I need golden sun to come back, I already miss it too much. We need more people to make the series relevant again so that they can make a new one, it’s been too damm long :(
I feel that way about plenty of series, but sometimes it's better to leave them dead, lest their company murder them even further. I've heard Dark Dawn isn't the best thing ever created...
@@Caspicum ehh I liked Dark Dawn alot, and so have most other people I've talked too about it, although it simply isn't as good as the original I don't think they did any murdering, and I can imagine a game that is as good as Dark Dawn would do well
TH-cam knows I like Golden Sun so much that any video with that in the title is recommended to me, which I greatly appreciate. Great video! I tried to play this game once upon a time and I didn't get far. Hope you enjoy GS; personally I prefer the Lost Age due to the more open world and better difficulty. Definitely a sub from me.
I'll just have to put "Golden Sun" in every video title from now on, destroying any good faith we have between us. It seems that a lot of people (more than I thought anyway) have tried Beyond the Beyond, and largely have the same opinions. Thanks for the comment!
This is one of my favorite games. Love that it's from the same folks behind Landstalker, Shining Force, Beyond The Beyond, Golden Sun...it's all got these funky similarities. I believe one of the shoulder buttons also performs commands like Talk and Search in addition to Triangle, too. It's what I did most of the time? Been a few months since I finished this again. The active play system stuff is....wild, but if you hear an actual chime, it means you did something, rather than it triggering by chance. Even strategy guides and the manual for the game say there's different buttons to hit for different times, but Triangle and X are the only ones I've gotten consistent effects from, but it's so good when someone is near death, you block, or even better, they loose all their VP but do the instant recovery thing. Felt like you were pushing them to get back up immediately. Glad you bring up the best bug in the game with the items just cuts magic damage by half for what you think is only 1 battle, but it's permanent on the character you use it on for the rest of the game. Wild. The light orb thing is even worse if you don't find the extra 3 party members..... Tont is hard to miss, Lorele is very easy to miss....and well.... .....it looks like you killed Percy. I love this game but you're absolutely right. It's a product of its time in a way that hasn't aged super well or learned from its peers. It's interesting to see how the Shining series creators made such expressive and light hearted games, created the PS1s first RPG, but also made it much much more melancholy than anything they made before on the Genesis. Good shit. Looking forward to your Golden Sun videos!
The shoulder button would've been much, much nicer. I think I did try all the buttons, but face buttons for interaction is so deeply ingrained, it's hard to stop. I didn't kill Percy though! The game fed me quite enough cues to know that something was up, specifically when he saved the party and then argued with himself. I kept defending because he was doing minuscule damage anyway, and ended up with Percy back. Unfortunately, he wasn't as strong as Samson, and had entry-level magic, so I used him a little bit and sent him to a random city, but a neat little addition regardless.
Beyond the Beyond is an all-time favorite of mine. It has some very key flaws that are addressed (accurately) here, but I will still always have a lot of love for it.
"Beyond the Beyond" is one of those titles that turns into complete word salad after you've heard it repeated a couple of times. The word "beyond" stops feeling like actual English and becomes some kind of bizarre onomatopoeia. It's not quite as baffling as "Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3", "Bravely Second: End Layer", or the completely bonkers "Gun Force: Battle Fire Engulfed Terror Island", but it definitely reminds me of those weird Japanese t-shirts with adorable Engrish printed on them.
One of my favourites is "Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs the Soulless Army" It's like the third game in the Devil Summoner sub-series, so you can't even really just call it Devil Summoner. Fucking Atlus.
Cinnamon Noir atlas IS a touchy subject when laying foundations after all lol. Ahh, the joy of living in the ouroboros of Life! Earth-Chan still approves... For now!
It's bizarre enough that I felt a need to have it as the 'intro'. Had I more time, I probably would've just gone through the entire Camelot lineup, golf RPGs and all.
I'm going to bust out this old chestnut. I'm going to replay this soon, and I can't watch this video.I thought we talked about this. You SAID you were going to do better!
It's quite literally the inbetween point. Even though Shining Force continued on, between the original couple games and Shining Force, this monstrosity reared its ugly head.
Thanks TH-cam Recommendations! This was a nice watch. I really enjoy this game, I got a copy of it around 1997ish, I had just finished FFVII and wanted something a little more akin to Dragon Quest and this didn't disappoint (Me). It's hard as nails, and I think the lack of bosses is probably a result of the frequency of encounters. If you notice, each boss has a totally unrealistic VP count that makes it take 10+ minutes and don't get me started on the amount of Mage's Potions you might blow through! It has a nice soundtrack though, the pixel art is fantastic and it really gave me an enjoyable, even if frustrating at times, experience!
Hiroyuki Takahashi was a producer on DQ3 so that's probably why. He also said Shining Force was intended to have the explorative feel of Dragon Quest with better combat.
That's interesting. DQ3 was always the black sheep of the early games, for better or worse. I need to play Shining Force properly, I've always felt there was a bit more to it than a standard grid-based RPG, solely based on the 2 or 3 stages I play for footage.
This game was hard...like...regular Nintendo hard. I can't believe I bought Beyond the Beyond over Suikoden back in 1996 because of the box art.... Great video, very nostalgic.
Great video! This is actually a game I’ve gotten requested to cover myself. I bought a copy but haven’t put any time into it yet. I had heard from others that the game was blah to outright bad. It’s good to see they were some interesting ideas to it at the least. I’m going to have to give it a shot soon. :)
Go for it! I also picked it up recently. Saw it for 500 yen on a shelf in Japan and couldn't say no. I just wanted to have it because it's a PS1 game and I love those things.
I had beaten Golden Sun before I put this video out, since it takes me so long to write/edit, and I gotta say... More will be revealed in the video! :^)
Fuck ludonarritive dissonance. Back in my day if you punched a trash can, a freshly cooked Turkey popped out. You absorbed it with your feet, or budget allowing, your hand & it refilled your health. And we loved it!
Hey Casp, never commented before so I wanted to say thanks for the hilarious reviews. Often other reviews come off dry but informative and its great you take a different approach. Maybe someone's already pointed out but a LP like system is used in the Romancing Saga games. Worth a play through. And if you don't kill that Black Knight "kinda boss," he's a secret character from earlier. Just defend, heal, and wait it out. Keep being awesome.
a few years ago I spent some time trying to figure out the secret to the "interactive combat" and came to the conclusion that the input requirements is random and changes constantly. on emulator i made a savestate right before an attack and during that savestate I got something like "left down right X" to always perform a certain special attack but it only worked at that specific time. for a game that had an insanely high encounter rate to not have the special attacks be repeatable doesn't make a lot of sense to me...the best luck I had in repeating special attacks was mashing both the d-pad and the face buttons.
Yeah, that's definitely not a great mechanic. I think I said it in the video, but from whatever info I could find on the internet, most people recommended just mashing the face buttons. I found it worked more frequently just with X but that could totally be a Pokemon-esque thing where your mates are you "HOLD DOWN AND B TO INCREASE THE CAPTURE RATE!" So many criticals triggered without me realising there was an active interfacing system, so I would love a system that breaks it down and figures out how it ticks. After playing shish like Legend of Dragoon, it seems like a wasted opportunity to make a stand-out game experience, but here we are nearly 25 years later.
Casp I enjoyed the towns, the music, even the dungeons in the first half. I thought it was quite atmospheric. It's nothing special, no, but it was still enjoyable to me. I liked for instance the cave with the sleeping dragon and the giant tree. However, once you start on your way to Bandore, everything becomes very bland and it's just battle after battle. It's sad because I really liked both Shining Force and Golden Sun. GS has some huge gaping plot holes that bother me, but the gameplay is very solid.
love the battle sprites and animations. I'd love something modern from camelot but made in pixel art. This, shining force and golden sun just had a special charm
They need to release a bundle that has this and all the golden sun games. I'd like for them to balance this game out though, it was really flipping hard lol, but a cute little adventure.
It was a time of RPG drought. I remember RPG was only famous in japan, and western market was more interested in action adventure/rpg. I remember wanting this game so much when i read about it in a game magazine. I was still around 12 or 13 at that time. But man, the random encounter rate is hellish.
One of the harder RPG's I've played, have owned a copy since it first came out. I was near the end, took a long break, finally looked online many years after at an FAQ to find the last tablet near the end (it was on a small island I never saw in past playthroughs), opened the last area, and finally beat the game. It's not a bad RPG, from the people behind Shining Force, sure the graphics won't push the PS1 to it's limits, but the pixel art is beautiful.
Beyond the Beyond was my first RPG that I actually understood what was going on. Granted I was 5 when I played it, but my mom loved it and beat it many times. I used her as a strategy guide for 3/4ths of the game and eventually beat it. Took me over a year to do as a kid because I would get frustrated, load up SMB3 and play that instead. I was also trying to play FF1 at the time too because I liked the way RPGs played. I gave this game another go during the pandemic and was surprised to see that it stands up as a classic but if you're looking for something with an unfair challenge type of classic.
It's only really unfair in the final dungeon, everything up to that point is achievable. I can't even remember what I said about it, but I do remember being a little harsh. There're certain parts where I definitely get quitting to play SMB3 though, I love RPGs, but I would happily quit like half of them to fuck around in Mario.
The two dungeons I hated were the Shrine of Discipline, before you class change, and the optional ice cave. I do say unfair because the random encounter rate is so high and sometimes you can run into a group of monsters that just roughs you up too much and just have to go back to town most of the time.
I agree about the Bosses, while I don't think the game would've been better if it was completely laden with them, but I think a few more would've helped; those two Twin Trees you climb and descend while fleeing from Marion Kingdom after Samson is cursed is one such place; the second tree is full of massive spider webs and the last floor is completely empty, no chests, no pots; just an empty space full of webs, my point; I was expecting to have to fight a large Arachnid type foe there and didn't. I think the Volcano should've had more than a mandatory strong Mooks battle too, same with Marion Castle when you retake it; the Evil Summoner/Ogres battle in the tower where Ramue puts that mask on [Name Remove due to Spoilers] should've been a fight against Ramue in my opinion or even just an actual boss.
I'm late but heres a nice tip in regards to reducing magic damage from enemies. Find and use Resist Jewels, one use on each character. One use will cut enemy magic damage in half PERMANENTLY. I learned it from a guide years ago and it helped a lot. Some can be found but I think Resist Jewels can be bought from the Secret Merchant hidden in Barbaros after it gets destroyed.
@@Caspicum Yup. I didn't even flinch during the later fights. I also drew diagrams for the Discipline Shrine and followed along with my finger. Made that dungeon easy work.
I remember owning Beyond the Beyond. I played for all of an hour, but the graphics drove me crazy. Don't get me wrong: I love 2D RPGs, but the sprites were so poorly animated: every single emotion was represented with the sprite growing and shrinking in size. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT EMOTION THAT IS!!! I don't think I even made it far enough to see the "cool" battle graphics, and I was shocked years later when I found out the price of the game skyrocketed long after I lost track of my copy. And for the record, I also love random encounters. P.S.: Oops, the video talked about the random shrinking. Guess I got ahead of myself. "If it doesn't gradually ramp up to fighting god in a space-time vortex, is it even a JRPG?" This is now one of my favorite quotations.
Golden Sun kinda does the shrinky-bobby-sprite-shit, but it seems a bit more controlled. It's still neat, but would've been better if it happened as the text was moving, and accompanied different faces, as opposed to a flat face, and independently occurring. It is what it is!
I was literally just looking at a bunch of Camelot games and here you are with the content for the game I was going to play. So tell me Casp. When did you acquire the ability to see into my mind?
"the drought was so bad, people would buy anything that was an RPG." Secret of Mana remake anyone? Final Fantasy Online? Dark Souls(backsthap) remastered?
Nah, I stopped before I got there. I know my friend keeps telling me it gets better at that point, but I mean if you make a game with 70 levels and only the last 20 are fun, what's the point?
Well 1-50 is pretty much a tutorial and thankfully, SE made levelling from 1-50 much faster than it was back in 2013 (level cap was 50 and the story was typical anime garbage that even had filler! Extreme Primals and Binding Coils of Bahamut were fun, though. Binding Coils was pretty much the best story in the ARR days). 50-70 is pretty much getting a feel for your Jobs rotation; what you can do and what works the best for you (though look up a guide so you know you're not doing something horribly wrong). At the moment, God Kefka is the final boss of the Interdimensional Rift (Savage) raid.
I just find it really odd that you've got fifty levels of filler, that to me is strange! The game itself is smooth, I just don't like the setting as much. I'm sure it's probably the best MMO out right now, but I dunno why they can't make another one like EverQuest. That was so, so great, it was just the greatest.
I remember the dame shit but I don't remember the happy merchant thing. I've made some horrible decisions with videos in the past tbh. I stand by the dame shit his laugh is great, but god damn there's some regret.
@@Caspicum do you watch the killstream or are you familiar with that corner of the internet at all? And honestly I'm not knocking you for anything you've done in your vids. I discovered your channel last night and I've been marathoning it since then, good shit man. It's refreshing to hear a gaming vid that is actually edgier with the humor than an episode of Barny and Friends.
Seems way more a Shining Force that Golden Sun to me - most of the issues you describe seem to be due to transition from tactical to simple turn-based.
I'd definitely say it's closer to Golden Sun, specifically the approach to story elements and general gameplay, but even Golden Sun borrows elements from Shining Force.
Holy crap. Never knew this game was made by Camelot. I had this back in the day, disc ended up getting broken, and I could never find a replacement, it made me pretty sad. I had enjoyed it quite a bit, nice to see it actually does exist and I'm not crazy!
I don't know what it is about PS1 games, but they were so susceptible to the disks getting broken. I had like 5 copies of Crash Bash because they kept getting shattered. The universe didn't want me to own Crash Bash, it seems. That's super rad that you had this as a kid though! Replacements nowadays would be cheap, I think it's still fairly cheap in USD, but I found a copy for about $5 in Japan, so clearly nobody wants it!
My greatest problem with the series (since golden Sun also have it) is that the puzzle dungeons random encounters was solved already by Lufia 2 having visible encounters. Also funny how you didn't mention the WALLS OF TEXT and how characters don't know how to shut up, that's a hug game breaker or me. Great video, I love that you take even the obscurest RPG.
I didn't really notice that in Beyond, I think the text-bloat was far worse in Golden Sun, where mother fuckers refuse to stop asking you meaningless questions that you have to answer despite it having no impact on the story, and only changing a handful of meaningless lines from certain characters. Lufia 2 is a good boy though. I gotta get on that series at some point, because it has like 2 or 3 spin-offs I never played, but severely want to.
Game looks so cool. Shame it sucks so bad. And by the way Golden Sun fixes all those problems. Especially the difficulty. In fact I would say they fixed that part to much.
I'm so far ahead of my video release schedule I've already cleared the original Golden Sun. Gotta say, it's an interesting little game. Looking forward to dropping that video.
Casp Do you have any guess as to how long it will be before we see the Golden Sun video? This was the first video of yours I've seen (subbed and have been watching older ones since), and Golden Sun is really near and dear to my heart, but I kinda get the feeling that it might be a while based on the frequency of your other uploads.
Yeah, I'm pretty bad when it comes to a schedule, and I just got back from a week-long vacation, so I'm honestly not too sure. That said, I beat Golden Sun before I left, all I have to do now is write the thing, then record and edit. Maybe a couple weeks more. I will try to speed it up though! FOR YOU!
I know sliding puzzles are easy, but I have such an irrational pure and utter hatred for them that I know it would bug me to the ends of the earth. Either way, seems like I’ve got a game to play before I give Golden Sun a go.
I love Dragon Quest 7! I played the 3DS release quite recently, and I love the attention and focus it puts on the side stories and characters. That one side story with the robot caring for the old bloke was equally tragic and up-lifting. God, that's a fantastic game.
Lots of people hated it but I loved Beyond the Beyond. I played this when I was 12 and then again when I was 24 and I still enjoyed it. The soundtrack and story were great and I liked the difficulty even. I don't understand the hate.
It's just all the small things that add up. It seems like it might've been rushed a little in order to be the first JRPG on the PS1, but that's purely speculation. That said, if it's up your alley, more power to you!
Not sure if you're being sarcastic about Shining Force, but you should play it if you haven't. The game boy version has a lot more back story and shit actually makes sense. Play it. :)
I won't argue on the grinding part. But aren't all Jrpg games somewhat of a grind? :P Besides at least with the gba version you get a backstory for each character (if you actually care that is) which is a lot better than just having a bunch of stat meatheads in the barracks. It is a bit of a nostalgia thing for me, but since Shining force 1 and 2 and Phantasy star 2-4 were the ones that got me into Jrpgs, I think it was a pretty good starting point.
If you haven't played Golden Sun yet, oh boy, you're in for a treat. GS 1 is a great game, and 2 is a fantastic sequel, just try to ignore the existence of Dark Dawn.
I am one of those who got this game just because I had a PSX and needed an RPG before FF7 was released. I still can't believe I finished this thing. It is BRUTAL in its random encounters. Most of the fights are not all that fun, and without bosses that is all you have. The dungeons he mentions as being a pain in the ass are understated. The internet wasn't quite in its stride yet, so you were doing a lot of this shit on your own or not at all. I think some dungeons were flat out only possible by save spamming (I am pretty sure you could save anywhere in it, from what I recall) and hoping you ran away from a fight the first time, if not reloading and trying again until you got out of the dungeon. Well, I remember the music being ok at least. I blame this game on why I never was able to get in to golden sun.
I'm so sorry you had to experience this without some sort of internet reference guide. That second last dungeon would've legit made me put the game down forever without some sort of help. I try not to get too hyperbolic or extremist with any statement, but I was possibly a little light on the dungeon design. It is truly nightmarish.
They def reuse audio assets between their games. I don’t remember which Mario Golf specifically, but the “text writing” tone is the same as the GBA/DS Golden Sun games. I think it’s advanced tour, so maybe GS uses the MG asset. It’s noticeably the same slightly squeaky sound.
Thanks! I just finished Owlboy and have been on a beautiful pixel art/ sprite animation kick. A lot of the environmental art reminded me of Golden Sun, hence how I stumbled on to this video. :p
@@Caspicum Though I'm usually hesitant to dive into lenthy jrpgs these days I'm seriously considering giving Breath of Fire IV a shot because of that beautiful spritework and maybe going back to 3 afterwards.
Definitely give them a try. Breath of Fire 3 has a PSP version, but the PS1 versions are also on PSN, so if you've got a PSP/Vita/whatever, it's very accessible!
My brother and I were huge Shining Force fans and were super pumped to get this on PS1 at the time. It really is EXACTLY the Shining Force aesthetic template translated to traditional RPG. While this team are ace at strategy RPGs, I think their dungeon design (which they didn't really have to do in Shining Force) was weak. The random encounters were WAY too much. We were a bit dissapointed in the non-battle graphics too - as they were barely above what they did for Shining Force on the Genesis. We couldn't finish this game, but when Suikoden came out, we ate that up.
A lot of the magazines post-Beyond and pre-Suikoden were talking about the raw hype for the ol' 108 stars of destiny, and generally shitting on Beyond, so you must've been included in that collective! What a time to be alive, when people not only knew what Suikoden was, but were also excited for it.
Casp O'Saurus Shining Force laid down the foundation, but Shining Force II has a much better plot and a larger cast of characters. The fighting system was improved as well, with your characters sometimes getting a second strike when attacking or dodging and getting a counter. It’s pretty in-depth with the promotion system. It was the Suikoden II of the Genesis/Mega Drive.
This game needs a reboot or a sequel. Gold Sun is good, but this game IS its own game. The ending (spoiler) screams for a sequel. A whole other world is out there. It was the first game I played on PS1. The music is memorable. The challenge was great. The story was actually ok, not bad at all, but you could tell they were getting off the ground. When Gold Sun games came out, they got it down. They can do the same for this -_-
As much as it was a chore to get through, I'd be super keen for a remake or a sequel with the same style. It was super hard, but also pretty rewarding once you got it all down.
IMO the worst PS1 RPG ever. I bought it at launch because I was young, new to RPGs, and was really excited to see what PS1 could do with RPGs. I didn't know I had a steaming turd until the next JRPG was released on the system, I just had a strong gut feeling this game was garbage. Bless you for making it through the hell that was this game
I'm not sure if you hated on God of War and Persona in this video but if you did I'm... Not mad because even though I love both games I respect your opinion
I haven't played the new God of War except for the footage for this video, but I'm not particularly keen on AAA titles because of their hand-holding tendencies. As for Persona... It's a cool guy when they're not dancing.
I Consider Beyond The Beyond in the top 10 RPGs of all time even still to this day. I first beat it in the fall of 1998 JUST before Pokemon Red and Blue released in the USA and I have since restarted and beaten it around 20 or 25 additional times. I LOVE your Breath of Fire 3 and 4, legend of dragoon, and Golden Sun references, HOWEVER, while Beyond The Beyond WAS the first RPG released ON THE PLAY STATION, there are a number of others that precede it such as Breath of Fire released on the SNES in 1994 and Breath of Fire 2 which released on the SNES in 1995. Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest, the Legend of Zelda, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings Vol. 1 ALL precede Beyond the Beyond on Nintendo's Platforms as well as many others. The "X button mashing" DOES INDEED work but I only use it when my characters are recovering from the "groggy" status condition (When character is orange after VP hits Zero). The original Phantasy Star and J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings Vol. 1 ARE FAR AND ABOVE more difficult than games like Beyond the Beyond. Even Mega Man and Final Fantasy predate and ARE more difficult than this game. Tip for anyone playing Beyond the Beyond: MAKE SURE you have Finn (Protagonist's default name fyi) at or above level 42 BEFORE you attempt the Isle of Discipleine Labyrinth Dungeon to class change because EVERY CHARACTER after level 41 will have their "level up stat increases" stunted and almost or completely non-existent upon leve-up. Also, 12 or so turns defending and healing yourself in the "boss" battle against "The Black Knight" WITHOUT killing him and he will run away and near the end of the game, Percy, aka Annie's Brother, will rejoin your party. I have played and beaten 100's of JRPGs and RPGs over my 27 years of playing Video Games some 100's or even 1000's of times and very few top the AWESOMENESS that is Beyond the Beyond!!!
There was no way I was getting to level 41 pre-class-shift. I think I was late 20s, and couldn't be buggered grinding since the game was fairly easy up until that point. The only boss I struggled with up until that point was the first one because I wasn't prepared. Interesting that the game allows you to get to level 41 without punishing you though, but there's no real room to move past the late-20s without intense grinding. I didn't actually kill the black knight either! A lot of people have commented that, but I attacked him a couple times then realised he was doing no damage, and the game heavily alludes to him being an ally, so I kept defending and got Percy back, although he's completely useless, it was still nice to have him!
Casp I can't say I blame you for not grinding hard core to reach level 41 and I am one of few people that would grind continuously for at least 10-15 hours of gameplay EVERY time I play through this game and a hint if you didn't already know but if your character doesn't learn all of their magic BEFORE the class change it takes them the additional levels in their advanced to learn the basic class's magic they missed at first and then learn the magic of their advanced classes. However, the reverse is also true as in one of my playthroughs of it I leveled my party to the hi 70's and Annie and Edward both learned and knew all of the advanced class magic by level 2 of the advanced class. And I can say that I had a bit of trouble with the Water Demon in the Gaea Shrine but if you HAVE NOT used the moon Crescent in the port town of Luna to enjoy the night life yet you can save your game INSIDE Luna's church, reset the game, and as soon as you reload your file go to the vase collector and BUY a vase for a paltry 200 G for 1 of 4 vases that sell for NO LESS than 7500 G at Luna's shop OR can be used as a 1 time use of the magics Firedrake level 2, Titan Level 2, Undhine Level 2, or Tolle Level 2. This process can be repeated endlessly until you enter Luna at night but REMEMBER you MUST save, reset, and reload EVERY TIME from Luna's Church to "refresh" the vases that I mentioned and you can't purchase more than 1 each time! The Vase of Life IS STILL MORE VALUABLE than his "friend" though lol!
Actually, this game took the life points thing from squaresofts saga series which shouldnt be too surprising to me i guess since it also obviously takes a lot from dragon quest too. And considering how popular in japan saga is I guess it makes sense? Great games btw
SaGa series is on my hit-list of stuff I want to cover. Apparently nobody really knows how Unlimited SaGa works, and that makes me want to play it even more.
@@Caspicum I used to have unlimited saga. unlike literally all the saga games before it theres barely any payoff to actually understanding the mechanics. Basically if you're a hardcore d&d fan is the only way you'll ever remotely like it. Music's literally the best thing about it
"The worst dungeon in any JRPG I've ever played ever." Casp, you need to play Phantasy Star 2, get to Dezoris (the ice planet), and experience the joy that is the buried pyramid.
I feel some of the complaints you got are well... just that like you said it's a 1995/6 RPG you're expecting a bit too much. Also most games that get localized to the west are made intentionally harder that's why older RPGs like the Breath of Fire Series had what seemed like crazy encounter rates in actually it was made intentionally for western audiences
I wonder of this was made harder, or if they had no idea how to comfortably balance a game. I don't mind so much, especially since there's a way to break the game with stupidly high magic resistance, but idk man, 95/96 isn't any excuse. By that point, we already had two Breath of Fires, a Suikoden, Chrono Trigger, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy 4, 5, and 6, with 7 just on the horizon. None of these games are particularly well known for being super balanced or clean, but they did a much better job than Beyond the Beyond. I feel like they fine-tuned it for Golden Sun though.
It looks like Disgaea or something else by Atlus, I think. Or maybe Breath of Fire IV? It kinda looks like that too. Just basing these guesses off the art style to try and give u somewhere to start looking.
Beyond the Beyond was the first JRPG I ever hated. Sometimes I think I should give it another chance now that I'm older and wiser... but then I watch someone else play it and just nope right out of that.
Yeah, it's got some big issues unfortunately. Everything is always worth a play just to confirm reports of tedium/garb status, but I will confirm you're not missing much.
Motion sickness Synonyms Kinetosis, travel sickness, seasickness Specialty Neurology Motion sickness is a condition in which a disagreement exists between visually perceived movement and the vestibular system's sense of movement. Depending on the cause, it can also be referred to as seasickness, car sickness, simulation sickness or airsickness.[1] Dizziness, fatigue and nausea are the most common symptoms of motion sickness.[2] Sopite syndrome, in which a person feels fatigue or tiredness, is also associated with motion sickness. "Nausea" in Greek means seasickness (naus means ship).[3][4] If the motion causing nausea is not resolved, the sufferer will usually vomit. Vomiting often will not relieve the feeling of weakness and nausea, which means the person might continue to vomit until the cause of the nausea is treated.
I KNOW! And dark dawn ended on a hige cliffhanger!
@@Caspicum the biggest sin of Dark Dawn was the cliffhanger with no follow up! It's not as good as the two originals but it's still a decent game.
@@Caspicum ehh I liked Dark Dawn alot, and so have most other people I've talked too about it, although it simply isn't as good as the original
I don't think they did any murdering, and I can imagine a game that is as good as Dark Dawn would do well
@@thomasmacdonough288 it was good it just didn't sell well also I really am not sure what Camelot is up to now.
Holy shit is that menu not making the NPCs freeze a bad idea.
Golden Sun does it too, but they were smart enough to not make the game overly menu-reliant.
Weird. I never even noticed so yeah I guess you're right.
At least the second Phantasy Star did that too.
Really?
TH-cam constantly shows me fortnite and roblox streams
It’s not enjoyable to say the least
I'm sorry for your loss.
Dont worry my man, golden sun lowers the encounter rate in puzzle rooms, its great
Yep! They're almost entirely absent, sans for a handful of rooms. THEY LEARNED THEIR LESSON!
Casp they learned a handful of other lessons too!
Lol pussies

It's how the first boss did a victory dance after beating you.
"Water Demon did gooood!" lol
honestly, he deserved it. dance away, king
Cinnamon Noir Darkrai = Darkdark lol!
One of my favourites is "Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs the Soulless Army"
It's like the third game in the Devil Summoner sub-series, so you can't even really just call it Devil Summoner. Fucking Atlus.
My word, that _is_ a mouthful.
Cinnamon Noir atlas IS a touchy subject when laying foundations after all lol. Ahh, the joy of living in the ouroboros of Life! Earth-Chan still approves... For now!
Casp you know Android just dropped Shin Megami Tensei on mobile about 2 days ago and it is looking AWESOME as ever!
Great video man, can't wait to see your perspective on the Golden Sun series.
Me either!
Didn't expect this, thought you'd talk about Golden sun proper. But it's nice to see what is pretty much a beta of the series in an odd form.
Ok, I watched 3min, but no more!
I dont even know this game existed, but I watched the whole video because Daddy Casp's voice is thicc.
And Legend of Dragooon shout out
Love me some Legend of Dragoon.
I love how this feels like a point in-between shining force and golden sun somehow
It's quite literally the inbetween point. Even though Shining Force continued on, between the original couple games and Shining Force, this monstrosity reared its ugly head.
This game looks interesting. Now that I have a PS2, I might pick up a copy if I can find it.
"Occasionally decent Mario sports games"
*Looks over at Mario Tennis Aces*
Oh daddy Casp, get with the times. Aces is great.
It has Waluigi, it couldn't be anything but great.
I'm twenty two seconds in and brand new to your channel and I already know we're gonna go places.
Welcome! Hopefully I don't piss you off too much!
Shining Force and Golden Sun are among my most loved game series. I would love a remaster of them! ^_^
This little game as an RPG is freaking amazing. I absolutely love it.
Thanks to your video I found out it game existed and today I managed to add it to my collection for a steal. Thanks for the video.
Glad I could help! It's one of the few physical games I still own even though I can't stand it. Nice shelf bulker.
As a Golden Sun fan, I enjoyed this video. Interesting stuff!
I'm glad you got something from it! Thanks for the comment!
Oh no... YOU COULD'VE HAD SUIKODEN!!!
At least you had a unique experience, I guess!
I really hope you like Golden Sun It's probably one of my favorite JRPG game ever.....Also Nice video.....might check out Beyond the Beyond.
I've always stepped on food to eat it, tbh.
Dude I played this waaay back in 97. I had no idea it was a series lol
Its not necessarily a series, it was just made by the same people who made the Golden Sun series. Similar mechanics, different continuity
Spiritual precursor would be an apt title.
a golden sun video? SUBSCRIBED!
holy shit, i'm a huge fan... will play this game.
Give it a go! I'd also recommend Shining Force from what little I played of it. Shares some decent similarities.
That painting is a cutie! haha
Second!
Second like.
When are you gonna talk about Undertale, I know U want to!
I look forward to you playing it's spiritual sequel, Beyond: Two Souls
Selection Simulator: Max Les Edition
a few years ago I spent some time trying to figure out the secret to the "interactive combat" and came to the conclusion that the input requirements is random and changes constantly. on emulator i made a savestate right before an attack and during that savestate I got something like "left down right X" to always perform a certain special attack but it only worked at that specific time. for a game that had an insanely high encounter rate to not have the special attacks be repeatable doesn't make a lot of sense to me...the best luck I had in repeating special attacks was mashing both the d-pad and the face buttons.
Yeah, that's definitely not a great mechanic. I think I said it in the video, but from whatever info I could find on the internet, most people recommended just mashing the face buttons. I found it worked more frequently just with X but that could totally be a Pokemon-esque thing where your mates are you "HOLD DOWN AND B TO INCREASE THE CAPTURE RATE!"
So many criticals triggered without me realising there was an active interfacing system, so I would love a system that breaks it down and figures out how it ticks. After playing shish like Legend of Dragoon, it seems like a wasted opportunity to make a stand-out game experience, but here we are nearly 25 years later.
I owned the "four disc" set of beyond the beyond for PlayStation 1. I didn't know it was related to Golden Sun at all
6:48-6:54 Ooooh that sick burn
honestly expecting to cringe, but not a horrible joke
@@Caspicum Its not joke, its absolutely true. SMT player here and you know that's one of the reasons Persona broke out.
I find the first half-ish of the game to be pretty enjoyable, though very hard. The second half though is like 99% random battles and 1% story.
The first half doesn't even have much redeeming, it's just a comfy romp. The second half is an absolute chore though, completely agree.
Yeah, they definitely did some amazing things with pixel art, but it's unfortunate about the rest of it.
You WILL enjoy Golden Sun (+ GS The Lost Age, of course). It has been and still is my favorite piece of RPG.
I've heard a lot of people praise it to no end, so here's hoping they're right!
Oh god I remember getting destroyed by random mobs. You've brought it all back to me.
Oh! I love The!
Damn those battle sprites have aged really well. Imagine if the whole game used sprites like that.
You sir, are hilarious. Lol subscribed👍
I appreciate that! The focus definitely isn't comedic, but a few slips of some off-coloured humour don't go astray.
I remember getting one from the bed in some inn and it helped me clock the game. May not have been possible without it, ngl.
I loved this game on the PS1 when it came out. I do think it took me at least 60 hrs back then. I had a lot of trouble memorizing those harder levels.
tru tru.
I was literally just looking at a bunch of Camelot games and here you are with the content for the game I was going to play. So tell me Casp. When did you acquire the ability to see into my mind?
It's a curse. There's some fucked-up shit in here.
I love Beyond the Beyond. It's a total guilty pleasure game
"the drought was so bad, people would buy anything that was an RPG." Secret of Mana remake anyone? Final Fantasy Online? Dark Souls(backsthap) remastered?
To be fair, FFXI and XIV are pretty great.
You've done the Extreme Trials and Raids (Alliance and Normal/Savage), right?
Two things:
1 Nice video.
2 Dongus.
Did he just say the F Slur????
That's AWESOME!!!!!
I'd never say the frick word.
@@Caspicum also I think I just saw you drop a dame pesos and happy merchant reference in another vid, that was incredibly based and redpilled of you
I remember the dame shit but I don't remember the happy merchant thing.
1:09 boy does that hit hard lmao
god i forgot how awful and dated this video is, but that joke was *okay*.
3:19 well that’s aged well...
defo a bit cringe tbh
I want to like this game so bad:(
R Star I know. I feel the same way.
Those old school RPG is brutal
Either way, seems like I’ve got a game to play before I give Golden Sun a go.
i I love golden sun. When you're finished you should do the dragon quest games. I think you'll especially like 7.
I beat Golden Sun with just Ivan. great job on this review btw.
That's incredibly impressive. God, I hate Ivan so much.
+Casp he's actually my favorite character lol I have to restart my solo Jenna run
This needs a remake with the quality of life improvements made in golden sun but keep the story and art style intact.
I'd honestly dig a remake of Beyond. It had some great ideas.
Good job TH-cam recommendations.
Sometimes TH-cam does well!
The graphics engine look exactly like lunar
like, holy shit didnt even notice that a year ago
Serious? Might have to finally play Lunar
Not sure if you're being sarcastic about Shining Force, but you should play it if you haven't. The game boy version has a lot more back story and shit actually makes sense. Play it. :)
Shining Force is just a mindless grinding "strategy" game, much like Fire Emblem Awakening (oh the Horror!).
The art and music are really good tho.
Play a real man's fantasy strategy RPG like Langrisser.
If you haven't played Golden Sun yet, oh boy, you're in for a treat. GS 1 is a great game, and 2 is a fantastic sequel, just try to ignore the existence of Dark Dawn.
but dark dawn is part 3 :(
I am one of those who got this game just because I had a PSX and needed an RPG before FF7 was released.
Oh that's sick. I'll have to replay Mario Golf soon and give it a listen!
What's the game at 12:30? The sprites and animation look awesome.
That be Breath of Fire 3, my dude.
Thanks! I just finished Owlboy and have been on a beautiful pixel art/ sprite animation kick. A lot of the environmental art reminded me of Golden Sun, hence how I stumbled on to this video. :p
Do yourself a favour and check out the entire Breath of Fire series... Or at least 2-4. The sprites are top-tier.
Hey. Hey hey hey. I fucking love Shining Force II. Easily one of my favorite SRPGs of all time.
I gotta get on that series. Still to this day have not played it at all.
Casp O'Saurus
Shining Force laid down the foundation, but Shining Force II has a much better plot and a larger cast of characters. The fighting system was improved as well, with your characters sometimes getting a second strike when attacking or dodging and getting a counter. It’s pretty in-depth with the promotion system. It was the Suikoden II of the Genesis/Mega Drive.
I...kind of want to get this...
If nothing else, it's an interesting piece of history. It's totally playable, but there are points where you'll be like "fuck this, I'm done"
I had a lot of RPG's for the PS1, but this was not one. I do remember reading about it in PSM...or OPM, or EGM, or GI...one or a few of those lol.
Seems you were one of the lucky few, based on the rest of the comment section!
Holy shit there's so much art overlap with Golden Sun.
great video, idk why this game reminded me of lunar 2 a bit. can you put it on the list of games you're planning on covering?
The entire Lunar series is on my hit list! I need to make these videos faster and stop being so lazy so I can cover it all before I die.
A bit off topic, but if Smash Bros Ultimate had a Golden Sun rep I'd die happy.
I hope you Smash boys get your Isaac eventually!
Harsh, but fair. I wouldn't've made it through without a walkthrough, which makes me feel dirty, but it is what it is.
why are the so many random encounters in puzzle rooms
I honestly don't know, but that's the worst thing you can do in a JRPG, straight up.
I had this one i gave up on it because its very cryptic to know where to go
I'm not sure if you hated on God of War and Persona in this video but if you did I'm...
Music's literally the best thing about it
@@attackofthecopyrightbots Damn, I've never even touched DnD proper, but that makes me even more excited for it, since JRPGs are just DnD derivatives
@@Caspicum Playing the ps1 first games does help though
"The worst dungeon in any JRPG I've ever played ever." Casp, you need to play Phantasy Star 2, get to Dezoris (the ice planet), and experience the joy that is the buried pyramid.
nooooooooooooooo
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
if there's anything more infuriating than the beyond the beyond dungeon, i don't want it >:(
13:43 OH SNAPXD
GOTTEM
This looks and is structured like Dragon Quest, you say?
Then it's just my kind of game.
based
What game was that at 12:30 ?
It looks like Disgaea or something else by Atlus, I think. Or maybe Breath of Fire IV? It kinda looks like that too. Just basing these guesses off the art style to try and give u somewhere to start looking.
Breath of Fire 3, my dude!
Golden sun series? take me now.
You point to a direction and I'll slowly creep in.
"fuck this game" -- nice summary
Seems like that's how far too many of my videos end these days...
Oh cool Shining Force
That rotatey tower interior made me need to look away. That was fucked.
Motion sickness
Synonyms Kinetosis, travel sickness, seasickness
Specialty Neurology
Motion sickness is a condition in which a disagreement exists between visually perceived movement and the vestibular system's sense of movement. Depending on the cause, it can also be referred to as seasickness, car sickness, simulation sickness or airsickness.[1]
Dizziness, fatigue and nausea are the most common symptoms of motion sickness.[2] Sopite syndrome, in which a person feels fatigue or tiredness, is also associated with motion sickness. "Nausea" in Greek means seasickness (naus means ship).[3][4] If the motion causing nausea is not resolved, the sufferer will usually vomit. Vomiting often will not relieve the feeling of weakness and nausea, which means the person might continue to vomit until the cause of the nausea is treated.
this game was hard as balls
It genuinely was, and you really noticed it in the last few dungeons.
Beyond The Beyond is not that bad if given a chance.
A little polish could have gone a long way.
I say that a lot, but I don't think it's ever been more true than in Beyond the Beyond.
So many similarities with Shining wisdom
