I originally played Shining Force 1 and 2 when I was 23. I still play them today on my PS4 on the Sega Classics collection and never get tired of them and I'm 47 now. It's a shame the series has lost its identity over the years and continues to get worse. These new developers seem to have no idea how to cater to the fans of the originals.
I was a little kid in China. The only available version by the time was Japanese. Me and my friend doesn't read any Japanese yet we played the Shining force1 whole summer, you can tell how good the game is at this point. That's some best memory of our life... I'm playing Shining force 2 on my switch for MD classics now. First time really get to know what the story is about.
@@TheDeathOfLucifer I doubt Shining Force IV will ever be made, the SJRPG it was known best for ended at III and even then it didn't have all that good of a release overseas.
i hate how when we jumped into PS2 and Shining Soul the devs dropped the artstyle from the original to "generic shounen anime boys". The first 2 shining force art had something that reminded me to things like Peter Pan, had this "Fairy tale childness" that i really loved.
@@JacaboBlanco It runs perfectly on Mednafen and is more than playable on SSF. I recommend Mednafen because it has better sound, has a more modern interface, and is more geared to English-speaking users than to Japanese.
I see that many people miss the old Shining Force titles as much as I do. SF 2 was the favorite game of my childhood. That being said, most tactical RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics didn't really appeal to me because they don't have the world exploration that SF does. So I decided to share with you a list of games, which I think SF fans might enjoy, though not all of them are tactical RPGs. - King's Bounty series. This is a game from Russian developers, but it combines big world exploration and tactical battles. Also the game has a very nice atmosphere like in fairy tales, which resembles SF too. The soundtrack is also great. The best entries in the series are The Legend, Crossworlds, and Dark Side. - Fire Emblem series. This series is the first one that comes to mind when we talk about where the developers of SF drew inspiration for combat mechanics from. While it doesn't have a large world to explore, the latest entries (Echoes, Three Houses, Engage) have small locations that you can explore, interact with NPCs, and even do quests. - Dragon Quest series. If Fire Emblem can be called the “father” of SF, then the DQ series is its “mother”. One of the key SF developers worked on DQ games earlier in the 80's, so the influence is very clear. It's a traditional JRPG (without tactics), but the moment you run it, you immediately get a sense of the same atmosphere as in Shining Force 1-2. Story, characters, dialogues, music - everything here is reminiscent of SF! For those who are not familiar with the series, I would recommend starting with the last entry - DQ 11. On the one hand, it has beautiful modern graphics, but on the other hand, it stays true to its roots. - Golden Sun & GS The Lost Age. This is a series of also traditional JRPGs without tactics, but developed by Camelot - i.e. the same company that previously developed SF. And the developers themselves positioned it as a «spiritual successor of SF». Also, many reviewers included GS games in the list of the best RPGs of all time (see, for example, IGN top 100 RPGs list). - Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky FC & SC. It's also a traditional JRPG, but you can move your characters around the field, so tactics are important here, especially in the later parts of the game. The most important thing is the atmosphere and the story, fans of retro JRPGs should be very pleased! I also enjoyed «Trails from Zero» and «Trails to Azure», but they have a more modern setting, hence they have less in common with SF. As for «Trails of Cold Steel» saga, I found it very long, tedious and self-repeating, so I wouldn't recommend starting with it. - Mario + Rabbids series. Despite the rather childish style, the tactical gameplay in the game is quite deep, reminiscent of XCOM, and exploring the world is interesting as there are many secrets hidden in it. And lastly here are a few more tactical RPGs that feature world exploration: - Guid Saga Vanished Worlds. An upcoming indie game that combines world exploration and tactical battles similar to Divinity Original Sin with the visual style of a JRPG. Looks very promising. - Wandering Sword. Chinese tactical JRPG about martial arts in HD-2D style similar to Octopath Traveler. Has a large world to explore. - Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk. Tactical RPG from a French indie studio in which your squad of 8 characters explores dungeons. The game has a cartoony style and a lot of humor, and in this regard it is also somewhat similar to SF. - Arc the Lad 2. A Japanese tactical JRPG from the PS1 era. Also combines tactics with world exploration.
Shining Force 3 is my favorite game of all time. It's a tragedy that that was (essentially) the end of the series. Thank God for fan translations, which allow us to play all 3 Scenarios in English. I think the only possible way the series could be revived, is if Sega and Camelot ever kiss and make up, which will probably never happen. I don't really have any hope of Sega so much as trying to make a game that is truly in the style of a Shining Force game. And, frankly, that boggles my mind. With the success of Fire Emblem, why the hell isn't ANYONE trying to get into that market? Shining Force even seems like the most obvious contender.
It's ironic that the Shining series as a whole has barley sold anything and Sega keeps making them. Yet Space Channel 5,Samba De Amigo,Panzer Dragoon,Virtua Fighter and Jet Set Raido are dead.
Michael Lewis I love Panzer Dragoon, it was one of the first games I got for my Saturn and I still play Panzer Dragoon Orta and beat it about once a year.
Shining Force is one of my top 5 RPG series. It's sad to see what has become of it. And like you said, it's one of those series that was never truly appreciated outside Japan, which explains why most of the games never saw the light of the day outside Japan. But then, Sega was very well known for making bad business decisions, which why their consoles flopped in the first place. But we're not here to judge. Great video as always, Eric!
@@mrfreeman2911 I can list off a few for you, but I agree with your sentiment; that genre needs a lot more love in the indie scene, especially since indie devs have recently revived both 2D Sonic games and the Streets of Rage franchise. I'd look into Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark for sure. I found it on accident a few months ago and put in over 50 hours in a few days during the two weeks off I got for Christmas from my job. A few others I've encountered are the Banner Saga and Fae Tactics. Banner Saga was an indie darling that really set itself a part with an art style that evoked both the Norse mythology it based itself on and 80s fantasy animation (think like Rankin & Bass's notorious Lord of the Rings and Hobbit animated films). I have both but have only played the first one. I wasn't overly impressed as it just felt kinda clunky to me but maybe you'll enjoy it more. Still haven't gotten around to the second one, mostly because I hate completing games out of order, by and large. I don't know much about Fae Tactics just yet. I have another game from the dev called Valdis Story. It's a sidescrolling action game with heavy metroidvania elements and a light RPG infrastructure, but the story and aesthetic remind me of a much more brightly colored, anime inspired Hollow Knight. I really love the game, and Fae Tactics looks really good. It's on sale now on GOG so I'll probably pick it up, but at this point I can only hope it's as good as it looks.
Same. Played it in the 2nd Sega Smash Pack on PC. Finished it over and over again. Then i tracked down the Smash Pack on Dreamcast, the original Genesis version, and the gba remake. Fun fact about the 2nd Smash Pack, not only was it PC exclusive, but the emulation was better in both Smash Packs for PC and the music isn't messed up like in the Dreamcast version.
@@rainehappy7097 i think the only hope we have is the shining force translation project witch is coming alone nicely all disc are now playable but they may have not bean beta tested. you do need to have the original discs to apply the patch.
WHAT?! I am an SF fan and I thought SF2 was a strict improvement. It was the first game, but with a longer story, more characters, more spells, a more expansive world you can freely explore complete with an inter-dimensional portal gateway to go between continents (no Elder Scrolls or open world, but still superior to SF1) and better art and production values. Those were mostly superficial things, but it is an example of what an indirect sequel should be. The storytellers in one of the later towns in SF2 tie Darksol, Dark Dragon and Zeon together so even though it is 95% indirect, there is that Easter Egg along with a poorly translated Chaos Breaker.
I agree. It was one of my favorite games as a little kid and I thought it was much better than Shining Force 1. Also...I HAAAAAATED Shining in the Darkness 🥴
@@ErickLandonRPG It is awesome! And I agree with Jay. SF2 has a more Bilbo the Hobbit feel, focused on adventure and mystery. Meanwhile SF1 has that Lord of the Ring pressure. From the start of SF1, you know that it is a ride for tragedy.
It indeed was an improvement, but only gamemechanicwise. It played better than SF1, which always (and still) feels a bit slow and stiff. But story- and characterwise SF1 was much better. The charas are more orginal and the story is more epic. While SF1 is the tale about saving the world from ancient evil, SF2 is a Disney ride about saving a princess and defeating a meaningless baddie. Or as stated above, SF1 is LOTR and SF2 is Hobbit. The REAL improvement is SF3. Maybe the Charas lack a bit of Yoshitaka Tamakis character design ingeniousness (look at Feda), but game mechanics, music, battle system and most notably the story is superb!
@@SirYodaJedi We need a proper collection that has every chapter. Shining In The Darkness Shining Force Shining Force CD Shining Force Gaiden trilogy and Shining Force 2.
Shining Force was the first rpg I ever played back in '93 and I have been hooked ever since. Shining Force I, II, CD and III are still the greatest games. I even played the Japanese versions on SFIII scenarios II and III. I recently bought a repro of SFIII scenarios I II and III so I can play them in English. Disclaimer-I own original copies of the games
Was feeling nostalgic about Shining Force and wondered what happened. Found your video very enlightening. Thank you! You are truly a gem for covering this, along with other classic titles.
Shining Force was such an incredible game and so is shining force 2,which I by the way just started playing for the first time last week,so even as an old game it still holds up incredibly well. I don't understand why they went from awesome tactical RPGs into...well whatever the fuck Shining Resonance is supposed to be.
I had no idea Camelot got their start doing Shining Force, that the Force is just a branch of a series. Famicom Wars and Front Mission never came out of Japan in the 8 and 16 bit era - tactical RPGs at the time were rare.
Sigh... yet another series where it's painfully obvious to every fan what needs to be done to revive it, but the corporate giants are so out-of-touch with the fans that they keep doing the wrong thing over and over until they kill the franchise for good.
@person merc Honestly, there were plenty of other games to roll with on Sega, just not beyond Genesis. SF, langrisser, Phantasy Star, Altered Beast, and Golden Ax and Alex Kid were some of the best in my opinion.
My favorite Sega Console is the Saturn and I lobe their wide variety of games like the Saturn Shining trilogy, Panzer Dragoon Sagas, Dragon Force, Guardian heroes, Mysteria, Legend of Oasis and even Dark Savior Shame most of the other Saturn RPG titles are Japanese exclusives
I remember playing shining force 2 and got totally hooked. My battery didnt work, so i couldnt save and played all saturday, left the console working over night and at 6am i was playing it for all day again, but my mom told me to turn it off as the next day was monday and i had to go to school 😀 i think that was the most crazy gaming obsession moment ever
Yes, but before shinning force there was shinning in the darkness. Same developers, and same universe, different play style, awesome game though. Edited, now that i watched your video i see you mentioned shinning in the darkness! xD Great job!!! Landstalker was beasty too,
Thanks for this video I've been a huge fan of the original and always wanted to learn about what happened to the series but I had NO idea there was that many games!
I played Shining the Holy Arc the year it came out and I thought it was really fun. I still have my Saturn version of Shining Force 3 and it's worth about $200 on eBay. Don't even know why I bothered to post this, but that's my full experience with this series.
I loved it's huge dungeons and the play dynamic that let you have a pre-emptive attack if you juked the enemy from the direction it came before battle. Good times.
It's actually my favorite RPG of all time, and that is up against stiff competition such as EarthBound, Mother 3, the Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Demons' Souls, Deus Ex (the 2000 original), Skies of Arcadia, and Panzer Dragoon Saga.
=( Shining Force I and II are my favorites RPGs so far. From time to time i decide to play all over again these 2 titles. hahaha I actually have both on my Android "Shining Force Classics" on playstore. Amazing. Miss games like those.
Sega fucked up with Camelot Software Planning, and apparent'y aren't allowed to make Shining games in the SRPG form anymore. Now we have this generic ARPG bullshit with big tit waifus. I normally don't have a problem with waifus, unless you do what Shining Force did. Drop the idea of a varied and colorful cast for big tits and skimpy outfits. Shining Resonance is just a poor man's Tales game, anyway. Ridiculous.
Only thing I think you missed in the video was that there was another Shining Road phone game released around the same time as the Chronicle-Gaiden remakes, called Priestess of the Dark Dragon. Very decent summary, I hope that the series will come back as a full-fledged SRPG, but the originals are fun to replay regardless.
Erick my bro can you make the video on what the hell happen to front mission series, this is also one of the great mecha strategy RPG . Love from India.
Shining Resonance was enough to satisfy the anime fans who only watch for fan service, but not for the core fandom. Camelot is the only company that can bring it back unless M2 ports the older games or they hand it back to Atlus who's busy with Megami Tensei and Persona.
Loved Shining in the Darkness, and Shining Force, Shining Force II, Shining Force CD (Mega Drive).. I also loved the artwork/character designs.. The modern ones, look so.. Boring, generic.
Sega dumbed the series down after they split from Camelot. The art style now is by Tony Taka, a notorious hentai artist. They did this to attract lonely weebs without having to have a compelling story or gameplay. The most "shining" the new games get is dumb names with the word Shining in them.
Shining the Holy Ark is among my favorites in the series. I own everything but the souls and final conflict games. I have not beat all of them yet, I have completed only 9 to be exact.
Thank you for making this video. I recently passed Shining Resonance Refrain and really enjoyed it. After that I was curious about the other shining games in the series.
right now u can play shining force 1 and 2 on the switch with sega's ultimate collection but i would love to see this game remade for current switch or playstation
Shining Force was one of the first games I got for my Sega when I was ~12. I lent it to all my friends and we all played through it and loved it. We favoured the second, so I'm shocked to hear that it wasn't received well. It was a pure upgrade from SF1 - Graphics, combat, character variations, balance (I may remember this one wrong).
It frustrates me how different the rest of the series is from the original.. Instead of mimicking a successful game, they just kept building on the failure titles.. I just want an HD re-release of the original..
Alright, text wall incoming. My first exposure to this franchise was a copy of the original game owned by a super nice video game collector that used to babysit me when I was a kid back in the late 80s and through the mid 90s. He sparked my love of my collecting games and video game stuff. I was always in awe of him because, while my family had an NES, he had everything that was available at the time and that would be available through most of the 90s. Despite having a Genesis later on I'd not actually play Shining Force until I got the original one on a small collection of Sega games for PC in the late 90s or early '00s that also included games like Sonic 3 and a few others. My dad found it at like a Wal-Mart or K-Mart and brought it home for my two younger brothers and I. Our initial interest in the disc was Sonic 3 since we'd played the hell out of 1 and 2 on our Genesis, but one day we decided to try Shining Force and the 3 of us, my youngest brother and I in particular, just fell in love with it. It was a game that we played over and over and over again, cuz back in those days my family was quite poor and of course we didn't have things like Steam sales and trade in was just becoming a thing. I've now got SF II on the Genesis Collection on Steam and am actively playing through it, which is indirectly what lead me to this video. I was searching for something else related to the franchise and this was pretty high on the results list for my search. I have been loving the hell out of the game, though the dialogue and story are bit incoherent, thanks in particular to some noticeably bad localization. SF III seems to be a myth almost due to the incomplete NA release and how badly the Saturn shat itself, making the console and its games pretty damn difficult to find to begin with. I sincerely hope that Sega can be talked into making a special rerelease of a completed version of SF III, or hell they can even just full on remake it, but it needs to be more accessible. I didn't see hide nor hair of the series myself until I came across of a copy of SF EXA in my local Wal-Mart several years ago. I was thrilled the to see the SF name again but quickly became concerned as the art didn't resemble what I'd played to that point. I got home and looked up some reviews and gameplay videos online and ended up being pretty crestfallen when I saw the middling reviews combined with gameplay that reminded me entirely too much of Dynasty Warriors. I hadn't played a Diablo game at that time so I certainly wouldn't have made that connection, but I still would have been disappointed even then as I'd formed a love affair with SRPGs by that time thanks to the FFTA games.. At any rate, fast forward several years. I'm employed at GameStop and we get a copy of ProjectXZone in. I'm intrigued, especially because of the companies involved in the crossover and because it's at least partially a SRPG. I figured given that Sega was involved and what kind of game it was that Max might be a playable character. I was deeply disappointed when I found who was actually included from the SF series and wasn't even able to finish that game on account of how drawn out the battles became the further you got into it. I had very much wondered what happened to the series and, while I knew that Camelot had developed the Golden Sun games (also favorites of mine), I had no idea that they abandoned SF entirely to do it, or that the franchise struggled so much here in the States. As has been mentioned, the tactical style of RPG has regained a lot of steam thanks to Fire Emblem, so let's hope that Sega chooses revive this series by taking it back to its roots.
My intro to the series was the game gear SF: The Sword of Haija and I played the hell out of it. I inew from the magazines of the original SF but at the the time I only had a GG. Later I picked up the Sega CD SF and it was AWESOME! Still is. This is a series I need to revisit having played so few. I love the original style and considering FF tactics was/is popular I'm surprised this style wasn't returned to hard core.
All I remembered is that Shining series collaborated with famous artist and pulled some nice sales numbers (for its standard) in Japan, and never came back from that direction again. Okay gaming experience with beautiful, fully voice-overed characters were their way to go. Not sure what happened afterwards...
I nvr understood why when talking about the greatest SEGA RPGs most people jump straight to the Phantasy Star series when in my mind The Shining Force games on megadrive & the 3rd(I could only own part 1 due to no European release for part 2&3)on the SATURN are my favourite RPGs by a distance, especially for the EPIC battles
I have Shining Force on my Sega Genesis Collection for my Xbox 360. As well on my Switch with the Sega Genesis online which also has Shining Force II, which I'll play after I beat the first one. 😍
To make this series profitable and resurgent they should develop a remaster of the original 2 games and the 3rd and pair that with the release of Shining Force IV not long after. I think you can only expect people to come running back by officially naming it and releasing a fourth game in the main franchise and not add a bunch of silly terms and alternate names to make it seem like an offshoot. I would bet Shining Force IV sells.
My favorite game. I'm glad someone is covering it.I am doing a playthrough of the shining force remake if you are interested in joining me on the journey.
I played Shining Force all the way back when I was still in diapers (approximatley starting when I was about 3 really so just getting out of diapers really xD) and this series is one series I keep going back to all the time, it's my comfort game just like the first 5 gens of Pokemon, the OG Harvest Moons, and the Nintendo 64 Zelda games :)
I like shining force 1, 2 and shining in the darkness. One of the best games I've ever played, and I really like the art style they used back then. It was more western-like rather then anime style-like characteristics.
I liked Neo. Sega is mostly just pissing away talent and seemingly quality games by slapping the "Shining..." or "Shining Force" on games that aren't SRPGs. If those games weren't carrying the Shining label, they'd probably be more successful and be lauded. Instead, they just piss off people who want a real Shining Force game.
This makes me sad lol, remembering the days when i could just get lost in games, no work, no stress, no worries, just pure unadulterated unbridled blissful fuck going outside JOY lol
If there’s a non-Force shining title that links to the SF series, it’s Shining The Holy Ark which features the vandal Galm and the Thousand Year Kingdom mentioned also in Shining Force 3. Or do they all link to Vandals? Help...
It's not so much dropping the ball, as a general disregard for anything (except sonic) from their 16-bit heyday. The guys who developed it left SEGA long ago, everyone who was at SEGA in those days is now gone, it's just an IP to them now. No one there cares about it so they've sold development to the lowest bidder.
@@paintbokx It was more than just the 16 bit era though. It's the Saturn and Game Gear too. And I don't know if it counts, but they refered to it in Timestalkers too on Dreamcast. Yogurt is in it.
"Unfortunately it wasn't that well received/successful" - apparently every game in the series except like 2 of them. Thanks for doing this, it's up there with Dragon Slayer & Wonder Boy as one of the most confusing franchises out there.
This series would do great today, even a remake imo. Such a great series that probably will never be given another shot but who knows, I thought the same of Suikoden and it’s getting a remaster. Ever play Feda? Was never released in NA but was translated, at least the first game. Was really good and a SF clone.
I love shining force 2. I just wish they make a remake out of it. And return to that lovely turn base strategy game with unique combat scene and poromotion system. I just wonder is there any other games that works like shining force promotion system? And turn base strategy And with unique battle scene for every chrachter And secret pormotions or hiden chrachters in the game who could join the party ... Man i just want to play shf 2 agin
Shining force got me into Srpg next I found the disgaea which as of late is slowly dying but I’m here for it and I pray to get myself enough money to buy them...as in the company before they give up
I love Shining Force Neo and EXA. In fact they are the only Shining games so far that I've liked and beaten. I have yet to play some that picked my interest, such as the remake of the first SF for GBA or Shining Force 3. All the rest of the series I just didn't get into.
Erick I really enjoy your content!! got a portable retro console from the US and played games you recomended. Are you from Brazil? if you ever come to Argentina. let´s grab a beer!
I really liked Shining Force Feathers, but that may had been because although I did played alot of JRPG games even back than, that was the only Shining Force I had ever played. So I guess that's why, lol XD
I sold my sega system and everything over the years, but absolutely cannot let go of my boxed shining force 2. Love that game, except for the silly wood panel / tree puzzle.
Shining force 3 was a masterpiece even as one game. Now all three are easily playable in english through emulation. The brand died when camelot left. The music, story and battle design all hit a pincacle on sf3. Down hill since
My friends and I all played the hell out of the original Shining Force, and SF II when they were new. I was more of a Nintendo guy, but stuff like this was a massive reason to have a Genesis... which I luckily also had, along with the Sega CD. Most of my friends had a SNES, some had Genesis, but only I had the Sega CD... which means I was the only one enjoying stuff like Lunar. Always thought Shining Force CD was lame though. Not as a game... the game is alright, but it's more basic than the two Genesis games, being a remake of the Game Gear games. No towns or any exploration, just battle, battle battle... that's the main point of a SF game anyway so it's still okay, but it seems like a Sega CD game should do more than port a Game Gear game in such a basic format. I guess we got better music or something, and I think maybe the intro had voice acting? Wish we had a "real" Shining Force CD with some animated cutscenes and voice acting and stuff like that. I love the hell out of CD RPGs from that era... Ys on Turbo CD are all amazing.. Lunar, Vay, Snatcher, stuff like that hits all the nostalgia buttons for me. The thing I love the most is the voice acting. It's usually shitty, but I guess it's the right kind of shitty... again, nostalgia...
The only Shining Force game I played was EXA. I loved everything about it but was never able to beat the final boss. The difficulty spike was real. I just rage quit.
Me too! You can play pretty much all of them on Emulator these days, even the Saturn, DS and Sega CD ones.
they got a new one coming for phones soon
I was a little kid in China. The only available version by the time was Japanese. Me and my friend doesn't read any Japanese yet we played the Shining force1 whole summer, you can tell how good the game is at this point. That's some best memory of our life... I'm playing Shining force 2 on my switch for MD classics now. First time really get to know what the story is about.
You’d think with the recent explosion in popularity of Fire Emblem that Sega would resurrect Shining Force as an SRPG.
Why do that when they can make a forgettable anime crossover fighting game like Blade Arcus from Shining? I hate my life lol.
Sega isn't a rival of Nintendo anymore, might even piss them off to make a similar title
Camelot dude said he wants to make SF4 though
@@TheDeathOfLucifer I doubt Shining Force IV will ever be made, the SJRPG it was known best for ended at III and even then it didn't have all that good of a release overseas.

You don't have idea how many Langrisser Mobile players request a Shining Force 1 & 2 collab.
i hate how when we jumped into PS2 and Shining Soul the devs dropped the artstyle from the original to "generic shounen anime boys". The first 2 shining force art had something that reminded me to things like Peter Pan, had this "Fairy tale childness" that i really loved.
A-fucking-men!
I definitely agree.

And lastly here are a few more tactical RPGs that feature world exploration:
- Guid Saga Vanished Worlds.
Wargroove did't disapoint. Even tho the story is not comparable
Same here, I don't get why with the success of FE, nobody's milking any other SRPG series.
Shining Force III is also my favorite game of all time. Greatest game ever made IMO.
@@CRedd9830 Really wish they would have made a Shining Force 4, featuring Galm.
@@guruthosamarthruin4459 That would be epic!! Shining Force 4 and Panzer Dragoon Saga 2 are the two sequels I need.
I'm currently playing Shining Force 3, the three translated scenarios. I'm almost done with Sc. 2. Such a masterpiece.
Panzer Dragoon is the greatest series IMO.
Chase Redd You have good taste.
puyokiba I downloaded the demo on my Switch, I’ll check it out.
Yeah, Panzer and Jet Set Radio should have kept going.
Thank you, glad you liked it.
Okay, THIS is actually a series I haven’t ever stopped being salty about. It’s so easy to develop! Come on!! Give us more!!
I am surprised at the lack of indie games based on this.
If I could programme I'd have done it years ago.
Because anime is all fan service now. And not the good kind.
@@rainehappy7097 Too true...
Yeah, they basically just have to write good story, that's all.
this one hurts...shining force 1 was the first strategy game i ever played =/
Same. Played it in the 2nd Sega Smash Pack on PC. Finished it over and over again. Then i tracked down the Smash Pack on Dreamcast, the original Genesis version, and the gba remake. Fun fact about the 2nd Smash Pack, not only was it PC exclusive, but the emulation was better in both Smash Packs for PC and the music isn't messed up like in the Dreamcast version.
shining force 3 needs a remake more than anything right now!
Remake Shining Force III including all scenarios and bonus content as well as Shining The Holy Ark and make a Shining Force IV!

I agree with you, man, but back then the game received mixed reviews. Fuck them, I say, SF2 is great.
I've only played two Shining games. Shining Force 2 is great and Shining Force III is my favorite game of all time. The greatest game I've ever played

YES. SFIII was the last good one.
I mean, i only knew about shining force 1 2 and 3 until i saw this video
Except maybe Shining Wind. I could care less about the rest, but I really wanted to play that one.
Damn, I love the first 2 Shining Force games, in fact I would take those games over any Fire Emblem, Disgaea, or FF Tactics games.

Gotta be honest I loved Shining Tears, NEO and EXA. These are my favorite entries in the series.
Same here bruder!!!
RIP best game of my life
The Shining Force series will live forever with me :( 1,2...
Sigh... yet another series where it's painfully obvious to every fan what needs to be done to revive it, but the corporate giants are so out-of-touch with the fans that they keep doing the wrong thing over and over until they kill the franchise for good.
@person merc Honestly, there were plenty of other games to roll with on Sega, just not beyond Genesis. SF, langrisser, Phantasy Star, Altered Beast, and Golden Ax and Alex Kid were some of the best in my opinion.
My favorite Sega Console is the Saturn and I lobe their wide variety of games like the Saturn Shining trilogy, Panzer Dragoon Sagas, Dragon Force, Guardian heroes, Mysteria, Legend of Oasis and even Dark Savior

The first and second Shining Force games could compete with many Fire Emblem titles in terms of fun.

Shining the Holy Ark is one of my favorites
I loved it's huge dungeons and the play dynamic that let you have a pre-emptive attack if you juked the enemy from the direction it came before battle. Good times.
It's actually my favorite RPG of all time, and that is up against stiff competition such as EarthBound, Mother 3, the Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Demons' Souls, Deus Ex (the 2000 original), Skies of Arcadia, and Panzer Dragoon Saga.
This is one of my favorite rpg and strategy games of all times!
Putting Cyrille in the thumbnail was an inspired move.

This series and Skies of Arcadia are the biggest tragedies in rpg gaming.

Why is it too difficult for Sega to port or remake SF 3 with all 3 senarios, I would be so down to play all of them.
It died after the Sega Saturn.
I still remember getting my Game Gear with Shining Force in the summer 1995. Awesome.
I loved this game as a kid. I had no idea there were so many games 😯

Shining Force III, Scenarios 1-3, remains my favorite rpg of all time, still to this day
I like shining force 1, 2 and shining in the darkness. One of the best games I've ever played, and I really like the art style they used back then. It was more western-like rather then anime style-like characteristics.
Exa was the only one I played and I actually enjoyed it a lot
I enjoyed EXA. I unfortunately played it before Neo. I am struggling to want to finish neo. The story isn't as good as exa.

SEGA really dropped the ball on a beloved franchise, Shining Force. It should have gotten as much attention as Fire Emblem did by Nintendo.
Yeah, they should make more SF Strategy RPGs. Nothing against Shining Resonance but that ain't Shining anymore.

Shining force 3 was a masterpiece even as one game. Now all three are easily playable in english through emulation. The brand died when camelot left. The music, story and battle design all hit a pincacle on sf3. Down hill since
It left Sega and went to Nintendo. All of the stuff that was in the Shining series on Saturn ended up in Golden Sun on GBA and DS.
