer GS1/2 Graphics than DD. Release a sequel finishing the story of DD and that's it.
I am putting GS1 and Lost Age at the top of my all time favorite games. But i DO NOT want them to be remastered. They're perfect as they are.
The magic the games captured cannot be replicated, especially now when the market is not directed to such titles. They would have to improve the engine of the game drastically.

I don't see Square wasting that slot on irrelevant character that appeared on a game they don't own. Just like Hero, any new Square DLC will be used to promote their games/ports to Switch. I haven't finished watching the video but I was recently (past 2 weeks) doing research on this precise subject. Turns out most of the key members of the Camelot team left between 2006-2008. When asked about it on 2008, the Takahashi brothers mentioned the current team wasn't quite fit for doing an RPG in the same vein as the ones they had developed before. This is also the reason why Mario Tennis titles after the GC one were quite bad. Nintendo pushed them to develop a new one after all the boom around the hoax Sun Soothslayer and because PSP had a WIDE array of JRPGs while the DS didn't have as many back then (this is arguable). Mario Sport titles have always sold well so it's not a surprise Nintendo pushes them into doing more of those. Golden Sun is one of my favorite sagas in the history of JRPGs. Sakurai has considered Isaac a lot for Smash since 2007 though. Isaac has gotten an assist trophy in 2 games and right now he is missing in the assist trophies listed for Smash Ultimate so we are either getting him as a playable character (like the jump from Little Mac from an assist trophy to playable character between Brawl and 4) or Nintendo are REALLY not keen into raising his popularity even more. Isaac was voted as one of the top choices for a new char in the Smash Ballot. I think if Isaac manages to land a spot in smash we could get a "Fire Emblem" situation in our hands. In any case, I see a steep rise in interest in the internet over these games, I wonder why.

I know if that does happen, the ebay market will skyrocket in prices for these games. That always happens when stuff like this occurs as most players probably haven't heard of these games prior to the character's inclusion in Smash. That's how we got Fire Emblem here in the States and some franchises have been revived because of Smash to various degrees of success and failure. We got a new Kid Icarus out of it plus Star Fox flopped like a fish. I hope maybe we get a new game for Golden Sun even if it's just one on the Switch.
drubio There been less mario sports games made over the years. Tennis games are the only ones still being made. Nintendo not pushing the developers to make mediocre games, that fault of the developers being too lazy to try something different and unique.

Just a small update for you all: a trademark was deposited in 2018 and got approved and issued in late october/start of november of 2019. for a new Golden Sun, it's not a renewal of one of the old trademarks. The only time it happened what before Dark Dawn announcement.

Shining Force 2 was my first RPG ever. I had no idea the Golden Sun devs were behind it. That just makes me miss Golden Sun more. Both Golden Sun and Advance Wars seem to be 2 franchises that Nintendo won't ever look at.

With the success of the Switch and mulitple JRPGs selling better on the system than expected, with more announced, I think Nintendo may give Golden Sun another chance at the light. But, with the Xenoblade series showing that they can amass some good sales, and that is from an in-house developer, along with Square-Enix's Bravely series, I think Nintendo may be wary of the idea of resurrecting Golden Sun, unless they can do some remake in reintroduce and bring in new fans of the series. At the least, we do have Isaac as an Assist Trophy on Smash Bros. Ultimate.

You are absolutely right, Golden Sun was one of the best JRPG on Game Boy Advance especially and in portable consoles in general I played and beat the first two games and I love them too much, but I don't know anything about the third one it's a shame that there's not other games of the franchise, but as you say in the video and as we all know Nintendo doesn't allow failure or even decrease in sales..Not Golden Sun but also many great JRPG die the same way for the same reasons.
zied chourabi That is not really true. Pikmin 1, 2 and 3 have all sold pretty badly. The only reason Pikmin did not fade away, I'm assuming us because of Miyamoto's backing.
Cavin Stutts, Miyamoto is a video game designer but I think that he is not the one who took the decision to put an end to certain game despite of its success rather then it's the revenue and sales so since we are talking about the most famous video games production company I'm pretty sure that the income and the rise in sales is what really matter one of the most aspect to consider in a successful and popular game will always be a best seller (most notorious exp GTA games).
Ehh, Nintendo has been stubbornly making Star Fox titles at least until recently, despite the sales of the franchise steadily decreasing over the years. So it's not like underperforming in sales is an instant death sentence to a series at Nintendo.
I always liked Nintendo but i have awaked long ago to realise that Nintendo sucks and only launchs whathell noobs like.

Wanted to add a little, first a lot of people (myself included) complained on the third game for having a cliffhanger ending, without there being a sequel in sight, no news no nothing at the time. Now I sadly don't have any sources, but I do remember there being an interview with one of the developers, and they said that a Golden Sun plot takes time to create, and they hadn't thought of any for a fourth game. Essentially they seemed weirded out that people were expecting a continuation, because they hadn't thought of one. Of course this could have been a response to kinda throw people off the reason you point towards, low sales numbers, but at least it seems there is more to this than might meet the eye

I can understand wanting to avoid spoiling it, and I respect that, only the way you summed up how people complained about it kinda sounded a little like people were overreacting or didn't have any good arguments. Like maybe you could have included it in the form of "people had a big problem with certain plot developments" or something alike, so the people in the know would understand a bit more. But yeah it's kind of hard really to talk about the negative reception of the game since it was pretty all over the place and a lot of people were... well I guess you could say less than respectful with their criticisms :/
Maybe if isaac shows up in smash it'll draw some attention to the series... they did the same thing with marth and roy in super smash bros melee and it was a successful startegy despite the pair not even having english lines in the western release.

The major killer for Golden Sun in my opinion came in the form of a double attack; one major attack, followed by a smaller one right after.
1) The major killer of the Golden Sun franchise is the huge gap between the 2nd and 3rd games in the franchise. If I recall right, it was about 8 years between those two....waaaaay too long for a sequel release. By 2010, most players have completely forgotten about the series, except the most diehard fans like myself. However, there would've been some hope for a rejuvenation, but then the smaller killer came along right after that in the form of...
2) Dark Dawn....the 3rd game in the series. Now don't get me wrong, Dark Dawn was a fantastic game in its own right. If it was a standalone game, the game would get a lot higher ratings than it did. The problem is that it followed the two prequels that were smashing successes, especially Lost Age. Both of them were so great in their own right, and loved by all. With such success, it's hard to follow up with a 3rd that could easily match them. Combine that with the few nuances with Dark Dawn (points of no return, and people claiming it was too easy...I disagree by the way, but that's a different thread for another day)...all add up to a game that didn't match up to its ancestors.
The combination of these two unfortunately ended a potentially great story before its completion. I would love a rejuvenation....from the first game to the 3rd....release them every year....then release the sequel two years later until the story is completed. My apologies for the long post, but the death of the Golden Sun series was a huge tragedy for me, as it's my favorite RPG of all time

SF3 is one of my favourite games of all time and few people know of it. But it's nice to point to GS, another great series, and people do know it. For me GS was the spirtual successor of SF. It's a shame they never made a tactic version of it.
It's a shame the games lost traction after DD. Because DD was what I grew up playing as my first Golden Sun game. But as the comments mentioned, I agree. They took way too long to release the third version. Maybe if they had another 3d early console release it would've been different.

All Nintendo care about these days is Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, Smash Bors and Fire Emblem, they don't give a damn about Golden Sun.
Speaking of which, another series Nintendo's involvement has killed off is Baten Kaitos (due to them wanting Monolith to make Xenoblade Chronicles games), I'm guessing that you'll be doing a video on that series too.

Tell that to the Takahashi brothers. They went ahead and created the game after getting drunk. It was as if they had no intentions of creating a third game because they thought the first two was complete.
Also, it still has a chance. If kid icarus and punch out had 20+ years before it had a sequel, games that fans considered as dead, then Golden Sun still has thay chance. The problem with the 3rd game was the numerous points of no return and the disjointed mess of the story and messing with the established lore other than that, it still is a Golden Sun game albeit not as great.
Think of it like this, if octopath traveller can have this much level of success, then a game like Golden Sun certainly has one too.
Camelot is not like Monolith Soft, it is a smaller company with an equally smaller staff. But they could coordinate with Monolith Soft. Nintendo has been known to have multiple studios working and giving consultations on a single game (BOTW, smash).
I've been a fan of Nintendo for 20+ years. And believe me, they still surprise me from time to time.
Terry 309 Nintendo has lots of things to worry about then a fail rpg series. Blame the developers for not making a good game. Blame them for piggybacking off of mario characters for greed. Nintendo don't need these sports games nor or they forcing anyone to make them. If that case monolith would be making mario spinoff too.

Oh man I hope the series gets remade or remastered to gain Attraction again. This was the best game series i ever played.
They should make a remastered version of the original duology trying to recover the original pre-rendered assets in a higher resolution (basically, those "rounded" CGI models they must have originally made in a more powerful computer before they digitised and compressed them into more pixelated sprites) and make high Res sprites from those, put the two games together so we could if we wanted, visit the inaccessible areas from GS1 in GS2. If they see that gets people's attention, then make GS4.
Even with Nintendo Switch, they made more Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros.... why not Golden Sun...

Rpg genre as a whole has been dying for a decade.Its sad but companies and the investors just produce simple first person shooter games,((not that the fps genre is bad,its just SUPER simple and CHEAPER to do compared to the undertaking of an rpg)) and the attention lacking newer generations has led to it.Many people just don't care about character development or stories or intricate customization systems in games anymore.They just want to fire the game and just pew pew.Rpg genre is kind of an intellectual genre so it just dosent sell as much anymore cause of the new demographics,so the markets just respond and you see the new shallower gaming experiences you see now.

Japanese game development is coming back full time after a decade of suffocating. Just these past few months have seen a lot of games coming out. Making niche games with ambitions such as the ones jrpg games have is not easy, and I mean profitability.

I would even be happy to see a Golden Sun & GS:TLA remake, with the graphics and gameplay tweaks from GS:DD, maybe new puzzles and dungeon maps (like a Golden Sun "master quest"). Would probably be on the Switch, so they could release it as one big game as originally intended.

Nintendo really shot itself in the foot and I don't understand the criticism of dark dawn. They really nick picky to me.
The only thing I can agree with is that the the game was way too easy. The battles had so much to offer but I barely could use any of the mechanics cuz almost every enemy died with about 1 or 2 basic attacks.

Dark Dawn was dissapointing in deed, not awful but, compared to the first 2 ones, it was everything the fans said, easy, bland and maybe the rush on making your team of full 8 characters in a short time contributed to make some of them really weak, like Himi or even Eoleo in some extent (Nowell was annoying but at least she was shown just for a short time so no way to develope her character)
Actually GS1-3 was their prologue, not GS3 being the resolve of that.

It surprises me that in every video of Golden Sun no one talks about the petitions (yes, the ones like change.org). I know they often don’t work, BUT I truly KNOW that the fans CAN make the difference. From another game, the Zero Escape series, the games are LOVED in America but not in Japan, so the third game was on hiatus for years. Meanwhile, the fans created a group the “Blue Bird Operation” and guess what, they truly made the creator of the games to want to release it, and we had the third game of the Zero Escape series.
I remember back in 2010 signing a petition for the Golden Sun like “oh, yeah, it will be achieved in no time”. Even there are a few for the Golden Sun, NONE HAS REACHED ITS GOAL.
It’s very sad srsly, what’s even worse, we can see how little fans care about GS or that we are a very few fans... It’s not like signing those petitions will bring us a new game, but at least it tells me that we aren’t even 13k fans... It breaks my heart for the creators that they NEVER got their “if there are enough fans”
Camelot has a close relationship with Nintendo, but they're not exclusively their dev company....Camelot has also been responsible for Sony's Hot Shots Golf franchise.
also if they couldn't guarantee a sequel they should have ended on an actual ENDING rather than a goddamn cliffhanger....the cliffhanger ending to Dark Dawn is one of the biggest reasons fans are dying for a new entry ( with the series just being great RPGs being the biggest overall...alongside the incredible soundtrack and lovable characters )

I really hope Isaac gets into Smash Ultimate. It's probably the only chance we'll have if we want to get another game soon.
I guess we can say smash ultimate is our only hope to revive this series, but even then I dont even know if we'd get what we've been waiting for. Most of is current fanbase is the dedicated that've been there since the 1st game. We've been waiting so long our expectations are high, that we'd be happier without a sequel than another Dark dawn.

One theory that i always had in mind was this. I think after the lost age,many key members of camelot decided to leave because they were sick and tired of nintendo bossing them around to make more fucking mario sports games and that's why dark dawn felt so average. You can say they got burnt out by the rpg genre,i don't think that's the case though,camelot had created many great rpgs beforehand,like shining force 3 which is regarded as the best in the series,so this team definitely had a talent for rpgs. Now imagine how demoralizing it must have felt for some people to be making mario sports games instead of rpgs that they wanted,so they said ''screw you mario'' and left. That's just a personal assumption of course.
Golden sun,definitely on my most beloved rpgs of all time.The points that made it so amazing to me were,first of all,using your magic outside battles to solve puzzles and interacting with the enviroment in general,i wish more games had that. Cities felt like small dungeons,every city had a secret/basement/cave that could be explored,with a treasure at the end of it. That made cities feel interesting instead of places where you just buy gear from. Third,the fact that NPCs had a lot of lines. You can mind read them,which almost doubled their lines,but wait there's more! NPCs also reacted to events around them,which meant that they had even more lines of dialogue!This really made the npcs seem like real people instead of just useless sprites.
I have only played the DS one, I need to go back and play the other two I guess if they are better. My biggest problem with the DS one is that it was far to easy, but its more than that it was wasted potential. It had all kinds of cool spells,skills, and If I remember correctly even combined attacks but you never had to use any of it. If you did even bosses would almost die instantly, it was such a waste of a battle system they obviously put a lot of thought into. Other then that the game was fun though yeah the story might not of been perfect but it had fun dungeons,cool puzzles and a interesting world. I would still recommend the 3rd one just go in knowing that it is far to easy.
Martino Magic the DS game did really poorly. The gba games were harder combat wise, and the puzzles are longer and harder as well. It puts DD puzzles to shame, since they are almost nonexistent in DD. I would definitely recommend the gba games even if you have to emulate.
I will for sure check them out because I did really like everything but the easy aspect of the DS one. I am a huge puzzle RPG fan since one of my first and favorite games of all time was Lufia 2. As always the biggest problem is just finding the time to get to them haha.
It's possible Isaac can make it into Smash Ultimate. If he does, that could very well mean a series revival.

I would like to see the entire Golden sun franchise get a proper remaster for current gen. Story is brilliant. but battle wise, GS1 entire new specs for Isaac's party. buff the party up so they play like Felix's party does in GS Lost age. Isaac's party is rediculously weak no matter how high a level he is. Dark Dawn's combat can also be tweaked. make leveling up take longer and the battles more difficult.

I will tell you what happened: stupid ”fans” destroyed any good ratings of the 3rd game by just b*tching about the ”bad” instead of ever mentioning more positives.
Their reasoning? Criticizing a product is a need to improve the next.
The end result? Nintendo gave no sh*ts about producing a 4th title. Meanwhile, WE the true fans can let go of some bad about the 3rd game, and as one who finished all games, I loved them all. Anyone who hated DD was a stupid liar, cause the game was GOOD, regardless of some bad points about it.
I couldn't agree with you more. Sometimes the Internet itself is the reason why many franchises fail because some games fail to meet the majorities' expectations. It's kinda lame but that's how marketing and capitalism unfortunately work.

The reason why GSDD ended that way was Nintendo pulled back most money that they offered to the Takahashi brothers/their GS project, and afaik firced them to release the game to release sooner! I mean the game gets rushed towards the end, and you cansee/feel it. I see GS3 as a mix of GS1 & 2 with little advancing that point. Oh and Stella/Sveta felt like the 2ndary main protagonist later on with her importance of the story.
Perhaps if Nintendo made Golden Sun 1&2 available on the eshop and developed a *proper* sequel to those stories, then perhaps the franchise would catch on with more people.

When they finally get a chance to play it, they love it. I didn't even know the series existed until around 2013 when I played it on emulator by random chance. By this point you couldn't get copies of the games anywhere.
I'm not a fan of dark dawn. I don't want to pick up the story 30 years later after such a massive cliff hanger.
