What you do has to be a labor of love. I know you have been tuning and working on airguns for quite a few years now. Enjoyed looking at familiar faces in the airgun show pictures too. Thanks for showing us what you do in these videos. Hope you continue to enjoy doing what you do best.
Just amazing to watch what a professional tune really means. Paul you are an amazing craftsman. I simply cannot wait until you are agin taking tune work. I have an HW 95 dying to go and meet you.
Thanks. I won't be taking anything in anymore. I have a lot of stuff here I need to finish up and my own stuff to sell. Just can't give a time frame on it anymore.
Great job Paul! Glad to see your videos on here. It’s been a very long time since you did work for me, but the guns you worked on for me have always been like a Swiss watch. Superbly tuned and top quality! Thanks for sharing and I hope you’re doing well. 👊👍
Glad you got something from it. While watching it during editing, I thought it was like observing someone trying to remove a half inch with a surface grinder ;-) The hone leaves a beautiful finish but it almost starts acting like flat stones when you get down to removing tiny flat spots. I should have ground it out first and then honed the tube for the right surface finish. Unfortunately you never know until you're into them how bad they are. This one was worse than usual. If I was dealing with this on every one I did I would have to change up how I was doing things on a consistent basis. That said, I bought the CBN stones for these tubes. Most of the time they will get almost everything perfect in short order and all I have to do is run the right stone for the final surface finish I want. Many Thanks! Paul
Hello Mr. Paul Watts, you in your videos show why taking an airgun to the maximum level is not for everyone, a lot of knowledge and a lot of, but a lot of work, I was getting tired, just in a fleece at work, before I met your work , for me a tuning carbine was polishing, good spring guides, and good lubricant, that's what I unfortunately have in my carbines, but I would like to have a Ferrari, I know it’s a lot of work to do these videos, but please keep, Cheers.
Proper fitting guides and a quality spring are the foundation of a well tuned rifle. I'm just showing that last little bit that can be gleaned. While there is a value in what I do. I don't think it in any way devalues anything else. Including how the rifle comes from the factory. They are fine rifles and kitted ones even more so. I'm just trying to show what I do and why. Hope everyone can glean something from what I share. Many Thanks! Paul
@@PaulWattsSpringGunning Mr. Paul, I have the base in my weapons, and I really like it, but as you say, I lack last little bit that can be gleaned, I don't want to devalue anyone's work, but in my humble opinion yours has details that I never had seen, my HW50S when I first disassembled it had the cylinder scraped by the piston, and I know it happens in all, for some reason everyone tries to improve their carbines, even the best brands.
Thanks PW. I always wondered just how this was done. I wanted you to give my R1 one of your top tunes but got in line just as you stop doing them because of (I think ) mostly stupid guys wanting max power out of them. I can understand your frustration but now I need it still done and would also like a FWB 124d done by you. Both original and never a problem or taken apart but now older and needy. Always enjoyable to see a master machinist at work like yourself in this great hobby. Hope you're doing well!
I haven't got to the end of this video, but wouldn't it be cheaper and less time consuming to make your own tubes complete. I think V Mach in the UK used to make their pistons completely. Also, I admire your machinery, all I've got is a Myford Super Seven long base and could never afford the machinery that you have got. All the best from the UK.
Wow Paul, that was definitely NOT for the faint of heart! Really appreciate you documenting the process, otherwise many would never know exactly the effort and expertise required to correct an out of round tube with several flat spots, including a naughty one at the extreme bottom of the tube! Question, what did the final ID of the tube turn out to be? Thanks again!
These two tubes were a curve ball for sure. I should have mentioned it in the video and will soon put up a addendum to this video to clarify a few things. I was going to shoot a extra bit of video to include some thoughts after the process but I spent about four hours editing this video due to it's length and felt it would have just been too long if I did. I did do some measurements before and after but it was cut out. In the end it the tube ID was a total of .0035 oversize. That's not a lot but but removing it this way is less than ideal. Most tubes aren't out this much. If you watch the HW98 tube honing video you can see the contrast in how long it takes to do with something more "run of the mill".
Wow, round the clock production😵 Interns. You need a shop full of eager interns to help crank out those bucket list quality spring guns😁 Enjoying your videos👍
I work when I can. More often than not it's at night. The phone isn't ringing and something doesn't need doing around the house. I don't have any interns but I hope putting up the videos will pass along some of what I've had beat into me over the years ;-) Thanks!
Probably four jaw with paper between the jaws and receiver. As little pressure as possible. Ruining the finish on the receiver would be my main concern.
Heard they stoped honing new HW30s and 50s , I getting my new HW30s tomorrow, need to check it I feel. Thanks for realy good videos and explanations :)
HW hasn't honed receivers in decades. That said, the factory seal will work fine with the un-honed receivers. Truing up receivers is just a extra step I do when tuning them to try and optimize the powerplant. Thanks for watching!
I bet an o -ring set up would work well in such a straight tube Paul. Just got myself a hw30s today in .177 what is a reasonable power level for this rifle with a full tune would 8ftlb be possible without it being horrible to shoot.
I'll be doing a video series on the Beeman R7 and HW30. I'll lay out the reasons why I'm not a fan of trying to boost them. So stay tuned! It will be along shortly.
No coolant oil on the stone? also How to you avoid breaking stones on the tube slots? I ran a Machine shop and we had a Sunnen hone but I never tried this because of concern for breaking the stones.
The blind hole doesn't allow for any good way of flooding the oil into the tube. I do it manually with the bottle on the side. The slot doesn't run the full length of the tube. So long as you keep at least one stone engaged in the front and back and the rack doesn't have a lot of wear it works fine. I just keep the stones sized so they all run true together. The video is edited to keep it a reasonable length. I had years of people saying it couldn't be done. I put this video up more or less to show it can be done and that I was actually doing it.
true about honing a blind hole. I was honing tubing 6 inches long with and I.D of .750 plus or minus .001, It had to seal air as it contained an air driven motor, something called a Micro 100 hand piece. used by doctors for grinding on bones. gave me the wellie's when I though about what the stuff i made was used for. sternum saws, stuff like that.
@@imjusttoodissgusted5620 I believe one of those motors was a option when I bought my checkering machine. I opted for the electric instead. Kool stuff!
@@PaulWattsSpringGunning I am gona try that first then if it does not tame it down to about 10.5 FLBS then I will go for the JM UK SUB 12flbs kit, Thanks

Paul, great stuff as usual. If you did use a tool post grinder, how would you hold the tube so that the chuck pressure didn’t effect the ID finish?
Probably four jaw with paper between the jaws and receiver. As little pressure as possible. Ruining the finish on the receiver would be my main concern.
Sooperb watch, how do you make sure the honing gets a circular profile.a mirror finish may make one believe it's perfect circular ID.

Hi Paul is it 3GP28-1000VA you use
2G on the short stuff and 4G on long receivers. You have to have the R28 wedge and stones for blind holes. Thanks for watching!
awesome
Thanks you!
Thanks For the video Paul, please recommend how I can down tune a fierce R9!...Just short and to the point Pls!
