Even to this day, I think Lufia 2 honestly stands up with games like Chrono Trigger as one of the greatest RPGs of all time.
The story, soundtrack, gameplay, and that element of charm make it an amazing game.

Agreed. I consider it to be among those ranks. The dungeon puzzles were outstanding, the encounter system was very well done, and the Ancient Cave was a really interesting wrinkle in gameplay. It's a shame all the people involved in keeping the franchise going seemed to want to make anything but Lufia III, or competent ports of Lufia I and/or II elsewhere. They'd have my money in a heartbeat.

The first Lufia was the first RPG I ever played; my older cousin gave it to me when I was like 5 or 6, and having predominantly played platformers like Mario and Sonic, I couldn’t understand how to play it at all. Came back a few years later after having played and beaten Super Mario RPG and Lufia became of my favorite games “no one had ever heard of.” Then in college I learned there was a sequel, and it still stands as my favorite SNES RPG. It made me realize that there are many games and franchises beloved by a relatively small group of players that will unfortunately never get the chance to be as recognizable as others.

    • @zhizn_snake

Wow, that's almost exactly how it was for me too, amazing! I also started with Lufia when I was around 7, I rented it a few times and loved it but I sucked at it. Then I played Lufia 2, I think. But Super Mario RPG taught me how to play RPGs well, so I came back to Lufia and Lufia 2 after buying them and finally finished them.

While Lufia 3 was a graphical downgrade from the previous titles, that's due to the limitations of the GameBoy Color system. In fact, I'd say Lufia 3 is the most visually beautiful GBC title I've ever seen, by a vast margin.

    • @Cuprite1024

Agreed. I haven't played any of these games yet, but I love the way TLR looks (Granted, I just like the typical GBC style in general). I own 3 on the 3DS VC, so I'll get around to it eventually. :)

It also actually had the best musical compositions in the series, it just gets overlooked because the sound doesn't sound as good the SNES sound card's. The battle system was also unique and pretty awesome once you got used to it... pretty cool how you can have 9 characters in a battle at once.

I think another place they went wrong was releasing Lufia Curse of the Sinistrals in America instead of Europe. Lufia's influence was always most felt east of the Atlantic. Bit of trivia: Lufia was the only SNES RPG translated into Dutch.
Ironically enough, Neverland's core audience was in the Netherlands.

I feel sad. I beat Lufia and Lufia 2 and really enjoyed those games. Lufia 2 is still alive today as the speedrunning community is still running Ancient Cave tournaments of that game. The Ancient Cave in Lufia 2 was the very first rogue-like game to become popular and it was what made rogue-like games become super-popular.

First off Sir Landon, I bow to you very humbly for the effort you have put into researching this video. My how the curtain of time has been pulled back and the memories come rushing in.
To this very day, I have never, never, NEVER...been so affected by a game, rpg or other..as Lufia 2. By the time I'd finished it, I'd lost a chunk of my soul it seems I'll never get back. The events that transpired in there, I feel, have pretty much eclipsed everything else Ive seen in rpgs since then. The music of the game. Spending 12 hours...on ONE puzzle. The horrors of descending 99 floors of the still unmatched, unsavable Ancient Cave. The concluding events..on Doom Island. Even though these things happened 25ish years ago, I still remember them all quite vividly..and there has been nothing like them since. While I respect all subsequent remakes, I feel painfully mindful of that phrase "You can never go back home." The past is forever lost. At least now, after seeing this vid, I can kinda close the door on this series..as well as my wish for final revenge upon Arek, that divine sonavabitch whose ponderings upon who was really transcient cost the world of Lufia so very much.
    Heres to days gone by.

I played Lufia: Ruins of Lore when I was younger and I really liked how you were able to capture any of the monsters you encountered and have them fight and train alongside you. The biggest kicker for me though was that doing so allowed you to "morph" or "combine" with them to form a bad arse looking monster that would obliterate the enemy. xD

Honestly, Curse of the Sinistrals was a shock to me as a Lufia fan. I was worried as soon as I learned that Square-Enix had bought Taito and along with them, gained the Lufia IP. Without knowing much, I would have thought Square-Enix were the ones that decided on all the changes that made the game feel less like a Lufia game, but turns out that most of the original Neverland devs that worked on the original Lufia 2 (as a well as Fortress of Doom and Legend Returns), especially director Masahide Miyata and composer Yasunori Shiono, returned to work on the remake. I'm surprised Miyata decided to change so much compared to the first game. The new character designs were by someone from Square-Enix tho, and I really wasn't so into the results.
I mean, maybe it's a fine game on its own, but it just didn't feel like a Lufia game to me. Neither the characters nor the world made me feel like I was playing Lufia. I actually never asked for a Lufia 2 remake, if anything I'd prefer a remaster or the same game with upgrades visuals and arranged music, keeping generally the same story and character designs. I actually prefer Action RPGs and I love the Ys series, but playing as a team was one of my favorite things about the Lufia series.
It's too bad Neverland is really dead now :( I wish they could try again and make a new sequel. I really want a Lufia remastered collection, at least. Lufia has been my favorite game series since my childhood.
Even though Lufia and Lufia 2 are my favorites in the series, I really liked Lufia The Legend Returns too (I didn't like it at first, but I stuck with it and I ended up loving it). I'm glad we saw what the original Neverland team wanted to do with the series rather than whatever Nihon Flex wanted to do on the PS1, it's just too bad they didn't get a better budget and didn't get to work on a stronger platform. I also really liked Cima on GBA, another great Neverland game that flopped that I wish we could see more of but never will.

As a 33 yr old who obsessively collects and plays thousands of games, Lufia TLR remains my favorite game of all time to this day. I first played it about a year after its release when I was 11 years old. The randomized dungeons, especially in the ancient cave, make for infinitely rewarding replayability and relaxation. The story’s ending never fails to bring me to sobbing tears, and each and every character feels like a longtime friend with amazing personality and important life lessons to share.

  • @thelightsoldier1782
    @thelightsoldier1782 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I can't consider Lufia TLR as an spin-off because it continue with the main story (also the intro scene tell us that).
The game sadly was too limited in the GBC, it has a powerful potential that the companies didn't take advantage, for example: the nine characters battle, the spiritual wave system, hero's interactions with map, characters story, among others.
The main story is well, it has comedy scenes (Hero and Seena discussions lol)
Maybe the most negative point in Lufia TLR are the random dungeons. Basically, every dungeon is the same: get lost, fight enemies, find treasures, and the stairs. Something that Lufia II did very well was the dungeon's puzzles, and Lufia TLR leaved that behind.
However, I guess everyone agree that Lufia TLR has awesome soundtracks, the developers really did very well them.

Lufia 3 isn't as bad as most people say it is. Sure the graphics are different but I like the battle system and the wave mechanic. But seriously... letting the series fade into obscurity is dumb and I feel that someone should get the rights to the Lufia series and make a forth game with the Sinistrals and Erek with the return of Iris. I think the 3rd game should get the Trials of Mana treatment.

The problem they had started in concept. It was a game far before it's time, and in both games they basically drafted the script as if it were an anime series. The original in 1993 was released on a platform that just didn't do the story and gameplay justice, while the sequel was released too late on the same platform, where it was easily forgotten with the release of the N64.
To this very day, I believe the story of the 2 games would be more successful as a multi season anime.

Ah Lufia 2, what a Gem. My Cousin gave me a cracked Dreamcast, where this game was on it. Imagine a little Boy getting hyped, because the MC had the same Name.
Then the Story.......my little heart experienced everything. Joy,sadness, rage and even a crush on Selen and Tia. What an Experience.

Lufia 2 is one of the best RPGs I've ever played. It's sad to see all of those bad decisions pilling up and condemning this great franchise... But, who knows, maybe in the future someone takes this franchise and brings it to its former glory. Well, at least I hope so, hahaha

Lufia 1 was the first RPG I liked back in 94 or 95 (I was around 7 or 8). I remember trying an FF but it didnt click with me. I played Lufia 2 at launch and it became my FGoAT for years, only really competing with Lufia 1. 2 may have been more polished and had better gameplay but Lufia 1 had a certain style, direction, and moments that 2 didnt. That intro that lasts right up until Alekia, that started it all, is my favorite moment in all my gaming. Oh and I loved Lufia The Legend Returns (Lufia 3!) too. Iwouldnt say it looked and played different, it felt like a Lufia on GB (so obviously visuals would take a hit) that somehow tried some ambitious new things. Best GB game ever, although I was disappointed with it at first. Took some getting used to. Story felt more lighthearted too. Oh, and Cima was awesome! I want a sequel. Ruins of Lore was a bit interesting but ultimately mostly forgettable. S-E killed Lufia and killed Neverland, imo. The gameplay in the remake was ok for me but it was no longer Lufia. Part of the problem was that even with Lufia 2 having some success it still paled next to the success of other RPGs. Lufia was always niche and Lufia 2 is a cult classic.
Lufia also made me a fan of Ys, which is thought to have inspired some things in Lufia.

Blows my mind how much it looks like FF4/5 ... especially with that mode 7 airship. If it wasn't for the battle system, I'd think it was a sequel to Final Fantasy USA/Mystic Quest. Wild stuff.

Lufia 1 and 2 were all-time classics, and I have a deep fondness for The Legend Returns as well. I think that one gets a lot of unjustified flack and it holds up as a worthy successor.
Ruins of Lore is when it really began to hit the fan. I only recently played it and it was an absolute trainwreck. Instead of doing its own thing like Legend Returns, it decided to take everything Lufia 2 did and make it much, much, MUCH worse. For me, the final straw was the Captule... err... "Disc" monsters. Not only were they pathetically weak, but they also were some of the most ridiculously cowardly things ever, running away on the first or second turn even when you start boosting their loyalty (which also took forever). Characters were lame, leveling up felt like it did basically nothing, and it was just a tedious mess from the start all the way to when I finally gave up on it.

Mainly it is the same thing that happened to the Final Fantasy VII Remake. The turn based battles became real time battles.Old school fans don't like there classic games combat system being changed that drastically and it led to alot of disappointment for older fans that grew up with these games.I do miss this series though. RIP Lufia.

I actually generally prefer Action RPGs, but being a Lufia II SNES fan made me not like the remake. What we played on SNES already established what the world of Lufia was to us, and the remake changed all that to something else. It changed the style and personality of characters, the world felt different, and it removed the feeling of adventuring and fighting together with friends. There was just too many changes. It was maybe fine as it's own game, but comparing it to the original game is what makes it look not as good.
As a traditional RPG, Lufia 2 has gameplay ideas that set it apart from other RPGs of the time, like being able to use items and weapons outside of battles, for adventuring and doing puzzles like you would be able to do in a game like Zelda, as well as be able to stun monsters so that you can avoid battles or get the advantage on them, or even use monsters to do puzzles! A good remake or sequel could expand on those ideas, instead they left all of it behind.

Let's say Doom Island did come back 150 years after the events of Lufia 1. Then Amon, Erim, Daos and Gades were about to walk in to their main fortress and make themselves a home once more. But out of nowhere, a new group of Sinistrals known as the Universal 4 would come out and take over Doom Island completely! As they did, they turned Amon, Erim, Daos and Gades into children and banished them back to the overworld with no magic. The Universal 4 would go on to rule the world for 20 more years. Then the story would begin with Amon being raised by his father working as a farmer and his mother specializing in knitting.
Amon would later discover that both of his parents being murdered by Gonun (Sinistral of Tragedy) and his home completely demolished by Rent (Sinistral of Disaster). The two new Sinistrals would reveal themselves as part of the Universal 4! Next, they would play around with Amon until it was time for the both of them to take out Amon for good. At least until Erim intervened and drove Gonun and Rent away.
Amon and Erim would go on to start a new adventure by locating their allies Gades and Daos and regaining their ability to use more powerful evil magic! Then the Sinistrals would be out for revenge to shut down Gonun and Rent along with Elma (Mistress of Anarchy) and Zim (Sinistral of Mayhem/Leader) in their desperate attempt to eliminate the Universal 4, known as the world's greatest threat! This would be my way of saying "Revenge of the Sinistrals: Lufia 5"
This would also feature Maxim's Dual Blade sword merging with Gades' Sword of Destruction to form the highly anticipated "Quad Blade" which is the Universal 4's biggest fear!

So, basically: Sqeeenix saw nostalgia and decided that the heart-break that was Iris being the Sinistral of Chaos and Maxim and Selan dying for the world so their son could live was not a good enough plot to keep... As such, everyone hated it, among other reasons (the world building was lazy and the game was about 1 hour in length and completely ruined the personality of established characters) and hence it sold like sheit

    • @JaidynReiman
      @JaidynReiman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Iris was the Sinistral of Death, not Chaos.
Also, they did keep the original plot. It was only on New Game+ where they allowed Maxim and Selan to live.
Lastly, Erim had always been depicted as warming up to Maxim under her Iris guise. She saves Maxim at the Ancient Tower which she was absolutely not supposed to do. She even helps Maxim save Parcelyte, fully admitting that this is not something she should be doing.
I dislike ruining the personalities of characters and ruining character designs, but Iris's portrayal is not something I had much of a problem with. I also think that the game wasn't that bad, but it was piss poor compared to Lufia II. It probably would have been much more viable if they had remade Lufia 1 instead.

    • @Mzaleyao
      @Mzaleyao 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@JaidynReiman I'm not making myself clear in regards to the plot. It's not the plot points themselves that bothers me, it's the executions. And I totes forgot it was death, not chaos, sorry. I should perhaps just stay quiet and express myself better before commenting next time =) A lot does not click with me in Curse of the Sinistrals and it makes me word-vomit in lack of a better way to say I couldn't stand it...

I feel like the Lufia 2 remake could have been good, if the remake came out at a later time. Like if it came out during the PS5 era. I think the Lufia 2 remake could only be good, if it went the route of either Final Fantasy VII: Remake as a mega high budget, or they went the route of Live A Live with the 2D/3D stuff.

I actually loved curse of the sinistrals, & this is even after being a die hard fan of rise of the sinistrals.
Honestly, bias against remakes is actually ruining a lot of good games, & for what? Because the original was better? Because maxim should've been named jason, todd, or some other name....any other name than maxim?
    Picky much?
Seriously, just play this game at least once, & I think many will notice that it's a pretty damn good game
