  • One's a pricey small premium SUV, the other a volume-selling mid-sized SUV. One is focused on clever packaging and its all-new design, the other on its size, value and driving fun.
    But most of all: one is a bit of an unknown, and the other is one of Australia's most popular cars. So which should you be considering? Read on.

    Mazda is the obvious choice for me! Although i live i Sweden and Volvos are of course all over the place, and you have better service with maintenance and spare parts etc etc, but they're priced like an Audi, and while they looks almost as nice with high quality materials, they don't offer a similar driving experience as the german cars (although they offer comfort and unmatched saftey!). Mazdas on the other hand are considerably cheaper, have nice looks and materials, good enough driving experience, great durability, and now with the skyaktiv-x with mild hybrid, android auto, 360° camera they offer almost everything (well, except self parking feature!) all in a much cheaper price, here in Sweden you'd pay 15k euros more to get all the features in the top trim Mazda model! And Mazda offer 10 years warranty in Sweden btw!

      I think Volvos have great reputation, the XC40 is getting well acceptance in the midsize SUV’s market, although his older sister the XC90 is the less reliable Volvo car atm. On the other hand Mazdas have great reselling price and good quality materials. If you have the money to pay a bit more to have a Volvo go for it, there’s no wrong or bad decision here

    Been quite a lot of moaning about the Mazda not having Apple or android compatibility . But having never owned a car with it, I don't think I'm missing out yet really. For me the Mazda is a great car for the money especially with the small improvements in the latest revamp.
    It's obvious the Volvo in this test clearly has more tech and magic storage features but that's what Volvo is about and what their game is, loads of tech that almost makes actually driving the thing redundant. I'm not buying into Volvo being a luxury brand ,with the exception of the top xc90. Volvo are offering good alternatives to those German marques that command serious spondools. But the good thing about Mazda is they are well specked for the money anyway. You certainly wouldn't go wrong with Volvo, very smart car, just something about all the features accessed from the touch screen. Sometimes a good old fashioned button or switch is all that is needed. Maybe it's a sign I'm getting old. Which is a bizarre thought when you realise it's about a Volvo 🤔

    You have strange ideas about what is a luxury brand and what is a premium brand, in my opinion, Rolls Royce, Bentley, etc are true Luxury brands, where the comfort and cosseting of the customer is the priority, high end wood trim, Leather, thick pile carpets with no cost restrictions, etc etc, that is a Luxury brand, BMW, Audi, Range Rover are called a Luxury brand by some people, but really they are in the Premium luxury sector, Volvo fits into this sector, but as with all these so called premium brands, have models that at the lower end of "Premium" market, look at Mercedes, the top models have a far superior interior to the lesser models, same as this Volvo XC40, no comparison to the XC90 for example.
    Whereas a Rolls Royce, Bentley etc will not sacrifice quality to compete with a rival, because this would lower the perceived image of a true Luxury Brand.

  • @ShabrishMenon
    @ShabrishMenon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Mazda is practicality with some luxury. It’s about getting the best value for money and premium brands spend millions of dollars just to position their brand as a premium one. They recover those hefty marketing spends by the way of huge margins which they get by charging customers higher price points. That is simply the game any luxury brand plays. If people understood that, nearly all of them would end up driving practical cars like Warren Buffet or Jeff Bezos and be frugal. There would be some cars which would be an exception from this narrative but those are only for serious auto enthusiasts who seek the thrill of driving. But that, in most cases aren’t relevant such as these two models. How much is the driving dynamics, safety, throttle response etc really different between these two cars compared? Screen response? Really - how much does these trivial things really matter!

  • @MrMazda-ih8cw

    I’ve had my XC40 on order for over 5 months now and fed up of seeing others who ordered months after me get in theirs. Some identical cars.
    Volvo’s customer service has been woeful and the dealership has been less than useless.
    Add to that the huge MY21 spec reduction that was not advertised, I’m cancelling my order and going back to BMW.
    This was the second time I’ve tried to buy a Volvo (similar thing happened and had to cancel) and I will never consider them again.
    If you want a laugh, have a look at Volvo Care.
    You too can have a base model for £999 per month! And then you need to insure it.
    So circa £1,300 p/month OTR 🤣😂😆

Even if I change the transmission fluids every 50000km, it’s not shifting smoothly from second gear to third gear. Most importantly, last time It was rear ended by an Audi A4, my rear end is nearly destroyed. If you wanna luxury with reliability, buy a Lexus. You wanna have the upper hand in low speed crashes, go for European cars or Us cars.

      Well nobody said it's a luxury. It's a lovely car to be in, but nowhere in the audi/bmw/merc/volvo territory ( unless base model ). Don't get me wrong I still love Mazda, it's just not a luxury car.

    The Mazda looks like a Cx-9, without the line across the rear lights. The Volvo’s have similar light styles throughout their models, but each one looks different and unique. What goes through people’s minds when they say that the Mazda is nicer? The Volvo is pure class, whereas the Mazda is such a cliche family car. Don’t you want something different people?! Those Thor hammer lights on the Volvo tho! 👌😍

      Nope volvo always conduct more crash tests on their own. They try to mimick real world cases and lot of different scenarios. Most manufacturers only care about nhsta crash tests and build their cars just for those specific tests. Volvo has always been about safety first.

    Mazda lacks that extra level of design that would make it on par with the Europeans. While very classy, Mazda has many cheap looking design elements and thus is still regarded as just above average "Jap/Import" styling like Toy and Honda. Japanese car companies just don't understand proper "proportions" and iconic elements. Sure, reliability is their #1 concern but they has a lot to learn about great designs.

    Please stop. The Mazda CX-5 is not mid-size. It's a compact SUV. The Volvo is a subcompact SUV. SUVs are obviously going to be slightly bigger than the equivalent cars in the same segment, but it doesn't mean that a compact SUV like the CX-5 should be misleadingly referred to as a Mid-size SUV. The CX-5 is effectively the SUV crossover equivalent of the Mazda 3 compact car, not the Mazda 6 midsize car. I know this is your job and everything, but so many people are making this mistake and it's driving me crazy.
    Other than this, it's a smart comparison, even if the two cars are from completely different segments. Good job! :)

    • @redReiRei
      @redReiRei 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vq37zu I don't know about that. The CX-3 is a tiny glorified hatchback - incredibly uncomfortable in the back, and the new CX-30 is only similar in length but smaller inside by a considerable margin. I tried both the CX-5 and XC40, and they're incredibly similar (with the CX-5 only taller by 2 cm and 10cm longer to the long front). Inside they're about the same, wheel base/clearance is larger on the Volvo and tiny bit more back legroom in the CX-5

    I find it really hard to believe that a CX5 could be more "settled" and handle better than a car that's considered the most dynamic and refined in a class where it's competing with luxury marquees. No shade to Mazda. Their cars typically handle well but better than an XC40? No so sure about that.

  • @tarsingh007
    @tarsingh007 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can compare these cars and say Mazda is a better deal. But what you're overlooking is the most important feature of a Volvo. They are the safest cars on the planet. That's what you pay premium price for aside from the luxury.
