Whenever my mother cooked a roast, she made a meat pie with the leftovers. She made her own crust from scratch. The meat pie included the leftover roast, carrots, potatoes, and gravy simmered together. While still hot, the meat mixture was poured into the crust-lined 9x13" dish. She then placed, over the steaming dish, a complete top crust. After tucking the top crust under the bottom crust, she would pierce it and brush the top with milk to make it turn brown. Then it went into a hot oven and cooked until browned. An old family recipe passed down. It is a family favorite, and I still make the dish.
Oh Jerry, this is one of my favorite videos to date! Oh, it has all the things I love… You’re cooking, your table, and learning a little bit about somebody from history from you… I have told you a zillion times you are a natural teacher, and your voice is so wonderful!may God richly richly bless you in this new year! You truly are a joy in my life! Had a bit of a rough day, but trusting God with it, and so grateful when I saw this video pop up!❤
Thank you Jeri! Every single year from the age of 14 to 27, I went to the Guthrie Theatre and would see A Christmas Carol. I remember vividly one of the actors that played Scrooge was named Richard Oohms. He has since passed away. I cried the day I learned of his passing. Nobody could play Scrooge with the enthusiasm that he did. To this day, I never go through Christmas without watching A Christmas Carol either with Alistair Sims or George C. Scott.
For some reason I love watching your cooking videos. You always make something interesting and unique. I love the antique cooking utensils and the sounds of the mixing and cracking eggs and stirring I like your choice of music. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
So beautiful, Jeri, the table setting, the leaf-framed pies, the beautiful Dickens books, and hearing your softly spoken words, as always. Wishing you a wonderfully creative and happy new year.
This was best video ever! I am stuck in bed with tea and I just loved curling up under covers to watch this. I watch your videos over and over. Without a mom now I just find them so comforting.
Charming video,......as usual!Santa Claus surprised me and gave me one of your books for Christmas signed by you,Awesome! !!!The book is great ,I pour over each page,... enjoying it ,every page! Thanks!HUGE fan,Happy New Year!
Your voice is as soothing and magical as the gorgeous table and scrumptious looking food. Love the leaf crust topping on the meat pies. They would make anyone at the table feel special. And spiced peaches and gingerbread cake.... yes, please!
Greetings Jeri, what a treasure to view and end the year was a sheer blessing. You really out did yourself on this one. Just can't wait to see what 2024 is in store . Have a very Wonderful New Year to you&yours !! 🍾🎉🎍!!
I adore any and all to do with Charles Dickens. I recommend you watch the movies Dickensian, Nicholas Nickelby, and The man who invented Christmas. I have the D56 A Christmas Carol house’s & accessories.
Yes, I mentioned Dickensian at the end of this video. The thing about it is, you really need to be familiar with the characters in his books to follow the plot.
Oh Jeri, what a delightful Charles Dickens meal. Both, the food as well as the tableware look delicious! Hello Gloucester mice... you sweet helpers! Yay, for the donkeys getting a treat! I, too, love reading Dickens too in winter. Beautiful Dickens collection!! Thank you for sharing. I, too, love 'Our Mutual Friend' and 'Bleak House'. Happy New Year, Jeri, family, and everyone!
Love Dickens! Another wonderful video featuring your antiques and animal creations. When you were making the cake batter, I felt like I was there making it. I think the sounds of eggs cracking, flour/spices sifting, and the angle of your camera made it real. Love your channel and share it with my antique-loving, bibliophile friends! ~Terri ❤ 😊
H i Jeri! Well I don’t have to tell you these are among my favorite videos you make when you cook and bake. It’s such a treat for me and I greatly appreciate all the effort you put into the productions of such videos. You are blessed with so many wonderful talents. Beautiful and very fitting music that you picked to start this video, Auld Lang Syne, Loving Caliber…. Beautiful song… this song literally brings joyful tears to my eyes. I can just taste that cake and how wonderful it it must be to go with a French pressed coffee. You brunch setting is stunning ! The meat pie is very interesting, they look perfect, I have never had one but I know they are big in the UK. Interesting info on Dickens. Thank you Jeri! And Happy New Year ! 🥳
Unfortunately, we both caught the flu after Christmas and all our beautiful leftovers went to the animals. The dogs had meat pies for breakfast and the Donkey, chickens and peacocks enjoyed Gingerbread for several days!
What a pretty table laden with such beautifully produces foods. And those sweet little fuzzy little people watching over the delectable items - too sweet!
What a night! I couldn't sleep and after getting up briefly at 12:30 and 2:30, I got up at 4:30 to stay. I made a cup of tea and fired up my laptop that I keep on my kitchen counter and scrolled through u-tuba to find to my delight this episode of hopalong hollow which featured a Victorian meal and Charles Dickens! I so enjoy the rustic meal preperations and was tickled to see the dishes used to set the table! I have some pieces myself and I love them. Best of all was the retrospect of the author Charles Dickens! I, too, am a huge fan of the man and his works. Getting up at this crazy hour was meant to be it seems! Thank you, Jeri!
Dickens wrote a "Child's History of England". Pretty bloody history for kids. I guess things were different then. There is a part about William Wallace that made me weep. This video has me searching my home library for it. The food looks delicious and I appreciate the time put in.Great!
I love your duck bowl. I have a similar bunny one. Ducks on the farm are so fun to watch. I just lost my flock to a predator and miss them terribly but in Spring I will buy babies.
Absolutely wonderful video! I loved watching you use your antique baking utensils. That sure brought back memories of being next to my grandmother in the kitchen while she used some of those same utensils. I'm 73 now so that was many, many years ago. I'm looking forward to your next video!
I had raised eyebrows as you mentioned that Charles Dickens and his first wife had 10 children together, but then divorced...but after pausing in thought for a few moments, I realized how loud household of children, the daily busy constant comings and goings...would make it an INSANE atmosphere for a writer trying to create a new manuscript! No wonder he had a secret door in his home...it was probably a stairway to the attic, with old mattresses nailed against the walls to muffle the daily childhood screams, laughter, chatter, boisterous bellowings and stomping feet of 10 children lol!
It was such a enriching video, reviving the books of Charles Dickens and connecting them to the Victorian time which I so much love ! It sturred university memories and lectures, thank you so much for sticking to old values and bringing them forth in a time of great need ! May you and your lovely farm and house have a Happy New Year !
I was so excited to see your curiosity shop dishes. I have a incomplete set but keep picking them up whenever I find them. Everything looks so delicious.
I love Charles dickens and have since I was six when I read a Christmas Carol. He is also my favorite author. Of course A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist E my favorite stories. I always five you Yea with Dickens “ video and look forward to it every year! Keep them coming my lady genius!💗
This was interesting to watch. I love the Dickens story and have seen just about all of them on my local PBS channel and on Utube. Thank you for all your nice videos during the year and love the little felt characters and your pretty dishes.
All of it is so lovely! Your cake and meat pies 🥧 look especially wonderful! ♥️ I’m 3/4th through Dombey and Son. ♥️🥰 Great idea to read Dickens in the wintertime. 😮Bleak House and Our Mutual Friend are probably my favorites of those I’ve read, also! ♥️✨😁
Thank you Jeri, once more. Sometimes, I'll re-watch your program's. They are like 'gifts', in many way's...I feel. Almost being there, in person. Especially seeing your lovely, hand-felted...work's of Art. Just wonderful! Charles Dickens, "A Christmas Carol", is a favorite, of mine. As I've not read, his stories, though...should. Your wonderful meal here, chinaware and all, is so...inviting. Really makes a holiday, special. Going back in time, as well. Never fond, of the modern day, commericalism's. Especially, nowday's. I use to use, those 'boxed' Dromadary (sp?) mix of Gingerbread cake. Love the way, you added the cream cheese, 'drizzle' frosting, to your wonderful, homemade receipe. Decorated, so beautifully...as with you meat pie~crust. Those pretty, mapleleaf designs. Then showing 'us', your neat collection, of your Charles Dicken's, book's. Plus the lovely artwork/ illustration's. Always a treat, too look at! Best Wishes, from Chatsworth, So. aka 'Caliville' US of 🇺🇸.
One billion "thumbs up" for you. These felt mice, old books, your love for the table elegant settings, your voice commenting the C. Dickens books not to mention your receipes....what a heaven. I live in Italy and I treasure every single video of yours. Thank you so much for all what you do to show what style means. Love from Genua (but I was born on the Dolomites and lived in 10 different town both in Italy and abroad).
You forgot to add 1 kitty for joy. Oh my goodness, I marvel at things that were available with the stamps we collected. I know that I still have and use things that I acquired with green stamps. The brunch looks delicious. I wish we had smell-o-vision. I wouldn't call that a meager feast by any means. Your little guests are adorable. Lucky donkeys are going to get quite the treat. I doubt that Dickens will ever go out of popularity. Thank you Jerri. Happy New Year.
After your last Tea with Dickens video I came across a set of dinnerware in the Old Curiosity Shop pattern and just had to buy them. I watched that video several times, and now I plan to watch this one over and over! Thank you for the lovely visit, and Happy New Year! 🐀🐀🐀
My wife Janet and I love your channel. Your talents and gifts touch our hearts especially the Christmas videos. Finding your channel has certainly enriched our lives, thank you so very much!
My great grandmother made tortiere twice a year. Once for the fair and once for the holidays. We have her recipe but hers was somehow just better. I love your mice. So pretty.
Beautiful table. As always I learn much from your videos. Thank you! For the first time last month, I read “Christmas Carol “ by Dickens, for years it was a family tradition to watch the movie during the Christmas holiday.
Hello, good time, dear friend Thank you for this beautiful and wonderful sharing The atmosphere of your videos is professional and relaxing, I like the shots of your videos very much, your high skills are admirable. I am a new subscriber Good luck, dear colleague
What a delight Jeri..thankyou so much for bringing Charles Dickens to the absolutely beautiful dinner that you prepared..will be making those mouth watering pies ..you have a way like no other to bring magic into our lives..❤ 🥧 ❤
Greetings Jeri !! The meat pie and cake to pretty to eat !! When we go the U.P Michigan we always stop and get "Pasties" it is like a meat pie. Always enjoyable watching you cook with all of the vintage items! thanks so much for sharing the interesting history of C.Dickens. BLessings in the New Year !! Paula
Charles worked in a workhouse, which he hated. He blackened boots. BBC had a serialized version of Little Dorrit about 20 or 25 years ago that I really enjoyed...insofar as one can enjoy such sadness.
@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow You said that he wasn't sent to the debtor's prison, but his life was still very difficult. Later in life, he had recurring nightmares of that time of his life.
He only worked there for a few months, and subsequently was able to complete a further couple of years of his education, up to the age of about 16. He had a glorious life - was very wealthy, lived in lovely big houses (I've visited one) - with many servants, and travelled overseas extensively.
@clairenoon4070 You make sound as if you were a part of his household....his father was TERRIBLE with money. Charles was always trying to pay his debts which were enormous. Later in life, Charles had a mistress of many years.
@@catherinemelnyk It surely must have had an effect on his entire life; it also enabled him to have much empathy for the poor and downtrodden, which is how he was able to write such incredible stories and become a wealthy and successful man. So, he was a man of many accomplishments and equal pain.
Just finished reading his unfinished novel Mystery of Edwin Drood and Master Humphrey's clock. My favourite author. Loved your meat pies. They looked delicious Jeri. Wishing u a wonderful year ahead.❤❤❤
Am currently watching a version of The Pickwick Papers. I had never really heard of it. It's enjoyable- rather comical- an interesting picture of that time. Thank you so much for sharing! I always learn from and am inspired by you and your collection and knowledge. I also very much enjoyed (watching) Our Mutual Friend. What a story!
Greetings Jeri! Thank you for this video as I absolutely adore your cooking and table setting videos especially when Charles Dickens is involved! I too love reading his stories especially around Christmas, A Christmas Carol and Great Expectations are my favorites. Your meat pie looked beautiful and delicious and as for the dishes they are perfect for a winter dinner. I have some of the dishes myself and I’m always on the lookout for more. Wishing you a very happy new year!
I’m definitely making the pie. I was planning on turkey pot pie on Sunday. I’m going to make both. I think for the liquid I would swap wine or cider for beef broth. Thickened with butter and flour and a dash of the Worcestershire sauce.
Jeri I want to thank you so much for all the wonderful videos this Holiday season. What a treat it has been. I have loved every one of them but the Charles Dickens one is my favorite. He is my favorite author and I have several old book’s by him, possibly the same ones as you. Thank you so much for this video. There was a series years ago called Dickens of London, PBS I think, that held my interest more than anything they have on tv now. Happy New Year to you and your family.
All the food you made looks delicious! I loved that this was Charles Dickens themed as I am also a big Charles Dickens fan 📚☺️ I enjoyed learning these facts about him. My favorite of his novels so far is Great Expectations.
I've been a bit off this year. I feel it now, but it's been a gradual thing over many. The last few years have been rough on everyone, so I shouldn't complain. Thank you for a very pleasant pause. Sometimes, we need a reminder of how nice the outcome can be after all the hard work.
Lovely brunch! And I enjoyed the Charles Dickens piece ❤️. He really was a remarkable man and so much a part of Christmas 🤩. Love the mice and love Stella’s little bell ❤️
What a lovely after Christmas gift. Your presentation was just so charming and calming. You my dear, are my Christmas Carol. It’s so dreary and rainy here in Michigan. But you brought joy to me this morning while I drink my morning tea. Thank you for all of your wonderful videos this past year.
So many things to love about this video! Your recipes look delicious! I was fortunate enough to go to London and have several pies, some were meat and some were just potato and onion. They were my favorite meals! I love Great Expectations, and A Christmas Carol. We watch the 1938 version of that every Christmas. I love your old copies of Dicken’s books! I am on the lookout for an old copy of The Pilgrim’s Progress. That is one of my all time favorite books. Love the mice! Happy New Year to you and James! 🥂
What turned me on to the meat pies was watching the series POIROT; Inspector Japp is frequently seen eating a Pastie. I learned how to make them because of that.
We used to holiday in Broadstairs, where Dickens lived for a period. I remember that there was a shop where a lady used to make handmade dolls of Dickens characters. I particularly remember Miss Haversham in her faded wedding finery.
The whole menu looks delightful and the meat pies mouth watering ! Thank you for making this special video for us all. Would you mind sharing the pastry recipe that you used please? Thank you in advance and Happy New Year ~ Linda (NZ)

That sounds delish, I love anything made with pastry.
Sounds delish.
I do this very same thing…so good!
What a wonderful idea! Thanks so much for sharing.😊
Do you par-bake the bottom crust so it doesn't get soggy from the gravy?
Oh Jerry, this is one of my favorite videos to date! ~Terri ❤ 😊
Cracking eggs is a good sound, I agree.
What a treat for the New Year🥰. Many thanks and love to you and yours in 2024😊❤️
You've inspired me to read Dickens!
Very Good!
Боже мой! Какая вкуснятина!!! Отдельное спасибо за Диккенса! Обожаю его Рождественскую историю.

These Dicken’s videos are my favorites! My favorite readings are “A Christmas Carol” and “Oliver Twist”.
Absolutely love Charles Dickens since I was a young girl right up until today at 59!
Such a lovely table, great recipes, and beautiful commentary! Thank you for such a lovely, inspirational gift in these days of Christmas!
What a pretty table laden with such beautifully produces foods. And those sweet little fuzzy little people watching over the delectable items - too sweet!
If this doesn’t put everyone in the holiday spirit something is wrong! Thank you 🙏

Interesting, I will have to find that book.
I love your duck bowl. I have a similar bunny one. Ducks on the farm are so fun to watch. I just lost my flock to a predator and miss them terribly but in Spring I will buy babies.
I dearly love my ducks, but they are so susceptible to every kind of predator.
Absolutely wonderful video! I loved watching you use your antique baking utensils. That sure brought back memories of being next to my grandmother in the kitchen while she used some of those same utensils. I'm 73 now so that was many, many years ago. I'm looking forward to your next video!
Thank you so much!
Love it when you do these
I had raised eyebrows as you mentioned that Charles Dickens and his first wife had 10 children together, but then divorced...but after pausing in thought for a few moments, I realized how loud household of children, the daily busy constant comings and goings...would make it an INSANE atmosphere for a writer trying to create a new manuscript! No wonder he had a secret door in his home...it was probably a stairway to the attic, with old mattresses nailed against the walls to muffle the daily childhood screams, laughter, chatter, boisterous bellowings and stomping feet of 10 children lol!
The funny thing is, Charles kept the children and got rid of the wife. He left all them money in his will, but not sure about his wife...
Beautiful video from the meal to the Charles Dickens history. Thank you
It was such a enriching video, reviving the books of Charles Dickens and connecting them to the Victorian time which I so much love ! It sturred university memories and lectures, thank you so much for sticking to old values and bringing them forth in a time of great need !

Lots of love from England.I love older things and yours are of very good taste.Charles dickens gives the best window into history.xx🐝🐝
I was so excited to see your curiosity shop dishes. I have a incomplete set but keep picking them up whenever I find them. Everything looks so delicious.
Dickens is my favorite as well. Great Expectations is my favorite. It inspired a lot of my early art.

I remember helping my mom paste the stamps in her little stamp books.
Jeri Landers! I love Charles Dickens and most things historical from this era. The pie and cake look delicious. Thank you
Enjoyed the cooking and the Dickens ❤
On goodness, Charles Dickens inspired Edgar Allen Poe to write
'The Raven'?!
That is so wonderful. I never knew that!
Thank you for your research ❤️
Very enjoyable! Happy New Year!

Always enjoyable watching you cook with all of the vintage items! thanks so much for sharing the interesting history of C.Dickens. BLessings in the New Year !! Paula
I made Pasties in a video one year, love them!
Charles worked in a workhouse, which he hated. He blackened boots. BBC had a serialized version of Little Dorrit about 20 or 25 years ago that I really enjoyed...insofar as one can enjoy such sadness.
He actually pasted the labels on the pots of boot Blacking, didn't actually blacken the boots.
Oohh. My mother in law was just telling me about her memories of gingerbread with fresh whipped cream. I bet it tastes great warm! ❤
I watched it a long time ago, never read the book. I should give it a look.
Beef broth is much preferred. I think the turkey would actually be great in these pie shells.
Enjoyed this very much ❤
Jeri I want to thank you so much for all the wonderful videos this Holiday season.
I must find that PBS series.
How True!
There is nothing "meager" about that meal. You made my mouth water!
Another beautiful, informative video.
Lovely brunch! And I enjoyed the Charles Dickens piece ❤️. He really was a remarkable man and so much a part of Christmas 🤩. Love the mice and love Stella’s little bell ❤️
That looks so yummy 😋Jerry and the table looks elegant. .
A Tale of Two Cities is my favorite Dickens novel.
This is so cozy!! Sometimes how much I wish I could be invited to your humble abode and have wonderful dinner and covnersation!
Your "Tea with Charles Dickens" video you made a few years ago is one of my favorites, thank you!❤
Love the mice. All the food looks delicious.
Wow!! Jeri, you have been so energetic!!! Thank you for doing all this for us!!!!
Your table looks delicious and the meat pies came out perfectly. I agree that sausage would be a flavorful addition.😊
I would definitely replace with sausage. I'm making these again as turkey pies.
so beautiful. You have so many beautiful things. Thank you for sharing them!
What a wonderful looking lite supper. I’m sure it was delicious. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing this with us. 😊
My pleasure 😊
We used to holiday in Broadstairs, where Dickens lived for a period. I remember that there was a shop where a lady used to make handmade dolls of Dickens characters. I particularly remember Miss Haversham in her faded wedding finery.
Miss Haversham is an incredible sad but fascinating character. I had a hen named after her... she was also a very fascinating little old lady.
The whole menu looks delightful and the meat pies mouth watering ! Thank you for making this special video for us all. Would you mind sharing the pastry recipe that you used please? Thank you in advance and Happy New Year ~ Linda (NZ)
I'll add the pie crust recipe to the description as soon as possible...
What a treat to watch and listen! Everything looks so tasty and the table setting with the mice oversight, perfect.
Everything looks sooo gooood! I like Charles Dickinson to.. Thank you for sharing. HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR, AND GOD BLESS YOUAND YOUR HUSBAND.
